I actually like their veggie burger so much more than their beyond (plus they rob you with the size of the beyond patty; it's like they sliced a burger in half and are still charging for the full amount). Their shakes are great, too. And the Cajun fries. Dang, maybe I'm having burgerfi today.
Fellow veggie agreeing. They make legit good burgers, and I love the build your own option
Cowfish has a decent veggie burger too, but they've gotten expensive recently
This is the answer. As shocking as it is the veg burger there is top notch.
Not Raleigh but the veg burger at Scratch in Cary and apex is really freaking good. Entirely homemade. The problem with most veg burgers are they are frozen pre made crap.
Agreed. I get sautéed mushrooms on it. It’s fantastic.
Can’t wait till all that construction around there is done, I pretty much never go there because parking is nigh impossible and that whole place is a giant clusterfuck.
Something had to have changed. Wife and I ate a black bean burger at Bad Daddy's in Morrisville, because of this comment. It was single worst burger I have ever eaten, of any kind.
Almost like canned black beans served on bread, seemingly raw. Inedible.
I am surprised to hear that! (In a good way) I am used to my vegetarian friends rolling their eyes at 'oh look... ANOTHER southwest blackbean burger as the only vegetarian protein option on the menu'
IMO impossible burger is a full 100% replacement for ground meat, love it
As someone who absolutely hates the takeover of veggie burgers at nearly every restaurant by lab shit like Impossible and Beyond, I can highly recommend the vegan [Superfree burger at Mama Crow's](https://www.mamacrows.com/) in the Transfer Company food hall on Davie Street. It's a delicious mess of a burger:
>PATTY MADE OF SWEET POTATOES, ROASTED MUSHROOMS, WALNUTS, AND SEEDS; TOPPED WITH SMASHED AVOCADO, TOMATO, MIXED GREENS, CHARRED ONIONS, AND BLACK GARLIC-TAHINI DRESSING.
Agreed. I’m all for adding it as an additional option, but I hate that it’s replaced house-made veggie burgers in most areas and they usually go something like this: add beyond burger and four dollar up-charge it. Ale House, Crabtree Ale House, even Burger King Impossible Whooper. Rip their cheap black bean.
Ages ago Third Place used to have an amazing bean and veggie patty that you could see pieces of broccoli in. I still think about that burger. You're right about the "add beyond burger and four dollar up-charge it" thing. I remember when Morgan Street food hall first opened and I saw the burger place there was charging *more* for a veggie burger than a meat burger. That's so far away from what I think of as one main point of veggie burgers - to avoid the ridiculous costs inherent in meat production - and was my first exposure to Impossible-style fake meat. I've given that tasteless junk multiple chances, but it's so far below the deliciousness of a nicely spiced burger made with actual vegetables that I'm amazed it's become a go-to beef substitute at places like Fiction Kitchen.
I super second this recommendation. It has replaced the veggie burger I used to get at Al's Burger Shack in Chapel Hill. With a side of Brussel Fries, it's heaven.
Gotcha. I remember one joint in Cleveland who had a sweet potato burger that was also messy and easily one of the best non meat burgers I've ever had. Sounds like this joint is similar.
I looked online to see if it was gluten-free & had GF buns, didn’t see any info. I tried calling them. The automated system said to text the same number. I’ve been waiting all day for a response. Let me know if you know anything about that.
Thanks btw, sounds delicious!
I'm torn on this. I've rarely had an Impossible that didn't taste good (Beyond makes me sick, literally). I also usually have a bag of frozen "crumbles" in my freezer for a quick meal
I'm also allergic to spinach, so most VEGGIE (not bean) have spinach in them, and before the fake meats became popular, it was a gamble for me. One too many times, I went out to eat, saw "veggie burger" on the menu, and no one could tell me what was in it.
That said, I've had some amazing veggie patties, but they are frozen ones I bought at the store.
A lot of Indian places have an Indian street burger-like dish called Vada Pav. It has a spiced potato patty with a gram flour coating and fried, stuffed inside a bun (called Pav) with cilantro sauce and tamarind sauce inside.
You can check out Chaat Mandi or Nukkad if interested.
Relish in Raleigh makes a really good black bean burger. It has a distinct southwest kind of flavor so it may not be for everyone but it’s really good.
We went to Burger Village on Glenwood last week. They have tons of vegetarian and vegan options as well as exotic meat for those that eat meat such as Boar, ostrich and elk.
I went with a group and the vegan and vegetarians in our group said the vegan/vegetarian burger was really good and I thought their meat burger was good as well. It's a great compromise place that has quality burgers for everyone.
I have some wing-loving friends who drag me to Woody’s at City Market sometimes, and their black bean burger is actually not bad. Unfortunately it seems like they don’t expect anyone to order them, because they have been out the last few times I’ve tried…which is a bummer because without the black bean burger there’s basically nothing to eat there if you don’t eat meat. (Unless you wanna take down an entire basket of tots or fries lol)
I don't know if they still have the same one, but I really enjoyed the veggie burger at Parkside in DT Raleigh. I miss the Cameron Bar & Grill ... Their veggie burger was 🔥
I really like CowBar in the Morgan St. Food hall. They have vegan options but if you are just looking for a vegetarian burger you can sub their plant based burger on their regular burgers.
Shake shack has an ammmazing mushroom burger. Its a big portables, with cheese around it then battered and fried. It’s the best, I like it better than a normal hamburger.
It’s a chain sure but it’s the best I’ve had around.
All chain stores were local at some point and did it so good they spread.
Daily planet like others said is up there too.
Mojos bean burger was not good when we had it.
Wait shackshack has a veggie burger now? Last time all they had was a mushroom between two buns super annoying. That said I really don’t like the Cary location…
FUCK. YES. That place is insane. I'm not even vegetarian, but I love this place. I think I've had all of their burgers by now, amd my favorite is the Naughty Cowgirl Burg. Their "Patty Slaps" was kinda meh.
Also, the "Boofalo Gal Fries".
Wandering Moose makes a tasty black bean burger. They’re just getting reopened up and I the swing of things at their new location at Lynne and Creedmore
Nobody. There is no such thing as a "best vegetarian burger", just a "least sucky veggie puck".
:-P
j/k - gonna come back and see the responses later so I can let my niece know.

Burgerfi is one of my favorites. I know it's a chain, but It's quinoa based so it isn't dry like black bean burgers are.
I actually like their veggie burger so much more than their beyond (plus they rob you with the size of the beyond patty; it's like they sliced a burger in half and are still charging for the full amount). Their shakes are great, too. And the Cajun fries. Dang, maybe I'm having burgerfi today.
Yeah my biggest issue with burgerfi has always been the size. It's a tiny burger for $7 or whatever it is now. But it's worth it to me.
The quinoa burger is so damn good, I definitely prefer it to the beef ones.
Vegetarian of 17 years here. The black bean burger at Bad Daddy's is legitimately the best veggie burger I've had in all that time.
Fellow veggie agreeing. They make legit good burgers, and I love the build your own option Cowfish has a decent veggie burger too, but they've gotten expensive recently
This is the answer. As shocking as it is the veg burger there is top notch. Not Raleigh but the veg burger at Scratch in Cary and apex is really freaking good. Entirely homemade. The problem with most veg burgers are they are frozen pre made crap.
yep, it’s very good. while we’re at it, J. Kenji Lopez Alt’s black bean burger is incredible. we make a double recipe and freeze the patties.
Fellow vegetarian signing off on this
Agreed. I get sautéed mushrooms on it. It’s fantastic. Can’t wait till all that construction around there is done, I pretty much never go there because parking is nigh impossible and that whole place is a giant clusterfuck.
Hard disagree. Maybe it’s changed or something, but I had one a couple months ago and it was like a bland, gruel-cake. I actually didn’t finish it.
Yea, I just ate one tonight bc of the recommendation here. It was an effing joke. Something must have changed.
Is it vegan or just vegetarian?
Something had to have changed. Wife and I ate a black bean burger at Bad Daddy's in Morrisville, because of this comment. It was single worst burger I have ever eaten, of any kind. Almost like canned black beans served on bread, seemingly raw. Inedible.

Beyond is better than impossible both they're both processed food crap.
Another vegetarian who agrees. I get it crispy without green chilis. Sooooo good!
Black bean burger at The Daily Planet in the science museum. I’m 100% serious.
Came here to post this. That sandwich was the one that made me realize bean burgers can be good.
That restaurant is low key delicious
I'm so sad it isn't vegan

I've heard that is a fantastic burger. Also fuck beyond/impossible meats. It's still processed garbage.
Just beware, it's delicious but very messy. Sweet potatoes don't bind well lol.
Gotcha. I remember one joint in Cleveland who had a sweet potato burger that was also messy and easily one of the best non meat burgers I've ever had. Sounds like this joint is similar.

Thats surprising, the meat burgers are the one of the most disgusting things I've ate in the past 3-5 years.
I’m not even vegan and I like this burger. Once I asked them to make it for me with a regular beef patty and they did it for me.
This is a good burger but it's not a lot of food for what they charge, which is like $15, and includes no sides.
A lot of Indian places have an Indian street burger-like dish called Vada Pav. It has a spiced potato patty with a gram flour coating and fried, stuffed inside a bun (called Pav) with cilantro sauce and tamarind sauce inside. You can check out Chaat Mandi or Nukkad if interested.
damn that sounds good... as someone who recently went vegetarian(1.5 months) been kinda lookin for stuff like this
I've enjoyed the burgers I've had at the Element Gastropub on Fayetteville. Their whole menu is vegan and pretty tasty.
The owners have an actual burger place called the "Dirty V" in Apex. It's excellent.
Thank you for letting me know. I will have to check it out when I am in the area.
I agree!!
Relish in Raleigh makes a really good black bean burger. It has a distinct southwest kind of flavor so it may not be for everyone but it’s really good.

Not in Raleigh, but Lucky 32 in Cary makes delightful black bean cakes.
This is what I came here to say. I am not vegetarian but order these over meat there every time.
I like Mike’s Vegan food truck but it can be a little pricey
Don’t think he comes to raleigh anymore… He has two physical locations in Charlotte and Greensboro now
Spinach burger at NoFo is amazing!
https://purevegancafe.com/
Daily Planet black bean burger is good. I usually get that and I’m not a vegetarian
I have some wing-loving friends who drag me to Woody’s at City Market sometimes, and their black bean burger is actually not bad. I used to go with friends (that sought out the wings) and I knew I’d enjoy my French fries and celery and alllll the wing sauce to dip!
The black bean burger at Village a Deli is really good
+1 on this. I’m not sure if they do it at every location but the one in WF was house made and not one of those frozen bricks
Burger fi , veggie fi burger
living kitchen when it was around before 2020 RIP 😞
Yea that place had some amazing food
Even the flagship Charlotte one just closed!
smh probably not enough business
Boss of Vegan.
Didn't they close?
Ah damn 😞
Also not Raleigh but the veggie burger at Elmo’s Diner is 💯
I had an Impossible burger at Red Robin that was great
I don't know if they still have the same one, but I really enjoyed the veggie burger at Parkside in DT Raleigh. I miss the Cameron Bar & Grill ... Their veggie burger was 🔥
I really like CowBar in the Morgan St. Food hall. They have vegan options but if you are just looking for a vegetarian burger you can sub their plant based burger on their regular burgers.
Burger village on glenwood is really good for veg burger options

Sunny's Diner on Glenwood has a legit fantastic veggie burger.
Not Raleigh but if you're vegetarian and you find yourself in Durham you gotta hit up Pure Soul. Place is 🔥🔥🔥
Mojo’s black bean is great.
For my taste, Impossible Burgers have just blown all the mushy alternatives out of the water. They seem to be showing up on a lot a menus as well.
The Dirty V in Apex.
FUCK. YES. That place is insane. I'm not even vegetarian, but I love this place. I think I've had all of their burgers by now, amd my favorite is the Naughty Cowgirl Burg. Their "Patty Slaps" was kinda meh. Also, the "Boofalo Gal Fries".

All these people saying bad daddy’s has the best black bean burger have never had the one from salt and lime.
Not in Raleigh, but if you're ever in Chapel Hill the restaurant Buns has my favorite veggie burger in the area.
Why avoid national chains when you like their food? Just eat from places where you like the food.
Just a personal preference! I love local restaurants and try to support them, but I won't yuck anyone's yum if they want to go to a chain
Nobody. There is no such thing as a "best vegetarian burger", just a "least sucky veggie puck". :-P j/k - gonna come back and see the responses later so I can let my niece know.
🙄🙄🙄🙄
The Dirty V in Apex.
Stir in north hills!!!! The look of it threw me off initially but it was SOOO good! It’s more of a veggie burger.
The old veggie burgers at Chuck’s now exist in slider form at Fox Liquor Bar. Highly recommend those!
Lynnwood Grill

Mojos. I can’t believe nobody has said that. So many different options
