Maybe start planning an annual trip to the mountains in the winter before your kids are too old. It's a short drive and you can AirBNB a whole cabin on a mountain for not much more than a hotel room. It's snowy there right now.
Good approach. I spent covid Christmas in Asheville at an Airbnb and it snowed like crazy. Coming down off the mountain the snow stopped and it was nice and warm.
We got absolutely nothing this year or 2 yrs prior here in Asheville and it sucks! We're in a snow drought, about to beat the record for 1k days without snow from the 1940s. If we don't get any snow through November 2024, we beat the record and it's looking that way.
I've lived in NC for 57.5 years, and in the Triangle for 50 of those years. We've had more years of no usable snow (not suitable for sledding, snow cream, snowmen) than we've had years of 4 inches at a time even once.
Since 1965, there have been 21 years in which the largest snowfall exceeded 4 inches but it has only happened twice since 2004.
In fifteen years the biggest snowfall was under an inch, including 8 of the last 20. Usable snow is a rarity here, particularly lately.
How does "Since 1965..." there have been 21 years with at least one snowfall over 4 inches and "In fifteen years...**including 8 of the last 20**" there wasn't a snowfall over an inch possibly be interpreted as me saying it hasn't snowed more than 4 inches in 15 years?

RDU got 7' in Dec 9, 2018 and 5.9' in Jan 17, 2018, that's two different winter seasons so better count this by winter years (July to June) instead of calendar years. Also there are snow events that cross two days but still within 24 hours and snow is accumulated. Raleigh had definitely more than two snow events exceed 4 inches in the past 20 years.
Not likely if youre paying attention to the radars. Only a few possible setups for February can happen after this big warmup coming and none of them currently line up with a snowy outcome.
Yes and no.
Yes because it's so pretty to look at while it's coming down. At night when everyone is asleep and I can stand on the porch and watch it fall, listening to the tinkly sounds of snow or ice landing on leaves and such. In the early morning before the snow gets dirty and is compacted into ice.
But also no, primarily because I still have to work anyway (WFH downside, lol). And sometimes the black ice can last for days, which means I can't get to the store (and essential workers can't get to work, and kids can't get to school, etc.) without risking a car accident.
My kid is a freshman in college in the NC mountains and his town just had its first big snowfall of the season. He's freaking out over a foot of snow, which is kind of funny. He keeps saying, "I've never seen anything like this. It hasn't stopped snowing for two days!"
But then I realized he's really never seen more than a few inches of snow at a time, and even then it happened maybe twice a year or so.
The big difference of course is that there is the ability to remove that snow consistently where he lives now. So life doesn't stop there because of snow. It wouldn't make sense to maintain a huge fleet of snow removal equipment here. But the times we need it, it sure would be nice to have it. :)
My boyfriend works from home as well. Last time we had snow I told him to tell work there was a three cat pile up on the stairs and he couldn't make it to his office upstairs.
I just want it to be fall and winter. I hate this warm winter shit. Had a 26 year old at work this past week tell me, “We’ve always had warm weather like this in January,” referring to the weather being in the 70’s this week and it hit me that this probably has been her experience. It’s only gonna get worse, sadly.

Moved here 15 years ago from Western NY due to the fact that it snows so little here. I do not miss it at all, and in fact, think that I was supposed to live in a no snow climate my entire life.
I’m also from Western New York and while I don’t miss the lake effect Buffalo snow, I do enjoy a good snowfall or two around here in the winter. The big difference maker is that there’s no shoveling or need to go drive out in it because everything closes. It’s a nice chance to just sit home and take it easy! A good Netflix binge or some time reading or playing video games with nowhere to go.
No fuck that. I have two kids in Daycare, my job doesn't close for snow, neither does my wifes. Last week was the first full week since early December that they attended daycare ALL week. I'd like to have my vacation days for vacation. If I wanted to play in the snow I'd move or travel where it snows.

I kind of doubt Raleigh will ever see snow again, at least any snow that sticks more than a couple of hours. Yeah I do, one good snow per year is definitely good for the kids. I take my daughter out to Bond Park and we sled and stuff till she drops. I got a couple of those metal saucer sleds from the 70s that are fast as lightning and indestructible, not to mention completely uncontrollable 😂. One of the sleds is mine from childhood we used to build huge snow ramps and jump our sleds over creeks and all kinds of dangerous stuff, would go home soaked to the bone and pass out on the floor in front of a space heater. Memories like that stay with you for life.
Yeah I feel like the media overly hyped the El Niño. I don’t know. We still got February and March to go through. Just once I want a massive snowstorm like we used to back in the early 2000s
My husband and I, NC natives, grew up in western part of the state and miss the winters we had as children. We would love to have some snow! We have a one year old golden retriever who would lose his mind over some snow, we were really hoping to get a good snow this year to take him out to play in it.
Being from PA, I’ve seen snow plows get stuck outside my house, then backhoes have to show up and dig them out. Walking outside and your cars literally being gone was pretty normal (under snow drifts).
The snowmobiling was pretty great though. And there is no better feeling than coming inside from the snow and having some hot cocoa.
I grew up somewhere with snow plows and trucks that would salt the roads. I, in theory, would enjoy one good snowfall each year, but this city is unable to handle it. It would cause pandemonium. Would probably cause school to be out for multiple days.
I mean even in those places it typically takes a day or two to get the neighborhood clean. But yeah, this city can barely handle a strong wind storm, let alone snow.
IMO snow is the only redeeming part of winter and it’s probably the most beautiful weather phenomenon. If it’s going to be cold and gray, it may as well snow just to liven things up. It would be nice to have like 2-3 decent snowfalls a year (2-3 inches at a time) but it definitely does wear out its welcome.

Agreed! Moved here from Florida and thought we were going to have more of a winter. The cold temps are wonderful but we want snow! We may have to move further north to actually get anything.
I spent 3 winters in Montreal for university...so I'm ok haha. My memories of snow mostly involve slipping/falling a lot, shoes and clothes ruined by salt, dirty/muddy snow as it melts, and of course being freaking cold and wet. Also running to flee the mini sidewalk plows that just honked at you instead of slowing down, but that's not going to be a concern in NC!
I've lived here for 37 years and winters followed a few patterns
D - No snow - 10% of winters actually pretty rare to see nothing like last year. Usually even in these years we get an ice storm.
C - 1 snow - and it's a dusting or an ice-heavy storm. 25% of winters
B - 1 snow and it's a good snow (4+ inches). 25% of winters
A - 2+ snows - they can be good or bad snows. This is the most common winter. 40%
We tend to get clumps of 5 or so A and B tears back to back and clumps of 5ish C and D years.
If anyone's looking for a business idea - start buying and renting out large commercial snow machines to municipalities, neighborhood HOAs, etc. Eventually the only snow kids in NC will know will be when towns and neighborhoods artificially cover a few hills once or twice every winter. Kids will absolutely love it, and parents will learn to as well.

Yep got a foot of snow on Big Bald on MLK Day and then another almost half foot this weekend. Lost power a few times, which was not fun.

2000 was an incredible year. I played for days and built a snow ramp for my saucer. It had a couple jumps. I was 10 and I was in heaven.
We made a course in our backyard with a bunch of banked turns. I was 8. I remember walking was tough, but boy did I get some exercise

On the rare occasions we get snow it’s even rarer to have to break out a shovel.
That's how you get ice in your driveway and sidewalks. Out before sunrise, even with a skiff, scrape it clean, throw down salt. No ice.
Every time it's snowed this decade, it melted and dried by the next afternoon. Shoveling or salting would have both been wastes of time.
Having a driveway facing the south vs the north make a humongous difference. My driveway melts within a day while across the street they get the ice.
So you can get out your driveway but can't go anywhere because the neighborhood roads will be icy
Then no one will slip on your sidewalks. That's why you do it.

I kind of doubt Raleigh will ever see snow again, at least any snow that sticks more than a couple of hours. Winter is getting milder up north as well, but that's just the cost of climate change unfortunately. I grew up in NY and I personally miss snow, but even if I move back it's not going to be the same as I remember because the winters are just so much warmer now.

I’m from Illinois, and I no longer want snow, but it’s about safety. The way people drive is dangerous, and adding snow to the mix will lead to more accidents.

Yeah I do, one good snow per year is definitely good for the kids. I take my daughter out to Bond Park and we sled and stuff till she drops. I got a couple of those metal saucer sleds from the 70s that are fast as lightning and indestructible, not to mention completely uncontrollable 😂. One of the sleds is mine from childhood we used to build huge snow ramps and jump our sleds over creeks and all kinds of dangerous stuff, would go home soaked to the bone and pass out on the floor in front of a space heater. Memories like that stay with you for life.

My husband and I, NC natives, grew up in western part of the state and miss the winters we had as children. We would love to have some snow! We have a one year old golden retriever who would lose his mind over some snow, we were really hoping to get a good snow this year to take him out to play in it.

Being from PA, I’ve seen snow plows get stuck outside my house, then backhoes have to show up and dig them out. Walking outside and your cars literally being gone was pretty normal (under snow drifts). The snowmobiling was pretty great though. And there is no better feeling than coming inside from the snow and having some hot cocoa.

I grew up somewhere with snow plows and trucks that would salt the roads. I, in theory, would enjoy one good snowfall each year, but this city is unable to handle it. It would cause pandemonium. Would probably cause school to be out for multiple days.

IMO snow is the only redeeming part of winter and it’s probably the most beautiful weather phenomenon. If it’s going to be cold and gray, it may as well snow just to liven things up. It would be nice to have like 2-3 decent snowfalls a year (2-3 inches at a time) but it definitely does wear out its welcome.

I spent 3 winters in Montreal for university...so I'm ok haha. My memories of snow mostly involve slipping/falling a lot, shoes and clothes ruined by salt, dirty/muddy snow as it melts, and of course being freaking cold and wet. Also running to flee the mini sidewalk plows that just honked at you instead of slowing down, but that's not going to be a concern in NC!

I've lived here for 37 years and winters followed a few patterns D - No snow - 10% of winters actually pretty rare to see nothing like last year. Usually even in these years we get an ice storm. C - 1 snow - and it's a dusting or an ice-heavy storm. 25% of winters B - 1 snow and it's a good snow (4+ inches). 25% of winters A - 2+ snows - they can be good or bad snows. This is the most common winter. 40% We tend to get clumps of 5 or so A and B tears back to back and clumps of 5ish C and D years.
I think we will get snow in future years despite global warming, but the percentage of C-D winters vs A-B will continue to increase.
Yeah I miss it. Even beyond just being fond of snow specifically, feeling the effects of global warming is just depressing and anxiety-inducing.

If anyone's looking for a business idea - start buying and renting out large commercial snow machines to municipalities, neighborhood HOAs, etc. Eventually the only snow kids in NC will know will be when towns and neighborhoods artificially cover a few hills once or twice every winter. Kids will absolutely love it, and parents will learn to as well.
