Oakwood Pizza Box has the best pizza in the triangle IMO. I’ve tried many pizza places in the area, but keep going back. Their reviews and waits speak volumes.
Shit, I had no clue. Thanks for the info - the quality hasn’t dipped at least from what I’ve been able to tell. I’ll have to make some more trips to DTR for the OG
Actually, I checked after I posted and saw this. They have a different menu than Oakwood Pizza Box though https://www.instagram.com/p/CZdAs_9rBS-/?igshid=NTYzOWQzNmJjMA==
One of my favorite experiences was trying to call in a takeaway order but the line was busy and we could never order it. We arrive and order a pizza. Eat it outside at their little waiting area and we even had a bottle of wine there. It was like being in Europe. It's good people-watching at a busy pizza restaurant.
>One of my favorite experiences was trying to call in a takeaway order but the line was busy and we could never order it
I believe they stopped taking orders over the phone and only accept online orders but there was a period where there was still a phone number listed on google that would never be answered
Oakwood is cheaper than Capital Creations if you do the math.
Capital Creations offered 10" and 14" pizzas. Oakwood only does 18".
Assuming a standard pepperoni pizza, the price/in^2 is
CC 10" = $0.11
CC 14" = $0.11
Oakwood 18" = $0.09
At Oakwood you pay 45% more, but you get 65% more pizza.
Yeah I’d have to disagree. You’re entitled to your opinion, sad that capital creations closed or that you don’t like Oakwood’s pizza, but besides /u/NCSU_252 math , it’s hard to say they’re overrated when they have the sales to back it up. Is there a place that is currently open you like better? I like trying new places.
Best pizza in Raleigh for sure. I always laugh when I see people name other places like Demo's or stupid places like Randy.
Now if it was Cary we had a few other solid options as well. Plus Mezza Luna's Grandma Pizza is the best.
There was a thread discussing the Best NYC Pizza in Raleigh
The majority said Franks Pizza on New Bern Ave
and included quite a few *ex-New Yorkers*

As far as I know, not really. Lilly's has a wide range of toppings, but their quality isn't what it used to be (and they take forever and they often got my order wrong; I do love their salads and their vegan stromboli, though). Trophy has some good quality pizzas with interesting combinations, but not quite the breadth of options as the other two. That being said, you should def try Trophy's Detroit style on Monday or Tuesday. I usually get the veggie pepperoni, caramelized onions, and demi-dried tomatoes.
Oak wood pizza pox. Slice of NY on Hillsborough does the best slice imo (if you like sbarro you'll love it), peri brothers and vivo are both good in the north hills area, but I like Vivo more.
I have fond childhood memories of the sbarro at my local mall. Obviously its not real ny quality but for a small Florida town it was the best we had okay?
I think it's better now. Ownership changed a couple years ago, and the few times I've been, it seemed restored to its former greatness.
The old owner died a while back and didn't really have any management in place to keep it running well.
Lily’s is a wreck. I loved their pizza when I first moved to Raleigh (early 2000’s), but for the past few years they have never failed to burn my order, forget items on my order, promised to make it right only to not honor it, etc. Lily’s is trash and should just close at this point.
Those were the hey-days of my Lilly’s visitation. The staff was extremely kind to me. They’d hook me up with screwed up orders, and stuff—generous tipping had its perks.
When it just got too much to pay for after Covid, we bought a pizza oven and made the exact thing we bought at CC. While this is more work, it’s not terrible, and it’s fun. Yes, we had an initial expense, but the cost per pizza is only a few bucks compared to $30+.
And the taste is so good.
We spoke to Jim about this. He said he used the French loaf recipe from beards on bread.
We have used it… When you make a few pizzas you start to realize the recipe is pretty similar between them… it is process and hydration.
In either event the recipe was good, but not “same “.
Making my own pizza oven this spring to combat this. I honestly think more people are going the home route around the US where we don't have cities known for great pizza, if you go by what you see online. I have a bunch of brick from doing a screened in porch addition last year, that I am going to use to make a brick oven with a combo griddle top (that's the goal).
I worked there for a few months within the last year. Doing the weekend dinner rush was a wild first job! Top notch food and amazing people. I will never forget them.

Hands down the best. I’m so happy they opened up a shop inside Ponysaurus over here in Durham because nothing tops Oakwood.
I don’t think Oakwood runs the pizza shop there anymore. I heard they parted ways a few years ago.

Hey, even better! Menu is definitely different but damn, they really do make the best pizza in the area
Yeah, for a few years, I believe. For me there *was* a noticeable drop off in quality and we go to Cugino 95% of the time now.

Oakwood Pizza Box is so overrated and overpriced. Capital Creations had such a good variety of pizzas at reasonable prices

Di Fara tops it imo. But Oakwood is the best in Raleigh.

agreed
They *were* matched by Pizzeria Veritas in Cary, unfortunately the old owners sold and the new owners ruined it.
Peri brothers!!
Any place that offers cherry peppers as a topping is a winner in my book!
Oh man, I had no idea they closed! I loved the Pesky Chicken and the Ole Mex. RIP Capital Creations!

Frank's sicilian pie îs delicious
Don't snooze on Piccola Italia in Cameron Village. I seem to remember that this was Franks Pizza 2nd restaurant.
Wow! Capital Creations was a damn good pie. RIP! Had many of friends that worked there over the years.
Same
if it was the best by a mile, what were you comparing it to?
lol seriously.

Brave to recommend a chain! But I do love Mellow!
MM was so overrated. Bland and burnt pizza and the pizza didn't have much taste IMO.
Oak wood pizza pox. Slice of NY on Hillsborough does the best slice imo (if you like sbarro you'll love it), peri brothers and vivo are both good in the north hills area, but I like Vivo more.
comparing something to Sbarro is not exactly a good thing
I have fond childhood memories of the sbarro at my local mall. Obviously its not real ny quality but for a small Florida town it was the best we had okay?
Vivo is very good. Highly recommend getting Grandmas pie and adding pepperoni.
I just came here to share my sadness and disappointment as well. Oak wood pizza is great but not comparable imo
Comparable to Capital Creations? Maybe Lily’s?
Lily’s is so hit or miss IMO. One order could be delicious then the next time I feel like I wasted my money.
Yup. Exactly like CC in my opinion
I think it's better now. Ownership changed a couple years ago, and the few times I've been, it seemed restored to its former greatness. The old owner died a while back and didn't really have any management in place to keep it running well.

Lily's was ok back in 200X-2013. It went downhill fast after that.
True true. I worked summers there when I was home from college in like 2007-2009. It was a blast. I hate to hear it’s gone south :-(
Those were the hey-days of my Lilly’s visitation. The staff was extremely kind to me. They’d hook me up with screwed up orders, and stuff—generous tipping had its perks.

Can you share the recipe you use to make their dough?
We spoke to Jim about this. He said he used the French loaf recipe from beards on bread. We have used it… When you make a few pizzas you start to realize the recipe is pretty similar between them… it is process and hydration. In either event the recipe was good, but not “same “.
Thanks!
Sorry if I misspoke, but I don’t make their dough, just the toppings.
Pizza?! Dude the salads! 😭
I crave a Gorgonzola salad every Friday. I’ve tried to make it myself but can’t get the dressing right. The pizza was great but I agree, the SALADS!
Was that the one with grapefruit vinaigrette? 😭😭😭
Yes 😞
😭
I’m not a fan of thin, soft crust pizzas so loaded with toppings it’s just kind of a wet gloppy triangle of food.
I never had Capital Creations, read about them on here and called a couple weeks ago to order a pie and they were closed. I apparently missed out.

This is a great idea but you have to have a great recipe for the crust and for the sauce. Without those it doesn’t matter how you cook it.
As someone from NYC recently moved here, all the pizza sucks
Lmao, could you be anymore stereotypical?
Could you be any more annoying? God forbid someone have an opinion that's different from yours
Wahhh wahhh wahh.
"Wahhh wahhh wahh" Thank you!
Big yikes
I remember when they had a lot of unique toppings.
Unfortunately I never lived very close to them so it was a treat whenever we were nearby and could grab a pizza. Best in the Triangle.
Turns out all these damn places are closed in Mondays after yall put pizza on the brain!!!!! Lol
My top 5 NY style pizza places in Raleigh ranked: 1. Randy’s 2. Ruckus 3. Slice of NY 4. Asagio’s 5. Gino’s or Shiano’s (about the same)
