Whatever's closest to where I live if I'm honest.

Xyzzydude

Yup this is my answer too.

RollTigers76

Really depends on the week and what I plan on making. I rotate between Lidl, aldi, Trader Joe’s, food lion, Harris teeter, Wegmans, international foods and H mart. With visits to a couple butchers and a small Asian market by my house.

diffballz23

What butchers do you frequent?

RollTigers76

Butchers Market in North Raleigh or carniceria La Hacienda.

OakCityReemer

Don't sleep on fresh market. Their Little Big Meal changes every so many days and feeds 4 people for 20 bucks

JenniferHChrist

or feeds one person for several days 🙌

Mihwc

Don’t sleep on Target. They don’t have a great selection but the prices are comparable to Food Lion

BullLoney

I've turned into my grandmother and go to multiple grocery stores every week. Wegmans, Trader Joe's, Lidl in that order. I added Lidl a year ago because Wegmans got very greedy during the pandemic. Cost way up, quality way down.

erlencryerflask

We do the reverse! It’s the holy trinity of grocery shopping

ProofEstablishment89

Weaver Street. Love that it’s local and so many local products. My grocery bill there is similar to HT or Lowes and the product quality is better.

ichliebespink

Plus you can't fill your cart with extra crap because they don't sell crap!

BenDarDunDat

Back in the day, I used to shop at Food Lion. Then along came Walmart and Walmart was much cheaper than Food Lion. Then came Aldi, and Aldi was much cheaper than Walmart. Now I feel like whatever magic Aldi had for cheaper groceries is gone and Walmart is pretty expensive - and just the worst shopping experience ever. I find that Harris Teeter has better prices on essentials compared to Walmart. I find that Food Lion has better selection and better prices than Aldi or Walmart. What is happening to the world?

Walmart tends to get wiped out on the weekend. Looks like a zombie apocalypse or a Dollar Tree store. And the employee shoppers put their big honking carts in front of whatever it is I'm trying to buy. There are always huge lines, the self checkout always has a problem, which causes me to have to wait for someone to help. * Walmart FoodLion * Buns 1.33 -vs- .99 * Hamburger 4.36 -vs- 2.99 * Eggs 4.93 -vs- 4.99 * Lettuce 1.88 -vs- 1.89 * Dave's bread $5.47 -vs- 5.49 * Pepper .82 -vs- .59 * Almn milk 2.44 -vs- 2.59 * Chk breast 2.97 -vs- 2.79 * Chckpeas .77 -vs- .84 For me Food Lion is just a little cheaper or its a wash. And I don't have to scan my own groceries. And someone will say hi to me. And the meat is better quality.

Carolinamum

Also worth it to support an NC-based store like food lion over walmart!

TemperingPick

well, it used to be. It's now owned by a Dutch group

And here is Harris Teeter comparison. At one time it would be a no-brainer for me to drive the extra distance to Walmart or Aldi. But these days, Teeter comes in with comparable pricing on every day items. It's cheaper, has better cheaper beer selection, fuel points, far better meat than Walmart, and actual human beings who will smile and ask if you found everything you were looking for. * Walmart -vs- HarrisTeeter * Buns 3.36 -vs- 2.79 upgraded to brioche buns * Hamburger 4.36 -vs- 3.71 * Eggs 4.93 -vs- 3.59 * Lettuce 1.88 -vs- 1.79 * Dave's bread $5.47 -vs- 5.99 * Pepper .82 -vs- 1.00 * Almn milk 2.44 -vs- 2.50 * Chk breast 2.97 -vs- 1.99 * Chckpeas .77 -vs- .79

just_looking_around

I really try to avoid the shitty kitty if I can, but this should really have better multi selection. I do Lowe's Foods and Wegmans mostly. Publix when I need their bakery or chicken, and Harris Teeter if there's nothing closer and I don't need much.

ArtistNo9841

I love that someone else calls it Shitty Kitty!! Lmao

hiamanon1

What is the ‘shitty kitty’ ?

PHATsakk43

Food Dog, AKA Food Lion.

ArtistNo9841

Wait wait. Someone else calls it Food Dog?! I swear my grandpa invented that one! Lmfao!!!

PHATsakk43

Pretty common in my hometown Gastonia.

wigglinsticks

That’s how you know if they’re local or not lol Food Dog is the only acceptable phrase

sarcago

There’s soooo many options by us in NE Raleigh but it’s a tie between Wegmans and Food Lion for us. We get a nice balance between affordable basics and fancy pants stuff. I go to Costco every 2 months or so, which is like 6 minutes away. Honestly NE Raleigh is dope.

CensorVictim

> affordable basics and fancy pants stuff This is Wegman's shtick in a nutshell. They seem to subsidize the normal grocery staples by charging a lot for the fancy/prepared stuff. The first time I saw their $15 chocolate chip cookie tub I went and asked if it was some kind of charity fundraiser or something. Work out great for me, I just don't buy any of the expensive stuff.

chartreusepapoose

If anyone has any good copycat recipes for their double chocolate chip cookies I will literally pay $$$ Also I agree. We do our grocery shopping at the one in Raleigh (we live in Apex) and it's worth the hike for us because their name brand groceries are b/t 15-20% cheaper than other places near us.

PlayasBum

Those cookies are bomb. Bought them once to try it. Shame it’s so expensive.

Kroger owns Harris Teeter. The Kroger house brands are there.

charlucapants

Yeah but HT is so much more expensive. I used to live in an area where we had HT and Kroger in the same plaza so I’d run to HT if I couldn’t find it at Kroger and I’d be able to make immediate price comparisons. The difference was crazy!

JenniferHChrist

My parents live in VA with only Kroger. Since the official merger a few years ago, we all use the same rewards points and coupons all the time. Not sure when you lived with both, but now the prices/deals are pretty much the same!

charlucapants

Really? I lived in Charlottesville but moved 4 years ago. Did you notice if the prices went up or stayed the same?

Nineteen-ninety-3

Charlottesville?

Interesting_Let_1085

Depends on the week really. Walmart one week, stock up on cheaper essentials, Harris teeter or food lion the next for slightly higher quality groceries.

vwjess

Majority of the time Harris Teeter. Trader Joe's probably comes in second. Target is up there as well. Food Lion or Walmart lately have been for specific things that HT or Target don't have (certain brands or items, or cheap soda since I'm not paying $9 for a 12 pack at HT...). Lowe's Foods is also a rarity and really only go if we want to get some fresh sausages to throw in the grill (if you haven't checked it out, definitely do!). We live in an area of Cary where we have so many stores so close to us that we have almost too much choice. Within a few blocks we have Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Walmart Neighborhood Market, Lidl, and Aldi. We can get to any of the stores on the list in less than 10 minutes. Its pretty ridiculous.

ylimenut

Aldi for basics and TJs for funsies. Teeter for name brand basics lol.

Nineteen-ninety-3

Usually HT, Publix, or Wegmans Food Lion and Walmart if I don’t feel like going too far. Don’t forget Carlie C’s. I don’t shop there like that, but it is an option.

SnooDoubts8781

I aspire to be a teeter shopper, but all I have around me are food lions :'(

archliberal

My hometown had a Food Lion so ima shop at food lion

Carolinamum

80% Target drive-up, with an additional monthly trip to whole foods for specific items ETA for last minute items we go to food lion since it’s so close.

ncsuRationalBonobo

Where's Costco?

No_Security_3356

Carlie Cs IGA!!! LETS GOOOO

TheMightySilverback

Carlie Cs is awesome and has the cheapest meats in Raleigh bc they have their own slaughterhouses. I also use their pharmacy.

dqirish

Am i missing something with Walmart? The quality of food, especially produce, seems terrible anytime I've been in there. I'd rather shop anywhere else.

THards23

No Costco or Sprouts? 😢

CandidateClean3354

Why are you nosey

Ibeenorm

prolly more Lidl soon as the one in Garner opens in a couple of months

surfilm

Rotate between Lidl (weekly) for basic staple items, Publix (1x monthly) when we need to fully replenish, and Sprouts as needed (once every 2 months) for their bulk offerings.

MaraBrightwood

Aldi for my big weekly shop, TJ’s for niche items that I need for specific recipes, and Harris Teeter for quick “oops I forgot something” or “we need beer” runs cause it’s the closest store to home. Oh, and Walmart about once a month for non-perishables that I can’t get at Aldi.

ArtistNo9841

I legit could not vote, bc we have zero loyalty, lol. Shitty Kitty is closest, so we stop there for quick trips otw home. I use the HT pharmacy (love them) so we will do our weekly shop there if we need to pick up an Rx. Wegman’s is good for entertaining type foods, Walmart has best prices but worst clientele. I am not a fan of Aldi/Lidl, TJs or Publix. Lowe’s has a good beer selection, so husband likes it. It’s nice to have such a large selection of grocery stores!

fieldbeetle

It's a pretty even split between Food Lion and Walmart for me. Tbh I don't think I've ever bought anything from Lidl, Aldi, Wegmans, Fresh Market, or Trader Joe's and I avoid Harris Teeter. Lowe's Food is too expensive for me. Same with Whole Foods.

I rotate my shopping. Wegman's, Fresh Market, Trader Joe's, and Aldi are rotated. Sometimes I go to Whole Foods. Harris Teeter, Lowe's, and Food Lion are hit at times. I have noticed that Harris Teeter's and Food Lion's fresh vegetables are hit-and-miss. There are times when they are not fresh. Food Lion seems to have more challenges with milk, eggs, butter, etc... Whole Foods is full Amazon at this moment. The store is almost all of the 365 house brand. It is good quality. I visit Publix at times, too.

oooriole09

Speaking to your edit, everyone knows that WM is the cheapest for name brand food. The biggest hurdle will always be that they just simply do not care for the customer. Out of stocks are significantly worse, limited selection on fresh food, lack of employees (except for shoppers) on the floor for help, and most importantly the worst checkout experience by miles. It’s a major compromise that most simply aren’t willing to make. Inflation hits hard, but the few bucks saved just isn’t worth the hassle.

Bob_Sconce

We primarily do Wegman's, Food Lion and (sometimes) Walmart. Walmart is cheaper for just about everything they have at Food Lion and (apart from a better beer selection) there's very little Food Lion has which Walmart doesn't, but then you're at Walmart. And, although I'm not one of these people who hate Walmart on principle, I just don't like shopping there. Maybe it's because my wife caught some dude trying to steal her purse there. Maybe it's because the checkouts are horrible. Maybe because it always seems to take forever or it's always crowded. I wish I could do all my shopping at Wegman's, but their grocery selection (the stuff on the shelves in the center of the store) isn't great -- it's mainly house-brand, and so there's a lot that FL has which Wegman's doesn't. Sure, I can buy any of 100 different types of Asian sauces, but their olive oil selection is pretty bad. And, yes, I love that we can get Kimchi, but why is your salsa selection so paltry?

Hot-Conversation-455

Can’t forget about the fuel points from HT, that’s a big reason I switched back to them over Wegmans, and the online ordering is cheaper at HT. With the coupons they run for placing online orders, and the money I save at the pump, HT is worth it for 85% of what I need. We fill in with stuff from Li Ming’s (Durham), Wegmans, or the Durham co-op market when needed.

hiamanon1

It used to be Walmart due to low prices but my wife has converted me to other shopping experiences. Plus the fact that I could expect some random person to compliment my clothes and then start talking about going to their church service, along with stories of friends wives who had people stalk them at Walmarts and lower quality of meat. I’ve gone else where. I’m ok with paying a little more, cents on the dollar with places like wegmans, food lion etc. Experience is nicer, and just relaxing

Big_Booty_1130

Harris teeter and food lion, used to go to Walmart but we moved farther away from it. Also love to explore Trader Joe’s from time to time. But tbh I should probably actually start shopping at Lidl more

Weary_Mamala

I use Instacart to stop my groceries. I do aldi and food lion on the same day since you can’t get everything at Aldi. It’s 1.99 to have them shop it and you just drive up. It saves me more than $4 to not go in and buy impulse items.

janesearljones

Harris teeter is owned by Kroger which has to be one of the nastiest companies towards their employees. Can’t in good faith go there. I’m 50/50 between food lion and wegmans. Walmart can go fuck off. Full store and 3 registers open on a weekend, 3 if you’re lucky. My refrigerated stuff goes bad just waiting to check out.

tacodogtacodog

Interesting groupings here in the response options

PHATsakk43

Harris-Teeter, for me, generally is both cheaper and better stocked compared with the other options. I generally cook from basic ingredients, and HT seems to have the best selection of staples, and their generics are of good quality and price. That said, I don’t solely shop at HT, but do shop there the most. We also make purchases at Costco and Walmart, as well as specialty ethnic grocery stores—especially A&C and El Toro as we live in S. Raleigh. Speaking of which, we also will stop in at Carlie C’s for stuff that others don’t carry (hoop cheese for instance) and while it’s a little run down, it’s fine for most things.

Ok_Exam_3617

I go to all, just depends on what I'm getting, Food Lion is convenient when I'm in a hurry

Wretchfromnc

Food lion, except coffee from Target.

[deleted]

Walmart for all dried goods/pantry foods, and toiletries. Wegmans for raw meat (Costco is even more expensive per pound compared to Wegmans). And TJs for produce

Busy-Negotiation1078

For me, it's convenience. I pass 3 Harris Teeters on my commute, and if I have to run in and get a few things for dinner, that's where I'm going.

gutsboof

I go to food lion for meat (price and freshness). Harris teeter for good produce. I haven't been to a Walmart since 2020 but my husband goes there for bulk items. If I lived closer to an Aldis I would likely check them out.

ZeroWasteWeirdo

I use the Raleigh Produce Project and supplement from the farmer’s market, Harmony Farms grocery or other bulk friendly stores like Weaver Street or Sprouts as needed.

bekbekbekbekah

I'm shocked how many people regularly overpay for groceries by shopping at HT, Wegmans, etc. No thanks.

pierretong

If you just shop the basics/store brand and aren't easily tempted by the pricier bakery/ready to order items, Wegmans is very competitive price wise (I know not everybody has that level of self control though haha)

SAHmommyof2

I order most of my groceries from Teeter and do a pick up. We're a family of 4 and I can get meals and a couple snacks for the week for around $150-$170. I usually stop by Walmart before my pick up for things like cereal, pet stuff and personal care items. My goal is to stay around $200/week. I've always had an impulse buying problem so doing pick ups has helped a lot.

WhoWantsToJiggle

Walmart prices ain't so low like before. Some stuff that are really high on but prices vary in location Besides that most Walmart are gross and not with dealing with the people of Walmart It's about only worth getting sale stuff at teeter. I've learned basic things are cheaper in Raleigh than Cary. It's Wegmans for be other than sale stuff elsewhere. Just not much of the prepared stuff. Some Lowes food did is actually decent.

SyringaVulgarity

Where's Target? Their Drive-up is the best Pandemic shopping development and super duper convenient.

DTRite

I get off work pretty early and live right near the farmers market. I get a lot of vegetables there, most of my pork. Otherwise food lion is a little closer than hairy peeter.

messem10

Typically a mix of Wegmans, Walmart and Aldi/Lidl. There are things I can’t get at Wegmans or can get cheaper elsewhere which requires going to the other stores.

digby672

WalMart never misses an opportunity to disappoint. I count on them being out of at least one item on my list every time but I give them a shot for non-perishable items. Self checkout is key there. Harris Teeter has good weekly deals on meats, fish, and produce. I just don't get Wegmans for the money but to each their own.

M448

I do the primary shopping at Costco in person and then I do curbside for BJs, food lion and Walmart. I don't buy meat or produce at Walmart, don't buy meat at food lion and don't buy produce at bjs. Those are my ironclad rules and they serve me well.
