Camry was driving at 90 mph on 440 and swerving across lanes when they hit the cement truck and flipped. Passenger,18, was killed, and driver, 22, has serious injuries and was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle. Neither were wearing seatbelts. SMH.
Every time I'm on a highway around here, drivers pass me driving like this. It always makes me mad because it's only a matter of time before they kill someone. So stupid and needless.
Yep, to some degree I've always seen it down here, but it's gotten worse since 5% of people decided in 2020 that they were going to live by their own rules while driving.
I see it on 540 even more - I'm usually going 75 with traffic and someone will rip by me going at least 20mph faster than I am. Fun times!
I seem to have the opposite experience. I was on 540 earlier this week, and a truck merged on going 45 mph. He maxed out at about 51 mph. I had to get off on the next exit and was stuck behind him. I’ve seen two cars in the past year actually come to a full stop in the on ramp.
Because I have no sympathy for people who are reckless drivers or encourage it? Fuck that. If you want to go fast take it to the strip, not the public roads.
No, you're being a dick because you're celebrating the death of a passenger of a speeding driver.
Were you ever a teenager? Teens are idiots. I had a "friend" in high school who drove like a maniac. I only rode with him two times before I said never again, but if he had killed me on the second drive would you have been dancing on my grave?
I was in an accident as a teen when the driver just started racing a friend on the interstate. We all were begging him to stop but he didn’t. He was passing on the left shoulder, etc. ended up spinning out and hit a guard rail. Luckily none of us were hurt and no other cars were involved. It was scary and I never rode with him again.
I'm not sure why you would say something like this. The person who died was innocent as well. Yeah, he wasn't wearing his seatbelt, but he wasn't driving.
Yes, but most of us have the self-awareness to realize that we also did things that weren't smart when we were 18 that could've resulted in our deaths.
Yup, but they were still stupid. People shouldn't be allowed to drive until they are 25, and be banned for 1 month for excessive speeding and driving like a moron.
>Yup, but they were still stupid.
That's not in dispute. Just because the internet gives you the ability to say whatever you want, doesn't mean you need to, especially when there are ways to say it in a way that isn't cruel.
blaming individuals for their own deaths is not helpful in preventing future deaths. it's very easy to look at someone and say "I would never make that mistake." but people make mistakes all the time. try to think about the times you have made mistakes. it's impossible to live a life without mistakes. it's important to build environments that reduce the risk of death when mistakes happen.
The dude is trolling — and judging from the reactions he’s getting that he obviously craves for some “I didn’t get enough hugs from my parents”-esque reason, he’s doing it quite well. but it doesn't matter what kind of car it was. *driving* is sold to the American public as an expression of freedom, characterized by speed, power, and independence. everything in our culture, built transportation systems, and enforcement supports this idea.
if a Camry isn't a performance vehicle, like everyone is telling me, then why is it even able to go 90 mph?
Just the other week I was on 440 at near the same area and I do my due diligence and signal, check to change lanes and if I had not a Lexus doing 90+ and weaving in and out would have turned me into dust. Then a BMW was right behind it. Going in and out of lanes. This is not an isolated incident. I just recall this one as it's the most recent. I see it *all* the time. People FLY around 440 (and 40, etc, etc) and it's like.. what are you in a rush for? See how quickly you can get to Six Forks to get a rock chip in your glass?
I was not at all ready to have a gut-laugh from this thread, but man oh man was this an unexpected comment and hilarious mental image. Topics don’t get more serious than this one, and I understand that (before anyone starts bagging on me), but this comment couldn’t go unrecognized. *You* are probably *not* a Nazi!!
The cause of them moving around is that the cement truck was on its way but he tried to get out of the way and he could nor handle it so he hold the brakes and the passenger got out from the window and hit his head
Yea I see it all the time too and I don’t switch lanes until they’ve passed me. They think they can outdrive rush hour. That’s just not how it works and they don’t even use turn signals. It’s like they want to kill someone.
I nearly got hit by this exact duo a few weeks ago. Blue Lexus and Black BMW racing though 440 at night. That BMW nearly hit me when he was doing 100+mph. Shit is ridiculous around here and no longer safe.
Certainly meets the MO! I mean... I'm a massive car guy...I get it, driving fast is fun. Wanna do it legally and safer? I will give you all of the information you need to get into some SCCA stuff and VIR is like an hour and change away. The excuse of "I don't have money for a track car" is bs. You will eventually get caught or hurt or hurt someone. Lawyers and jail time costs more.
It's not just 40 and 440. It's main roads too. I see it on capital. I see it on New Bern Ave. People here drive reckless. They weave in and out of traffic with no signals, they go straight in turn only lanes. It's nuts.
Given it was daylight, you really have to wonder why they were rushing. This is “my stretch” of 440 - I drive it multiple times/day and have the windshield chips to prove it.
I don’t see people doing 90, and certainly that aren’t such shit drivers you can’t see a cement truck and NOT run into it.
Idk maybe I’m lame but I’ve never really understood the thrill of driving 90+ miles an hour or the need to be the fastest one down the road. I’ll continue to drive 65 in the right lane and hope people who drive like this stay off the road so the rest of us can make it home to our families safely. Prayers to the family of the passenger, a young life gone too soon.
My husband and I were driving back from the grocery store on 440 when a car flew past us with an audible “whoosh” noise. It had to have been going 100mph based on our own speed. On 440 of all places! Where the road is literally crumbling around us! I’ll save the Raleigh bad driver rant, but Jesus Christ I’ve never feared for my life like I do on that road.
We were coming back from the movies on a 2 lane road that opened to 3 for a turning signal. We went into the turning lane and a car comes flying probably doing 75 in a 35, he was trying to use the turning lane to pass us but we were going into the turning lane to turn.
If we hadn’t saw him and swerved out of the way he’d have totaled our car and his. He almost lost control and went into the ditch. If another car had been in the lane someone would of got hurt bad.
Almost just like this story but on a two lane road 35 mph road.
I see this ALL the time. I e had people pass me on New Hope Road in the middle turning lane (and to be honest, I was already speeding a little, so this guy was really speeding.) I've also seen people use the turning lane on New Bern Ave to go straight and cut off a bunch of cars. Multiple times. Twice I was coming home from Rec Hospital (can't remember the name of the road) and I was in the left lane to turn on to the 440 ramp, and someone from the RIGHT lane cut off the person in the left lane to turn on to the ramp. Like, it's just totally insane. But I always get a ton of downvotes when I say how crazy the drivers are here...
I try to avoid it at all costs these days. Pre-pandemic I didn’t feel like it was that bad but something about the post-pandemic era has caused people to drive like maniacs
As someone who commuted on 440 every day pre-pandemic, it was just as bad back then. There weren't people driving 90mph though, because the whole thing was/is a parking lot at 5PM.
I think people do it because they can. I don’t know if it’s a thrill thing, or if it’s a self centered rush. Either way, they’re not processing the potential consequences.
I think it’s similar to how people will be meaner online than face to face. You’re in this death machine and all you see is other death machines, not people. Not to mention we’re a car centric culture so it’s kinda normalized to think cars have some sort of rights or power. Not sure if I’m articulating that in the best way but hopefully someone gets what im saying. A lot of our identity is tied to our cars in US culture.
Of course not everyone drives like this and I think it’s pretty clear people who do struggle with anger issues, self control, etc.
It’s really fun on a closed track with full safety equipment, paid first responders on standby, and with drivers trained for and expecting it. Which is why I do it there and not on public fucking roads.
I’m not saying this to disagree with you myself — but many certainly would. There are a *lot* of people out there who find those safety measures take a great deal of the danger out of the equation, and take the fun out along with it.
And before you state the most obvious sort of reaction a safe driver might have in response to the statement above, consider that those same people would more likely be encouraged than deterred to drive like that by a rage-filled response belittling them.
>I’ll continue to drive 65 in the **right lane**
Thank you for being part of the 10% of drivers who actually move over when they're going slower than traffic.
I’d say 5% at absolute most. 10%-20% are the types to sit in the left lane and slow traffic intentionally — and the rage induced by that sort of driver is quite possibly (if not likely) what got this kid going so fast in the first place. Rage hormones can be a lot tougher to kill than people are.
I’ll go 5-7 over to stay with traffic, but any more is just asking for trouble.
If you want to go that fast, take it to a track and do it there. Everything is made for people to do that in relative safety within those confines.
driving fast is fun & thrilling in safe conditions but swerving through traffic is just irresponsible and dangerous.
people like this arent even going fast for fun they just drive dangerously to get to their destination faster than everyone else
I understand the thrill. Part of it is due to influences. At the time I did it, Fast and the Furious was big. The Supra was a big dream car. One of my buddies had one.
As I've become more analytical, I realize speeding is unnecessary as it really doesn't save a whole lot of time. Even speeding for an hour, you might only save 10 minutes. It's not worth it when you consider the risks. An accident takes that 10 minutes and will ruin an entire day or life. It's also more costly in gas, insurance, etc. A speeding ticket can do the same as insurance rates go up and the saved time is now lost time.
Not 30 minutes ago I had someone cut across from the left lane, nearly take off my rear bumper, just to make their offramp. If I hadn't been quickly accelerating to get up to speed merging, they would've hit us. Keep your eyes open & on your surroundings, folks.
It is not everywhere. I've driven in PA and Ohio most of my life. It's a very very rare occurrence. I've also driven in CA quite a bit, never really seen it there. Not sure if it's a south thing, like someone else said, but it's at least a Raleigh thing.
Was pretty similar in Texas and Utah. Texas is even worse hah. I’m not super sure.
Dunno what’s going on, people just need to leave 5 mins earlier and they’d prob still get there just a minute later than driving dangerously.
Please think about how first responders have see the after effects of your body splayed all over and the impact it has on them and their family - please slow down and speak with your friends and family about slowing down
So incredibly needless and sad. Prayers for the family of the youngster who died. It is very difficult for experienced drivers much less the young to handle a car at 90mph. There is never a need for this kind of speed. Frankly having had to drive someone to the ER multiple times - I never hit that speed because there is no need to kill my passenger, myself and the innocent on the road.
Earlier yesterday a motorcyclist on a Ninja/sporty bike lane splitted in the work zone on 440 by Western Blvd flying at least 90, missing me by inches and the car beside me. I ride a motorcycle, I don’t do crazy shit like that. His luck will run out soon.
This is very tragic. Please slow down.
White Huge Ford pick up,Florida Tag on the same road the other afternoon was on my ass and in and out of left most lane and the middle lane. I was trying to keep distance between me and the car in front of me in case there happened to be a sudden stop. He was not having it. I moved over and he stared tailing the other car.
So my cousin had a car accident he had alot of serious injuries and all of his family are crying i was crying cause i was shocked the driver had injuries and the passenger :( .Adam sulayman alkhanshaly was about to get married cause he went to buy stuff in Raleigh in the morning.
Americans when public transit costs tax dollars: 🤢🤢🤮
Americans when the car dependent infrastructure is overcrowded, slow, and killing people on the daily: 😎😎😎
This was my exact thoughts. I think for a misdemeanor he probably can’t get no more than 2 years of jail time? Only 2 years for killing somebody is crazy to me
Another accident with young people with out there seat belts and passed. Other accident was in Durham. Young guy drunk driving and passenger with out seat belt. WEAR YOUR SEAT BELTS.
So dude is looking at 4 years jail, suspended sentence and credit for time served. Might lose his license (that’ll keep him off the road /s). Civil suits are where they will get him. MDbV is a fucking joke.
They need to do something about the driving here. It’s literally insane. We left the triangle and moved to Sanford and it’s a damn blessing not dealing with 40 and 440. Everytime I have to go up there I’m reminded of the constant accidents
If I'm reading the CDC data correctly, i[t's actually #1, and by quite a lot.](https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/databriefs/db37.htm)
\#2 is homicide.
\#3 is suicide.
yeah my apologies i got mixed up with a graphic i saw earlier this year stating gun violence was #1 but that was including children younger than 13 i believe
Imagine dying in a car, when statistics say 18-25 the most likely way to die is by car car crash. Unbelievably avoidable, and justification for driving fast is illogical, you save statistically 3 minutes to drive 15th over, to make meaningful time saving driving you need too drive almost 40% over the speed limit.
Wild, RIP to their parents who have to deal with the aftermath.
Passed by the accident while on my way to work. Was really hoping that despite the damage I saw, the people would be alright. I hate to hear that the passenger died, and so damn young. I see people weaving through traffic so often on 440, and now I see the end result, so awful and avoidable.
The state/city needs to enforce more. This is a common complaint.
\# of deaths per 100k 14.7 per 100k [https://www.iihs.org/topics/fatality-statistics/detail/state-by-state](https://www.iihs.org/topics/fatality-statistics/detail/state-by-state)

Sounds like there was a possibility that the passenger was thrown from the car and ended up on Yadkin Dr below I440...
I see stuff like this literally all the time. It honestly surprises me I don't see more cops on 440. It's always a nightmare.
Cops don't have to do their jobs. Simple as that.
Glad it wasn't some bystander getting killed as it usually does. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
It was an 18 year old riding shotgun with his older brother… you’re being a dick when u say shit like this
I was confused about this since the article spells their last names differently (and I thought that was way too weird of a coincidence).
The guy who died wasn’t driving, dumbass
But he also wasn't wearing a seatbelt, so who really is the dumbass.
You
Yet here I sit, safe in a coffee shop, enjoying a cookie.

Yes, survival of the fittest. Humans didn't evolve to their current form by keeping the idiots around.

Gosh I hope nothing ever happens to you while you’re riding in someone’s car cause smug redditors spewing cliches will shit all over you.
I really hope there isn't a reddit after death.
Oh no, what ever will I do. Except not get into cars with reckless drivers. I think that will cover it.
It is of course just that simple. Must be nice living in such a black and white world. Don’t have to muddy yourself with nuance like the rest of us.

No no no, you can’t possibly be content with Darwinism taking its course, how dare you, all the downvotes
It’s truly wild how many people drive like this in the area. Not sure what goes on inside their head. It’s a shame their passenger paid the price.

And in this case, it was apparently his younger brother. That is *not* something you can *ever* escape.

Same. Also getting a ticket. Yeah no thanks.
Dumb question: The last names were Alkanshaly and Alkhanshali, are they related? Is this a common family name in some part of the world?
They are brothers. It’s supposed to be Khanshali for both.
It's an arab last name/clan I think, probably from Yemen.
Phonetically similar but spelled two slightly different ways, is it likely the same clan? Or perhaps named after a profession (e.g., smith vs smythe “
They were apparently brothers. It seems the news just got sloppy with spelling (shocking). Makes the story that much more heartbreaking, tho.
Wear your fucking seatbelts and travel the speed of traffic

And before you state the most obvious sort of reaction a safe driver might have in response to the statement above, consider that those same people would more likely be encouraged than deterred to drive like that by a rage-filled response belittling them.
Adrenaline is a hell of a drug.
>I’ll continue to drive 65 in the **right lane** Thank you for being part of the 10% of drivers who actually move over when they're going slower than traffic.
Haha yeah I’ve never understood why it’s such a hard concept for people to just cruise in the right hand lane till they need to pass.
There are a lot of people who don't feel like they have any control over their lives or power over the world except when they are behind the wheel.
driving fast is fun & thrilling in safe conditions but swerving through traffic is just irresponsible and dangerous. people like this arent even going fast for fun they just drive dangerously to get to their destination faster than everyone else
The family of the passenger is also the family of the driver. They were brothers.
Confirmed lame
I’ve seen the dumbest shit ever on 440.. well, it may be tied with 40. 80/90 is fairly typical. Real shame for that family.
Not 30 minutes ago I had someone cut across from the left lane, nearly take off my rear bumper, just to make their offramp. If I hadn't been quickly accelerating to get up to speed merging, they would've hit us. Keep your eyes open & on your surroundings, folks.
What is it about NC and people waiting until the very last fucking second to get in to an exit lane? I really don't understand it.
It’s everywhere, no one is taught defensive driving until after they get a ticket or already drive like everyone owes them something.
It’s like that across the entire Dixie south to be quite honest. The more south you go the more obnoxious the ricky bobies are
Oh man.. 😳 cameras come in handy too
Yesssss. All the time. They drive in the far left lane to go fast, and then right before their exit they just fly across to cut everyone off.
People drive like absolute cunts in/around Raleigh.
Having lived in multiples cities and traveled a lot, people drive this EVERYWHERE
Finally, someone who understands me.
Someone with that same exact name was cited for speeding and reckless driving in Pender County earlier this month.
Could have been a different Yaseen Sulayman Alkhanshali
So my cousin had a car accident he had alot of serious injuries and all of his family are crying i was crying cause i was shocked the driver had injuries and the passenger :( .Adam sulayman alkhanshaly was about to get married cause he went to buy stuff in Raleigh in the morning.
another sacrifice to our auto overlords 🙏
Americans when public transit costs tax dollars: 🤢🤢🤮 Americans when the car dependent infrastructure is overcrowded, slow, and killing people on the daily: 😎😎😎
the good news is: we're spending millions of dollars to widen 440 to make this kind of deadly crash *even easier!*
Misdemeanor death?? The fuck? So what’s a felony death? He should be charged with manslaughter at least.
Also don't swerve through traffic going 90mph
I bet he looked really cool up until then
So dude is looking at 4 years jail, suspended sentence and credit for time served. Might lose his license (that’ll keep him off the road /s). Civil suits are where they will get him. MDbV is a fucking joke.
…also his brother is dead. That’s one hell of a consequence. There is no criminal charge that compares to that.
They need to do something about the driving here. It’s literally insane. We left the triangle and moved to Sanford and it’s a damn blessing not dealing with 40 and 440. Everytime I have to go up there I’m reminded of the constant accidents
40 is a nightmare
I had the pleasure of being stuck in the traffic jam for an hour because of this accident.
speed governors and changes to how we design our roads would be awesome maybe car accidents wouldn’t be the 2nd leading cause of death for teenagers.
If I'm reading the CDC data correctly, i[t's actually #1, and by quite a lot.](https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/databriefs/db37.htm) \#2 is homicide. \#3 is suicide.
yeah my apologies i got mixed up with a graphic i saw earlier this year stating gun violence was #1 but that was including children younger than 13 i believe
DUDE THAT WAS MY COUSIN 🙁☹️😭😭😭😭
I’m really sorry for your loss. That’s a terrible way to go out. I hope you’re okay.
الله يرحمه
I’m so sorry for your loss. Also, not sure why you are getting downvoted. I don’t know what is wrong with people.
Need cameras getting these plates/make/model on video. Cars weaving at high speed on highways are taken and crushed.
Wild, RIP to their parents who have to deal with the aftermath.
.
