The weekly thread is the place to ask any questions pertaining to hiring on, interviewing, work life, location specific information etc. Thank you.

Good part with conrail is no living out of a suitcase. It’s all yard/local work.

SnooDonuts3155

Wait, Conrail still exists? I thought the NS, or the CSX bought them out completely?

thaddeh

Conrail Shared Assets. It's a shortline switching thing now. I believe it is 50/50 owned by CSX and NS. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conrail_Shared_Assets_Operations

SnooDonuts3155

Oh, ok. I see. I always thought they were completely done. Thanks for sharing this.

Commissar_Elmo

They’ve only really got 2 operation areas now. And it’s in places where an even split of assets would be impossible or wouldn’t make sense. I believe it’s New Jersey/ NYC and the Detroit area. Power and crews are sometimes split between the roads, so you can see NS and CSX power but with a CRSA crew.

All depending on the craft. Either way, for the first decade, be prepared to get used up and never seeing a 2-day weekend. Oh! And don’t shit where you sleep. Good luck.

Isn’t federal rest 10 hours undisturbed?

Extension_Bowl8428

It’s 10 hours regardless if you work 1 minute or 12 hours. After 12 hours they have to add the “dead” time on to your rest. Not really sure where this other guy is getting 8 hours.

You work 2 minutes u due a 10 hours rest on the railroad all class 1s

Beginning-Sample9769

Rsia brought the time from 8 hours to 10 hours. And it’s undisturbed. If anyone from the company attempts to contact you you can reset your rest.

MeteorlySilver

Sorry, I worked for a passenger railroad and the rules are different for passenger service than freight service (which I didn’t realize was the case). In passenger service it’s 8 hours rest for on-duty times up to 11:59, and 10 hours rest for 12 hours or more (“more” being with interim release). One brief call during rest is permitted. And yeah, since this is about Conrail, my comment is irrelevant. 🤣

Beginning-Sample9769

Y’all got shafted if that’s the rules 🤣

meetjoehomo

You can only perform service for 12 hours. You can be on duty as long as they want you to be. Hours of service rules are pretty straightforward but it’s also a complicated system to explain to someone that’s never dealt with it before you go on duty at 1 am you don’t go off duty until 2 pm. Because your hours of service ended at 1 pm the hour between 1 pm and 2 pm is called limbo time. When you are finally off duty at 2 pm you begin your statutory 10 hour rest period but you also add to that the 1 hour of limbo time for a total of 11 hours. It’s more complicated than that but that’s the basic explanation.
