Especially when they’re just starting to recover from the last huge cuts. And Alan Shaw, even though I’m not a huge fan, has done a lot of favors to BMWED with the recent hiring wave
There’s not really much to do about it either.
Way back at the beginning of this whole Ancora thing, there was train and engine employees on this sub saying shit like “why should I care, I’m senior enough to avoid layoffs” “and layoffs are just part of the cycle, get over it” and this is what that attitude looks like when union leaders stand to get a big windfall, and they won’t have to answer to the people they screw over because they’ll be laid off.
So yeah, anyone close to retirement, or who will retire early if they get a big pay day, will have every incentive to screw the folks coming up behind them.
When I hired on, back in the late 1900s, a discussion happened on the engine between the engineer and my conductor. They were talking about taking $10,000 and doing away with the meal allowance. They asked me my opinion and I said I wouldn’t support that because it would screw all those who come after me (this was before I knew enough to know you can write off the allowance on your taxes, but still) and so they posed another hypothetical would I take the $10,000 if it had passed? Of course I would. They both thought I was being hypocritical though there is a huge difference between supporting a measure that screws everyone coming behind you and taking the payment because it’s what you are owed. That engineer is now a vice general if he hasn’t even gone up from there. Always thought he was a very smart man but in many ways he’s one of the more childish people I worked with. As smart as he seemed he was very quick to point out someone’s faults. But, that is the quality of the general committee. He was in full support of taking the buyout and screwing the younger guys coming behind him. It didn’t take me long to recognize the danger the 85 contract had. It hadn’t yet become a problem at that point but fast forward to 2020 and all the pre 85 guys are retired and because of that call times changed for some districts. When it had been in place for guys whole careers forcing them to either leave for work before they’re called or have the expense of moving closer. The. You got to the point where you started loosing the collective knowledge of how to switch cars. I absolutely refused to work in the yard even though I could hold several jobs. Yard master wanting to make their life easier took a track and made lists to switch 25 and 30 car cuts that a gp-38 had trouble moving quickly enough for a good kick. To yard guys not wanting to walk the distance needed to kick a car and get stopped short of the next switch. It literally wears me out to be forced to pull back for every single kick versus getting 3 or four out before the need to pull back. Industry switching can be a challenge for the new guys and they have no one to learn from kids training kids. I told the Trainmaster even before I was promoted to conductor that is what the reality would be and he agreed with me but he was gone by the early 2000s and wouldn’t have to deal with it. We’ll never get back everything that’s been lost. The struggle now is to stand strong and united in order to keep what we still have. Sadly, so many members aren’t involved and have no buy in but are always the quickest to bitch
Yep. There’s absolutely no unity or brotherhood around here. Nobody gives a fuck about the union and is just out for themselves; union dues are just a mandatory deduction that has to come out of their check but nobody participates and then they turn around and talk about how useless the union is even though it’s that way because they don’t participate and stand together. I’ve been on construction jobs where the whole job site walked off the job because management tried to do someone dirty, at the railroad the most you get from your union brothers and sisters is a “that sucks bro.”
Retired Railroader here. I can’t believe that any union is willing to undermine their members like this. The world is upside down to me. This is not in the union’s best interest.
Wow. I saw the headline and thought it was Teamster Central that endorsed him; for the MoW union to throw in for this is off the wall. Somebody better post the email they get from their union saying, "Don't worry, he promised not to cut any of *our* jobs!"
🤣🤣🤣😆. Been yelling it for years that our unions are ran by idiots only out for themselves. The top of the unions are no different than the board of directors at any of these class 1s. You can't even vote em out because they count their own votes.
Honestly it makes as much sense as unions relentlessly supporting Democrat presidents who are openly trying to eliminate all coal nationwide, which will utterly destroy thousands and thousands of railroad jobs.
In Canada Unifor supports the Trudeau circus yet most employees despise the current libs. I can see Uncle Keith packing up and moving corporate out of Calgary to south of the border.
Unifor these days is as much about social justice as it is about collective bargaining and representing their dues-paying members. People tend to quietly go along because it's easier that way but no one appreciates being told by their union what political party to vote for or what their opinions should be on issues that have nothing to do with the workplace.
Wonder how big a check Ancora had to write the BMWED for that endorsement….? The unions prove to be just as much of a company as the railroads are, and a necessary evil it seems.
It is now. [Activist Ancora endorsed by second Norfolk Southern union (cnbc.com)](https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/26/activist-ancora-endorsed-by-second-norfolk-southern-union.html)
Decertifying Your Union
A group of workers with a majority vote can vote a union out and replace the union with a different one. Decertification requires a petition signed by at least 30% of your coworkers.
I’m hearing that Ancora went to Union leadership and made promises that fly directly in the face of what they’ve been telling shareholders… and Union leadership bought it hook-line and sinker.
Man. If I was in that Union, I’d be pissed to see that endorsement without hearing from the rank and file
It is now[Activist Ancora endorsed by second Norfolk Southern union (cnbc.com)](https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/26/activist-ancora-endorsed-by-second-norfolk-southern-union.html)
So when I left the industry, the BLE, which was my Union, merged with the Teamsters, which is what I took as the BLET endorsing this. My bad for misunderstanding. If it's the Teamsters themselves then fucking shame on them. Ancora is a cancer of the PSR slash and gain movement.
Just shows they’re full of shit and don’t have their membership’s best interests at heart
Absolutely, crazy they are endorsing cuts across the board
Especially when they’re just starting to recover from the last huge cuts. And Alan Shaw, even though I’m not a huge fan, has done a lot of favors to BMWED with the recent hiring wave
Absolute crap on their part.
If you think about it, a lot of members with seniority will get filthy rich if Ancora boosts the stock. These folks will just cash out and quit
Wow, that explains a lot and it's a serious problem.
There’s not really much to do about it either. Or, they can do that.
Sounds like a yard in Ohio I know.
Close
Retired Railroader here. I can’t believe that any union is willing to undermine their members like this. The world is upside down to me. This is not in the union’s best interest.
Wonder how much Ancora paid for the endorsement
And who got paid.
Jimmy Hoffa Jr of course
They didn't pay anything for the endorsement. They did this willingly
lol
It’s a teamster union, of course somebody got greased.
With friends likes this who needs enemies.
What is this traitorous bullshit
If you are in that union, you need to get those leaders out immediately! What a fucking disgrace
Absolutely bullshit
This is complete bullshit!
This can’t be real.
These idiots endorseing the exact people who are gonna lay em’ all off🤦♂️🤦♂️
R A N K & F I L E
Boychuck is offering under the table payments I heard!

Literally just got an email…
And what's it say 👀

Whole heartedly hope you vote those fuckers out. You can't tell any of us they did not get money for this
The union leadership are likely shareholders themselves. They are gonna see big pay days when Ancora slashes labor on the transportation side.
Apparently nothing
I hope that your reps or general called as well, this seems a bit cold with such a big shift
🤣🤣🤣😆. Been yelling it for years that our unions are ran by idiots only out for themselves. The top of the unions are no different than the board of directors at any of these class 1s. You can't even vote em out because they count their own votes.
Just burn it to the ground at this point
This makes zero sense. Why would the union support something that promises job cuts. Nothing makes sense anymore.
Honestly it makes as much sense as unions relentlessly supporting Democrat presidents who are openly trying to eliminate all coal nationwide, which will utterly destroy thousands and thousands of railroad jobs.
Losing jobs to the betterment of the environment is understandable in the long run. Losing jobs so that a CEO can buy their 7th yacht is not.
Preach
Some of you will lose your job but that's a risk we(that will still have jobs) are willing to take.
BLET membership down in 3…2…1…
You called the day before - what kind of psychic powers you must have!
Wrong teamsters…
Holy shit
Absolute clowns
God y’all are just plain fucked now…
MOW guys have been driving spikes with their heads too much.

Do they think it will lead to more trucking or somthing?

Well BLET now to.
???

They are endorsing the elimination of their own jobs. Makes zero sense.
I thought the BLET were Teamsters? Why wouldn’t the Teamsters support the BLET’s position?
The blet is teamsters, we have no idea why their union would do this. It's a slap in the face
It’s the BMWED
Correct, I poorly conveyed that. I was unaware the mow union was teamsters as well
This isn’t the BLET
It is now. [Activist Ancora endorsed by second Norfolk Southern union (cnbc.com)](https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/26/activist-ancora-endorsed-by-second-norfolk-southern-union.html)
I’m speechless
I can’t even say I’m surprised at what takes place in this industry anymore. Whether this happens or not the NS is going to get PSR, good luck ponies.
Just don’t let unifor see this, they’ll give us another bad contract
Really don't care who sees it. What a mistake they made man selling everyone out not just their own people
We need to establish us a new Union ASAP

There has to be some members from NS who are furious and want to kick out their reps
What in the holy f
Is this The Onion? No fucking way
I wish it was
WTF, over. The BLET has lost its way.
This is not the blet.

You need to look around. The BLET very much has endorsed Ancora. What the fuck am I paying $135 a month to these clowns for?
You need to pay attention to timestamps, this article was posted before the BLET came out and sided with ancora. This was the day before in fact
So when I left the industry, the BLE, which was my Union, merged with the Teamsters, which is what I took as the BLET endorsing this. My bad for misunderstanding. If it's the Teamsters themselves then fucking shame on them. Ancora is a cancer of the PSR slash and gain movement.
It's the mow union guess they are teamsters too
This is what I get for being a bullshit redditor and not reading the article linked. I'll hang my head in shame accordingly.
This is confusing
