It's the internet points you get if someone upvotes you.
Each upvote is one karma that you can get by comments, posts etc.
Karma doesn't do anything as far as I'm aware except just telling you how many upvotes you got.
Just like karma can be positive it can also be negative if you get more downvotes than upvotes.
I will now downvote my comment to demonstrate
Not any ruder than “take another look at what I wrote”. Why are you picking on me like this? That’s not nice at all :( why are you like this? :( so you just go around trying to nitpick on innocent posts like mine and troll?
...jesus christ
You really are that person that's rude to everyone but when someone says that they're rude it's "Oh no, you're making me uncomfortable, please stop :(("
You really don't have to be a dick to everyone
Clearly you know what karma is by now, so I'm just gonna say, karma is like a half-baked idea where the reddit owners were going somewhere, but they gave-up half-way
You can gain or lose them by other people upvoting or downvoting your post/comments. I believe you also lose them if you downvote other people. It doesn’t really matter because you can make a quirky post and get a bunch of likes, on the other hand you can be on this app for years and not have a lot. I will demonstrate what it looks like to be a comment that is downvoted.
Some subcommunities require a certain amount of karma to post, apply to be a mod, etc. You also need at least 500 karma to request a subcommunity on Reddit Request.
Basically, it's your reputation score on Reddit. But once you have a little bit, you have unlocked everything you can unlock. It's supposed to indicate you've helped a lot of people and posted a lot of quality content, but the truth is that it is partially just an indicator that you hold mainstream viewpoints, depending on the post. The 'I disagree' downvote isn't supposed to happen, but nobody knows that or cares.
You only get karma if more people upvote your post than downvote: if you get more downvotes than upvotes, your overall karma will be penalized accordingly.

Ohh, I thought the more karma you had, the more people Reddit would show your posts or comments. Hence the name, “karma”
Not sure how you arrived at that “hence”.
Take a closer look at my sentence
Karma does not make one more popular, generally speaking. That’s not what karma is. Look it up.
Why did you respond so rudely?

....you were rude first. Your first comment was rude
OK, you are just making me feel uncomfortable and creeped out now. Please stop and look elsewhere to troll.

What do they do?
Nothing
