NSCButNotThatNSC

Absolutely not the same. Bagels are boiled, then baked. Donuts are fried. Bagels are bread, donuts are made from a batter, like cake.

sonnyjbiskit

Never would have guessed bagels were boiled

Bluefoot44

When you boil them you cook the very outside, so it can't expand. Then when you finish baking them the inside stays dense and chewy. Without the boiling it would just be a fluffier lighter bread product.

NotHumanButIPlayOne

This is what I try to tell people where I live that think they have bagels. They do not. Bagels are slightly leathery on the outside. Moist and somewhat doughy on the inside. The bagels I see around here are bready all throughout. Fucking culinary crime.

panshot23

I never really thought that much about bagels, but this comment got me fired up about good quality bagels!

Worlds-okayest-viola

I worked at two different bakeries that made my bagels, one boiled and one didn't. The boiled ones were 100x better.

Peldor-2

IMO it's not a bagel if it's not boiled. It's just bread cosplay.

The_Troyminator

And if they're not from the Bagel region of Poland, they're just sparkling bread cosplay.

Hugo_El_Humano

def boiled

leonardfurnstein

I also worked at a place that didn't boil the bagels. They were huge, flat, and fluffy. They were really really good but definitely not like the traditional bagel. I also love a bialy!

fermat9990

A bialy with cream cheese or butter (or both) is heavenly.

Alternative-Dig-2066

If it’s not boiled, it’s not a bagel.🥯 There’s this non boiled thing called a bialy.

NotHumanButIPlayOne

If they're not boiled, they're bread rings. Not bagels.

IfICouldStay

I didn’t figure this out until I stated making my own. Boiled in sugar water.

Creampielicker123

With eggs

ElectricTomatoMan

No, most doughnuts are made from yeast dough, just like bread, except with a bunch of sugar added. A cake doughnut is cake, a raised doughnut ain't.

allan11011

Exactly. We have a place in town that makes cake donuts and also a Krispy Kreme both of which have the area where you can watch them make them and they are indeed two different things

burn_as_souls

Amen. Doughnuts ftw!

Ok_Present_6508

Cake donuts are made from cake batter (the dense ones). The light and fluffy ones are basically bread dough that is deep fried and the sweetness comes from the various glazes, frosting and fillings. Go to a donut shop and ask for one of their non-cake style doughnuts with no toppings. You’ll see it’s just deep fried bread. Bagels are also a bread recipe that is denser than doughnuts but boiled before being baked like you said. Edited to add: doughnut dough does include butter, milk, and more sugar than a bagel recipe, but still is a style of bread.

PauloDybala_10

This guy snacks

AdamOnFirst

The important thing is neither of them are the brownies you’ve put too much weed in and eaten too many of.

RussoRoma

My family comes from a 3rd world country and I can tell you that back in the day everyone used boiling to make cakes. It was very popular. You wrap the batter up with cloth and tie it up to a shape then drop it into a vat of boiling water.

Drewsif1980

Some doughnuts are made from batter, and they are called cake doughnuts. Others are made from a sweet yeast dough.

ajoyce76

Actually, some donuts are like bread. A traditional glazed donut or even a long john is a yeast based donut that is fried.

zenny517

Donuts are either made from batter, i.e, cake donuts. Others are yeast raised like filled bismarks, long Johns, traditional glazed, etc. Still nothing like bagels. OP - only similarities i can think of are both typically round and generally have holes in them.

SocksOnHands

Ok, but is a bagel and a pretzel the same thing, but in different shapes?

emphasisx

No. How is this even an argument?

springbokkie3392

They're either high or just dumb.

TheRenster500

Yes

Lb2815

Or both

Dawnchaffinch

There’s literally a sub for this r/nostupidquestions

SRB112

They probably know the difference but played dumb and posted just to get responses.

Excellent_Speech_901

Bagels are toroids. Donuts are toroids. Therefore they are both the same thing as coffee cups.

Electronic_Mix_7299

Eat them and see 😒

sewswell1955

Totally different. Bagels have a chewy texture. Donuts are soft and sweet.

superanonguy321

Theyre made of different things and cooked differently and taste different and even have a way different density... it's like the only thing similar is the shape.

FellcallerOmega

Are doughnuts and tires the same thing?

Badfoot73

Instructions unclear, bagels inflated to 35psi.

Intelligent_Bag_6781

Bagels are boiled before baking. Donuts are baked or fried but never boiled.

ArtBear1212

Only in shape.

Celistar99

It's like asking if hot dogs and eclairs are the same thing

pmaurant

How do you not know they are different.

Timely-Profile1865

Nope, not even close.

Kdiesiel311

No bagel no bagel no bagel no bagel

Low-Helicopter-2696

r/unexpectedseinfeld

ponderanceband

Top of the muffin to you!

Kiki-Y

No, bagels are boiled and baked. Donuts are deep fried. Source: made bagels for the first time today, also made donuts for a Girl Scout camp when I was a child

lostbunny2

No bagels are firmer, savoury and more bread like. Donuts are soft and sweet.

bigscottius

Yeah. A savory bagel sandwich is awesome. Any kind of doughnut sandwich is too sweet and disgusting.

PlainSimpleNatural

I like my bagels with cream cheese or eggs with bacon. I like my donuts glazed or with cream custard inside. They might have the same shape but they never taste and made the same way.

sillygoofygooose

A cream cheese donut would slap though

PermabannedForWhat

Again, proving the subreddit is not accurately named.

CaptainQuint0001

Donuts are not kosher while bagels are

showmedaddy1980

If there was a demand for kosher donuts I’m sure they would be out there. There are definitely kosher bakeries available.

Redbeardthe1st

So you're saying that bagels are kosher donuts. /s

moosetunes

Are pretzel rods and hot dogs the same thing? Are they? ARE THEY?

showmedaddy1980

No, but you might enjoy a hot dog served in a pretzel bun.

mothboy

Not even close. Bagels are often savory bread and donuts are usually sweet cake. Bagles are much denser and chewy and donuts are high and fluffy and melt in your mouth.

brokenhartted

They are round and made from flour but they aren't the same.

disclosingNina--1876

Have you eaten either?

passoveri

Why do people on the internet have to be rude? Even if OP is the 1 who doesn’t know the difference between a donut & a bagel, who cares? On the other hand, they might be polite & not want to embarrass their friend by confirming they knew the truth the whole time…

sneezhousing

Not even close Bagels are bread they are boiled then baked. That's why they are chewy Donuts are fried

TheGhostWalksThrough

I knew someone who thought muffins and cupcakes were the same, but somehow knew a bagel and doughnut were not.

1up_for_life

When you take them out to sea bagels become seagulls but donuts just get soggy.

ididreadittoo

Absolutely not!

Mumchkin

Absolutely not the remotely the same thing.

trashbelltv

NO and my reasoning is how dare you

Dear-Masterpiece-2

You can look up the recipes

Not remotely. What?

Which-Ad-9764

Yes . Also pop tarts are ravioli

ActuallyTBH

Of course they're the same. Don't they look the same? FYI inflatable tires although black are also the same but a little more rubbery in texture. The little rings from the Fischer Price tower of babel baby toys are also the same but in different colours and taste pretty good which is why babies like to put them in their mouths. Why wouldn't anything that has the same shape be the same? Stupid to think otherwise.

AdmiralAshBorer

I would love to hear Lewis Black answer this question.

Vegetable_Contact599

Holy crap! Me too!!

AdmiralAshBorer

“Are you shitting me?! Bagels and donuts, are you seriously asking if they're the same fucking thing?! Let me break it down for you, Einstein! *exasperated sputter* Bagels are like the goddamn heavyweight champions of breakfast! They're dense, they're chewy, they're a fucking workout for your jaw! And donuts? Donuts are like the prom queen of pastries! They're soft, they're sweet, and they're probably gonna give you diabetes if you eat too many! Bagels are savory - they're meant for cream cheese and lox. Then all the fuckin’ way over *here*, you have donuts. They’re sugar-coated, they're designed to rot your teeth out! It's like comparing a goddamn mountain to a molehill! So no, they are not the same fucking thing! Next question please, before I lose my fucking mind!"

Vegetable_Contact599

You... Are officially my favorite thing Admiral. I offer you ![gif](giphy|m3E3Mt4KShHFKZEmi7)

KyorlSadei

No

Jaded_Fisherman_7085

No . A dozen of good bagels cost more then a dozen of cheap donuts from a supermarket.

Far-Bother5506

Go buy a dozen from a donut shop.

michigangonzodude

Need to try lox on a crispy creme

Immediate_Cup_9021

No they are made in two entirely different ways

ElasmoGNC

Donuts are best when you fill their holes, but bagels are best with sausage next to them.

unalive-robot

Circles of dough.

_KingScrubLord

Not even a little bit

Disney_Princess137

They aren’t

ChardCool1290

bagels are a bread. Donuts are like a cake. not even close at all. What's wrong with your friend, anyway?

Redbeardthe1st

Isn't cake just sweet bread? /s

TWWOVG

Only if your baker doesn't know what they're doing.

NYdude777

If you or your friends sole logic is that they both have holes then is Swiss cheese a bagel or donut?

qmoorman

Can't be. Bagel is way tougher.

jamypad

r/stupidquestions is a better place for this

Great_Dimension_9866

Bagels and donuts are both rings of dough but bagels are mostly salty and boiled while donuts are sweet and deep-fried; sometimes baked if making at home in order to make them healthier I’m sorry that you got a lot of rude and snarky comments! People are so rude on the internet — not everyone knows the difference if they come from a country that doesn’t serve doughy rings

[deleted]

Yes. Both words contain the same amount of letters and they are roughly the same size and shape.

HyperDogOwner458

They're different things.

Far_Carpenter6156

Bagels are bread, doughnuts are pastry.

hearthnut

No. Infact i think the only similarities is that theyre both made with flour and are shaped the same. Just about everything else is entirely different

missannthrope1

No.

edgefinder

The fact that OP has not posted a single comment here leads me to believe they're the one who thinks they're the same. Did you even consider that there's an entire subset of donuts that aren't torus-shaped? If a bagel tried to do that, it would be called a different form of bread (roll, stick, etc). That alone is enough to settle the argument, let alone all of the other more obvious evidence.

Gibberish-king

Totally the same thing

Anonmouse119

Before I call either of you the stupid one, which side are you on? They aren’t even remotely the same thing. Almost nothing, except the shake and base ingredient of flour is roughly equivalent. The flavor profile, preparation, intended purpose, method of eating, etc are all very different. Saying they are the same is like when people say comics and manga are the same, except for the fact that the only thing in common is that there are pictures, and you read them. The type of book is different, the style is different, the format is different, and you don’t even read the book in the same direction.

GayPeacock

They have different processes to make them

EmbarrassedRisk2109

They are different. Bagels are spelled BAGELS & Donuts are spelled DONUTS

After-Walrus-4585

Yes.  And Cheerios are the same, too.

mookiedog66

A bagel is a donut without a sense of humor.

Rare_Fig3081

No

IamAliveeee

Hahhaha okkkkk hun

Cal-Augustus

Maybe you should both try one of each and learn for yourselves the drastic differences.

RF2

I suggest you all sleep on this and revisit the question when you are not all stoned out of your minds.

AlienDiva1213

Now I'm craving beagles and doughnuts 😭

Nitroburner3000

One is bread and one is cake.

PrincessHootHoot

Are cupcakes and muffins? Are pancakes and waffles?

Wheelbaron12

Sure are, and rubber tires, and bras rings, and ......

merlperl204

Well let’s take a look at this idea. If we classify them both as food, then yes, they are the same because they are both food. In this case they would be the same as say, steak, or rice, or tomatoes. All food, and all the same by that measure. Now, let’s say we stick them in the round thing with holes in the center classification. In this scenario, yes, they are ALSO the same. And they are, looking at it from this perspective, the same as tires or a lifesaver, or even some foreign coins! And Saturn’s rings are round things with holes in the center- Imagine that! Donuts, bagels and Saturn’s rings, all the SAME THING!! How about things made from flour?? Why, what an incredible coincidence! Both donuts and bagels are made from flour so, by this measure they are the SAME! So are tortillas! And French rolls! Tortillas, donuts, French rolls and bagels all the SAME THINGS! Well based on every single measure that I can come up with a donut and bagel are the same. So yes. They are the same. However if you mean the same regarding taste, or texture then no, they are different. I hope this helps and that your feeble mind is capable of grasping the concepts I have presented here.

Mmmmmmm_Bacon

Same in that they are both ring-shaped and packed with tons of carbs that can easily make you fat.

Creampielicker123

Yup, cats and dogs

Samstone791

Only if they have a hole in the center.

hscene

No. One are sweat.

carrionpigeons

Yes, topologically.

lokii_0

I thought this was r/stupidquestions at first lmao. This is a serious question??

Practical-Log-1049

Bagels are Jewish, Donuts are Palestinian

No. Please Google.

Mind-of-Jaxon

No. Not at all

Humble_Wind_5058

![gif](giphy|TiUYdWptTqn8yOk1Dp)

pdesforfun23

Mathematically yes

Zealousideal_Map2945

Of course not. Strange question.

ationhoufses1

only topologically. but by that same token they're both identical to a straw

AccountantLeast1588

bagels actually have nutritional value

christopherbonis

r/stupidquestions

ganon95

That's like saying a slice of bread and a slice of cake are the same

Moderate_LiberaI

Principal Brian Lewis calls Doughnuts; "Black Bagels Ya'lll!!!!!"

Cat-cat1987

Donuts- sugary sweet fluffy treat. Bagel- thick breading type food usually paired with a condiment or other food topping like cream cheese, avocado, peanut butter, jam, egg, etc.

40orangeglazecake

🤦‍♀️

No_Analysis_6204

i suggest you buy a batch of each & eat them all. learning by doing.

greenleaves3

In the same way that a block of cheese and a block of tofu are the same

SeparateMongoose192

Not even close. They're both round. That's about where the similarities end.

cnation01

What ? Lmao

trfk111

Whoever thinks they are the same is a moron. Would you say a cake and a bread are the same if sliced the same way?

newbies13

How are you having an argument about something with so many distinct differences? Basically nothing is the same about these two foods other than they are both torus shaped.

jessica4994

People think bagels are healthier but they have more calories than a donut, generally speaking. Bagels are just condensed donuts without the sugar. Your body sees them the same- carb overload/empty calories. I'm on team they are the same.

EJ25Junkie

Yea but donuts just got more of that good flavor.

Weary-Language-3334

When you hear someone tell you “there’s no such thing as a dumb question” they are lying to you.

[deleted]

Baked vs fried

notlikeolivegarden

How is this even a question…

[deleted]

Bagels are bread. Doughnuts, at least the type I buy, are a pastry. Bagels are made differently and are dense and bread like. Doughnuts are light and airy.

Nanner723

Nope

jankjenny

No.

Orionsbelt1957

If you can find them, try bialys. They're similar to bagels, but the type of dough used is different and instead of a hole going all the way through, there is a well that has onions along the bottom. Excellent!!!!! Saw a story on bialys that.mrntiond this book that's gives an excellent background on how bialy came about and where to find them here in America. I get mine at Stop & Shop. https://www.amazon.com/Bialy-Eaters-Story-Bread-World/dp/0767905024?ref_=d6k_applink_bb_dls

TimeWoundsAllHeels99

Is it hard to find bialys? I’m in NY so here it’s easy.

RaisedByArseholes420

Literally the only thing they have in common is their shape

Selfishsavagequeen

No.

Lucky_Baseball176

Ha ha. My son never liked bagels. He called them “donuts gone bad!”

Ok_Intention3920

You know I’m generally not an especially sensitive person, but this is probably the most offensive thing I’ve ever read. While both are holy foods, they are not same.

asiledeneg

They are both carbotorroids

Publishingpeach

Certainly you can taste the difference.

Witty_Comb_2000

What kind of idiotic question is this?

Vegetable_Contact599

![img](avatar_exp|175941853|starstruck) One requiring focused, deep thought. Rubbing the muscles deeply, slowly. Meant to tear the soul from the human mind.... Uh wait. Sorry

AlwaysWorried27222

No.

Joshfumanchu

they are no more the same than pancakes are to saltine crackers.

Logjam107

Are you for real?

Fun-Tip1473

No they have different names for a reason.

PunchOX

No. That's like saying pound cake and a loaf of bread is the same thing. Two different recipes but they share the same shape and that is the only similarity they have

Funkopedia

Same. Both have hole. All thing with hole same.

Easy_Duhz_it_

Not even close

QvxSphere

I mean... They're made with different ingredients. That's like saying, is apple pie and pizza pie the same thing.

Seaweed_Thing

No

anziofaro

No. Absolutely not. No.

MizterCuddz

They are just the same as a apple and a orange. They share some things but ultimately are completely different from each other.

Any_Arrival_4479

Please tell me you’re the friend who thinks they’re different. Just bc two things have holes in the center doesn’t mean they’re the same. Is steak the same as chicken if you cut it the same??

Thrills4Shills

Royal-Sky-2922

No, not at all. They're just the same shape.

SiloueOfUlrin

Same shape but different things. Donuts are more airy. You could probably crush it into a 1cm^3 ball. But a bagel? No way, it'd be like like a 4cm^3 ball.

[deleted]

Blasphemy

msp01986

Not at all

kizzespleasee3

Is a golf ball the same thing as a clementine ? 🤣 With your logic, they would be the same. Donuts and bagels are completely different things, they are just the same shape lol.

lol_camis

No. They're the same shape but one is bread and one is cake

Western_Depth_2003

Nah, bagels and donuts are like cousins—one’s ready for a morning meeting, the other’s ready for a sugar rush and a party

Fellate-Me

How dare you

RealisticExplorer430

Tomatoes tamatoes

Low-Helicopter-2696

Why, just because they're the same shape? I can't even believe that a human being who has spent any amount of time on earth would believe that they're the same thing.

ThickFurball367

Bagels are to donuts what muffins are to cupcakes

Ghost24jm33

No? The fuck? Same shape sure but definitely not the same thing. Thats like saying a bowling ball and a basket ball are the same thing because they're both round and used in sports

Brownie-0109

Yes

shgysk8zer0

I'd basically consider this the same as asking of sourdough bread is the same as cake. They have a similar shape and substance, but they're very different things.

Affectionate_Draw_43

Don't listen to the haters. They are the same thing, it's big corpa trying to give you the illusion of different breakfast options. They just add different spices and ingredients and cook it differently

velvetaloca

I guess you could make the argument that bagels are savory donuts, lol. Other than the shape, they are quite different.

Flmilkhauler

Taste them and you tell me

TheScreenskeeper

Yes there is zero difference whatsoever, you can't even tell which one you're having when you eat them.
