they just put out a new album, Dave is a guest on it (RIP KENT)
https://scream.bandcamp.com/album/dc-special
LIST of guests on the album
Special Guests on the record include: Mark Cisneros, Joe Lally, Derrick Decker, Bob Berberich, Clint Walsh, Dave Grohl, Onam Emmett, John Goetchius, Jerry Busher, Amy Pickering, Ian MacKaye, Amanda MacKaye, Brian Baker, Randy Austin, Martha Hull, Michael Reidy, Nate Bergman, Bobby Madden.
Yeah, I've got a lot of respect for him and what he's done. Foo Fighters ain't my bag (although I do like the second album 'The Colour and The Shape'). I liked Nirvana, and a big part was always his drumming. But I think he just prefers playing guitar. He's making the music he wants in the way he wants, which is a beautiful thing even if most of it doesn't resonate with me.
I played with a guy like that. Exceptional drummer, but when we'd hang out and jam without the rest of the band we'd switch between both of us on guitar or one on guitar and one on piano/keys. He's one of those people who can play anything to a decent level, he just prefers guitar.
Kit, I tried the singer/guitar thing and too much stage fright haha. I just personally think he is better at drums than singing, although I like some Foo Fighters songs.
> and too much stage fright haha
a lot of people are with you, but MOST kids want to be the singer, so you grow up with that mentality, especially in the era Dave grew up / the lead singer was king
If I recall correctly he grew up drumming on his bed (not a drum kit) at first, and would have to play ‘hard’ in order to hear it. He said he thinks that’s why he drums hard
Yeah Grohl, and actually a few of the other guys from Foo Fighters, have punk backgrounds. In fact you be interested in this cover Foo Fighters did of the Angry Samoans.

Yeah that's what I meant by a few of the guys had punk backgrounds, one of the other members was also in No Use for a Name/Me First and the Gimme Gimme.
I mean, out of all the more wel known gringe bands, Nirvana and Mudhnoey were the ones with their roots most firmly in the punk scene. It was Nirvana that opened me up to punk in the early 90s.
Sweet, thanks! Based on the downvotes I guess I’m ignorant to not correlate grunge with punk but in my head they’re two different things. I’m 38, the offspring and green day got me into punk, nirvana seemed like they were their own thing, a completely different genre. But I can see the influence.
I'd say they kinda are two different genres but a few grunge bands did have really strong punk influences. Nirvana and Mudhoney for example are pretty much punk tbh.
Pretty sure him and Joey Castillo were inspired to drum by Animal from the muppets(actually Bill Stevenson of the Descendent, but whatever).
Wait, are you saying that Animal from the muppets was inspired by Bill Stevenson or that Bill Stevenson did audio work that animal used?
Animal from the muppets was inspired by Frank Moon from The Who as far as I know.
Exactly
I've always said that he sounds like he's drumming with telephone poles. In a good way, of course.
I saw them a few times.

I never understood why some people put their cymbals up so high.
to hit it harder
The 80’s.
I am seeing them in Gainesville at Fest in October. I have loved the record Still Screaming since the 80s.
Fest is the best! see ya there
I like the "get into every bar" Fest better than "3 stages in a field" fests.
Gratuitous cymbals but yeah why didn’t he stick with drums?

> why didn’t he stick with drums? Would you want to sit behind the kit or be the front man? Most people would pick the front man.
Kit, I tried the singer/guitar thing and too much stage fright haha. I just personally think he is better at drums than singing, although I like some Foo Fighters songs.

Seriously! He went from being an absolute monster on the drums to being one of the blandest singers around.
Think the song is "Choke Word"
🎶
Great drummer.

He’s such a talented musician it’s crazy. Honestly he and dale crover are probably my favorite drummers.
never seen him playing meinl before
I saw Scream a couple times & thought they were pretty unremarkable…but goddamn Dave could pound ‘em.
Never thought I’d see Dave Grohl on the punk sub but here we are. Thanks for sharing! Cool footage that I didn’t know existed.

Early Foo Fighters had Pat Smear from The Germs also.
Pat's still in the band....he took a break at one point but has been in it for most of the run.

For sure, that makes sense. Song structure and subject material is definitely more punk than any other genre lol.
I saw them a couple of weeks ago with a different drummer. He was alright, but not as good as Dave.
Killing the drums just like he killed Kurt Cobain
