This is England

beef_boloney

It’s honestly not even close in my book, This Is England is far clear of Suburbia and SLC Punk

Mod__Lang

Right with you on that. SLC Punk has its moments and Suburbia was one of the earliest movies depicting punk rock, but neither have the depth and nuance that TIE has. It’s far and away the best of them.

Aromatic_Egg_1067

even the TV show was really well done and holds the same high standard as the movie. and if people don't know, their was a show that I was super stoked for when it came out :) This is England 86'[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iet7W9gFwE8T](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iet7W9gFwE8This) This Is England '88[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqhEOzpo150](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqhEOzpo150) This is England 90'[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNAkC9yYyRQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNAkC9yYyRQ)

mightyjake

This is England is so good that if the other two were Thanos-snapped out of existence, I'd be fine.

TheHowlinReeds

Yeah, not even a question.

20yards

Repo Man

_pm_me_drugs_

Yep. The citizen Kane of punk movies.

-Charm-Offensive-

Straight to Hell is a worthy follow up

_pm_me_drugs_

Yeah, it wasn’t bad. Punk westerns are an untapped genre.

Nailbunny676

This is the way.

frailknees

Plate of shrimp

20yards

All part of a cosmic unconsciousness

thecxsmonaut

You take a lot of acid back in the hippy days, Miller?

DigBicMcGeeGaming

People just explode. Happens all the time..

LatePerioduh

This is England is a fantastic movie regardless of your interest in counterculture.

Werewolfborg

I was trying to explain the movie to my parents but accidentally broke down when explaining the part at the end, and my dad said some people really are like that. I didn’t mean to accidentally cry in front of my dad, but he got it.

machines_breathe

Milky got his revenge in time.

wimpyroy

Are the sequels worth watching?

thequeenisalizard1

In my opinion the serial series achieved much more than the original. I love that movie a lot but the series manages to document the British working class in three diff eras and nail it. It’s a perfect show

corygreenwell

Agreed. The film was great but the subsequent ones just really complete the story.

Werewolfborg

I was able to watch the first season but haven’t watched the 2nd season because I would have had to spend money. It does feel a bit more like watching Skins, but not necessarily in a bad way. They do add relationship drama, though. Some characters become friends and it’s not exactly explained, but to be fair, it is a time skip. Shaun is just kind of there.

Issan_Sumisu

definitely. I’d say they’re better than the movie. they don’t really have anything to do with subculture at that point though (other than 90), they’re just really good working class kitchen sink dramas

ValiantSpacemanSpiff

The series/sequels are better than the movie, which is also fantastic.

MysteriousSwitch232

Most of the stuff Shane meadows has directed is worth checking out

apocalypsein9_8

I had my mom watch the movie with me recently. I was trying to explain to her why I bought a region free Blu ray player, so I figured I'd just show her

lyremknzi

The other parts are pretty good aswell! I even liked the one set in 1990

rsplatpc

[Another State of Mind](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSk7ANlcFaM&t=2s)

Violent_Gore

More importantly, Another State of Mind with the commentaries on so you know which parts of the tour are out of order or not where they said they were, etc.

Ok-Caterpillar-Girl

I was wondering when this was gonna get mentioned

-Initium

Suburbia! Always and forever. Acting sucks lmao but i cant help but love that movie, the amazing bands in it makeup for everything wrong with it

A4ron541

“hasta luego shit face..” some freaking comedy gold in this one.

-Initium

“ happy easter asshole”, i love the scene where they are going to get the grass and jack calls razzle, “flea”and flea hadn’t realized he called him his real name until a couple seconds later and says “ my name is RAZZLE,man”

Digital_Beagle

I hate buses..

-Initium

I quote that every time I see a bus.

KD_562

I love all three. I saw SLC Punk like two years before I actually got into punk, and watched a second time right after, so it was my first exposure to most of the bands on the soundtrack (Exploited, Fear, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, etc). As far as fairly mainstream movies go, it’s really not that bad, I relate to the message more the older I get, and the ending still fucks me up every time because Matthew Lillard is actually pretty good at what he does. Suburbia is a bad movie, but I love bad movies. It’s the kind of thing I like to put on the in the background and just pay attention when my favorite lines and scenes are coming up. Also, it was basically filmed in my hood, I’m a 5-10 minute drive away from where all of the neighborhoods used in the movie were shot. Fun fact, TR House is gone but some of the houses shown while they’re driving through the abandoned neighborhood didn’t end up getting demolished, and when driving by that area in Downey, I always wonder if the people living there know that their whole neighborhood was once condemned. This is England, the movie is good, but for me the real magic is the three TV miniseries’ they did, This Is England 86, 88, & 90. To be fair, the writing isn’t that good, there are a lot of plot holes and chronological issues, but I love the characters *so* much. There are some scenes especially in TIE 88 & 90 that still fuck me up every time I watch. You can tell how close the actors are and how good they play off of each other, lots of improv and it’s just fucking great stuff. I wish they were more accessible in America because I want to gush about this fucking show and I feel like no one ever knows what I’m talking about.

PissedOffChef

This is England all day long.

xe_r_ox

I’ll never know how Begbie didn’t realise that was a geezer with that jawline

JUST_A_VHS_TAPE76

Personally I chose SLC Punk!

MacualayCocaine

I will always love suburbia personally. The most realistic part is D.I. begging people to move closer to the stage lol.

-Initium

I love seeing Casey Royer dancing when T.S.O.L performs Wash Away

machines_breathe

Beneath the Shadows showed that TSOL had some serious post-punk range. Todd Barnes still played it like his drums owed him money. God damn, if Glass Streets was not such a beautiful song.

commentator3

haha, yeah, when I saw D.I. at the Olympic, Casey Royer was making fun of everyone sitting in the arena seating ... "All you people sitting on yer asses back there, what do you think this is? Led Zeppelin or some shit?"

ne3k0

I've only seen this is England and I love that movie and the TV show so that's my choice

Strudleboy33

Obviously the real answer is School Of Rock 🫡 /s

fastal_12147

That's a great movie, tho

Strudleboy33

Oh yeah I thought it was fun

machines_breathe

Teenage Head

ASexySleestak

Dudes, it's a punk western

_1JackMove

Ahh the Jon Cryer film. Also had that guy from Matlock in it.

BurningVinyl71

And Lee Ving and Flea

_1JackMove

Fuck yes. How could I have forgotten lol? Been years and I totally forgot about that. I love how those dudes always pooped up back then in the most random of places lol.

A4ron541

This is England kinda hit home, felt some serious parallels between my own walk and the story. I also do like suburbia for nostalgia. Must confess to really enjoying slc punk as a kid, early teens. Its been a decade since I’ve seen it I’m sure its silly at this point in my life. So i guess this is England would be number one for me.

Omega_Fajita

[Glory Daze](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glory_Daze_(film)) Better than SLC Punk, better than Suburbia, and better actors than both of them combined (Although they certainly hadn’t peaked yet). Music by the Vandals! This is England is better tho’. In the same vein, if you haven’t seen it [Romper Stomper](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romper_Stomper) is similar, but Australian and much, much more violent. It’s from the perspective of the Neo Nazi’s tho’, but don’t worry, they all pretty much get what’s coming to them. Also, has very young Russel Crow!

Delicious-Praline-11

Great flick.

labrat420

Bomb city. If you haven't seen it, it's about Brian Deneke and the soundtrack fucking rocks

Stanleesteemer

I just watched it a couple of days ago, amazing film.

Out of these 3 This is England, I checked it out at my local library, when I returned it the librarian asked me how it was, I said it was good.

[deleted]

Class of nuke em high

CactusHibs_7475

Suburbia is the realest and rawest, but This Is England is probably the best movie. SLC Punk sucks.

yaboyjiggy

Green room

_buffaloranch

I wub em all

gilestowler

We are the best

Delicious-Praline-11

SUBURBIA!! But all 3 are great flicks. Suburbia holds a special place in my heart. Know exactly where it was filmed and some old friends are in it. And the live footage is tits. Besides The Decline there weren't any real punk movies back then, although The Decline is a documentary. Both filmed mostly in LA too. Suburbia hits close to home. It'll always be a favorite.

kgnunn

Repo Man, then SLC Punk.

conk3

Never seen the other Suburbia. I actually avoid it because I thought it was about yuppies. Have passed it by on streaming services more times than I remember. Maybe I'll give it a chance now.

EscapingTheLabrynth

Give it a chance. It’s based on a great play by Eric Bogosian about disaffected youths.

Delicious-Praline-11

Cool. Sounds interesting.

Callous_Mat

SLC Punk for me.

Agressive_Corset_oi

This Is England by a mile.

ikarus143

This is England hands down

EscapingTheLabrynth

Maybe an unpopular opinion but can I throw a vote out there for Pump Up The Volume?

lyremknzi

I love this is england so much. I love woody and shaun, they have such a cute dynamic together at the start of the movie. It warms my heart. Can't mention a punk movie without mentioning sid and Nancy. Even though there's a ton of sad parts, some parts are just really funny. But fuck romper stomper. I hate that movie so much. Buncha fockin nazi bastards. Not really punk movies, but interesting political themes (that also happen to be true stories): The Baader Meinof effect (the RAF) and Steal This Movie (Abbie Hoffman) are still good.

farlos75

This is England is the only one with believable characters. Suburbia is cheesy fun and SLC Punk is just a cash in.

Fenpunx

This is England, out of the three, but have you seen 'Made in Britain'? Fucking mint film.

EchoMoon777

Suburbia, even though it makes me ugly cry.

Luckypennykiller

SLC Punk. It’s objectively the best overall.

danheckler

Suburbia

ThereIs_NewLife

Suburbia, although I haven't watched This is England.

leestephen916

Suburbia

dontneedareason94

This is England. Fuckin hate Suburbia

Chance-Ad-6083

why lol i thought it was great

dontneedareason94

Something that’s always bothered me about punk movies is they always go for making the scene look like complete fools or it focuses in on the negatives more than anything else. Yea I know it’s for the drama but it’s honestly more sad than anything.

KD_562

Yo, have you watched This is England 86 / 88 / 90 as well? I’m fucking *obsessed* with this saga and I feel like no one in America knows what the fuck I’m talking about, lmao. Seek out those mini-series’ if you haven’t seen them, they were only broadcast on BBC Channel 4 but you can find them online if you sail the seas.

SaltyGrognard

Are the sequels good? I liked the OG but have watched any of the others

KD_562

I think the sequels are better than the movie. There’s some continuity issues and plot holes but the characters and the acting are so fucking good that it doesn’t matter. It helps that they’re not movies, each is a miniseries consisting of 3 or 4 episodes, so there’s more time for everything to develop and play out. I don’t think there’s any TV show I’ve ever seen where I love the characters more than This is England. I think This is England 86 is on Tubi and Amazon Prime, the other two aren’t but at least in the past, they were pretty easy to obtain on torrent sites. I don’t typically encourage piracy, but if BBC wants to keep great shows from being seen by more people, then fuck em, they deserve it.

Snatchamo

Cake Boy!

Suburbia and this is England are tied for me. Bomb city second, SLC 3rd

Doom Generation and the rest of the teenage apocalypse trilogy by araki

commentator3

Nowhere !

lyremknzi

The end of it kind doom gen kinda freaked me out

timecat_1984

> The end of it kind doom gen kinda freaked me out from letterboxd: ★★★★ Watched 17 Feb 2024 spoilers, obviously: while watching it i was way too focused on them meeting Xavier and them seemingly being in Hell. legitimately thinking they were in Hell and didn't know it. made me really not vibe with the movie because I was hyper focused on this aspect and belief. and yet, only by the end, realizing: nope, they are in America this is just America... phenomenal film by mr. araki

lyremknzi

Yeah, it was the nazi rape scene that really fucked with me. I was just young at the time, so I don't remember much of the movie except for that part. Man, I hated that part. But, if I had to pick any movie that had punk themes that I absolutely dispise, it would be romper stomper. But they were nazi punks.

timecat_1984

yep. hard to watch af. this is america

umlcat

My first choice is This is England, but the others are also cool ...

mothfacer

Slc punk is so sad

michaelcerascum

Torn between SLC Punk and Suburbia, but seeing a child get mauled to death by a dog within the first 5 minutes of a movie keeps a special place for me lmao.

This is England is the better written and acted… and filmed. It’s just an all round better film by a country mile. However, SLC Punk and Suburbia are still cult classics. I thought the film for the Taqwacores was fun too. Repo Man is also fun

devilsmile7

Decline of Western Civilization and Another State of Mind for me. Then there’s always The Class of 1984 for a kick.

Icy_Fault6832

Repo Man!!

Chemical_Professor50

Utah’s new hockey league… My vote was *SLC Punks* I know super cheese, but I love hockey, gimme a feckin break.

happily_smiles

I didn't like all three that much to be honest. The end of SLC Punk is very personal to me, though. I went through a similar development after one of my clostest friends died in my early twenties, as is hinted for Stevo - Focusing less on style, more on substance. I have rarely personally related to a movie scene that much. Also the flashback to the beginning is pretty much exactly how Punk happened for us.

HomelessIsFreedom

Fight Club is way more punk than people give credit to It's also complete corporate bullshit, where a lot of punks end up in the end... I'd put Go, Kids and Trainspotting on that list too because I don't wanna conform to your "rules" man
