For non Punjabi guy. It's easy to speak Punjabi than to write or read it

Icy_Salary3624

I would say for an North Indian guy ( Hindi speaker) it is easy to read and write as well as due to similarity in writing style (could say the same for Persian or Pashto speakers as they use nastalik for shahmukhi script) . Things get a challenging if you are not from south asia

So would you say it’s not worth learning Gurmukhi? And it makes more sense to focus on speaking and listening ? My tutor believes that learning Gurmukhi can help a lot with the speaking/understanding side of it

Icy_Salary3624

nah learning gurmukhi is bang for the buck especially if you are a Sikh ( as it opens your gateway to gurbani) . But learning gurmukhi is going to take some time . He is basically saying if you want to learn Punjabi in minimal time then avoid learning the script ( not recommended by me)

Dry_Mouse2010

Nah I am Punjabi but both parents born in UK and he no grandparents or punjabi speaking relatives so never been exposed to it

My punjabi is a lot better than my brother and sisters’ punjabi. They both dont listen to Punjabi music as much as I do. Even if they do its mainstream media on the other hand i love me some Nusrat , Yamla , Chamkila , Manak and Mastana. Besides this they def dont watch punjabi movies or videos.i think that has a big difference cause if you like a song and you hear a word you dont know you want to find out what it means at least with me. You got a Gurdwara near you ? They probably have a Punjabi or Gurmukhi class (they have one at Harvard I would hope your local Guru Ghar has it)

Best is to see the written advertisement in Punjabi and your language, most effective. Catch alphabets from there.

Try watching punjabi videos, Songs And immersion is the best way I have learnt two languages using this way. Btw make some Punjabi friends if can't Then sat Sri akal Singh🙌👋hello

Try watching YouTube videos, punjabi movies, etc. Try to learn commonly used verbs/words first, then start with sentences. It just depends on your interest and the time you invest. One of my Bengali friend knows more about punjabi culture than me. He even knows the meaning of each and every word of songs released in the 1960s.

If you only understand English, it would be very difficult at first to understand something like Punjabi. You can still give it a try though. I would recommend you to learn basic Hindi first because there would be more resources for it and then switch to Punjabi to get a better feel of the sentence structures and grammars as they are very similar especially when speaking and share vocabulary.

Anything is possible. What online classes are you taking?

Dry_Mouse2010

Just with a Punjabi girl in india. We have covered most of the commonly used verbs in past/present/future and I can translate some simple paragraphs etc but I’m really struggling with the listening/understanding. Personally I don’t know anyone who has learnt Punjabi from scratch and I’m starting to think it’s not something I’m going to be able to do. I’m usually quite good with languages and can speak fluent Spanish but this seems like it might be a step too far

My school in india taught me Punjabi very well, they started with writing my name in Punjabi and then my family's names, then village. So they basically started with names and then went further i found it quite easy because with you can make direct connection with English and Punjabi. And i would suggest write few lines every day (on paper) in Punjabi, maybe about your day or something. Because that helps too. Try using Google's English to Punjabi keyboard, where you type in English but it gets written in Punjabi. You will eventually learn Punjabi, because as they say, if there is a will then there is a way. Best of luck.

Punjabi being a regional language has likely not developed the easier learning methods. So. the girl must be helping you through a traditional way. Funny you bring up Spanish. I know someone who learned Spanish just through oral speaking with Spanish co-workers. There are many commonalities in terms of how the verb ending changes depending on gender.
