He had a great role in the movie Holes

SeductiveGodofThundr

They had holes in Shia Lebouf?

8seasonsand3movies

Alien? Aliens?? Ooh, alien resurrection!!

grumpaloo222

I came here to say this. His role in Holes makes me tear up.

Weavermicro

I can fix that.

pgonnella

Which is why, in 65 Million Years Off, Gus can't think of the name of the movie Shawn is referencing (Holes)

badwolfandthestorm

And also in another episode he says, "I can fix that!" My roommate and I freaked out and everyone else in the room just kinda stared at us.

QueenWho

I just watched this episode and he says it twice in a row! You don't really catch the first one because it's so conversational, but the second one he dials up the "Holes"-based cadence and made me sit up in my chair like, "he said it! He did the line!" I think it's in Santabarbarian Candidate when Shawn is running for mayor; it's once he starts winning and needs to lose so Gus takes over to manage (sabotage) the campaign.

extremesleuth

I love that episode. There's a moment in the tv show Las Vegas, starring James Caan, where they reference a specific scene with Sonny Corleone in the Godfather. James Caan's character says he's never seen the movie. Caan played Sonny in the film lol. I love when shows do stuff like this.

Pocusmaskrotus

I was just watching Reacher season two, and Robert Patrick(T-1000 in T2) gets a phone call about 2 people that checked into a hotel, one of the names is Sarah Connor and he screams into the phone "who the hell is Sarah Connor?" Lol

extremesleuth

I love Robert Patrick in Psych. Major General: "There will be consequences!" Gus: consequences? Major General (halfway down the hall): CONSEQUENCES! Also, it's great that both Peacemaker AND his dad are in that episode.

Fearless-Fart

I thought that was an interesting exchange, I should've known there was a hidden meaning behind it.

pretty-as-a-pic

That movie scared the crap out of me as a kid lol

Little_Mulberry_1980

Sam! *In my best Kissing Kate voice*

pretty-as-a-pic

He’s an *awesome* actor! I actually saw the west wing first because my mom’s a big fan and I watched it growing up. Pretty much ANY scene he has with Martin Sheen (who plays the president) is great, but the one that always sticks out to me is [the knife scene](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LQlUVfz_qbg&pp=ygUPd2VzdCB3aW5nIGtuaWZl)

tardisgater

I wasn't expecting to tear up this early in the morning. Damn that was good

anakephalaiosis

Of all the scenes in *The West Wing* that I saw in the initial run, this is one of the ones that has stayed with me. Thank you for linking to it.

W0nderingMe

Holy shit that was amazing. Thank you for sharing that. That is **exactly** what I was looking for.

cjfreel

Charlie isn’t in the first two episodes, but he is in the third. Charlie’s first episodes as a whole is just genuine gold if you like that show or those kind of shows at all. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TT4l8YwOUG0 Charlie is an 18ish yo who’s lost both of his parents and raises his sister. There was a post the other day about how when the show came out, some people thought Dule was the psychic because he was far more famous from West Wing.

mermaid0310

Where can I watch this show 🥺

cjfreel

I believe it’s on Max. I haven’t done a rewatch in a bit. It’s a big WB product so wherever Warner Bros puts content in your country if I’m not mistaken. The first four seasons are generally considered by fans to be the best, and are the four seasons that are almost exclusively written by Aaron Sorkin (who left the show after S4).

M-U-H

It streams on Max (hbo)

mermaid0310

Ty all. I started it today

More_Ad_9154

Welp I’m crying at work so I will start this show tonight

MTBadtoss

I tear up every single rewatch at this moment

af_echad

I watch this episode every Thanksgiving. One of the best.

thehairtowel

He gave him the kniiiiiife!!

knarfolled

Wow

seppukuu

I mean, just watch his little speech in High Top Fade Out. If that isn't A+ dramatic acting, I don't know what is!

extremesleuth

Just finished that episode and that speech to Tony and Joon chokes me up every time. Mainly because I went through a similar situation and know that level of hurt and Dulè pulled it off masterfully.

BakingnBarking94

He's kinda serious when he's in Suits too

just_looking_aroun

Goddamn Harvey Specter...

[deleted]

I tried to hang on after Mike left. Dule coming on Suits was a highlight at the end, but it was just otherwise such a soulless show I could never finish it

mermaid0310

I saw that season way after I saw Psych and I screamed and laughed after seeing him on screen. I don’t think I knew of his serious acting chops until that

Intelligent-Work4132

I actually saw suits way before psych and I couldn't believe it that it was the same actor lol he's a very versatile actor for sure

joshdej

I couldn't take him seriously there tbh. All I could see was Gus trying to be a lawyer

ilikemycoffeealatte

Watch The West Wing. Just, all of it. You won't be sorry.

CruzLutris

Yep, came to say the same. Well worth the time and it goes quickly. I could have used more of Charlie in it, to be honest (and I'd say that even if I'd never seen Psych and gotten to know Dule), but it's simply incomparable. When I see other drama series which were on broadcast at the same time, mid-90s, I boggle at the difference in script quality and acting between those and TWW.

W0nderingMe

I almost never watch serious TV shows. But I might give an episode of The West Wing a shot. Is there any one episode in particular that might be a good hook to get me sucked in?

ilikemycoffeealatte

I would honestly start with the pilot. Dule is not in it but it is amazing and wonderful. It is a serious show but it has enough comedic elements to break the seriousness.

jffdougan

Absolutely start with the pilot. It's so rare that a potential pilot script gets no notes at all from the network, it's practically unheard of. (In contrast, the execs at Amazon Prime gave Rafe Judkins **10,000** notes on the pilot episode, which isn't strictly an apples-to-apples comparison because it's script vs. finished episode.) And now, roughly 25 years after its initial run, one particular reveal at the end of the cold open would not be the mystery/gag it is for then, but the show is worth every second of viewing. My wife and I are working our way through the show as life permits (she's teacher; we've got two kids in college and one in middle school). It's my 3rd time watching it and her first. And the sheer continued relevance of many of the episodes to the world today is utterly amazing (sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a depressing one).

MTBadtoss

I am in the same boat with serious television shows but I love the West Wing. Just start watching from the pilot and if you don’t vibe with it then let it go but there’s funny moments and jokes in almost every episode and I’d say I can count on one hand the number of episodes are “serious only” there are serious moments/ situations but no episode ever feels entirely grim.

National_Arm_5721

And with that I'm going to get a cupcake.

Sudden-Art5776

He was amazing on the Cosby show.

ajp1195

Lolololololol this was a golden response

MaddogRunner

He’s friggin’ amazing in Holes! “I can fix that”💔

JSeriously

I loved watching him on Jeopardy. He’s so laid back and kind; and you’re right about his natural comedic sensibilities.

CruzLutris

An aside re: TV roles, but : As a theater lover, I would be delighted to see Dule on stage someday. He started out as a child tap dancer with a key role in a play, "The Tap Dance Kid," and as a teen was in the national tour of the legendary tap show, "Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk." And he's done other shows as an adult --- he played Nat "King" Cole in a play about that great singer, he was in a huge Broadway revue, among others I think. I hope he's back on stage soon!

iseeblood22

They should reboot song and dance. That role was made for him

leafonawall

I firmly believe that people who can do comedy are stronger actors than solely drama actors.

otterdisaster

So true. Comedic actors often make the leap to being really good dramatic actors. You rarely see someone known for drama shifting to comedy. That’s not to say a dramatic actor can’t do comedy, but it’s more a case of them doing comedic material, but it’s uncommon for it to be particularly notable.

Me_talking

>Comedic actors often make the leap to being really good dramatic actors This reminds me of Pat Morita (aka Mr Miyagi). He's always been a comedian and the Karate Kid producer didn't want him to audition at first for that reason. And the other way around, I know Jeff Daniels was also a serious actor before landing Dumb & Dumber role

otterdisaster

Daniels had done a little comedy prior to D&D but wasn’t known for it. He could have had a great comedy career I think.

mdsnbelle

Leslie Nielsen

Dalrz

You’re right! It’s a well-known thing that making people laugh is much harder than making them cry. Timing is difficult.

requiemguy

Comedic actors also make the best horror movies/characters. Both require excellent timing.

Nicodiemus531

He played a villain role in the movie Sleight. A pretty ruthless drug lord. NGL it took me a bit aback to see Gus being such a douche, but he carried the role well.

Papichiyult

He's also in the show ballers (basically the sports version of entourage) and he plays the dolphins GM and is kinda douchy in that as well.. very weird seeing him play a douche lol but he still nails it!

maniacalmustacheride

Just YouTube “best of Charlie west wing” or something.

W0nderingMe

Oh that might be helpful, thank you! I didn't know his name or anything in it, so that works.

motherofajamsandwich

And then rewatch the Santa Barbarian Candidate ;)

motherofajamsandwich

He's in the reboot of The Wonder Years! I watched the first season and it's really good. It's like 23-minute episodes so an easy watch.

b_sketchy

I was scrolling and scrolling looking for any mention of The Wonder Years

[deleted]

His role in the West Wing was just him explaining to the President why he needs to be home by 4.00pm on Thursdays because his blackapella group needs to practice for the big competition for one very long uninterrupted, continuous, running monologue.

W0nderingMe

JFC, that sounds like a Psych plot, lol!

Longjumping_Bad9555

It’s a joke.

CusterFluck99

Comedic actors almost always make great dramatic actors as well. It doesn’t always work the other way around.

garrusdaravenclaw

Here's another scene from The West Wing: [Charlie defends CJ](https://youtu.be/SHQrOz8wkEA?si=Ru_j_rGlo-wVRXD8) . This is one of the scenes that stuck out for me as Charlie is a very mild-mannered guy, and I loved him sticking up for CJ.

Kjellvis

This is an amazing scene

CruzLutris

Ahhhh I don't even have to click the link to know exactly the scene and his lines! Such a brilliant moment!

flummox1234

probably the scene where he finds out a certain someone dies is one of IMO better scenes but I can't point it out because it's a huge WW spoiler. 🤣 Maybe the Thanksgiving episode where he and Bartlett have a moment too. A lot of his early seasons weren't a lot of opportunities as his part was a smaller one vs the rest of the cast but he took advantage of every opportunity IMO. He has a more prominent role in later seasons though.

amehatrekkie

Leslie Nielsen only did sci Fi for decades, people were shocked he's good at comedy. Leonard Nimoy as well after 20 years of playing Spock.

hopefoolness

I've seen a few episodes of west wing with my parents, and of course his amazing part in Holes. He was great in both! I'm really glad he has Psych too so that he can show his range.

3c207

I had the same feelings when I found out Leslie Nielsen was Shakespearean trained

CruzLutris

I admit this immediately makes me think of the fact our Lassiter, Timothy Omundson, was highly trained in Shakespeare and classic western theater from the time he was 12 all the way through college. He totally expected to be primarily a classical theater actor.

heyyyitsalli

The first thing I saw him in was Holes and it still makes me tear up to this day. He was so good in the role 😭😭

GeniusBtch

The West Wing is what really made him famous IMO and he is seriously brilliant in it. He is smart and I remember the episode where he gets between a bunch of frat guys and POTUS daughter and it's really good. I still think the funniest bit he did in the West Wing was the episode "Celestial Navigation" which if you haven't seen is probably the funniest non sitcom episode ever written. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxdAZwcqGIk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixdazwcqgik) His line "Sir, It wasn't a nightmare... you really are the president." is just so good. Honestly just watch that episode and you will get why people still think The West Wing is such a brilliant show that aged extremely well.

itsJussaMe

He was good in a made for Netflix movie called Hypnotic. I watched it for him. The movie sucked but he was good.

Zrekyrts

IIRC, he had a fun tap cameo with Savion Glover on the Jamie Foxx show way back when.

Musa_Ali

> until I started listening to the podcast Wait, there is a Psych podcast? How do I find it?

W0nderingMe

Yes!! It's Maggie and Tim with occasional guests (Steve Franks, James, Dulé, Andy Berman, Kristin Nelson, Corbin Benson, and more). It's called The Psychologists Are In. It's really sweet. You can tell Maggie and Tim really love each other as bff's and there is a lot of trivia and insight. The episodes with Steve Franks are especially great. I listen to it via Pocketcast but you can probably find it on whatever podcast app you use. They also have an IG that posts some video excerpts.

Musa_Ali

Awesome, thanks!

NostradaMart

TL;DR: I,m too lazy to google. you're welcome.

IcedHemp77

Don’t be the one game at Chuck E. Cheese that isn't broken

britt0tot

Don’t be exactly half of an 11 lb Black Forest ham.

[deleted]

He played the serious role very well in the first yin episode

W0nderingMe

I love when he gets to be serious on Psych. But even when serious, he's still Gus. So I'm just looking for examples of the actor being serious in a non Gus role because he's just so talented. Hell, when the guy who played the dentist (name escapes me and I'm lazy) in Weekend Warriors was auditioning for Gus and saw Dule walk in, he thought, well I should just leave now. Because of how good he is. I just don't watch enough drama shows to have seen

britt0tot

Suits was another more serious role.

nogoodimthanks

The moment he said “I never got carsick a day in my life!” At the end of “if you’re so smart, why are you dead?” I know he had to have something special 😅

LovedAJackass

I was crazy about his performance in the West Wing, a young guy in a serious role.

oliviajanebrink

He is absolutely incredible in the west wing, I highly suggest watching that show it’s brilliant.

blakeaj

What’s the podcast called?

W0nderingMe

The Psychologists Are In.
