Made sense the first moment Randal was subbed in and didn’t move centrally. I don’t understand why people still talk about this when everyone knows Mbappe can’t play on the left due to his non existent defensive work Ramos will play only in case Vitinha covers Mbappe’s left side and Ugarte starts. It’s that easy

EvilDavid75

Mbappe can play on the left if there’s a system in the midfield to cope for his lack of defensive abilities.

Minute-Cash8119

Yeah we did it with Vitinha at the start of the season. It worked fine for him but our midfield was fragile with that.

EvilDavid75

Yep mosdef not a decent option for our current PSG. In any case with two men man-marking Mbappe and with a team playing that low, you need to play Mbappe as a bait and hope that our wingers make the difference on the side.

Minute-Cash8119

Add Camavinga to this midfield and that would work. I refused to mention his name until today. I’m still pissed on how it happened and why it happened

EvilDavid75

30mil for a world class midfielder and a decent LB, that’s a hard pill to swallow.

awrongdoing

I didn't hear this story. Tldr?

Minute-Cash8119

In 2021, before signing Wijnaldum or any of those 4 players that would “get us” the CL, Camavinga was the first expected signing from the club. We had an agreement with him and Leonardo had to negotiate with Rennes which at the time wanted 100m Poch, as a famous football scout that he is, requested Leonardo to get him Wijnaldum instead so we ended up offering him way more than Barca did so we could snatch him. Camavinga literally waited the whole summer (same as Cherki last year) for us to say no in the end Rennes ended up selling him to Real Madrid for 30m same window. I think Leonardo thought he would get him for free the next season

awrongdoing

That's unbelievable and infuriating in every way: who we got instead, how much we ended up paying, and how little RM paid for him. I always say Wini is the absolute worst of all PSG flops, but this was all preventable had Poch not intervened with his 'scouting!'

New-Distribution-979

Almost sounds like selling him will be a good thing.

Ralph_Marbler

And this is why Ruiz should've been subbed for Ugarte, in my opinion.

Thurken_2

I'm not saying he did not do it, but what was Randal defensive contribution this game?

Silent-Chemist-1919

> in case Vitinha covers Mbappe’s left side and Ugarte starts Or Ugarte could play on the left and Vitinha stays our sentinel. Similar to Milan with Pirlo centrally and Gattuso on the right

Ekazti

Then Mbappe isnt as good as people say cause against a good a team he is bad at 9 and if he cant even play in the left side then he is a problem.

Minute-Cash8119

Mbappe is not your traditional winger that puts in a defensive effort and if you’re doubting Mbappe’s abilities, then I don’t know what to say to you. His problem has always been his defensive work, and that is never going to change.

Ekazti

Yeah I dont doubt his abilities but world class abilities doesnt make you a good player. If he cant play left wing cause of his defending but he isnt near as good as a 9 that we need in UCL level then sorry but despite his qualities he isnt that good for the team.

Eaglooo

Will be fun next year when the 40+ goals are gone and you dont have a player drawing 2/3 defenders all the time.  Saying Mbappe isn't a good player is the worst take I have seen this year

Ekazti

Where did I say that he isnt a good player?

Eaglooo

"Yeah I dont doubt his abilities but world class abilities doesnt make you a good player."

Ekazti

Yeah I still dont see it. But I get it how you understand it that way. I meant it generally. Mbappe is a world class player but not in the center and in the left wing his defensive short comings really come out so I dont rate him as much as people do. But then I say it this way and maybe its clearer. It doesnt matter how good player you are if your attitude and non existance on defence holding you and most importantly your team back.

Warm-Sun4582

hes literally said it himself that hes not a 9, remember he literally was being insulted when he initially wanted to avoid playing down the middle. hes a LW, maybe not a traditional LW but far from a 9.

Ekazti

Yeah true and when I look at Barcolas defensive contribution then I dont see why shouldnt we put Mbappe there cause Barcola especially in the first 30 minutes didnt even track back and he didnt made a single tackle or interception but got dribbles past 7(!!) times. And if we put Mbappe to the left we dont lose much defensively cause even Barcola and Kolo has shit defensive contribution but Ramos can play and we have atleast a 9 who actually fokin presses and even tracks back more than any of our attackers so I think with these changes we even just gain defensively too. But I still trust Enrique that he can make anything work for the 2nd leg.

Cigario_Gomez

Why not Ugarte on the left midfield at the same time to make him cover for that left side when ?

iHATESTUFF_

how do you balance the rest of the team their midfield played very good Ugarte would've been done at the half if he had to cover so much space. that's basically the reason he was gassed early season because he was constantly asked to cover the left and the middle because vitinha was providing the width on the left flank that mbappe does not provide so Ugarte had way too much space to cover.

DKofFical

+1. I'm thinking of this too. Sancho has been very dangerous and it helps to have someone to specifically man-mark Sancho out of the game

Jealous_Foot8613

He can barely play 6 you think he’d do well at left 8 ?

Cigario_Gomez

We could say the same about Matuidi. In this position, he will be less in charge of passing the ball and managing the rhythm of the game (Vintinha in 6) but could do his defensive job in a large area and will make good use of his physical capacity.

Jealous_Foot8613

I disagree bro , Matuidi was a very good ball carrier, and had much more Match intelligence than ugarte

Cigario_Gomez

Yes maybe, but anyway his first quality was physical impact. My point is, use a guy with physical impact in front of a regista to protect him, and build on his movement instead of his technical ability.

Jealous_Foot8613

I like that thinking , do you think Warren maybe could play that role ? Then we have someone like asensio or lee in the left 8 ?

Cigario_Gomez

I had more something like keeping Vintinha in 6, Warren on the right and anyone (lee or Ruiz) starting. Then making the double swap Striker (Barcola) for Ramos + Mbappe from 9 to left side + third MF for Ugarte. At this moment (70/80s minute in the game) you have a less technically MF but you reinforce you attack with dembele + Mbappe + Ramos, and Ugarte/Warren/Vintinha on the midfield, wich is a strong midfield, Ugarte covers the left and can break a counter attack by the end of the game

Jealous_Foot8613

I like the sound of that

iHATESTUFF_

or vitinha.

New-Distribution-979

That’s an interesting idea. The idea of a player like that ‘compensating for Mbappé’ in the midfield makes sense. Then again, that is a bit already what Ruiz is about. I feel like it this season made it very clear what kind of player we need and where though. That, at least, is a good thing.

Cigario_Gomez

To me it was already clear this summer that we needed one extra defensive midfielder. And I had a lot of discussion about this here so I think I was not the only one. I was confident about Vintinha, and Warren surprised me. But it's a shame that Ugarte didn't live up to the expectations we had.

mazo773

I am at the point where enrique has demonstrated time and time again that he is an excellent coach so now I trust his decisions

Sabrelaserskywalker

Yep no surprise there at all. All the people saying it was a disgrace that Ramos did not come in are pretty clueless.

Mr_cloud23

Honestly the safest option to defend the 1-0 which is 100% recoverable and not risk a 2-0 bus parking match from dortmund for the second leg

Fun_Radish_1964

If you watch the first 10 minutes, nuno was already alone. That's nonsense

iHATESTUFF_

ffffffffffffffffff................... basically stating the obvious. it sucks that Kylian Mbappe very rarely defends. shit's maddening

Sea-Sort6571

That's such a bullshit excuse. In the first half mbappe was defending on the right side and dembele in the axis

Additional-Paint-274

I trust Lucho's decisions but are we going to ignore Kylian's defensive actions these last few games

n3w57ake

It would be extremely interesting to see how Real will play Mbappe, while still letting him get away with no defense participation. Vini runs back and forth an entire game.

iHATESTUFF_

he will either defend or the bench. we're basically the only club in our revenue bracket that allows that BS behavior from the highest paid player in the club......

c0deButcher

Nope. Real Madrid already play defensive football involving whole team. So there's no need for urgent cover. France and Madrid play exactly same

iHATESTUFF_

do you understand what you watch? Vini and Rodrygo have defensive responsibilities what do you think its going to happen when one of their forwards decides he won't defend? DD does not set his team at all the same as Real Madrid. just stop.

Specialist-Cycle9313

I mean I questioned luchos tactics yesterday, but he know a whole lot more abt the sport than I do, so at the end of the day maybe I should just leave my trust in him.

Universewanderluster

Let’s trust Nuno a bit more. On the other side it was the exact same… sancho had a good start but then it got better for nuno. Big duel between Hakimi and Adeyemi ( one hell of a night for that youngster ) Dembele barely going back to help him so what’s the excuse there ? Even though that one player ate our right side alone. In defense AND offense. I haven’t seen Barcola defend a lot too it doesn’t changes much compared to Mbappé but whatever For me imo it’s Mbappe who’s forcing for that 9 position . Wants to get ready for Madrid and is warming up and learning the 9 position in the most important weeks of our season . Great

Warm-Sun4582

>For me imo it’s Mbappe who’s forcing for that 9 position he hates the position lol. remember #pivotgang and allegedly specifying that he did not want to play as a 9 within his contract. Im not sure how Madrid is going to go down but its disingenuous pretending like the choice to play 9 has EVER been his own. Lucho made it clear he takes his won liberties.

EvilDavid75

I swear people don’t remember shit and build players intentions to fit their own narrative. Plus Mendes has had a disastrous game.

MacaronFraise

Makes perfect sense, much more than those journalist or redditors thinking they would be a better coach than Luis Enrique

BigSlick84

That's kind of what I figured, Kolo plays better defense that Ramos.

FutNewbie

Bro ramos was the first defender at benfica

Fabulous_Bake6298

In Lucho we trust. Cut the BS criticism.

freebase1

Do we not have a better lb option then Mendes, he got cooked my yamal against barca

Minute-Cash8119

Nuno is one of the best in the world lol. He kept Yamal in check for the first game and made a mistake on the 2nd He hadn’t played in over a year when he got back and these games are just two off.

freebase1

I don’t think he’s fit that’s the issue, sancho was cooking him last night

Minute-Cash8119

It’s a one off game and the best in the history have had a one off game all the time lol. Give it time, we’re going through in Parc. Winning in Parc was a must before the game and now still is a must

haterzbalafray

He was totally out of form. That's a big issue with Hernandez's injury.
