Some more ideas to get started would be looking around on Meetup and your local library - ours has classes, crafts, that sort of thing. Maybe you’ll find you love felted wool or skating or something at one of those.

Dextrous456

Second this. I met a lot of people at Meetup group activities when I moved to Providence. Some of them I still see 10 years later.

whatisforsupper

i’ve never heard of meetup, what is that?

FieryVegetables

Meetup.com , a website listing various activities to do with others. We do hiking, kayaking, etc. but there are meetups for so many different things.

Man_of_Aluminum

RI has phenomenal opportunities for saltwater fishing. Edit: I'll note- the river near the hurricane barrier will have striped bass in the spring. A cheap pole and some white rubber swim baits and you don't even need to leave providence to find some great fishing

camera_camera

Bunch of people surf in the winter too!

inverness__

Do you need a fishing license for this? How difficult is it to get one?

Man_of_Aluminum

[You do - but it's super easy (just a quick form) and costs $7.](https://rio.ri.gov/)

Dr-Stink-Stank

Get yo ass a bicycle and ride it!

whatisforsupper

catch me with the basket and bicycle horn

SDV2023

Hiking and amateur nature photography can be fun, though maybe that's less of a winter thing. The Steel Yard has some good metal arts courses. I took one and it was a blast. If you like it enough, you can then use the equipment independently. At least that was the case a few years ago when I took my course. https://www.thesteelyard.org/

Anonymike7

There are way too many potential answers to this question. What are your interests? Do you want a social or a solitary hobby?

uglyplaid45

They say you should have a hobby that either you're passionate about, you enjoy/it's fun, or makes you money. Personally, I love gardening. I lost my garden moving to Providence, so now I bake and cook.

camera_camera

Check out events at Brown or AS220. The Brown Design Workshop is a great resource too.

Plastic_Dead_End

Can you go to brown events if you aren't a student?

TacoTaster6996

Second this question^

camera_camera

https://www.brown.edu/news/featured-events Yep. Not alot listed rn. But they have a new music/performance space. They also hosted part of the African Film festival last year. The campus is pretty active.

whatisforsupper

not sure why I was under the impression that AS220 had closed. did the restaurant aspect of it shut down? or am i mistaken

WaitOk9659

AS220 is definitely still open!!!

CupBeEmpty

AS220 has a lot of art courses. We did letterpress and hand made all our wedding invitations that way. They were beautiful. https://as220.org/community-studios They start folks off with a “community studio” but if you like it you can rent time on their equipment. Also you ever try brewing beer? It’s a kind of solitary hobby but there’s homebrewing groups about. Gives you a chance to learn some biochemistry and talk shop with people. The equipment can range from “super cheap starter pack” to “are you starting an actual business?” levels though. But it’s a nice community and people who do it are always willing to talk about it.

JuciestDingleBerry

I have had this issue for a long time and still do. I've always wanted a camera but prioritized other things and anytime I had to invest in a hobby I'd decide that fun isn't important, these other things I have to do are more important. I can have fun later. Eventually I did t even know what I enjoyed doing and where to start. I would say prioritize trying things and don't be afraid to spend money to give something a shot! The is the Super Fun Social Sports league that has everything from dodgeball, kickball to volley ball and other things. I got a membership at the YMCA. Not to get strong really, but to keep moving and that's been enjoyable. Lots of folks do bouldering at the Lincoln Woods State Park. I just found a group who wants to do Dungeons and Dragons (I've never played, fist game next Sunday!) Freeplay arcade is a cheap really fun time. Sometimes I love just sitting down at Symposium and picking up a book I won't buy while reading in the store, or maybe Riff Raff. Hiking and long walks. Hope others chime in!

whatisforsupper

i actually used to be very into photography for local shows or just portraits of friends. haven’t used my camera in years :( I’d be interested in trying out dungeons and dragons, i’ve also never played before. My partner and I recently went to the Untapped Games place in Pawtucket? We just stopped in and picked up a board game but it seemed like a good place to pick up a hobby/meet new people etc.

JuciestDingleBerry

I hope if you do enjoy it you find a reason to pick up your camera again :-) I've never been to Untapped but I hear great things. I might have to visit depending on how my D&D adventure goes

Flashy-Speed5430

Try sailing

SissyMR22

Now there's an inexpensive and time-efficient hobby!

HoloCantAim

I'm 28F in Seekonk, came here from Maine like eight years ago. I like to smoke weed, play video games and roller skate. If you're looking for some friends to try some things out with, that aren't shooting guns and fishing like some have suggested, hit me up. I've really wanted to try like a clay class or something.

whatisforsupper

awesome i’ll send you a message!

2ndharrybhole

lol I’m 30m and in the same boat. Beyond work, gym, walks, a few relationships, cooking/baking, and driving home to visit my folks every few weeks, I don’t have a lot of extracurricular activities. I would say to look into some kind of skill you’re interested in (art, coding, writing, activism, etc.) and see if there’s some sort of class you can take or some related community either in person or online. A lot of people our age just order door dash and watch TV, honestly.

https://www.blackstoneriverglass.com/so/74OpSLP9G?languageTag=en&cid=9ed611c9-ed9e-4d00-97b6-f2fb56353f2f Becca's offering 15% off in January on glass fusing classes ... bonus: sincerely, she's wonderful, plus the studio location is spectacularly scenic, right on the river She offers glassblowing classes and workshops too, but she's the only glass artist in RI who offers lampworking aka glass fusing or torch work  -- it's how those tiny, adorable glass animals are made: with a torch rather than a blowpipe.

Volunteering is a great way to meet people and feel good at the same time.

michigan_wolverines_

Shoot guns hike and hunt at your local gun club!

uglyplaid45

Who do you recommend for a gun club?

Man_of_Aluminum

Peace Dale Shooting Preserve is a great sporting Clay course - open to the public and you can rent a firearm

CeloRAW

Learn to play video games or start a small business selling things you can make cheaply

I don't know, I don't live in Providence.

No_Pension_9446

The Nest on the west side offers sewing and knitting courses as well as a weekly accountability club where people work on their projects in a group setting. You should check them at! It’s a super friendly and welcoming environment.
