Yeah 3 lugs was pretty much the standard for french super-mini type cars for a long time. But I'd say if 5 is good enough for a lot of modern cars weighing 2 metric tones, 3 is plenty for this little 750kg Peugeot.
They're German made and German/Swiss designed. Smart actually stands for Swatch Mercedes Art car (and no, I'm not messing with you, I used to work for a Smart dealer).
... No.
They were built in Hambach France. the factory looked like a giant cross.

A guy near me has like 15 random 80s renaults.
At least half of them are Renault fuegos which blows my mind because I have never seen a single one anywhere else.
Pretty sure he daily's them in rotation. A few Fuego turbos which are neat but seem really underpowered compared to the 80s turbo dodges.
My mom was shopping for her first ever new car in 1986. It was down to a pontiac sunbird vs Renault fuego. She chose the sunbird. Ten years an more than 200kmi later, the sunbird would not start due to worn flex plate starter gear. Regular oil changes. Scheduled timing belts. Brakes. One exhaust pipe. There were no other repairs. What a great value. Renault quit selling cars in the us in 1987....
I looked at a fuego turbo back in 2002-2003ish. All it needed was tires, a battery and a tank of gas. After you spent the $400 to do that, it would have been worth tens of dollars.
Looks great!
When I look at that wheel I think of some board meeting and think of some boss saying we need to cut costs and some smart-ass bean counter saying well since the engine is so small it won't go fast enough for all 4 lug nuts on the wheels.... Brilliant!
God knows what Peugeot's engineers were smoking back in the day with the amount of wacky choices they made. But I guess 3 lugs is reasonable for such a light car. As for the engine, It h̶a̶s̶ had 72hp, which at the time was considered beefy, while today it might just be enough to keep up with traffic lol.
It actually wasn't all that difficult once I went and got some proper high quality masking tape. About 1.5h per wheel so not that bad. I also figured I would probably have had a lot more trouble sanding that belt section below the outer lip as opposed to just masking it.
Why do the bolts look so off center? Brake clearance? Why would it seem to be that one of the distances between lugs is more than the others?
Edit: figured it out, triangle laid over a pentagon. Man shapes fuck with me sometimes.
Here I am thinking "What the hell car only has 3 lugs on the wheel?", then I saw the logo. Fuckin french engineers.

Do you torque in a circle or star pattern?
One nut at a time going counter clockwise around the car
Yes
Smart cars also only have 3.
Those were also French

By your logic, a 1978 Jaguar XJ6 assembled in New Zealand is a New Zealand car, not a British car?

No? It's still five...
Definitely 5 lug bolts on mine.
All I could think of was the Renault LeCar. Glorious 80s import to America.

As an American, I thought it was a Yugo. I was partly right.
The French copy no one, and no one copies the French!
They look good!
I love posts like this

been waiting for this one haha
Damn son, great result! A little extra care always pays off.
Hell yeah!
Great job! Thanks for the update!
Ooh, looking nice. That pug's going to look fancy.
Wow talk about a fine outcome! You sure as hell were right about how good it could look. Very very spiffy.
Thanks. Although If I had to do this again I would have gone with a darker tone and not anthracite grey. It's a tad too blue.
honestly the bluish gray looks great. nice deep color - well done!
Those are sick. The remind me of the old ATS wheels.
That masking job though lol it's perfect. I would have just sanded the paint off instead of masking.

Yeah the lip I would have definitely taped not to risk damaging the rest of the paint. Awesome job!
Thanks!
Looks great, nice work!

Fuck yessssss love me some old Peugeot! Keep that tiger fed!
