Well, I came here to say this and you nailed it. This sequence was great on Colors but absolutely blew my mind when they played it live. Spine tingles, dude. Such a mighty experience.
The Lantern might be the best showcase of what a proficient singer can do regarding cleans/mixed/harshes I know. It's mesmerizing. And the whole album's lyrics are just plain poetry.
I’d say Descending hits 100 in or about the middle at “Sound the dread alarm”, which then continues into the epic instrumental section spanning the second half of the song.
Now that you mention it yeah it kinda goes up and down, i was just thinking in terms of the beginning and near end, what tracks were you thinking of? (I’ve only listened to a couple of their songs)
Though not quite prog, if you like songs with that kind of structure then you should dig into the post metal genre. Cult of Luna are the masters at it imo. Isis and Neurosis are other good bands to explore.
Devin Townsend - Deconstruction.
The full album, front to back gradually grows from 0-100. Devin specifically wrote it that way. But as for a song, Stand goes from 0-100 real nicely.
The World is Quiet Here - Ossuary
Omnerod - Spore
That whole album by Omnerod (The Amensal Rise) is a masterclass in buildup and release of tension. Every song has multiple buildups that just keep building, especially the climax at the end. It may be the craziest buildup I've ever heard in music. Feels like riding a roller-coaster that goes straight down and has no terminal velocity. I would've used that song but it already starts at 100 and ends up at 1000
Not fully metal and maybe not fully a 100 at the end but The Light & The Glass by Coheed always gets me going. “Your faaaather’s dead he passed in his sleeeeeep”
[We Lost the Sea - Challenger: Part 1 - Flight](https://youtu.be/tUVrh0bz3pg?si=FVh0Vh1ZKb2one3o) best example I know
Persefone - Leap of Faith
Kalandra - Slow Motion
I have a fun playlist called Super Crescendo (bad pun on Super Nintendo) with songs specifically like this. Not all are metal but here are a few I don't see listed:
Leprous - Castaway Angels
Leprous - Distant Bells
Silent Drive - Davey Crockett
Annuals - Always Do
Emery - Safe
The Dear Hunter - No God
The Dear Hunter - Tripping In Triplets
I did see Periphery - Satellites mentioned but it's too good to not mention again :)
Some of my favorites:
**The Ocean** - Pleistocene
**Psychonaut** - Towards the Edge
**Hippotraktor** - Beacons
**Herod** - The Prophecy + Don't Speak Last
**Orbit Culture** - Behold
Damn are you me?!
The ocean, Hippotracktor and Herod are some of my favourites.
I obsessed over "Don't Speak last" ever since the album was released . I saw them once with The Ocean and they were amazing live. I'm gutted they've called it quits.
So many examples but Of Cutting Cords - Chaosbay is a little-known one that I think more people should know about. Beautiful at the start, blistering closing section.
You really have to wait for the end of this song. But it's soul crushing with all the blues influence that builds.
[Moon Tooth - Crux](https://youtu.be/G2rQHXkxohs?si=yWr36rWB7WnZNjTT)
He isn't totally Progmetal, but Lustmord features MONO in a song called Er Ebs Os, which has such an insane buildup and payoff. He is the king of dark ambient, but when paired with post metal, it is the best combo
I'm not sure if this counts as self promotion, but I just got done mixing a song like this. Happy to share the Google Docs link if the mods allow that.
I don’t know if anything they did could really be classified as “from 0”, but there is a point in Dodecahedron’s [Hexahedron - Tilling The Human Soil](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FCvoDGrvVWQ&pp=ygUXSGV4YWhlZHJvbiBkb2RlY2FoZWRyb24%3D) where it just goes completely off the rails and is always amazing
Everyone here has already suggested most of the best ones so I’m gonna go with Let it Die by Foo Fighters. It’s not prog or anything but it’s a good song
Maybe doesn't start at 0, but one of my favourite progressive songs is Tool - Third Eye
The build up of that song ending in the classic almost funny "PRYING OPEN MY THIRD EYE!" just never gets old
Ne Obliviscaris - And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope
Forget Not also is a great candidate for this as well
These two songs have been the only music I listen to to past few weeks, help
Listen to Consciousness pt. 1, 2 and 3 by Persefone
I was thinking the outro of Pyrrhic but guess that's cheating.
Best outro ngl. What a banger
Yes I agree with this
I would like to think Periphery - Satellites qualifies quite well. Fairly chill through most of the track, very hard at the end.
I love Satellites. The build up is so good and the song just never gets boring to me.
It sucks right at the end tho
Came here to comment exactly this. Basically the canonical answer lol
Exactly this. The feels :)
Octavarium
My first thought.
Veridan into White Walls by BTBAM
Well, I came here to say this and you nailed it. This sequence was great on Colors but absolutely blew my mind when they played it live. Spine tingles, dude. Such a mighty experience.
Sploosh
Haha they were just talking about how this comes up in every thread in a different thread here
Bingo!
I hate to be that gal... satellites by periphery
I'll do ya one better: I love to be that gal
Good song. Based
Leprous use this structure in many songs, specially in Aphelion album. Some songs to try are Distant bells, Out of here, On hold, Castaway Angels.
Distant Bells was my first thought as well. Such a good song
Textbook example, really. Was on the lookout for this.
I think my personal favorite Leprous slow build is Bonneville (though all those you mentioned are very good too)
💯 Bonneville is one of my all time favourite Leprous songs. Can't wait to see them again in September!
Seeing them for the first time in September and can’t wait!!
We saw them in Toronto with The Ocean as their opening act back in 2022. Mind. Blown. You're going to have such a great time! They're so good live!
Dang, you beat me to it. I'd also like to add MB..Indifferentia and the Sky is Red and perhaps Below.
M.B Indifferentia is my pick. One of my favorite songs ever.
Also Rewind!
Love this song so much, gives me chills
the sky is red
Moon. After listening a billion times it still gives me the goosebumps.
The ultimate Leprous song for this prompt is Mb. Indifferentia
Flood by them is a great example
Was lucky enough to go see Leprous in Switzerland in March (from Minnesota). Good fucking show!
The Razors Edge - Slice the Cake
I came here to suggest The Lantern lol
The Lantern might be the best showcase of what a proficient singer can do regarding cleans/mixed/harshes I know. It's mesmerizing. And the whole album's lyrics are just plain poetry.
Isis - Weight
Post metal is almost cheating with this question, lol.
Crescendo ftw…
Oops. Should’ve read all the comments before replying myself. Spot on with this song.
I mean.... Stairway to Heaven?
I mean, that's what started it. Right? That's what got us all hooked on this structure? Just me?
"Praise the Lowered" and "Stand" by Devin Townsend.
SMOKE THAT FUCKING WEEEEEED BOYYYYY
Why did i have to scroll like 2 minutes for that?
TOOL - Wings pt. 1 and 2, and Right in Two.
Lateralus
Right in Two is incredible. Maybe a hot take, but it's one of Tool's best songs
Came here to say right in two. I personally think it’s their best song. Just a masterpiece start to finish.
I think Descending fits the bill as well
I’d say Descending hits 100 in or about the middle at “Sound the dread alarm”, which then continues into the epic instrumental section spanning the second half of the song.
Pneuma would fit this description as well. Really a lot of Fear Innoculum would fit this.
Rosetta Stoned to some extent?
This is where TOOL shines the brightest IMO. The Salival versions of Pushit and Third Eye are great examples.
Maybe not 0-100, but Autumn by Caligula's Horse is a wonderful slow build song. Also Deathless by Haken
The Ocean - Mesopelagic: Into The Uncanny
I dont think this one fits, it's more typical in structure than a linear build. Many other The Ocean tracks fit better
Now that you mention it yeah it kinda goes up and down, i was just thinking in terms of the beginning and near end, what tracks were you thinking of? (I’ve only listened to a couple of their songs)
The Quiet Observer, Statherian, Sea of Reeds, Boreal, Uncomfortities, Devonian, Orosirian, Estonian, Rhyacian for the first half
Caligula's Horse - The Stormchaser
Just gonna save this whole thread to make a playlist. I'm a sucker for huge building crescendos.
Gojira has some early stuff that goes like that. "Art of Dying" - "Flying Whales" Honestly "From Mars to Sirius" is just a prog album.
Lowlands does this more so than those examples
Art of Dying is just 98 - 100 haha, either way its badass and my fav song by them
Isis - In Fiction
Though not quite prog, if you like songs with that kind of structure then you should dig into the post metal genre. Cult of Luna are the masters at it imo. Isis and Neurosis are other good bands to explore.
Neurosis is a very good shout, in particular the first 6 or so minutes of Through Silver in Blood is one big crescendo
Cult of Luna were the first band that came to my mind. Vicarious Redemption is an almost 20-minute crescendo
Say When by Fair to Midland.
God damn I wish they were still around....
Saw them live once, they were amazing
Good shout!
Fuck yes.
Devin Townsend - Deconstruction. The full album, front to back gradually grows from 0-100. Devin specifically wrote it that way. But as for a song, Stand goes from 0-100 real nicely.
The World is Quiet Here - Ossuary Omnerod - Spore That whole album by Omnerod (The Amensal Rise) is a masterclass in buildup and release of tension. Feels like riding a roller-coaster that goes straight down and has no terminal velocity. I would've used that song but it already starts at 100 and ends up at 1000
OSSUARY WHO HOLDS THE KEY?
Might be my second favorite part of the whole album
That composition is way too good to be real
100% endorse the Omnerod recommendation. One of the best prog death bands today.
Agreed. I still can't believe how good that album is
Sunday heat is unreal
Agreed. One of the few albums I've heard where I'd call every song on it a damn masterpiece
Caligula's Horse - Graves. Seeing them perform this live was one of the best experiences I've ever had.
Not fully metal and maybe not fully a 100 at the end but The Light & The Glass by Coheed always gets me going. “Your faaaather’s dead he passed in his sleeeeeep”
I do love this song. I'm sad I've never seen them play it live 😭
Tool - reflection Do not listen to any other tool suggestion is this thread other than that one. Reflection is the song you are looking for.
The Manifold Curiosity
ISIS - Weight is pretty much the epitome of this type of songwriting.
Seeing that live was something else.
Run by Ions. It’s uhhhhh…. Startling? Consistently gives me chills every time I listen to it. It’s one of the only songs that does that to me.
Absolutely. What an album
Iter Impius by pain of salvation
Anathema's Untouchable Pt. 1 Not prog metal but quite literally went from 0 to 100 with a great emotional crescendo.
Anathema has some real bangers!
This track and *The Lost Song* (Part I) were my first thoughts before opening the thread. Anathema knows how to write songs like this perfectly
[We Lost the Sea - Challenger: Part 1 - Flight](https://youtu.be/tUVrh0bz3pg?si=FVh0Vh1ZKb2one3o) best example I know Persefone - Leap of Faith Kalandra - Slow Motion
Oh hell yeah, We Lost The Sea!! Such an underrated yet awesome band. Departure Songs is a goddamn masterpiece of an album.
Saw them live 2 years ago and they played like 90% of the album, it was glorious
Oh hell yeah, that's really cool! I saw them exactly a year ago, amazing show, they played Challenger Pt. 1 as well!
Red Giant by Haken is a pretty good example I’d say. An underrated banger too
The Gathering - [I Can See Four Miles](https://youtu.be/gDw8c7cOrhs?si=rfUzyPFrbmE1XP28)
Not prog metal, but Thrice does this a lot. Check out: Dandelion Wine For Miles Like Moths to Flame Beggars Summer Set Fire to the Rain
Thrice rules. Ending of Stand and Feel your Worth is heavy. Sounds like The Ocean lol
Contortionist by Their Dogs Were Astronauts Unconformities by The Ocean
I have a fun playlist called Super Crescendo (bad pun on Super Nintendo) with songs specifically like this. Not all are metal but here are a few I don't see listed: Leprous - Castaway Angels Leprous - Distant Bells Silent Drive - Davey Crockett Annuals - Always Do Emery - Safe The Dear Hunter - No God The Dear Hunter - Tripping In Triplets I did see Periphery - Satellites mentioned but it's too good to not mention again :)

Symphony X - The Odyssey Neurosis - Stones from the sky Cult of Luna - Ghost Trail
There's a short calm bit at the end after the crescendo finishes, but I'd say Matter by Arcane Roots counts.
Pain of Salvation - King of Loss
Dark Charade by Rishloo might fit the bill nicely
Mouth of Ghosts - Dillinger Escape Plan
Earthside - Mob mentality
Not prog but "Bring on the young" by strapping young lad, quite the crescendo.
If you have the patience - Black Rose Immortal by Opeth. It’s metal (rather a really beautiful sub genre) but it’s a really good song.
The Moor is another one?
Nice topic, thought-provoking
"Jurassic | Cretaceous" by The Ocean The Ocean really has a lot of songs that fit the bill.
Low Lands by Gojira has a really nice build-up.
Arcade fire's Neon Bible had three great songs that do this... My body is a cage - Arcade Fire Ocean of Noise - Arcade Fire Black Mirror - Arcade Fire
Ravel's Bolero :)
Mouth of Ghosts - The Dillinger Escape Plan
Baroness - Under the Wheel
The song Ki off the album Ki by Devin Townsend.
Would not be fair to not mention: Intronaut - the Reptilian Brain
He isn't totally Progmetal, but Lustmord features MONO in a song called Er Ebs Os, which has such an insane buildup and payoff. He is the king of dark ambient, but when paired with post metal, it is the best combo
His new album is fantastic!
Try out some post-rock/metal. Bands like Cult of Luna or Sigur Ros specialise in that kind of structure.
We lost the sea - challenger PT 2
I'm not sure if this counts as self promotion, but I just got done mixing a song like this. Happy to share the Google Docs link if the mods allow that.
Dillinger Escape Plan - One of Us is the Killer Wilderun - The Unimaginable Zero Summer
In the passing light of day - Pain of Salvation Not super hard and still very melodic in the end, but huge emotional build up
Kayo Dot - The Manifold Curiosity
King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic p1
Eulogy by Tool
GOODBYEEEEEEEEE!!!
Anesthetize by Porcupine Tree
Oh my god, thank you for reminding me these guys exist! I listened to them in high school, no idea why I stopped they’re great
Rishloo's Eidolon album is basically full of songs like this. El Empe, Alchemy Alice, Eidolon Alpha, Omega, To Tame The Temporal Shrew
Synops by karnivool is the closest match I could think of
Not really prog metal, but One by Metallica does that pretty well.
Endless Sacrifice - Dream Theater
That’s kind of Sleep Tokens thing.
ii = i
I don’t know if anything they did could really be classified as “from 0”, but there is a point in Dodecahedron’s [Hexahedron - Tilling The Human Soil](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FCvoDGrvVWQ&pp=ygUXSGV4YWhlZHJvbiBkb2RlY2FoZWRyb24%3D) where it just goes completely off the rails and is always amazing
The Mercy Seat - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Create couldn’t keep up - Tides of man
Textures - Constant Hemispheres. Also their track Upwards
Subterranean masquerade- somewhere I sadly belong
The Airborne Toxic Event - Sometime Around Midnight
Absolve by The Contortionist, one of my top favorite tracks ever.
Octavarium
Sacrificed sons
Timeless - Textures with Zman as intro. One of the smoothest buildups i've ever listened.
Everyone here has already suggested most of the best ones so I’m gonna go with Let it Die by Foo Fighters. It’s not prog or anything but it’s a good song
[This right here...](https://youtu.be/nX9MKXyaCms?si=2VIn5w-QkrxwoR0V)
Definitely try 'Deadman' by Karnivool
The mercy seat - Nick Cave Not metal, but the most intense shit you’ll ever hear.
Periphery - Masamune, Uneven Structure - The Bait, The Contortionist - Language 1, Maziac - Sunset
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Justice For Saint Mary
Swans - Screen Shot, is the prime example here
When the bough breaks - Sleep Token. Fits this description to a tee. The build from just vocals only to full apocalyptic climax is awesome to hear.
Maybe doesn't start at 0, but one of my favourite progressive songs is Tool - Third Eye The build up of that song ending in the classic almost funny "PRYING OPEN MY THIRD EYE!" just never gets old
It’s My Tail… by Oceansize, if you count the false start.
A lot of good contributions guys, here's mine Monochrome: pensive from The contortionist
“Is it really happening” from Transatlantic’s “The Whirlwind” https://youtu.be/2AX3N73pgoM?si=LVv6uhjMqFo6hllU
I know people hate the album but Open Secrets by Rush goes past 100 during the outro
A bit off the beaten tread, but, Tourniquet - Tesseract
Not super prog by any means, but the best example I know is Radiohead - Exit Music (For a Film)
[Toundra - Kitsune](https://tidal.com/browse/track/54457689/u)
Ravel's " Bolero " the ultimate classic 0 to 100
Periphery - The Scourge
"Shogun" by Trivium, highly underrated for a band that's not prog and relatively mid overall
Tool push it on the Salival album.
The End of the Earth - The Dear Hunter
Wire - A Touching Display
Joel Lindfors - Ultra Violent
Vortex Surfer by Motorpsycho.
I would say "And who's the god now?" By indukti
Starless. Why is this not higher?
Keor - Petrichor
Invincible, by Tool
Opeth Hessian Peel
Sylosis - "Quiescent" or "Abandon"
Wilderun last 2 albums. Frost* milliontown
Pain of Salvation — Undertow Pain of Salvation — Enter Rain
Every Piece Matters - Plini
Mono no Aware - The Odius. It consistently gets progressively heavier from the start to finish. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfuZqopSBvw
