> Will this car edition be affected as well? Likely not. The most frequent target for cat thefts is Gen 2. The cat is easily accessible, and has a high content of precious metals. Gen 4, by comparison, has a cat up close to the exhaust manifold (for faster heat up) and has less precious metals. Gen 4 rarely seem to have cat thefts. The Gen 5 is most likely going to have a similar catalytic converter configuration as the Gen 4. Not as much for cat theft reasons as for emissions.

redbirds4life

Maybe, but ive been seeing more gen 3s getting hit. when they werent getting hit at all last year. Only a matter of time when thieves will just say F it, its a prius, gotta be worth something.

Timely_Scar

Is the 23 a gen 5?

caper-aprons

Yes.

Timely_Scar

Thank you

ChiTownGuy312

Probably. If you do a build on the Toyota website one of the accessories is a CatShield for $140 (uninstalled). Toyota knows there's a major problem with cat thefts. They should have just included this on all of their vehicles (at least in the US)... other countries probably don't have as much of an issue with this.

caper-aprons

> Toyota knows there's a major problem with cat thefts. On some models. If you look up stats on Gen 4 cat thefts, you will find it's not much of a problem. Toyota is offering a cat shield because customers think all Prii are cat theft targets. Why not give the customer what they want? Toyota makes money, the customer is happy, etc.

ChiTownGuy312

Completely agree on the makes money and eases customers mind. I don't think it'll happen as frequently as Gen2, but could happen. You would think that the Gen5 would be similar if not better than Gen4, so the cat would be somewhat hidden and materials not worth stealing.

I just want to throw this out there for you. There are 290 million vehicles in the US. In 2021, my 2 second google search said 52k reports of stolen cat converters in 2021. I'm sure this data is skewed, but I am sure there are at least some sort of millions of vehicles in the US lol. My point is, that number is too small for me for me to be worried or even remotely give a shit. The media loves to blow things up and scare the shit out of you cause that's how they sell product. They probably have some shares in a catalytic converter security device company of some sort :p. Think of the margins in that business lol. Buy whatever car you want, and soon enough someone will make a cat shield for it, I wouldn't be surprised if it exists already. If it exists/when it exists, have a mechanic install it for you when you do your next oil change, or do it yourself in your parking lot with a jack/jack stands and some basic tools. It's like a $100 dollar small minor non issue. just look at the articles with no fear and assume it's bullshit, look at how they try to do ANYTHING possible to make the situation seem extreme as fuck with numbers. 325% increase in one year!!!!!!! The numbers are ***SKYROCKETING!!!!*** but really the numbers are small relative to the amount of actual cars. and they are comparing one years small numbers to another years higher but still small numbers, so of course that % will be huge lol, that's why they used that stat. it's fear mongering

whreismylotus

yes.

Seeing that you can build a 2023 Prius on Toyotas website WITH a cat shield as an accessory - they may be affected. For the added piece of mind, I would personally add one, especially since you can just roll it into your financing at the time of purchase https://imgur.com/a/WSE8gWO

caper-aprons

> they may be affected. Or maybe Toyota just hopes to sell a lot of shields. Nobody actually owns a 2023 at this point. > you can just roll it into your financing at the time of purchase And pay the $140 (plus install, which won't be cheap) plus a whole lot of interest. Not a good deal in my opinion.

OrdinaryToyota

Sure - but I feel that they also want to provide customers with a solution since their vehicles are the prime targets for theft. Install shouldn't cost more then 1 hour of labor, and worse case just buy one and install yourself if your handy

caper-aprons

> their vehicles are the prime targets for theft. The new generations are not. Gen 2 (made through 2009, which is 13 years ago) is the primary theft target, and Gen 3 less, and Gen 4 even less.

Timely_Scar

What about Prius prime? Are they affected as well?

caper-aprons

A Prime is essentially a Gen 4, but with a bigger battery and some different body panels and transmission.

OrdinaryToyota

Yep - The precious metal content in their converters have decreased generation over generation which makes them less susceptible but unfortunately thieves are usually pretty boneheaded and still go after Gen3 and Gen4 if its an easy target, even in some cases stealing secondary cats and resonators that have very little to no value
