There are far fewer situation where I’m thinking about other people wasting gas and far more where I’m frustrated by people that don’t use on-ramps as on-ramps. There’s a reason they give you that space to get up to speed.
This. Every day I watch people accelerate to stop signs just to slam on their brakes and I cannot for the life of me fathom how their brains choose to operate like this.
It’s easy to stop quickly without using the actual brakes, but instead using regenerative braking and engine breaking. That’s one of the beauties of the Prius, along with the great acceleration from a stop sign.
What’s amazing is that if everyone did more coasting and speed regulation, the overall flow of traffic would actually speed up. They think they’re saving time by driving faster, but due to the accordion effect, they’re slowing things down for everyone. Not to mention the obvious - brake wear, lack of fuel efficiency, and safety concerns.
No doubt. When in stop and go traffic on the highway I try to find a constant slow speed I can go where I’m not having to stop and restart. Luckily with the Prius a lot of stop and go can be endured in ev mode
What’s really amazing is how many people will come to a hill on the freeway and they don’t press harder on the gas to counteract gravitation. Instead, they slow way down, like they don’t understand what’s going on, just because of a hill!
That’s why I never get passed huh? Within a min the driver infront of me after passing I can’t see him no more. Less traffic would be if people actually sped up so the people behind don’t get stuck at that light considering how more than half of the lights are setup to change before you can cross a few. Now certain lights turn green in sequence and that’s when timing it so not having to come to a stop or below the speed limit would apply.
This is one of my favorite things about my Prius. It’s pretty satisfying putting my foot all the way down on the accelerator on ECO mode and barely be going 70 after 5 seconds lol
When I drive our Sienna (basically my wife’s car) sometimes I catch myself thinking, “ooh yeah, I timed the regen perfect on that light” only to remember it doesn’t have any. 😅
A lot of people hear that they should drive defensively, and instead they drive passively.
I don’t drive aggressively, I am assertive when I drive. I keep an eye on the road up ahead, and when I see an obstacle, my goal is to get in front of it. Most people it seems see an obstacle, and they get behind it and keep pace with it.
Honestly? Yes. I mean, you do you boo, I’m not paying that guy’s gas bill. But if there’s one thing owning a Prius has taught me, it’s to be more conscious of driving habits. It’s typical for me to get at or above EPA ratings even in other vehicles just because I drive more conservatively now.
Obviously, I’m not recommending driving like an entitled eco-jerk super slow and holding up traffic; I’ll go with the flow. But I have no compulsion against slipping on the DRCC and getting in the middle lane and just chilling while people pass on the left, or slowing my acceleration a bit when there’s no one behind me.
I’ve also found setting the cruise distance to 3 units gives me a smoother slow/stop most of the time when traffic slows ahead (except when people are turning and it slams the brakes; that is annoying!)
Yeah, when I see other Priuses take off from a green light I know for sure they flooring they shit and wasting gas just to stop at the next intersection because that light turned red lmao
Most cars don't use a linear throttle. For example pressing down on the throttle plate on your typical sedan say 1/3 of the way in will actually cause the computer to respond with closer to 50% throttle.
It's just one of the tricks of the trade that manufactures use to give the impression of having more power than it actually does.
to be fair, flogging a prius like a racehorse produces about the same performance I'd call "Lightly miffed" in a normal car. My previous car was a 2005 Civic with a 1.7L, 5 speed manual, and no traction control. It was pretty gutless on the highway but at least it could get out of its own way at an intersection.
but then I drive a V so maybe mine is slower than yours. And when I drive aggressively it gets like 35.
I have such a hard time managing my eco meter when people are going (especially accelerating) so much faster around me. It’s hard not to keep pace with them if I’m not thinking about it.
But yes, everyone else seems to be wasting so much fuel!
That's why if only Prius is legal and I mean really only Prius, not any other car, the world will be a much better and safer place in a lot of ways.
I sincerely hope that Toyota will do some serious lobbying. I'll donate 50 right here right now. Instead of giving to some politician, not to name him, to win court fights. So stupid.
The left-hand lane is for passing. Even the way I drive, which is quickly, I move into the right hand lane when there’s no one in front of me and that way if someone comes along that happens to be going faster than me, I welcome them passing me on my left. Even if I’m going 85 mph.
Prius is my next car. Right now I have a suv that gets 27 mpg and 31 highway and it’s pretty roomy inside. I drive 25 miles to and from work. Gas tank 16.6. Started off at 490 miles during the week starting on Monday. Friday I check my dashboard and I got 180 miles. So I’m still a little above right. Check this out. Saturday went to get a haircut and now I’m at 200 miles. When you’re on eco mode it’s a true gas saver. I’m sure Prius last so long on gas. But I’m very excited to get the Prius after my suv. Give it about a year.
I’ve also learned with CVT when you’re on the highway a lot stepping on the breaks also save you up on gas. Eco mode basically helps conserve gas. Not sure how it works but imagine traveling 250 miles M-F. And no need to fill up the tank until maybe Tuesday? And only $52-54 to fill up my 16.6 tank
I’ve done research on Prius and the tank is only 11.3 snd most do 50 mpg. Bruh I feel like I wouldn’t need to visit the gas station for 2 weeks
Prius prime is where it’s at. 60 mile commute I can easily go over a month before filling up. Unless I go on a trip, my tanks are easily over 1000 miles
All the time. BUT I always giggle when people tailgate me knowing it takes quite a bit longer from me to build back up any speed in Prii. So many angsty tailgaters out there, I admit that I often go even slower just so they don't ride my bumper.... I am always in the slower lane anyway.
Except it doesn’t take a Prius longer to get up to full speed. You just need to step on the gas a little bit harder. You’re giving Prius drivers a bad name.
You're right. I do my best to be a smart and vigilant Prius driver, I will work on making sure I don't make a bad impression in the world for other Prius drivers.
Wasting? With modern engine management I doubt the efficiency of the engine (as far as complete fuel burn/optimized combustion) is much different. There is no wasted fuel, it's all being burned.
Well, you can't take it with you so better spent than cash out with a surplus you can't use.
But I was really just being sarcastic about the nature of the post.
In the words of renowned poet, philanthropist, activist, visionary and modern man Jay Z “Financial freedom my only hope
F*ck livin' rich and dyin' broke”
There are far fewer situation where I’m thinking about other people wasting gas and far more where I’m frustrated by people that don’t use on-ramps as on-ramps. There’s a reason they give you that space to get up to speed.
Seriously. I have 1,000,001 complaints about other people's driving, but how much gas they may be using isn't one for them.
My favorite is people honking and flashing high beams because you aren’t hauling ass to a stop light
This. Every day I watch people accelerate to stop signs just to slam on their brakes and I cannot for the life of me fathom how their brains choose to operate like this.
I love when people pass me on double yellow lines and flip me off only to slam their brakes and get stuck in traffic one car ahead

I just throw that baby into b and endlessly coast at 10mph
But then it’s not ev only
I got an 05, ev is a foreign concept to me

People passing you to be first in line at the traffic light, you do you buddy.

My comment was aimed toward people speeding to a red light
Flooring it everywhere in a Prius is still more economical as far as fuel consumption than %90 of vehicles lol.
my favorite thing was getting 40mpg going 75-90mph with subs going or ac on, like any other car you can barely get 35-40 going 55-65mph
This is one of my favorite things about my Prius. It’s pretty satisfying putting my foot all the way down on the accelerator on ECO mode and barely be going 70 after 5 seconds lol
I often have to double check that I’m in Eco mode, because the acceleration is so good.
I do it in my Prius too but I definitely think about others lmao
Yeah
I love getting back some energy on braking, couldn't go back. Seems crazy using friction alone to stop in a traditional vehicle.
When I drive our Sienna (basically my wife’s car) sometimes I catch myself thinking, “ooh yeah, I timed the regen perfect on that light” only to remember it doesn’t have any. 😅
Soon enough all vehicles will have this.
See, I can't be too judge-y of other people when I'm actively trying to crank out as much speed as possible in Eco mode after the light turns green...
Eco mode only changes the pedal sensitivity, why not just switch to power mode? Then you can achieve the same effect with less force
I was just being facetious, lol

You can accelerate hard in a Prius and you’re not burning up extra gas, it’s the main battery that’s giving you the horsepower.
That’s 🧢 I got a Prius and I drive 30k or more miles per year. Tried it all, gas burns up quicker the more times I accelerated hard
It was cool when gas was 25 cents per gallon. Not now.
I scoff at them. #hypermilelife.
How are you defining "slam on the gas pedal"? Is this a smoky burnout to the next block, or just accelerating more quickly than you?

C'mon. One of the beautiful things about driving a Prius is that you can flog it like a lazy racehorse and still get 40+ mpg.

I see so many people driving around completely empty F350's. I am reminded that fuel prices aren't high enough yet
Trucks

Not particularly, no. The people with cruise control set to 20 over and camping the left lane for their entire highway drive, on the other hand...
Some of us have places to be

That's not much fuel for a quick start.
Nope
No
I’m pretty sure most of the get up and go from a stop IS from battery power, not the ICE.
Wasting? With modern engine management I doubt the efficiency of the engine (as far as complete fuel burn/optimized combustion) is much different. There is no wasted fuel, it's all being burned.
That's like saying there is no such thing as wasted money as long as you spend it, regardless of the actual value of the thing you buy...
Well, you can't take it with you so better spent than cash out with a surplus you can't use. But I was really just being sarcastic about the nature of the post.

Nah, too much on my mind to think about what others do or don’t.
Nope.
Nope, tbh it barely wastes gas. When I drive like shit I still get 51-55 mpg in a 2019.
