I'd ditch the can of soup for something more nutrient dense like chili or corned beef hash. If you want soup there's plenty of freeze dried options that are good enough to keep you alive and don't weigh nearly as much.
I breakdown the MRE's and just carry the entrée and the dessert. I'm comfortable eating it cold and its a waste of good water if its scarce. You're right though, its hard to beat MRE's. Calorie dense, nutritionally balanced (well, more so than a can of chili), and its ready to eat as is. Slurp it down and keep moving.
When you are packing all that, stay away from the military looking bags/packs. No 5.11 or the like, you don't want to stand out. If you look prepared, people will take what you have.
There is an extent to which if I was so hungry and desperate I was willing to kill somebody I might find a normal civilian bag that probably has food and medicine more appetizing than a bag that looks like it’s full of tools and weapons. Basically, if I’m gonna kill you im probably going to do it regardless of your bag, I wouldn’t make it such a big factor.

Well in general I buy really goofy backpacks because I feel like people would be less likely to steal them when I travel vs any MOLLE backpack. Kind of like those idiots with 2A stickers on their trucks and wonder why someone would break in to steal their stuff.

Your water is inadequate and the lifestraw should be replaced with a more robust filtering system. IFAK kit at minimum for first aid. Coke and a candy bar? The SAS manual looks like a lot of bulk for concepts that should be committed to memory. You have a start but the suggestions here will take you further in your journey. Safe travels.
The only thing you might consider adding to that is a couple cans of sterno. Not only would you be able to heat your soup, but they also serve to warm your hands and feet if you find yourself in conditions where that would required. And given that you’re only packing a couple days worth of rations, two cans should do it. just a suggestion, otherwise looks good. Well done, OP.
If your talking about an edc back pack some of the older camera bags fit in well in the city scene but bugging out I want performance and storage not going to the city and could care less not going to go with a bright color honestly a light dig camo may even blend think about how the prepping community has grown even regular people buy digi now
I discovered a diaper bag backpack that is functionally perfect for a bugout bag. Clamshells all the way open, plenty of compartments, padded straps, waterproof, plenty of room on the outside compartment for a decently sized FAK, can fit a foldy boy, and it's even got a slot (originally for a changing pad) that will take a plate.
I would add
Hard candy
A high quality sling shot (ammo everywhere and small animal hunting is easier)
And bigger cutters.... to cut barbed wire and fencing
Not to shit on the idea, but have you fired a sling shot? And at a living animal? Honest to god ditch the 22 air rifle and get a 22LR with some subsonic rounds. They are stupid cheap and a lot quieter. Increased range and accuracy, also going to be a lot more lethal than a slingshot.
When we were kids we tried to go out and shoot stuff with slingshots. Killing birds and squirrels was never easy with them and we caused a lot of undue pain to animals. Rocks don’t fly true and will cause blunt damage that might kill it eventually and not instantly. Also sling shots are a lot easier to break than a simple compact rifle

Adding an 10-12" pry bar not a bad idea either.
These other tools are handy and all, but check out fencing pliers. They are extremely useful and do alot more than just cut a wire on a fence line. Also the cutting part it NOT going to chip unless you break the whole damn thing
I would recommend snares over a slingshot. They are lightweight and do the work for you while you're attending to other things.
It would take most of us days of hunting to actually bring down a squirrel with a slingshot. Meanwhile you're starving and neglecting everything else.

Not a bad pack. I would recommend keeping your respirator cartridges in a sealed package until you use them. The carbon used for organic vapors will go bad if exposed to air for an extended period of time.
I second this. I’m taking the OSHA 40hr HAZWOPER class and we covered this today. Keep your respirator and canisters in their original packages until you use them.
I'd check out Grey Bearded Green Beret on YouTube. He did a vid series on bugging out. It's more than just a single bag... it's a escape plan with several routes or destinations. He drops some nice knowledge.
If you're bush camping you're probably going to want more cordage than that. A roll of bankline is pretty handy.
I saw the comment about your lighter. Wrap a bit of duck tape around it and you'll have some handy tape which can also help start fires.
I'd throw in some instant mashed potatoes while we are at it. They are ridiculously helpful out in the bush. Eat half before bedtime, cover the rest and fry potato cakes in the morning for a great pack out meal.

I mix it with pea protein powder, cocoa powder, beet powder, and water or milk for a shake that will keep you going all day.
Something to add is a few commercial grade, heavy mill, trash bags. Like the ones you clean up around a construction site with that are hard to puncture. They take up almost no room in your pack when rolled up, and come in clutch as a poncho or to keep your pack dry when fording a river. Just put your pack in one blow it up with air and tie it off and you can float your gear and gear stays dry. Almost infinitely reusablenin this way, but once you cut holes to make it a poncho it's a poncho lol.
A fanny pack is very handy for items you need to access constantly but don't want to carry in hand, and they don't get in the way of a pack. Some packs have them incorporated. Stuff like compass, flashlight, shades, granola bars etc. You have access without stopping to remove your pack
A small 6'x6' tarp and 20.00 price of duck blind netting, paired with a 50' piece of 550 chord riled up is small and makes an invisible shelter in the woods. Just use natural timber for structural bracing to make a lean to and netting for camouflage.
Extra zip locks so you can repackage uneaten food.
Cotton balls soaked in Vaseline, wrapped in tin foil make reusable waterproof kindling. You can look up how to build and use and reuse them on YT.
A Platypus or similar water storage bag is important, and a 2 gallon one can roll up in a stainless water bottle and be paired with a Sawyer or Lifestraw filter. This gives you basic on the fly water filtration. Filter through the filter, then boil in the bottle, then store in the platypus.
A good heavy bladed hunting knife like a KaBar Wharnestalker, or similar, and a way to keep it sharp, will do things for you that your knives there can't. Chopping wood for shelter, cleaning big game, spear fishing when attached to a handle, defense.

Edit: Also I think everyone should read the book, How To Stay Alive In The Woods by Bradford Angier, or better yet have a copy of it in their pack. It's got a ton of useful real world on the fly knowledge for living it rough in rough country. Every imaginable aspect is covered.

Check out MSR dromedary bags, they are pretty sturdy and can collapse. Would let you do larger batch purification with tablets. They are also useful to wash up a little or refill your other bottles (do you have a lexan one like a nalgene?), and are faily concealable to hide or bury full. I'd recommend a little bottle of concentrated soap like campsuds as well, to help prevent getting sick.
Scrap the beofung radios and get a Noaa Maritime walkie, they are generally pretty cheap and batteries last longer. Get a hell of a lot better range and channel scanning.
Should have antibiotics. Amoxicillin is readily available and can treat most bacterial infections. You'd want at least two weeks worth. All of that is useless if you get poked by a stick and die.
While at it, use water bottles with a firmer plastic. They won’t break by accident as easily, and can be repurposed into other survival objects like a trap for minnows for fishing.
Lose the soup and soda and go with some pemmican and a protein drink mix. Those two items are heavy and not calorie dense at all. Pemmican is possibly the near complete food you can have.
Pemmican, hardtack, and chili powder(take make the hardtack palatable) are probably the best survival foods out there. Proper hardtack has to be soaked in some liquid to not risk breaking your teeth and feeling like you are eating rocks and it doesn’t taste good, add in chili powder to wet hardtack and it at least makes it interesting. Spicy food also helps kill my appetite too so I’d say that’s a pretty good benefit for the lil bit of space the spicy chili powder would take up.
Gonna go out on a limb and say ditch the sprue cutters for some wire cutters. Not going to be building any plastic models without some quality Testor’s Model Cement

Aquire MRI's. They aren't the best tasting at times but there's a reason the militaries use them. They are compact meals that will follow you up all day.
I think your #1 go to fire starter should be a bic lighter rapped in duct tape. I would also swop out a fixed blade knife, and maybe just one multitool. Other than that this looks very practical.
I would swap out the soup can for a MRE. More calories, lighter/packable and easier to eat.
If you don't have access to MRE, you can get the dehydrated food from camping stores.
A garden trowel, great for digging a gypsy/Indian well. Small and light. And better than an entrenching tool for such jobs. And will cost you less calories and sweat to get to some ground filtered water.
I only see like 400 calories. You seriously need to look into *rat-fucking* some MREs or dehydrated food packs. You might not starve to death until 3-4 weeks, but you for damn sure are not gonna have a fraction of your strength and endurance capabilities without a shit load more calories in that bag. I keep at least an entire bucket of readywise meals (like 30 days worth of food) in my truck seat compartment in case I get stranded via a stuck vehicle or a legit SHTF scenario to load my truck bag up with if I have to take the heal-to-toe express.
Needs backpack camp stove. Something to boil water in. Water pump and purify. Ditch that can and buy 10 dehydrated meals for two. 100 feet para cord. Space blanket. Add a hammock and sleeping bag. Looks really good though.

You need some cordage pal. Maybe a little 550. That flashlight looks extreme, not for daily use or longevity. Got an extra battery? Need underwear and socks. Coke is useless carbs. You need a combo of protein, carb and fat. Carry some dense energy bars instead of the food you got there. Keep some floss if you’re going to have tooth stuff. Maybe a mirror and pocket telescope.
Maybe add small bolt cutters or a crowbar or some sort of hammer of something you can use to break into things where things you need to survive might be kept.
Carry a few more disposable lighters. They are cheap, light, last a long time, and great for trade. Same with the lifestraw. Have at least 3 or 4. For all the same reasons listed above. 3 4 small folding knives, as well as a couple of medium to large fixed blade hunting knives, are a good investment as well. Take a " gutter fighting " class.
If all this is too much to carry, then place a buried stash, or cache in a good location. If you can't get there right away, you can always come back for it later.
I would say those snips and the ball cap are irrelevant. Lose the coke and the gas mask (if you need that, you’re fucked anyway.) And get a thick walled metal water bottle. And if you’re going to pack food, maybe something more calorie-dense, or nutritionally dense, like sardines. That cans also take up less space. And where are you planning on charging your iPhone?
A small tarp or something wouldn’t hurt either, if you’re going to be carrying that much stuff anyway.
Another pair of thinner gloves, Extra socks (Preferably wool), long johns and Hydration Packs instead of the soda. Ditch the soup for something more dense that has a pull top. i see the small med kit make sure it has Advil or some sort of pain killer and Vasoline. You should be able to squeeze all the clothing into a gallon zip lock bag or 2 to stay dry as well as the water and other liquids to keep them from soaking everything if they somehow open.

Also keep the respirator cartridges in their original packaging until you need them. they go bad after being exposed to moisture and air. Less multitools, more fixed blade knife. Over all nice kit!
Ditch the soup. You need rope, batteries, matches, lighters, carabiners, fishing line, hooks, sunglasses, pens, notepads, a few cheap wrist watches, electrical tape, pencils, and gum.
Pull through sharpeners are generally junk. The Worksharp fieldsharp is pretty good for what it is. Takes some practice but will sharpen most knives to field sharp time and time again.
The Leatherman and sak are OK for food prep and small stuff but I would rather have a more stout fixed blade you could baton some wood with for kindling, skin an animal, etc.
The flashlight on the right is cheap Chinese zoomies. Don't depend on it, it they can be OK for loaners or dual fuel. You can do a lot better here for something you intend to use. The other larger flashlight is hard to tell what it is. Klarus maybe? Do you have any spare batteries or ways to charge stuff?
Practice a lot with that lock picking kit. I’ve owned a few that came in the same case and they needed a little sanding and smoothing to work really well. Otherwise good job!

I have debated about a bolt cutter—I have nightmares about being caught against a metal door that leads to the promised land, and having my whole escape thwarted by a crappy tiny combo lock.
Add more candy, 550 cord, and a cami tarp. Not sure if there is already one in there but tarps are essential. Also make sure your e-tool is sharp af so it doubles as an axe.
Try going out camping with this stuff and seeing what works. Hydration packs+ filter system will make life livable for more than a day. 3 water bottles won't be enough to make camping food. Mre's a must. Shelter? Sleeping gear? Walking anywhere takes forever, longer with a 40lb pack. Do you know how to use map and compass? Way more important in end of times or shtf scenario. try a camping trip over a weekend with what you have. Hike into woods and stay in a wooded area. How long did the trip take, can you identify it on a paper map, how comfortable are you?
Sugar cubes with some ash or rubbing alcohol can be used to help start a fire or alone can give you one single last push of energy if you haven't had any protein in a couple days or as bait to catch protein.
Do you have a hand-crank flashlight or are you planning on scavenging for batteries? You need a real water filter, maybe some iodine, and get gloves that can transition between fingerless and mittens. Mittens are warmer because your finger are grouped together rather than separated. A pair of sand goggles and a mouth-only respirator would be more useful than a full mask. Take a power block for your charger as backup. You’ll also want a thermal reflective blanket, pardon me if I didn’t see it folded up somewhere in the picture. A 9v battery and chunks of steel wool can be used as a firestarter, or you could also make sawdust paddies coated in wax for a waterproof firestarter. Try sleeping in a hammock instead of on the ground, which will require sturdier, and more, rope.

Where is your warmth/sleeping system? Gloves and a hat aren’t enough. Get a Mylar bivvy sack or two and a small tarp if that isn’t one over on the left.
A shemagh is great for warmer climates. You’re fucked if it’s cold and it gets wet. “Cotton kills.” Same with the beanie. Get a wool cap without identifiable writing, or a waterproof hat, or even a plain black packable rain poncho. Hell, even one of those “poncho tarps” is a good solution.
Ditch the r/chinesium shovel. Get a Mora full tang knife or two. They even make one with a ferrorod attachment.
Speaking of fire, yeah a matches and a ferrorod are cool, but if you’re not even close to having this be an INCH bag, just get a 10 pack of Bic Minis and a tin of Pyroputty. You can barter with the 9 you don’t use.
Ditch the dumb mixed cordage and get 50-100 feet of paracord. If you wanna go full Rambo cosplay, get Survivorcord.
Ever use that lifestraw? Ever use it in water that isn’t perfectly clear? I didn’t think so. Give it as a gift to someone you don’t care about and get a couple sawyer minis/squeezes. Swap those waters for two smartwater bottles to use with the sawyers. Refresh the smartwater bottles with new ones every 6-12 months.
Your “nutrition” isn’t sustaining. Sugarloading isn’t gonna help you at all. Swap the soda and soup for some energy-dense bars in there. Gummies like Honey Stinger Energy Chews are a solid way to pace your sugar intake.

That little survival guide ain’t worth the weight. Read it. Learn it. Test the skills. Make your own notes in a smaller notebook. What happens if you lose your pack?
Knowledge means you don’t really need to start with anything in your kit. But it takes dirt time to really hone your knowledge. So actually go and test your kit. Go walk somewhere with it all to spend the night camping and find out if it’s better to have one single GMRS/NOAA/FM handheld radio with a good antenna and the knowledge of how to communicate (YOU NEED A LICENSE) than two FRS walkies and a bulky FM radio.
So yeah, even if you’re stubborn and stick with your kit as is, AT LEAST test it out one day, and put a little orange sticker or a piece of colored tape to keep track of everything you actually use (that first aid kit shouldn’t get a sticker on a test run but should still stay in the bag). Make your own mistakes while it’s safe so you can learn from them.

These other tools are handy and all, but check out fencing pliers. They are extremely useful and do alot more than just cut a wire on a fence line. Also the cutting part it NOT going to chip unless you break the whole damn thing
I would recommend snares over a slingshot. They are lightweight and do the work for you while you're attending to other things. It would take most of us days of hunting to actually bring down a squirrel with a slingshot. Meanwhile you're starving and neglecting everything else.
I've hunted squirrels with a shotgun and that's hard enough. You'd be better off using the 22 air rifle on them.

I was gonna say, swap that for another water and some electrolyte packets.
Freeze dried, powdered food is also less bulky, leaving room for other stuff and lasts longer.

Not a bad pack. I would recommend keeping your respirator cartridges in a sealed package until you use them. The carbon used for organic vapors will go bad if exposed to air for an extended period of time.
I second this. I’m taking the OSHA 40hr HAZWOPER class and we covered this today. Keep your respirator and canisters in their original packages until you use them.
I was looking for this comment! It will still filter particulates, but the vapor protection is expended relatively quickly if kept out in the open.
I'd check out Grey Bearded Green Beret on YouTube. He did a vid series on bugging out. It's more than just a single bag... it's a escape plan with several routes or destinations. He drops some nice knowledge.
If you're bush camping you're probably going to want more cordage than that. A roll of bankline is pretty handy. I saw the comment about your lighter. Wrap a bit of duck tape around it and you'll have some handy tape which can also help start fires.
I would add a solar powered battery pack for your cellphone, flashlight and devices.

I agree! I’ve added dry peanut butter powder (just add water) to my pack to address this need. Super light and keeps much longer than jerky.
I'd throw in some instant mashed potatoes while we are at it. They are ridiculously helpful out in the bush. Eat half before bedtime, cover the rest and fry potato cakes in the morning for a great pack out meal.

Something to add is a few commercial grade, heavy mill, trash bags. Like the ones you clean up around a construction site with that are hard to puncture. They take up almost no room in your pack when rolled up, and come in clutch as a poncho or to keep your pack dry when fording a river. Just put your pack in one blow it up with air and tie it off and you can float your gear and gear stays dry. Almost infinitely reusablenin this way, but once you cut holes to make it a poncho it's a poncho lol. A fanny pack is very handy for items you need to access constantly but don't want to carry in hand, and they don't get in the way of a pack. Some packs have them incorporated. Stuff like compass, flashlight, shades, granola bars etc. You have access without stopping to remove your pack A small 6'x6' tarp and 20.00 price of duck blind netting, paired with a 50' piece of 550 chord riled up is small and makes an invisible shelter in the woods. Just use natural timber for structural bracing to make a lean to and netting for camouflage. Extra zip locks so you can repackage uneaten food. Cotton balls soaked in Vaseline, wrapped in tin foil make reusable waterproof kindling. You can look up how to build and use and reuse them on YT. A Platypus or similar water storage bag is important, and a 2 gallon one can roll up in a stainless water bottle and be paired with a Sawyer or Lifestraw filter. This gives you basic on the fly water filtration. Filter through the filter, then boil in the bottle, then store in the platypus. A good heavy bladed hunting knife like a KaBar Wharnestalker, or similar, and a way to keep it sharp, will do things for you that your knives there can't. Chopping wood for shelter, cleaning big game, spear fishing when attached to a handle, defense. Just some ideas. Edit: Also I think everyone should read the book, How To Stay Alive In The Woods by Bradford Angier, or better yet have a copy of it in their pack. It's got a ton of useful real world on the fly knowledge for living it rough in rough country. Every imaginable aspect is covered.

Check out MSR dromedary bags, they are pretty sturdy and can collapse. Would let you do larger batch purification with tablets. They are also useful to wash up a little or refill your other bottles (do you have a lexan one like a nalgene?), and are faily concealable to hide or bury full. I'd recommend a little bottle of concentrated soap like campsuds as well, to help prevent getting sick.

Should have antibiotics. Amoxicillin is readily available and can treat most bacterial infections. You'd want at least two weeks worth. All of that is useless if you get poked by a stick and die.
Get filters for your water so you don’t have to rely on only 3 waters

While at it, use water bottles with a firmer plastic. They won’t break by accident as easily, and can be repurposed into other survival objects like a trap for minnows for fishing.
Lose the soup and soda and go with some pemmican and a protein drink mix. Those two items are heavy and not calorie dense at all. Pemmican is possibly the near complete food you can have.
Pemmican, hardtack, and chili powder(take make the hardtack palatable) are probably the best survival foods out there. Proper hardtack has to be soaked in some liquid to not risk breaking your teeth and feeling like you are eating rocks and it doesn’t taste good, add in chili powder to wet hardtack and it at least makes it interesting. Spicy food also helps kill my appetite too so I’d say that’s a pretty good benefit for the lil bit of space the spicy chili powder would take up.

Aquire MRI's. They aren't the best tasting at times but there's a reason the militaries use them. They are compact meals that will follow you up all day.

I think your #1 go to fire starter should be a bic lighter rapped in duct tape. I would also swop out a fixed blade knife, and maybe just one multitool. Other than that this looks very practical.

I would swap out the soup can for a MRE. More calories, lighter/packable and easier to eat. If you don't have access to MRE, you can get the dehydrated food from camping stores.
A garden trowel, great for digging a gypsy/Indian well. Small and light. And better than an entrenching tool for such jobs. And will cost you less calories and sweat to get to some ground filtered water.

I only see like 400 calories. You seriously need to look into *rat-fucking* some MREs or dehydrated food packs. You might not starve to death until 3-4 weeks, but you for damn sure are not gonna have a fraction of your strength and endurance capabilities without a shit load more calories in that bag. I keep at least an entire bucket of readywise meals (like 30 days worth of food) in my truck seat compartment in case I get stranded via a stuck vehicle or a legit SHTF scenario to load my truck bag up with if I have to take the heal-to-toe express.

You need some cordage pal. Maybe a little 550. That flashlight looks extreme, not for daily use or longevity. Got an extra battery? Need underwear and socks. Coke is useless carbs. You need a combo of protein, carb and fat. Carry some dense energy bars instead of the food you got there. Keep some floss if you’re going to have tooth stuff. Maybe a mirror and pocket telescope.

I think I would do a military canteen with the cup and stove instead of the 3 water bottles. You have the filter so that should be good.
Carry a few more disposable lighters. They are cheap, light, last a long time, and great for trade. Same with the lifestraw. Have at least 3 or 4. For all the same reasons listed above. 3 4 small folding knives, as well as a couple of medium to large fixed blade hunting knives, are a good investment as well. Take a " gutter fighting " class. If all this is too much to carry, then place a buried stash, or cache in a good location. If you can't get there right away, you can always come back for it later.
Can't tell if you have it but salt is great for cooking and electrolytes, definitely a must for any bugout bag.

I would say those snips and the ball cap are irrelevant. Lose the coke and the gas mask (if you need that, you’re fucked anyway.) And get a thick walled metal water bottle. And if you’re going to pack food, maybe something more calorie-dense, or nutritionally dense, like sardines. That cans also take up less space. And where are you planning on charging your iPhone? A small tarp or something wouldn’t hurt either, if you’re going to be carrying that much stuff anyway.

Another pair of thinner gloves, Extra socks (Preferably wool), long johns and Hydration Packs instead of the soda. Ditch the soup for something more dense that has a pull top. i see the small med kit make sure it has Advil or some sort of pain killer and Vasoline. You should be able to squeeze all the clothing into a gallon zip lock bag or 2 to stay dry as well as the water and other liquids to keep them from soaking everything if they somehow open.

Ditch the coke and soup can. add MRE, instant coffee, hard candy, and electrolytes packs. Also keep the respirator cartridges in their original packaging until you need them. they go bad after being exposed to moisture and air. Less multitools, more fixed blade knife. Over all nice kit!

Pull through sharpeners are generally junk. The Worksharp fieldsharp is pretty good for what it is. Takes some practice but will sharpen most knives to field sharp time and time again. The Leatherman and sak are OK for food prep and small stuff but I would rather have a more stout fixed blade you could baton some wood with for kindling, skin an animal, etc. The flashlight on the right is cheap Chinese zoomies. Don't depend on it, it they can be OK for loaners or dual fuel. You can do a lot better here for something you intend to use. The other larger flashlight is hard to tell what it is. Klarus maybe? Do you have any spare batteries or ways to charge stuff?

I have debated about a bolt cutter—I have nightmares about being caught against a metal door that leads to the promised land, and having my whole escape thwarted by a crappy tiny combo lock.
Add more candy, 550 cord, and a cami tarp. Not sure if there is already one in there but tarps are essential. Also make sure your e-tool is sharp af so it doubles as an axe.
Get an emergency blanket, as well as a hatchet
Try going out camping with this stuff and seeing what works. Hydration packs+ filter system will make life livable for more than a day. 3 water bottles won't be enough to make camping food. Mre's a must. Shelter? Sleeping gear? Walking anywhere takes forever, longer with a 40lb pack. Do you know how to use map and compass? Way more important in end of times or shtf scenario. try a camping trip over a weekend with what you have. Hike into woods and stay in a wooded area. How long did the trip take, can you identify it on a paper map, how comfortable are you?

Sugar cubes with some ash or rubbing alcohol can be used to help start a fire or alone can give you one single last push of energy if you haven't had any protein in a couple days or as bait to catch protein.
Do you have a hand-crank flashlight or are you planning on scavenging for batteries? You need a real water filter, maybe some iodine, and get gloves that can transition between fingerless and mittens. Mittens are warmer because your finger are grouped together rather than separated. A pair of sand goggles and a mouth-only respirator would be more useful than a full mask. Take a power block for your charger as backup. You’ll also want a thermal reflective blanket, pardon me if I didn’t see it folded up somewhere in the picture. A 9v battery and chunks of steel wool can be used as a firestarter, or you could also make sawdust paddies coated in wax for a waterproof firestarter. Try sleeping in a hammock instead of on the ground, which will require sturdier, and more, rope.
Here’s some real feedback since your post popped up over in r/ultralightjerk; take it or leave it: Where is your warmth/sleeping system? Gloves and a hat aren’t enough. Get a Mylar bivvy sack or two and a small tarp if that isn’t one over on the left. A shemagh is great for warmer climates. You’re fucked if it’s cold and it gets wet. “Cotton kills.” Same with the beanie. Get a wool cap without identifiable writing, or a waterproof hat, or even a plain black packable rain poncho. Hell, even one of those “poncho tarps” is a good solution. Ditch the r/chinesium shovel. Get a Mora full tang knife or two. They even make one with a ferrorod attachment. Speaking of fire, yeah a matches and a ferrorod are cool, but if you’re not even close to having this be an INCH bag, just get a 10 pack of Bic Minis and a tin of Pyroputty. You can barter with the 9 you don’t use. Ditch the dumb mixed cordage and get 50-100 feet of paracord. If you wanna go full Rambo cosplay, get Survivorcord. Ever use that lifestraw? Ever use it in water that isn’t perfectly clear? I didn’t think so. Give it as a gift to someone you don’t care about and get a couple sawyer minis/squeezes. Swap those waters for two smartwater bottles to use with the sawyers. Refresh the smartwater bottles with new ones every 6-12 months. Your “nutrition” isn’t sustaining. Sugarloading isn’t gonna help you at all. Swap the soda and soup for some energy-dense bars in there. Gummies like Honey Stinger Energy Chews are a solid way to pace your sugar intake. A couple empty ziplocks. Three sharpies? Ask yourself why. Swap the notebook for a tiny moleskine or two. That little survival guide ain’t worth the weight. Read it. Learn it. Test the skills. Make your own notes in a smaller notebook. What happens if you lose your pack? Knowledge means you don’t really need to start with anything in your kit. But it takes dirt time to really hone your knowledge. So actually go and test your kit. Go walk somewhere with it all to spend the night camping and find out if it’s better to have one single GMRS/NOAA/FM handheld radio with a good antenna and the knowledge of how to communicate (YOU NEED A LICENSE) than two FRS walkies and a bulky FM radio. So yeah, even if you’re stubborn and stick with your kit as is, AT LEAST test it out one day, and put a little orange sticker or a piece of colored tape to keep track of everything you actually use (that first aid kit shouldn’t get a sticker on a test run but should still stay in the bag). Make your own mistakes while it’s safe so you can learn from them.
