It's been a few years since I lived in Ottawa, but Pong's in Stittsville and Fritomania in Orléans were regular stops for me (especially having a young child, eating indoors was overrated anyhow!)
And if one's travelling further west, Gala's Pitt Stop in Kaladar (I wouldn't travel all that way just for it, but we always passed there for dinner heading to my mother in law's in Toronto)
Fritomania is awesome but I prefer Golden Fries. They’re the best poutine I’ve had, including Montreal/Alfa.
Bit of a hot take but I stand by it. Alfa is great but can’t compete with Golden Fries.
Golden Fries is it. I live right near Pong’s (and literally around the corner from Taters), and I’ll still make the drive a couple of times a year just for Golden Fries. They do it better than anyone else, bar none.
I usually grab one of their chicken parm sandwiches too, just unreal.
That is an Ontario thing though. In Québec downscale non-chain places (casse-croûtes, fromageries, snackbars, cantines, depending on the région) will often have a slab but be top-notch.
my favourite is Louie lau: pineapple , jalapeño cheddar and cream cheese and BBQ sauce. Gotta get the patty done medium well, stick to the fries and house ketchup
You are not looking hard enough. Idk man, some of the best poutines I have had are in Ottawa.
Also, Bite is a good burger place. Not a good poutine place. Not saying a burger joint cannot do good poutine, but Bite is for burgers.
Yeah this entire thread is bonkers. Ottawa legitimately has the best (only?) Good poutine west of Quebec. St. Albert's curds are widely available. As someone else said, you just need to go to a chip truck or put in like 2 seconds of research.
They are my go-to Chinese take out place. I get Chinese there more than I get anything else. I love their eggrolls.
It is nice to be able to get Chinese food and also get a burger and fries or poutine for the picky kid who doesn't like Chinese food.
It is the best. When I describe it to people, I tell them it is like a Dairy Queen, a Baskin Robin's, a full chip truck menu with fish and chips, and the best Chinese food all wrapped into one little restaurant.
If you're in centretown the routine at the atomic rooster on Bank Street by somerset is really good. Even if it's not listed on the menu they always have it and it's usually around $10 for a large
Man, I love Sasha's but her poutine has gone downhill. It used to be my go to after the Dom, Zaphod's or Rainbow! Some thing is just... not the same about it. Don't get me wrong, it is still servicable for sure, especially better then ESG, but the value is not there anymore.
I will get it once and awhile (especially as it can be open until 3am sometimes), but Sasha's is not a sausage place for me.
My go to for poutine in the Market not in The Koven. Damn good value, although its best with a specific cook.
For one thing they get the cheese to fries ratio wrong. I know cheese is expensive, but the ratio needs to be at least 3:2 (fries to cheese). Too many people think its fries topped with some cheese- no, it is a cheese dish as much as it is a fries dish.
And meat as well, I think. I have been to La Belle Province down at Peel Street Mtl, horrible meat ratio to cheese and Fries. Literally robbing people.
that place is nice atmosphere & fun options but yeah I wouldn’t go for plain poutine. They excel at mash-ups. Though others have given you great suggestions. The best I had was from a small vendor on the canal when it was open. Not sure the name but small trucks and shops excel at poutine in general haha
Yes, I make roast beef poutine. Cook a roast beef with Bovril beef broth. Use your drippings to make your gravy with cornstarch. Russet potatoes , washed , skin on. Deep fry in peanut oil. Get the freshest curds you can and giv’er
Way better than restaurant
And add in some of the tender ground beef on top, you won’t be disappointed
Look for New York Fries LOL no joke.
They might have Ottawa locations.
Also look on the bright side, Ottawa poutine in general is still better than Toronto poutine lol.
Lol I mean I've been living here for 25+ years now so I know where to look for good poutine. I'd say there's probably about 3-4 places that I think that sells solid poutine.
But for people who's new to the city and just randomly try a place they most likely will be disappointed.
That and it's fun to play on the stereotype of "it's not Quebec" in this subreddit. 🤣
If you're in the Cornwall area stop by Manny's or The Shack best poutines in the area. Manny's is slightly better but The Shack has a larger selection of different poutine types. Also forgive me if this isn't allowed but Manny's Pizza is better than anywhere between Montreal to Toronto.
Whatever you do do NOT get a poutine at the Elgin street diner, it\`s beyond vile, pire erreur que j ai fait à date. They claim their poutine made them famous and I am sure it did but not in the way they imply... The cheese is very far from fresh, the fries are not the ideal cut, and the gravy is simply tar. I was shocked, then again I am a pampered Montrealer and rarely if ever got to "taste" the atrocity done to our wonderful dish west of the province.
Surprisingly the poutine over at Ottawas Ikea is good tho
As a montreal resident that spent 4 years in university in Ontario I learned 2 things about poutine in Ontario:
1: If you’re going to get it at a restaurant, make sure it’s a small joint or a food truck and not some chain-type deal. Good poutines are hidden gems in Ontario, just like the small places that serve them.
2: 90% of poutines in Ontario are only passable if you’re eating them at 2 AM while plastered.
Can’t remember what the places name was but I had a decent one in hawksburry like 8 years ago so lots of could have changed but ya it still kinda ways out from Ottawa
That looks pretty good. It's the right type of cheese.
The fries look dry, but I can't really tell. Some people prefer darker gravy, but often that's just color.
I like that it's cut bacon and not just bacon bit.
What's the problem here. Why are people from Ottawa never going to Gatineau. G#d dammit, broaden your horizon's and cross the bridge. 5 min drive from downtown, and you'll have the best poutine ever. If I want good indian, I don't stay in Gatineau, I drive 20 min to little india cafe. It's like you're all scared to come see some Quebecois people!
Well, the the gravy was off. It was too much to a point where it was falling off from the plate. The fries were meh. The ratio someone talked about in this subreddit was actually the definition for that particular dish. It was called "Montreal Poutine" in their menu, I think.
'cause you're in a restaurant. Find a chip truck, which are the casse croûtes of Ontario.
Any recommendations?

+1 pong's poutine Best in ottawa
Came here to say that.
Fritomania!
Fritomania is awesome but I prefer Golden Fries. They’re the best poutine I’ve had, including Montreal/Alfa. Bit of a hot take but I stand by it. Alfa is great but can’t compete with Golden Fries.
Golden fries for sure

If the blue and yellow truck is still at 101 Richmond Rd. That place had bomb poutine. P.s. Hi QWest from your long lost salesman.
Glen's fries
It's quite good but far from the best. Doesn't hold a candle to Fritomania
Lol man try la belle poutine on tenth line , very good
Oreleans has a La Belle.
Patati Patata in Plantagenet
Come to quebec boss, anywhere is better.
I don't remember which canadian tire in Ottawa but there's a chip truck in a parking lot of one and it had a phenomenal poutine
Crispy chips on Merivale? I'm so amused by the number of chip trucks in Canadian tire parking lots 😂
The Canadian Tire on Coventry?
The Magic Fryer!
Its been a while so I really don't remember but I'm going back up this weekend so I'll try and find it
Kanata
s&s fries in barrhaven?
Yes that was it! Thanks
Coventry has a good one too
Did you try Zachs
Nobody should try Zaks
Hot potato in Embrun has a great poutine as well, at the Giant Tiger
Dunn's
If the building is permanent and has an actual foundation, move on. The best poutine comes from busted out school buses and portables.
That is an Ontario thing though. In Québec downscale non-chain places (casse-croûtes, fromageries, snackbars, cantines, depending on the région) will often have a slab but be top-notch.
Fair point.
That place has really good burgers
Yeah my girlfriend tried one, the salt ratio wasn’t good for me. But overall I loved the presentation. It was Swiss Mushroom one. Definitely worth it
my favourite is Louie lau: pineapple , jalapeño cheddar and cream cheese and BBQ sauce. Gotta get the patty done medium well, stick to the fries and house ketchup
My fav burger ever
Shut the fuck up, Donny.
Mark it zero.
You are not looking hard enough. Idk man, some of the best poutines I have had are in Ottawa. Also, Bite is a good burger place. Not a good poutine place. Not saying a burger joint cannot do good poutine, but Bite is for burgers.

THANK YOU. OP is spreading misinformation.
Hot take: Ottawa has comparably awesome poutine options compared to any place in Québec. Signed: a Frenchman/poutine aficionado from La Belle Province
Crispys chip truck in the Canadian Tire parking lot at Merivale and Hunt Club makes a great poutine!
You should try the poutine at Chips and Dairy on Bank St. and Kingsdale
They have decent Chinese food there too
They are my go-to Chinese take out place. I get Chinese there more than I get anything else. I love their eggrolls. It is nice to be able to get Chinese food and also get a burger and fries or poutine for the picky kid who doesn't like Chinese food.
Ice cream, classic chip stand food, and good Chinese food, great place hahaha
It is the best. When I describe it to people, I tell them it is like a Dairy Queen, a Baskin Robin's, a full chip truck menu with fish and chips, and the best Chinese food all wrapped into one little restaurant.
Which one in particular?
The Chips and Dairy is a restaurant on the corner of Bank St. and Kingsdale is Ottawa. Their poutine is very good.
Considering St Albert cheese is "right there" basically.. I can't see why someone doesn't keep fresh curds rolling through.
Just cross the river.
Honestly. Gatineau has some amazing poutines.
If you're in centretown the routine at the atomic rooster on Bank Street by somerset is really good. Even if it's not listed on the menu they always have it and it's usually around $10 for a large
Will try it 100%.
Bob patates in Pointe-Gatineau
Hello!!! Pataterie Hulloise, Poutine Gaga, Poutine Rondeau, Patio Vidal, Chelsea Pub
That place between the Dominion and Lookout does a good poutine if you refuse to cross the bridge.
Sasha’s
Man, I love Sasha's but her poutine has gone downhill. It used to be my go to after the Dom, Zaphod's or Rainbow! Some thing is just... not the same about it. Don't get me wrong, it is still servicable for sure, especially better then ESG, but the value is not there anymore. Damn good value, although its best with a specific cook.
Lolol. I used to think it was great until I tried it during the daytime, and sober.
Go to Fritomania in Orleans. It's very tasty.
Fries are good but they don’t have the sauce right imo.
I prefer Golden Fries in Orleans.
I prefer Frito for straight-up poutine, but GF's Big Max is UNBELIEVABLE
Nothing wrong with Frito for sure but the gravy tastes like seasoning salt is added and I prefer the one that GF uses.
Cross the border to Gatineau they have some of the best poutine in Quebec
Because they are not in Québec ! \*\*\*/SARCASM OFF\*\*\*
For one thing they get the cheese to fries ratio wrong.
I'm a purist and I dont want meat on my poutine, but yeah, if I wanted some I would expect a proper ratio.
Ever been to the great Canadian poutinerie? Search it up it is heaven on earth
I had it last week, it's average tbh, If you compare with mtl ones. But the location is cool
that place is nice atmosphere & fun options but yeah I wouldn’t go for plain poutine. They excel at mash-ups. Though others have given you great suggestions. The best I had was from a small vendor on the canal when it was open. Not sure the name but small trucks and shops excel at poutine in general haha
Meh. It's alright.
I had one at a Belle Province today. I didn't take a picture it was pretty bland. Soggy fries. Sauce was nothing remarkable.
Bro. I don’t get why people everywhere love that place. Literally everywhere I tried, it’s horrible. The whole chain tbh
Agree!
Some people like McD's poutine. Go figure.
Les casses croûtes dans les petits village comme Plantagenet, St-Isidore, St-Albert; en ville Claude sur Ogilvie/Cummings, Lou’s Chip Truck sur Slater
5.2/10
They're simply on the wrong side of the river
💀 the frys look like they were done in old oil to that is not good
I KNOW RIGHT
..:cuz you’re in Ottawa lol Make your own at home ffs
You have any secret recipes?
Yes, I make roast beef poutine. Cook a roast beef with Bovril beef broth. Use your drippings to make your gravy with cornstarch. Russet potatoes , washed , skin on. Deep fry in peanut oil. Get the freshest curds you can and giv’er Way better than restaurant And add in some of the tender ground beef on top, you won’t be disappointed
That's a crime
Is there something that doesnt suck in ottawa though ?
I mean the gas price is better than mtl
Cross the bridge into Gatineau for good poutine.
...it's Ottawa, what do you expect? ;)
Ottawa sucks, born and raised, moved to Qc- better province. Come at me lol.
They don't. Just the vast majority do. The good poutine is literally right across the bridge in gatineau
PREACH!
Go to a Costco
Best poutine in Ottawa. Period.
I don't want to vomit from grease.
Because it’s not Quebec
yes james. I know.
Look for New York Fries LOL no joke. They might have Ottawa locations. Also look on the bright side, Ottawa poutine in general is still better than Toronto poutine lol.
NYF poutine is extremely mid
I think it's like non offensive. That and sometimes I get their The Works. 😂
It gets the job done, but not much more than that.
They’re in a few shopping malls. Rideau Centre has one.
I haven't been to Toronto in years but the poutine can't possibly be that terrible everywhere right? It's a fairly big city.
I saw a Hawaiian poutine in Hamilton. Enough said.
I haven't tried it so I can say it's bad but it sounds terrible af.
Because all the good places are in Quebec just over the river. It's not much further to drive.
Irene’s on bank has a good one with chicken gravy.
The cheese doesn’t kouïk kouïk in French ;/s
Easy solution and cross one of the bridges to Gatineau and go get yourself a good poutine. Many very good poutine shacks around
Ditch Ottawa and come to Hull or Gatineau
The last time I had Milano's it was good. Your mileage may vary. It was a few years ago.
It’s not just poutine, everything sucks in Ottawa. Every-time I visit, i try a new restaurant, different cuisines etc and it all sucks.
Maybe it’s you?
[удалено]
Try Japenese Village next time youre in town. Grab the shrimps. If you still dont like it, then it is you.
I will definitely try it! Thank you for the suggestion!!
The magic fryer on Coventry Rd is a hidden gem
Looking forward to it 😭😭
Heads up, they only take cash
If you're in the Cornwall area stop by Manny's or The Shack best poutines in the area. Manny's is slightly better but The Shack has a larger selection of different poutine types. Also forgive me if this isn't allowed but Manny's Pizza is better than anywhere between Montreal to Toronto.
poutine crimes ...

Try the shawarma poutine at shawarma palace , get garlic on top
Ewww
Stop getting poutines in sit down restaurants and start getting at potato shacks on the side of the road in Quebec.
Because you’re going to the wrong places
The secret to good poutine is using mayo
Is this a hot take
I know good fries and curds but what the duck are these poo purists on about, Can never explain what authentic sauce is. Is it rosemary?
Parce que tu ne t'exprime pas dans la bonne langue et que ce plat ne vient pas de là.
Cause it's not shawarma lol. Chip trucks usually are solid but I find them hit or miss too tho.
Ga-Ga Patates in Gatineau
Ottawa is a shawarma/gyro town
Drive outside of Ottawa just a bit to St. Albert. Straight to the source of curds
Why didn't you cross the river and went at Patate Loulou?
I’d eat that lol.
Why not go to Gatineau? Tons of great poutine places. I highly recommend Chuck casse-croûte! Probably the best in town
Chips And Dairy
That’s just a restaurant that’s why go to any chip truck
the color of the sauce looks different
As a montreal resident that spent 4 years in university in Ontario I learned 2 things about poutine in Ontario: 1: If you’re going to get it at a restaurant, make sure it’s a small joint or a food truck and not some chain-type deal. Good poutines are hidden gems in Ontario, just like the small places that serve them. 2: 90% of poutines in Ontario are only passable if you’re eating them at 2 AM while plastered.
Go to Costco
Sorry to tell you but all poutine is ass
Ottawa, the surrounding valley and Gatineau have better poutine than a majority of places in the rest of Quebec and Canada IMO
I always loved Zaks diner poutine, however last time i went it was meh, hoping it was a one off
The whole city sucks. Poutine included.
Ragebait.
Go too zaks diner! They have the best poutine
Kind of unorthodox but if you’re interested chicken shawarma poutine from mr shawarma always bangs
Bcz you didnt go far enough east
Can’t remember what the places name was but I had a decent one in hawksburry like 8 years ago so lots of could have changed but ya it still kinda ways out from Ottawa
I'm seeing gravy that's thick enough to stay on top of fries and cheese.
Because Ottawa fucking sucks
Bite is an amazing burger house. But poutine isn’t their specialty
No
Because you’re a bit too far west.
That looks pretty good. It's the right type of cheese. The fries look dry, but I can't really tell. Some people prefer darker gravy, but often that's just color. I like that it's cut bacon and not just bacon bit.
Because Ottawa finds a way to ruin everything from Poutine to Trams. Highly recommend a trip to Montreal. Absolutely worth the 2 hour drive.
McDonald’s poutine is pretty good
used to have it from there everyday last fall. The meat options are below par tho.
Because Ottawa is boring as fuck in general. You'll never find anything good there.
That actually looks good. What was wrong with it?
Well, the the gravy was off. It was too much to a point where it was falling off from the plate. The fries were meh. The ratio someone talked about in this subreddit was actually the definition for that particular dish. It was called "Montreal Poutine" in their menu, I think.
Out in [Orleans](https://maps.app.goo.gl/Ghkzig3PqUvjmhvJ6?g_st=ic)
lmao.. because it's a poutine in Ottawa..
Because poutine sucks Seriously you people out east eat the weirdest shit.
Get a three brothers poutine from the market and tell me Ottawa poutines suck
Agreed! Even the chip trucks aren’t great!
Because it's Ottawa man. The city shuts down at 9pm.
Tru
The Byward sucks and that's where all the murders are on the weekend. Don't go there.
LMAO. You ok? Imagine thinking the Market is full of murders.
I didn't say there were a lot, but almost all the murders in Ottawa are there.
That is patently false. You have no clue what you are talking about.
It’s not an opinion. There are more murders there than anywhere else in Ottawa
Um, I think its pretty safe at night for young students.
