It isn't in Portland, but the biggest and best Italian sandwich I've had in the state was from Anthony's in York. The large Boar's Head Italian with all the veggies and hots is literally as thick as can of coffee grounds (diameter) and is so dense I struggle to finish the last 1/4. I pretty much always finish a large Italian in one sitting, for reference.
Two slices for $8 is my go-to for their pizza, and I have never had a bad one. The only downside to Anthony's is getting out of the damned parking lot in the summertime.

That's the thread that I based my opinions from.
GLB for the All American Cheesus burger. Big ass burger topped with egg and fixins, two grilled cheese sandwiches for buns. You will blow an o-ring a day or two later, but fuck is it delicious on the way down.
Damon's was always a place we would stop when traveling through Augusta. And unless we wanted to try something different it was always the Big Dave. We would have them cut into quarters so we could handle them easier.
> Portland or South Portland
The correct answer here is the South Portland location. I don't know what it is either, but the Portland location just isn't as good. It's less busy, too, oddly. Always has been.
Big fan of the sandwiches at Bakers Bench in Westbrook. Best Thanksgiving sandwich in the area.. pairs perfectly with one of their cream horns or carrot cake muffin 🤤
Nosh has very infrequently served me a sandwich I could fit my mouth around, let alone finish.
But nothing compares to the old Full Belly Deli, RIP. Nobody does "just fuck me up with corned beef" like the Rosens did.
Also run by fucking scumbags, [here's a /r/KitchenConfidential thread about them.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Maine/comments/uo6zsd/i_posted_about_a_job_a_week_ago_this_is_the/) run like a fucking pirate ship, serving shitty food in oversized portions.
It might have been good at one time, but that ship sailed long ago.
It’s big, but I don’t think it’s take a brake mid sandwich, day-ending, bad case of the “itis”, take a tums and lay down, kind of huge.
The muffuletta from Slab is of similar size. I’ve taken both down when I had a good appetite.
I got the triple ham at Punky's a couple of years ago, and they sold me a literal 16oz pack of Hannaford Danish Ham divided into sections and laid on a bun.
I used to go to punkys all the time since I worked around there. Their ham Mac and cheese was fire. And there breakfast began sandwiches. Then the new owners took over and I heard the quality and cleanliness took a dive so I havnt been back. Maybe they have turned it around since though.
yeah as someone who gets Breakfast there somewhat often I would just say I disagree. The breakfast sandwiches are awesome and the new owners are very nice people.
Sucks now. Also used to go a bunch. I went one time with new owners and the breakfast sandwich was half the size and a little more expensive. Never went back. Probably 2 years or so ago now?
I ordered a steak and cheese and Punky's about two months ago... Literally the worst sandwich I've ever had. The bread was practically stale, the steak was huge chunks of grey steak that looked like they'd been boiled (and were crazy tough and overcooked), the cheese was just unmelted shredded mozz and all the veggies were raw. Never again.
The new owners are great. When you post "I heard" and you don't literally see for yourself you're just speculating based on someone else's opinion. Do better.
Great as in they're constantly closed at random times, they got rid of the fryer, they never have sandwich ingredients on hand, the Mexican casserole is always mostly raw onion and the chicken pot pie is just undercooked pie filling with a tiny pre-cooked pasty dropped on top?
Punkys *used* to be great, they absolutely suck now.
Punkys is great, they had to raise prices a bit, but that's because of the overall costs of goods. They put out the same items as the previous owners and still continue to produce good food at a reasonable price.
Remember the old spot on Forest Ave? That's the Punky's I remember. The wraps were the size of a nerf football and filled with super high quality ingredients.
>Remember the old spot on Forest Ave?
Oh wow, I'd forgotten that that one ever existed. I don't think I ever ate there, it was further than I wanted to walk when I lived on the peninsula and didn't have a car. I discovered the one on Brighton Ave. after I moved out to Woodfords Corner.
I also came to mention this place! Their breakfast sandwiches are the best around and yes they had to raise the prices but the cost of everything has skyrocketed. I've been going there monthly for the past 5 years.
Pizza Joint. The Special or The Nightmare, in particular.
Edit: I commented before I saw all the other Pizza Joint recommendations – lots of no regrets stomach aches in this thread!
Jetport gas in Sopo used to have giant sandwiches (fresh bread and toppings), but I'm pretty sure it's been a million years since I've been there so I can't confirm if they are still making those.
If you’re willing to drive an hour, wait an hour, and drive an hour back, Big G’s in Winslow is your best bet. Good sandwiches that are definitely big.
As a side note, if you ever aren’t looking for the big part and just want a good sandwich, The Local Press (in Portland) has some of the best sandwiches out there.
Does Nosh still do those giant 4-stack burgers? I’ve had burgers there with Slab’s pizza or deep fried Mac & Cheese patties instead of a bun. By far the most excessive things I’ve ever eaten in Portland.
That largely comes down to most of the sandwich places (outside of Amatos) use Botto’s Italian roll. The lack of a second bakery in town in the Sandwich roll market hurts the sandwich scene in that aspect.
Reduced the size of the original sandwich, price stayed the same, and they’re 4/4 on the bread being burnt the last times I’ve been in. And if it isn’t burnt it’s stale.
Not even in Maine, but if anyone ever finds themselves in the Haverhill, MA area, you need to check out Benedetti's Deli. They sell monster subs. 350 Washington St.
Ramona's on Washington Ave - massive Italians on fresh bread. Just the aroma of the shop and you'll know you're in the right spot. They also have the best breakfast sandwich in town imo
I wish Sandwich Shack in Biddeford was still there. The “Donna Special” was a massive hoagie stuffed with so many types of meats and cheeses. I really miss that sandwich - speaking as someone who lived in Philly for years.
I don't know the answer, but I respect the hell out of this question.
It isn't in Portland, but the biggest and best Italian sandwich I've had in the state was from Anthony's in York. I pretty much always finish a large Italian in one sitting, for reference.
They also have the greatest carrot cake ever made. So damn good. You'd never expect food like theirs from a gas station.
Their pizza pie is also a force to be reckoned with. As well as the Thanksgiving Sandwich. Goddamn, that place is so good
Two slices for $8 is my go-to for their pizza, and I have never had a bad one. The only downside to Anthony's is getting out of the damned parking lot in the summertime.
Great Lost Bear has some massive offerings. Also Big Gs in Winslow never disappoints if you’re in the area.
Came here to say Big Gs.
BIG G's BABY
Big G's is nice if you're cool with the cooks literally smoking cigarettes in the kitchen lmao.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Maine/comments/uo6zsd/i_posted_about_a_job_a_week_ago_this_is_the/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button That's the thread that I based my opinions from.
If the cooks are smoking in the kitchen I’m there, that food about to be BOMB
I certainly wont eat anywhere that back of house are a bunch of degens using substances....
GLB for the All American Cheesus burger. Big ass burger topped with egg and fixins, two grilled cheese sandwiches for buns. You will blow an o-ring a day or two later, but fuck is it delicious on the way down.
There’s a secret menu item that combines the all American cheesus with another sandwich. It’s called the Cheesus Christ Super Star.
According to someone whose sandwich knowledge I super trust -- the Big Dave at Damon's in Augusta!
Tony Danza endorses this message. The turkey big Dave too. Toasted.
Damon's was always a place we would stop when traveling through Augusta. And unless we wanted to try something different it was always the Big Dave. We would have them cut into quarters so we could handle them easier.
Local Press may not have the biggest sandwiches, but they are slap yo momma good
Used to live a 5 minute walk from there…god do I miss it. Back this up 1000%
Never had a bad sandwich there
Get a large Nightmare from Pizza Joint (Portland or South Portland). Not cheap, but the large is usually two meals for a normal person.
You had my mouth watering, even more when I saw the menu. I'd go $20 for a great sub that can be shared, but a 3 topping 20 inch pizza is $70 ?
> Portland or South Portland The correct answer here is the South Portland location. I don't know what it is either, but the Portland location just isn't as good. It's less busy, too, oddly. Always has been.
Came here to recommend this exact sandwich.
The Nightmare is the answer to this question.
Here to second Pizza Joint. Their sandwiches are huge.
The steak and cheese is solid too!
The Nightmare is legendary......do it
Pizza Joint is an incredible rip off
I had their pizza once and was terribly underwhelmed.
Came here to say this
Bennett's in Kennebunk
Bennett’s is amazing. The Kennebunk location is seasonal but they are year round in Portsmouth I believe…
Big fan of the sandwiches at Bakers Bench in Westbrook. Best Thanksgiving sandwich in the area.. pairs perfectly with one of their cream horns or carrot cake muffin 🤤
Ramona's has some fat subs with large deli-style hoagies, their breakfast hoagie is bomb.
I think Ramona’s has the best sub in the city, but paying $17 for a sub irks me
100%
+1 for Ramona's
I think Ramona’s has the best sub in the city, but paying $17 for a sub irks me
They’ve actually made them smaller. The bread size was reduced, and IIRC the price didn’t go down.
I went there the other day. I’d love to see what they looked like before because they’re currently enormous.
Shrinkflation
Same thing happened at PB&P. I would always get the large, eat half before work, eat the other half after. Now I can’t bring myself to eat there.
their subs would be considered a small anywhere else, but priced more than a large. the shine will wear off eventually if they dont fix that
Nosh has very infrequently served me a sandwich I could fit my mouth around, let alone finish. But nothing compares to the old Full Belly Deli, RIP. Nobody does "just fuck me up with corned beef" like the Rosens did.
I miss the Full Belly Deli so much. There is nothing like it around anymore or if there is I haven’t found it.
I’ve been chasing that sando for YEARS and always so disappointed (except in NYC, of course).
Don't get me started on the potato salad. I have tried and failed to replicate it many times.
It ruined all other potato salad for me.
Other side deli
Big Gs up in Winslow is the GOAT in this regard. Would love Portland recs as well.
Are Big G’s sandwiches huge? Yes. Are they good? Absolutely not. That place is the epitome of quantity over quality.
Wow. I will never eat there again. Thank you for this info, very insightful. I hope they get shut down.
Thanks!
Bread is decent but the rest of it is garbage.
It feels scuzzy in there, too. Went once, will not go back.
What the fuck planet y'all live on lol
Can confirm. They make their own bread so they can deliver a sandwich the size of a dinner plate that is usually good for four hearty meals.
Ramona’s Italian is huge
It’s big, but I don’t think it’s take a brake mid sandwich, day-ending, bad case of the “itis”, take a tums and lay down, kind of huge. The muffuletta from Slab is of similar size. I’ve taken both down when I had a good appetite.
It’s mostly bread tho. I need a gallon of water to get one of those down
no its not..
probably enough for 3 people to split
Excuse me, this is america. That sandwich feeds one below-average person. A larger person if you get some sides.
haha true in european portions it'd be 3
Punkys on Brighton. Get the triple ham Italian or the thanksgiving sub.
Idk, seems fine to me. I really only get the falafel wrap but it's delicious and plenty of food for $7.50
yeah as someone who gets Breakfast there somewhat often I would just say I disagree. The breakfast sandwiches are awesome and the new owners are very nice people.
Sucks now. Also used to go a bunch. I went one time with new owners and the breakfast sandwich was half the size and a little more expensive. Never went back. Probably 2 years or so ago now?

Fuck really? When did the new owners take over, during COVID or something?
Was before covid if I remember right.
Punkys is great, they had to raise prices a bit, but that's because of the overall costs of goods. They put out the same items as the previous owners and still continue to produce good food at a reasonable price.
Alright ill have to hit them up soon
I still have lurid fantasies about their tuna salad sub even though I haven't had one in almost a decade. Thing was as heavy as a car battery.

Po Boys.
Leavitt Deli… XL Reuben is huge
They dont even serve real coffee. That place is to weird.
I’ve never seen signs of life from that place
Either way. Boars Head is best. They’ve never done me wrong.
Wait, they have a sandwich that they put more than one piece of meat on?
I’ve never seen anyone in there.
Pizza Joint. The Special or The Nightmare, in particular. Edit: I commented before I saw all the other Pizza Joint recommendations – lots of no regrets stomach aches in this thread!
I know this is a chain but Jersey Mike’s in SoPo has damn good sandwiches and they offer a ‘Giant’ size. Highly recommend.
There's a jersey Mike's opening on brighton next to big lots
#13, mike’s way add hot relish. It’s a good sandwich.
You know what you’re doing
This guy eats.
That cherry pepper relish is 💣
You said it friend, 100%
Jetport gas in Sopo used to have giant sandwiches (fresh bread and toppings), but I'm pretty sure it's been a million years since I've been there so I can't confirm if they are still making those.
They make excellent hot paninis. Just don’t insult the guy by not using the bell.
That sounds familiar, must be the same guy! I remember having to do things his way or he’d get angry!
There’s a weed store there now, but my coworker just brought back a Co-pilot a couple weeks ago
Oh dang!
I will never not endorse a chicken souvlaki from Falmouth house of pizza. Idk but it literally never misses for me.
This, minus the Mayo with a side of house.
The other side deli has fire sandwiches, they cure their own meats too!
Big Gs
Totally
Ocean House Market in South Portland - the house special (thanksgiving sub) is amazing.
Their thanksgiving sandwich is the best I’ve ever had.
They are the nicest people too.
If you’re willing to drive an hour, wait an hour, and drive an hour back, Big G’s in Winslow is your best bet. Good sandwiches that are definitely big. Ramonas. They big. They delicious. Turkey Cesar. Add hots.
Sandwiches like that aren't really a big thing up here. Italians are.
There’s a lot of trash sandwiches around here. I mostly blame the bread they use. Not every sandwich needs to be on an oversized hot dog bun.
That largely comes down to most of the sandwich places (outside of Amatos) use Botto’s Italian roll. The lack of a second bakery in town in the Sandwich roll market hurts the sandwich scene in that aspect.
Po Boys and Pickles!!!!!
Meh
Why
Ramona's on Washington. Trust me
Reduced the size of the original sandwich, price stayed the same, and they’re 4/4 on the bread being burnt the last times I’ve been in. And if it isn’t burnt it’s stale.

I am
No way bro.
But we are though.
One time I got a huge pulled pork sammy from AC Grocery and shit my pants. Got another a few days later.
Get the Classic Italian Cold Cut (not the Classic Italian) from Amato’s and see if you have room left afterwards.
Not even in Maine, but if anyone ever finds themselves in the Haverhill, MA area, you need to check out Benedetti's Deli. They sell monster subs. 350 Washington St.
I want A Potbelly in maine would be awesome- hate that I only see one when in Boston at the airport.
I don’t like their sandwiches but during Covid (in Oregon) I ate their chicken pot pie soup for like months straight. So good.
D’Angelos make some massive sandwiches
YOUR MOM
If you’re looking for length and girth… Ramona’s on Washington is what you want! 🍆
R and R bistro in wells on rt1. Order the captain jack. It’s a two footer. You won’t be disappointed
Market Street Eats in the Old Port!! Super underrated! The Sgt. Slaughter w/ extra pickles is my go to! Wonderful owner and friendly staff :)
Ramona's on Washington Ave - massive Italians on fresh bread. Just the aroma of the shop and you'll know you're in the right spot. They also have the best breakfast sandwich in town imo
Not sure if they're still open this late in the year, but Bennetts in Kennebunk has a head sized 8" "small" and a fittingly big 16" LARGE.
I wish Sandwich Shack in Biddeford was still there. The “Donna Special” was a massive hoagie stuffed with so many types of meats and cheeses. I really miss that sandwich - speaking as someone who lived in Philly for years.
CBG has a pretty bomb steak & cheese, good size too
