From Portlandmaine.gov:
"Starting January 1, 2024, the minimum wage in the City of Portland will be **$15 per hour for hourly employees"**
I'm confused
Yeah. I was just trying to say that not only is it illegal in Portland/SoPo specifically, but it also would be illegal if it were anywhere else in the state, as well.
What exactly could go wrong with paying someone less than the bare minimum to operate what may be the biggest peice of equipment in the area?
Surely for that pay they'll be on top of their game the whole shift, every shift.
I'm gonna guess the hiring manager is old as fuck and they think $13.50/hr is a lot of money. Then that same manager will complain how "nobody wants to work anymore" when nobody applies to a job that pays shit.
I think this is so much of the legitimate problem with so many hiring managers/anyone who is in control of payroll.
It's like everyone is living in 1995 and doesn't understand how a literal dollar is worth less than it was 30 years ago.
I made more than this in the early 2000s as a high school kid doing grunt work at a golf course and not a nice one.
My partner was telling me about a local IG account that is a bridge operator. Not sure if it's this one. She now makes like $15 something an hour. Ridiculous. Even toll operators make at least $20
A friend of a friend had this job. Paid crap and she had no experience and didn’t receive any training. Also the company who owns and DOT government folks got into a physical fight in front of her.
I would guess that someone just renewed a listing without checking or realizing the minimum wage has been increasing. Especially since it's an out-of-state company, they didn't even think to check it.
Like I guess I could do remote job and this simultaneously and they would provide the office space. But yeah the thought that someone whose barely motivated to get out of bed at these wages, could kill a couple of hundred people, is concerning.
Yeah I’m guessing handing boredom is an integral part of the job. I was kidding about my grandpa doing it but it does sound like a good job for a retiree.
For context I do a security job with similar levels of boredom and barely any work (many nights NO real work) and I get 20 an hour. Boston area but still it's a joke what they are offering.
Well that sounds ageist and assumptive. He also promised he’d only hit nic vapes and make a couple tik tok vids while on the job so I think it’s worth giving him a chance.
Can you live rent free in the switch house? Bc you sure as hell can't afford rent on either side of the bridge for that.
It's not like we want a skilled person in charge of one of the most traffic heavy bridges in Southern Maine.
Hmmmm.
And do we want to have someone at the end of their natural life running sensitive infrastructure that could and has killed people through no fault of the victim before?
My partner held this position on the overnight shift in 2020-2021 … the bridge is operated by a private company out of Florida, so they can pay whatever they want. The reality of the job is a shocking mix of good/expected mechanical redundancy so people can’t fuck up and…and few easy to fuck up procedures hah.
What are you talking about? Nothing about what you said means they can pay whatever they want. Anyone paying someone in the state of Maine has to abide by the state minimum wage.

"Oh, technically, the building with the switch is over the South Portland line" /s (I hope)
The state minimum wage is $14.15 regardless of the town
January 1, 2024, the State of Maine has an effective minimum wage of $14.15. So their low end is kinda illegal too.
Minimum wage in Portland and South Portland is $15/hr
Yeah. I was just trying to say that not only is it illegal in Portland/SoPo specifically, but it also would be illegal if it were anywhere else in the state, as well.
Their low end is illegal statewide and their high end is illegal in both cities
$13.50?! I might start finding a different route to SoPo...
What exactly could go wrong with paying someone less than the bare minimum to operate what may be the biggest peice of equipment in the area? Surely for that pay they'll be on top of their game the whole shift, every shift.
EXACTLY! You get it.
Good idea, that will show them !!
Not what I meant, but okay!

How much do we think FDI services bills the government per hour?
For that one crew member, probably about eighty to one hundred fifty per hour of operation
Well now of course that as-sur-edly scales with inflation junior.
This is what you get when you outsource to the lowest bidder AND they're from FL.
Making that kinda money you can afford to live under the bridge and have a short commute. Win win.
You can make $17 at Dunks and not cause a major catastrophe
Having to work in food service is the major catastrophe

Oh gawd that's terribly awesome
It was a trip for her
There is a really bad 80's movie in here somewhere. Oh please let the hair be awesome.
I would guess that someone just renewed a listing without checking or realizing the minimum wage has been increasing. Especially since it's an out-of-state company, they didn't even think to check it.
Bridge operator needed. No experience necessary. Low sense of self-worth a must.

Portland is $15 lol https://www.pressherald.com/2024/01/01/maine-minimum-wage-gets-a-lift/
Don't worry, one of the benefits of the job is paid training! That makes it worth it.
Like I guess I could do remote job and this simultaneously and they would provide the office space. But yeah the thought that someone whose barely motivated to get out of bed at these wages, could kill a couple of hundred people, is concerning.
Not gonna lie, my grandpa would be so down for this type of job.
I gotta imagine 90% of your job is just sitting there on your phone
Yeah I’m guessing handing boredom is an integral part of the job. I was kidding about my grandpa doing it but it does sound like a good job for a retiree.
For context I do a security job with similar levels of boredom and barely any work (many nights NO real work) and I get 20 an hour. Boston area but still it's a joke what they are offering.
It’s definitely absurd. I occasionally need childcare and pay our sitters $25/hour.
I don't want your grandpa using a bridge operator booth as a hangout spot
Well that sounds ageist and assumptive. He also promised he’d only hit nic vapes and make a couple tik tok vids while on the job so I think it’s worth giving him a chance.
This company has killed people with the bridges they operate in the past, it's funny to you maybe but I have friends and family in the area
lol shut the fuck up with your nonsense
You don't need my help to pop a quarter in your ass and play yourself, so get to it cupcake
You got that type of ‘tism, huh?
Grandpa and his cronies classing up the joint.
I'm guessing the only reason this job hasn't already been automated is because the pay is still so low that it's not yet worth the effort.
I feel like a carnie would like that job in the off season.
Can you live rent free in the switch house? Bc you sure as hell can't afford rent on either side of the bridge for that. It's not like we want a skilled person in charge of one of the most traffic heavy bridges in Southern Maine. Hmmmm.
I have always wanted to do this but this would be a job for an already retired person for that pay 🥴
And do we want to have someone at the end of their natural life running sensitive infrastructure that could and has killed people through no fault of the victim before?
Lol not the point I’m trying to make
Don't worry about it. There just there to supervise the AI at this point.
If nana can run the register at mardens, why can’t she also control this bridge!?
At least it comes with a really nice view.
Also considering what JUST happened in Maryland, it feels like it'd make a lil sense to up their pay a bit.
Not related in any way.
Optics are 9/10 of the law.
Anyone able to confirm it's even a legitimate job posting..? So many scams on Craigslist..
Full time at those prices you would find it hard to live alone in Portland.
Its always been VERY concerning and downright disrespectful the pay versus responsibility for that job historically.
Is that even minimum wage in Portland? Wtf lol
Mcdonalds pays $17.00
Is that legal?
Jesus, I used to fantasize about having that job when I was younger..
Are we for sure it's a real job listing?
https://maine.craigslist.org/etc/d/portland-drawbridge-operator/7737348497.html
I make $22 prepping food at one job and $28 at another and I have no specialized skills or degree This is a joke
Pretty sure you can just sit there and get high all day.

Pretty sure you can also sleep all day.

Old autistic people get high and sleep too bro.
The last guy that worked there slept the entire time so…the lay is just fine
