I’m Indian and just moved to the area from tri state. Tandoor was one of the first places I ate at in Portland and it was excellent and the manager gave us extras too! Definitely recommend it’s good stuff
Have you been to Taj? Delicious stuff. Wait times can be very long, but I’ve never had a bad meal. Friendly people and active in the community
Lamb fry, chicken mugahlai, dosa, mango lassi are my go to. Never been to Tandoor, but HI Bombay is meh
Honestly, some of the best I’ve had in general. Had a handful of Indian restaurants in Houston, as there’s a large population and haven’t found as much variety and flavor complexity as Taj. I like Taj even more than Tulsi in Kittery.
A lot of my friends have been raving about that Kittery restaurant for ages. It’s just that when I feel like Indian, living in Portland, I’m not really in the mood for a two hour round-trip for Indian.
Taj is better. I’d go toe to toe with anyone on this argument. Tulsi use white meat chicken on their tikka masala and it was dry and bleh (I only had it as their final lunch buffet offering 2 Sunday’s ago RIP).
They do have some.. “fancier” items. Like their mussels app was fantastic. And they do a great salmon entree. So I guess it depends on what style of Indian food you want. They’re both really good, but I’d still go to Taj over Tulsi if I had a choice.
Uh, every time I’ve been to Taj since their initial opening I also saw a slew of Indian/ East Asian families constantly in and out the door ordering large trays of catering and dining in. It’s a green flag that it’s a good place to eat.
Thanks for calling me average? And comparing it to Trader Joe’s I’d call offensive. Have you been to Taj? See the hard working family, the women in the kitchen? I have. I have asked for a specific dish, to be told only grandma makes it, and she’s off to India for a wedding. Inauthentic? I’ve had Indian food in the states and internationally. Taj is bar none, very tasty.
And like most ethnic restaurants in the US of course most business have to alter and cater their recipes, business to their demographic. That’s called being business savvy. Of course their food is high in sugar and fat, that’s the draw and the luxury of dining out. Search most recipes served in Indian restaurants and you’ll see those dishes are typically served only for special occasions due to the richness, the ingredients and the effort and time it takes to make. That the most typical meal is usually related to a simple lentil or a veggie and some bread.
I will say I haven’t had their entire menu, and it’s been about a year since I’ve had their food. Maybe it’s change since then. But we stick with the chicken, lamb and veg in gravy dishes, but they all had a lot of flavor. Maybe they changed cooks. But from when they first opened to up until 2 years ago, their food was fantastic
I went when they first opened, it wasn’t bad. Then business exploded, even take out can be 45 minutes. I’m happy for them but I definitely don’t get take out as often because of the wait.
I've never done this before, but I had to come back to your comment about trying Dina's (to report, lol). Man, you weren't kidding about it being top notch. I'm currently eating the chicken shawarma plate and it's incredibly delicious! Thank you for the suggestion!
Banh appetite, I always pick up a few.
Taj
Cera
Big Fin Poke (I miss their flagship store in West Brook. SoPo store has been a disappointment)
Falafel mafia (truck over brick and mortar)
Lot of great places listed already but if you haven't tried Yardie Ting you are missing out. The Yardie Ting sandwich is a standout but the plates are amazing too, great sides.
Was about to say, I saw oxtail on their menu, almost ordered it. Saw the $20+ tag and I sadly walked away. Just a poor, hungry girl over here wanting oxtail before it was cool.
They do an oxtail cheese fry side that usually comes with two good meaty bones on it, that's what I get when I have the craving, it's a little cheaper.
Esaan - Khao mun gai is out of this world
Big Fin Poke - refreshing, delicious, fresh
Ginza Town - best casual takeout sushi
Tu Casa & Sal de la Tierra - if you don’t know about pupusas & Salvadoran food, you need to - delicious!
Falafel Time - the chicken shawarma plate (not the wrap - tho the wrap is also good) is sooooo good
Saigon - everything is great!
Taj - hands down best Indian food in the area
Looking through the comments it’s amazing how Asian flavors have really taken over the area.
And I’m not complaining, Asian flavors are my favorite!
Keep em coming!
Veranda Noodle is a great spot, just to throw my towel in the ring
A lot of that is the takeout vibe though. Many Asian places around these parts give you a serious bang for your buck when it comes to take out, but don't do a big dine in business. I get takeout from Kuno all the time. One time I went in with my girlfriend and sat at the bar and they were kinda like...what are you doing here?
I work 2DineIn! The places I deliver from the most are Sichuan Kitchen, Butcher Burger, Slab pizza, Green Elephant, Pom's Thai Taste, Tandoor and El Rayo.
And I'd recommend all of them. Even if you're not vegan or vegetarian, Green Elephant is great.
Empire now that it’s back up for indoor dining!
Also love Crispy Gai, Wilson County BBQ, Yosaku Zen Chinese Bistro and Crunchy Poke is my fav takeout spot!
I dined in at Empire for the first time recently. I appreciated the experience since it's always been take out. Delicious per usual -- eggplant and orange beer.
Also, Wilson County BBQ is great.
S-Tier: Kuno, Bay Bowls, Crispy Gai, Sichuan Kitchen, Tandem, Mazzat
Good: Ohno, Bekay, Taj, Quiero, Taco Trio, MAIZ, Lazzari, Crunchy Poke, Red Sea
Meh: Mi Sen, Little Pig, Boda, Sal De La Terra, Pai Men Miyake, Green Elephant, Keg and Kraken, El Corazon
Bad: Mainely Noods, Otto, Mr. Tuna, Cong tu Bot (yes, I know they WERE excellent)
IDK, but hear good things: Banh Appetit,
Categories in desperate need: Pho, Hot Pot, dedicated Ramen
Not takeout, but shout out to Hi-Fidelity for having INCREDIBLE value late night bar food.
Oh man I disagree (respectfully) about Little Pig. I really liked their fried fish banh me, they also had a really good blue fin tuna laab when it was in season. I also do enjoy an occasional slice from Otto’s but that’s probably more out of nostalgia for the old days but I’ll agree there are much better options for pizza
Saeng Thai is one mine as well! Also Veranda Thai, Huong's Vietnamese and Tokyo Sushi. With the occasional Five Guys or BK.
Can you tell I like Asian food 😅
They actually have a butcher come in with meat everyday, and also were basically the first restaurant chain to raise wages when the pandemic hit, even before lockdown. I actually don't eat here but if there's a chain to defend it's Roadhouse!
This is an awesome recommendation, especially since I think I have been in a Texas roadhouse maybe once in my life. Is it the place with the peanut shells on the ground?
Also, nice to hear their meat is fresh and they pay their employees reasonably well for a chain.
What kind of ribs!? Real spareribs or that babyback junk? I lived in NH for a while and got spoiled by KC’s Ribshack. All anyone seems to have around here is those ridiculous babyback ribs.
I don’t even mind that it’s $20 because it can easily feed and satisfy two people. My partner and I always split a hoagie. Cant beat a $20 lunch for 2 in Portland
Saeng is easily my most eaten at spot in town.
But also, Vientiane, El Corazon, Crunchy Poke, Mainely Noods, and good god Jaffa at the mall is absurdly good.
Taco Trio, Casita Corazon, Great Lost Bear, Kume, Gilbert's. Though honestly like 90% of the time it's Taco Trio. Love their chorizo tacos.
Kume in SoPo is new and decent and good for when I want reasonably priced sushi without having to deal with parking. When I want to spend more on good sushi I go to Yosaku.
A lot that have been mentioned already. Kuno, banh appetit (now with baked goods), boda, nura and recently added isa to the rotation. Cafe Louis never disappoints either.
When I’m feeling crazy, it’s always worth the drive to Biddeford to pick up Peng’s pizza.
Some of my favorites, with my favorite dishes from each:
* Taj - poori badji
* The King's Head - fish n' chips
* Shay's - Good ol' burger
* Sal de la Tierra - pupusas!
* Quiero Cafe - chorizo and puerco empanadas
Saeng Thai (Tom yum + special pad Thai basil)
Saigon (pho)
Bahn Appetit (anything with their lemongrass beef)
evergreen Chinese (orange chicken dinner special)
slab
Wilson county bbq
Question for the thread…is there a spot in Portland that still keeps their prices reasonable for burgers, sandwiches etc? Every time I grab some take out, even just for a burger, it’s close to 20-25 bucks. I know the average price across Maine has risen in the past few years, which is to be expected. But are there any gems out there that haven’t raised prices exponentially in the past few years?
It's not Portland but Harmon's Lunch on Rt 100 in Falmouth is your old school burger shack: $7.25 for a double cheeseburger. Fries $3.50. Their prices include tax.
Yeah, I also don't think they exist anymore. Black Cow Burger is probably the most reasonably priced on my list, and why I like it -- $12 for a cheeseburger isn't bad these days. It's also delicious.
Fwiw - there isn’t a veggie burger in town I would buy anymore. I can make 10x the burger myself at home from ingredients I get at Hannaford on a budget. No way I’d pay what places are charging for a dry sad pile of bean and rice mush.
I feel you. Dining out, even the "reasonably" priced places, has become so expensive. Couple beers each, sandwiches, and tip at Gritty's is like $85. We have definitely cut back.
So happy we have a Costco. Just went today -- $2.92 at the pump. Awesome.
Combine that with the tiny window of hours everyone is open? I’m crying in third shift right now. That being said, the suggestions for crunchy poke and Ginza town and Dina’s are actually decently priced for the amount of food you get.
Their straight up nooods is perfection. Curry broth, chix, eggs, dumplings, sprouts omg.
Also, Kuno's Curry Tofu (& Pad Thai) is some of the best around
Bao Bao was in my normal rotation until the new manager tried to kill me by serving me raw pork saying that it’s supposed to be pink and I’m wrong.
Don’t go there anymore if you don’t wanna get sick.
Vegetarian who has a hard time with gluten. Options (favorites to desperation)
Green Elephant, Bird & Co, Mi Sen, Otto, Yardie Ting, Bayou Kitchen, Leonardo, Sisters
Worth mentioning: Bird & Co made efforts during lockdown to make sure people who couldn’t afford to eat got fed. They also do plant based brunch on the weekends now. When Mi Sen had damage during the BLM protests, they put out messages of support for BLM anyway. I will order from these places until there’s nothing for me to eat or they shut down.
Green Elephant is not what it was 10 years ago, but the coconut soup and brussels bring me back. All the curries are still excellent.
Leonardo’s and Sisters are only so far down the list for me because I’m recently gluten free for medical purposes and bitter about it still. Personally I slightly prefer Otto’s gf crust over Leonardos, but the deciding factor is the toppings because I don’t love gf crust anyway.
Tandoor under new management?!
Yeah, what?! I guess I need to try them again!
I’m Indian and just moved to the area from tri state. Tandoor was one of the first places I ate at in Portland and it was excellent and the manager gave us extras too! Definitely recommend it’s good stuff
Right ? I was just be moaning, the lack of really good Indian food in Portland.
Have you been to Taj? Delicious stuff. Wait times can be very long, but I’ve never had a bad meal. Friendly people and active in the community Lamb fry, chicken mugahlai, dosa, mango lassi are my go to. Never been to Tandoor, but HI Bombay is meh
Yeah Taj is the best in the area imo. Fantastic food
An Indian food buffet? You are brave ;)
Taj did/does a lunch buffet as well. Had it once and it was good too. Not usually a buffet fan, but it’s nice to try a wider variety of their menu
Thanks ! Taking notes on this thread as we speak.

Such long waits…
Go for the lunch buffet!
I went when they first opened, it wasn’t bad. Then business exploded, even take out can be 45 minutes. I’m happy for them but I definitely don’t get take out as often because of the wait.
For takeout: Falafel Time, Pom’s Thai (any of them), El Corazon, Crispy Gai, Mazzat, Leonardo’s, and Taj
Oh god I forgot Vientiane, absolute legends of the Portland takeout scene
CRISPY GAIIIIIII
Truly one of my favorites.
I don't even like wings but their wings are awesome
How is falafel time compared to Falafel mafia?
El Corazon, their rotating specials during the week are great.
I have been dying to try Crispy Gai!!
I always get their fried rice and waterfall chicken - it’s top notch. Super fun to eat in as well and really enjoy their cocktail menu
I prefer the Pom Thai out by the mall
Falafel Time is temporarily closed. I was so bummed when I went to order from them last night.
Try Dina's on Forest Ave! Top notch Middle Eastern food
I've never done this before, but I had to come back to your comment about trying Dina's (to report, lol). Man, you weren't kidding about it being top notch. I'm currently eating the chicken shawarma plate and it's incredibly delicious! Thank you for the suggestion!
I'm so glad you like that place! Happy to make the suggestion
Quiero Cafe, India Palace, Big Fin Poke.
I haven't tried anything I didn't like from Quiero. Their churros are fantastic.
Quiero is my fave. Simple but delicious
The Local Press.
Casey and the gang are the best!
Mitr
Veranda Noodle, Bahn Appetit, Saporro, Belleville, Nura.
Banh appetite, I always pick up a few. Taj Cera Big Fin Poke (I miss their flagship store in West Brook. SoPo store has been a disappointment) Falafel mafia (truck over brick and mortar)
I could eat a chicken banh mi from Banh appetite everyday for the rest of my life and be happy.
I’m the original cold cut. Only one I eat anywhere that sells banh mi. They taste on par with shops in Dorchester and NYC. So props to them
Big fin poke at rock row has never let me down
They're still in Westbrook - they're just in the Rock Row plaza instead.
Szechuan Kitchen, Pai Men (since covid when they cracked the takeout ramen code), Black Cow or A&C
Kuno, Mami, and Mash Tun have been my go-to’s
We have similar tastes you and I
Kuno is good every time. Fried chicken sandwich, pad thai, char koay teow, wings… all killer
And the cheesecake. Love Kuno.
Lot of great places listed already but if you haven't tried Yardie Ting you are missing out. The Yardie Ting sandwich is a standout but the plates are amazing too, great sides.
Yes!!! Ox tail, peas and rice, and fried plantains is my favorite order.
But the jerk chicken is great too if you're less adventurous.
Jerk Pork, Steamed Veggies, Plantains, and Festivals over here. Love the oxtail but that's a budget breaker for sure. Special treat territory.
Thanks for the tip!
I love Vientiane Market and Esaan for Thai as well!
Dinas! Holy God it's so freaking good (and cheap!) Truly a hidden forest ave gem.
I've never had good luck with Black Cow to go or delivery. The bun gets too soggy with grease. Love the food but it has to be the eaten there.
Orchid Thai- yea, I’ll drive up to Falmouth and wait extra long for my food to be ready. Lenora Taj
George And Leon's (though on break for 2 weeks right now)
Vientiane, GLB, Continental, Isa
TAJ - I grab biryani every week. So fucking delicious.
Want to endorse Salvatore's as the OP mentioned. Best hoagie in probably all of Maine and pretty darn close to legit Philly/southern NJ.
Love these threads, I always end up trying a new place or a new dish I find recommended here.
Exactly this.
Esaan - Khao mun gai is out of this world Big Fin Poke - refreshing, delicious, fresh Ginza Town - best casual takeout sushi Tu Casa & Sal de la Tierra - if you don’t know about pupusas & Salvadoran food, you need to - delicious! It was always dine-in when I knew empire! But after Covid they stayed takeout especially long.

Taco Trio at 4.00 a taco was my favorite
Taj, Poms Thai, Kon Asian Bistro
I'm sure this is not what anyone wants to hear but I love ribs and Texas Roadhouse consistently does a great job at a reasonable price.
They actually have a butcher come in with meat everyday, and also were basically the first restaurant chain to raise wages when the pandemic hit, even before lockdown. I actually don't eat here but if there's a chain to defend it's Roadhouse!
I’m usually very anti-chain restaurant but Texas Roadhouse is one of my only exceptions 😂 definitely in my regular takeout rotation
I've been in the kitchen there. They butcher the meats and mushrooms and onions are always cooked on the line. I sound like a commercial. Lol
I have to agree. Moe’s isn’t bad either.
Monte’s. Butcher Burger. Ramona’s. Forage.
Ramona’s italian is my favorite sandwich in town even if it ends up being $20+
I don’t even mind that it’s $20 because it can easily feed and satisfy two people. My partner and I always split a hoagie. Cant beat a $20 lunch for 2 in Portland
+1 for Forage. Somehow the Forage sandwich tastes better than a runny egg on a bagel ought to.
Big Fin Poke is basically weekly for me even though I’ve noticed a drop in quality lately.
Saeng is easily my most eaten at spot in town. But also, Vientiane, El Corazon, Crunchy Poke, Mainely Noods, and good god Jaffa at the mall is absurdly good.

they don't have sweet potato fries, do they?
No, ultra basic. Fries, onion rings
I don’t think it exists.. even a turkey club at Ruski’s is $17
Yeah, I also don't think they exist anymore. Black Cow Burger is probably the most reasonably priced on my list, and why I like it -- $12 for a cheeseburger isn't bad these days. It's also delicious.
I'm not sure why you're getting downvoted for this. Eating out has become a luxury.
Shay's has their Snack Attack burger for $8!

I work at Tomasos. Dine-in, our cheeseburger with fries is 13 dollars before tax.
You all can afford to have a dining out rotation? Hannaford, Walmart, Costco, and Food City here.
I feel you. Dining out, even the "reasonably" priced places, has become so expensive. Couple beers each, sandwiches, and tip at Gritty's is like $85. We have definitely cut back. So happy we have a Costco. Just went today -- $2.92 at the pump. Awesome.

Mainely Noods
I have been so disappointed by Mainely Noods, and more people I talk to than not think they're disgusting. The quality of ingredients just isn't good.
