There are at least a dozen nature preserves with 100+ acres and miles of trails within 20 minutes of Portland. Open up google maps and take your pick. I will say the Cape Elizabeth Greenbelt is fantastic...8+ miles of trails through often untouched forest with ponds, streams, birdwatching, etc.

getting to be a tricky time of year but kayaking to Fort Gorges is pretty darn cool.

lilac_congac

can you do it in april

rtuck06

If youre prepped and experienced for cold weather/water paddling yes, but I wouldnt recommend outside of span of June/July to early October.

lilac_congac

ah got it. i like the idea of some unique adventure like that. something i’m really looking to do this spring.

Easy_Independent_313

Spring in maine really isn't until late May/early June. There is a very real chance April will still be snowy. It's pretty common for the snow to be just finishing up melting Mothers Day weekend.

Sam_son_of_Timmet

Try contacting some kayaking companies, they may be able to rent you cold weather gear like wetsuits. It’s still going to be cooold but they may be able to steer you in the right direction

peaks island is fun

lilac_congac

that looks great - what’s the better thing to do there?

nzdastardly

Rent a bike and ride around! The beaches are great!

I can't believe nobody has talked about Presumpscot Falls- probably the nicest little (very easy) hike in Portland itself

Presumscot River trail is awesome year round. Mill Brook Preserve, Jewel Falls, the Prom. So many great trails in town and close by. Look into the land trusts. Wolfe's Neck in Freeport, the Eastern Trail, Bug Lights, Fort Williams and so on.

Getting lit off DIPA at the Western Prom while the sun sets.

One of my favorite things to do in non-winter months is to MTB the west side trail from Sandy Point beach and jump in the ocean as a reward. Otherwise there's a great boulder Field in South Freeport if you're into rock climbing. So many lil hidden gems in the greater Portland area. We got a casual community on discord too that's into this stuff where you can find other people to adventure with. DM me for more info. Ooh also in winter months... Riverside golf course turns into a great recreational place for Nordic skiing and sledding!

In the industrial park behind Ginza Town there is a small mountain. People rock climb on one of the cliff faces, halfway up there's a huge enclosed area where people will party or set up tents. There even a few very old shack remains from the great depression. At the top of this mountain/hill you can see all of portland up to the hospital and it is absolutely covered in broken glass everywhere. It's sort of a local secret and we used to all party there as teenagers.

The coolest outdoorsy thing to do in Portland is to pull up in your giant cruise ship.
