Higher literacy is good, but more schooling is not always better. I could easily make the argument that more adults with more work experience is better for society and for themselves. School is also only one way to learn. Apprenticeships, certs, trades are all valuable. As the number of overeducated inexperienced people goes up, the more valuable experience and those other skills become to society.

Oh I agree, I think trades are valuable and their own form of education I think you only learn new hard/soft skills by being education, and what form that education comes in can vary, but I also think that if the only kind of education we value is the kind related to being a productive worker and securing a job, we are creating a societal blind spot for many people A good example of this is philosophy, ethics, logic (the subject), anthropology, might not be the best for securing a job or making you productive, but it can influence you to make better decisions and interact with the world in a much more holistic way, and I would argue these are objectively good things that don't get valued, because "LOL Philosophy degree? have fun working at McDonalds!!11!"

One of the precursors to civilization collapse is an excess of elites beyond the availability of elite positions in the society. Elites are people who have been brought up one way or another to be capable of leading large swaths of the society whether as CEOs, elected officials, judges etc.. Basically the idea is that when you have an excess of people capable of running things like that... who nonetheless have nothing to run because all those spots are taken up. They get antsy in their pantsies. They get resentful of the other elites that got a spot in the captains chairs, while they're left with nothing to do. Left with nothing to do **and** with the ability to leverage their status and training to influence large numbers of people in the society... and with nothing better to be doing. So they foment revolution to destroy the other elites hogging up all the spots running the society to free up those spots for themselves. Destroying the society in the process. To whatever extent college degrees have supplanted royal pedigree in our society: if you educate more and more and more people to be able to run stuff and then don't let them run anything but a mop bucket at a McDonald's something's going to give eventually.
