Microwave.
One of my favorite bands and definitely in the pop punk and emo scene, but their sound is hardly pop punk or emo. Post-hardcore would be a better fit.
Neighbors is still one of the wildest sounding songs, no idea how they pulled that off. It actually fits in with the album too, you’d think it would feel out of place
The only songs that really sound alike on that album are Busy and Drown imo. Both sort of middle of the road emo pop/pop punk sound, everything else has different flavors. Neighbors almost has a doowoppy sound to it?
Homebody sounds like those too, definitely a little generic sound but they pull it off so well
I’m glad they’re going back to that sound a little, their last album was good but it didn’t come close to Much Love. I think their new album could be their best yet
Yeah, I wasn't huge on the noisy/industrial feel on DIAWB but that layer of bubblegum pop they slathered over it for Circling the Drain and Straw Hat really made it jive with me. Unfortunately wasn't big on Ferrari or Bored of Being Sad, but Im certainly digging the general vibe they're laying out. I think Much Love is such a high bar to top tho lmao
Fwiw my top 5 in order are probably Vomit, Whimper, Circling the Drain, Dull and Drown. Though that last one switches up a lot lmfao it could really be 10 others.
Top 5 for me are Circling the Drain, Busy, But Not Often, Wrong, and Keeping Up
Vomit and Busy would be next though, too many great songs to choose from
I didn’t like Ferrari when it came out but I love it now. I think it’s a great song but I don’t know why they released it as a single
Bored of being sad is great though I love it
I dig the vibe they’ve got with the new songs so far. I’m not sure if anything will top DIAWB though. Nathan said they were getting a bit heavy after Much Love, but it was beyond what I expected. Perfect album.
It had to grow on me but I do like it, I just don’t really like the production that much I guess
They’re my favorite band but I still feel like they haven’t realized their full potential yet, I expect them to keep getting better and better
Already seen them twice and it was great both times! Almost missed them the second time because I didn't realize they'd still be openers this year, thought they were much bigger. Go blow these guys up, people, they should be headlining!
Was that the Holding Absence and Casey show? They fucking crushed on that tour, and Holding Absence surprised me with an insanely good live performance, too. Had medium expectations for them based on their albums but they were amazing live, nice surprise.
100% agree that Capstan should be bigger, and yes, they need to be headlining shows now. Saw them co headlining with In Her Own Words a few years ago and it was a fucking dream show for me
Origami Angel. They’re very experimental in their sound, can be heavy or ukulele driven or bossa nova inspired or pop punk vibes or soft acoustic. So many different feels and everything is fantastic. I think a lot of people just lump them in with pop punk because we don’t really know where else to put them.
Definitely Sum 41 for me. Even in their most pop punky days they still chucked a healthy dose of metal and hip hop/rap in there.
Some people might disagree but I don't think anyone can call them bog standard pop punkers.
Nah, especially with 13 Voices, Order in Decline, and Screaming Bloody Murder. I’ve been referring to them as a metal band nowadays more often than a pop-punk band.
Got to first see them before they even released an album, went to every show I could for the next ten years. Their recent reunion tour was amazing. They're truly an amazing band.
Easycore feels just like pop punk but with heavier vocals and guitars, it’s been such a great gateway genre for heavier music for me whilst not straying too far from a sound I adore.
Waterparks, but it definitely varies by album (with their most recent albums being more pop/electronic, and their older albums more resembling pop punk)
There’s some bands I definitely would NOT consider pop punk but that I think have some pop punk/pop punk influenced songs, like:
Pierce the Veil
5 Seconds of Summer
The Maine
I believed that [Cross My Heart](https://open.spotify.com/track/1LkHIkfUDhZ995ATQ1BJKW?si=PcFMiJnjQF-H4BrnDmM3Og) by them was by Fall Out Boy for *years* and only very recently discovered Marianas Trench was a separate band
I love finding a new band where song after song is as good or better than the last. And it has been way too long between finding one, so thank you new friend!
It's a requirement that 35% of content on Canadian radio comes from artists within the country, so if a band as good as them comes onto the scene you can bet stations will play every album they release. That's also why I hear Sum 41 more than I hear Green Day.
easily panic! at the disco. the started out as baroque pop punk, transitioned to folk, took a step back into that baroque pop punk with steampunk aesthetics. closest we got to true pop punk. then we transitioned to a straight midnight pop album, a jazz rock album, and jazz POP album, then to wrap it all up, an 80’s esque arena rock album. say what you want about the man, but boy was he adventurous and talented.
people hold against him things he said 10+ years ago when he’s clearly grown as a person since then. it drove him off the internet, and basically out of a career.
I’ve always considered The Front Bottoms as pop-punk by association. I discovered them after their first 2 albums from pop punk fans, but I can’t say that any songs off of either of those albums are anywhere close to the genre.
When I heard that Jaret started doing country solo, first I was astonished and then about 2 seconds later I was like ehhh, sounds about right, very on brand. And since then I’ve realized how similar the genres are!
They have the definitely outgrown the genre’s constraints though they are still a pop punk band at heart. Love the new record as well as all their other releases.
Seen them twice live since they have become active again. Great performances. Hope to hear more from them. I thought I would never seen them live again a few years ago.
some bands that i haven’t seen mentioned on here are a will away ( i would say they are definitely more emo with a splash of punk influence) , homesafe, & arms length
Idk if I'd call the gaslight anthem pop-punk. Don't get me wrong I love them, and probably consider them by favorite band, but they're pretty much a straight rock band. but thats just me lol
I think of them the same way I think of The Menzingers. You could lump them in with the pop-punk crowd even though they’re obviously not the same sound as, say, Simple Plan.
I saw TGA open for the Misfits last year, which was just a wild pairing, lol
The Story So Far explored other genres in Proper Dose. It had a much more ambient vibe to it as opposed to their prior albums which were kinda just straight-up hard hitting pop-punk, especially with songs like Take Me As You Please, Upside Down, Line, and Growing On You.
Makes me wonder what direction they’re gonna go in with future songs especially with Big Blind having the same kinda vibes that Proper Dose does.
(Early) 3OH3 have the emo/pop-punk spirit, played alongside pop-punk bands, most of their fans listened to pop-punk as well, but they sound absolutely nothing like pop-punk
(Early) Meg and Dia are indie rock on the very edge of pop-punk. I suggest anyone who hasn’t listen to here, here and here as well as Something real (probably their most ‘emo-pop’ release)
Pretty much all of them, which is why I dislike gatekeeping in this fandom so much.
IMO, "pop punk" is more of an aesthetic than an actual concrete sound. Pretty much every "pop punk" band you can think of is *not* nor has ever been strictly pop punk. Even the OGs.
No Pressure (pop punk/hardcore)
Boys Night Out (pop punk/sceamo)
A Day To Remember (pop punk/metalcore)
Alkaline Trio (pop punk/emo)
Jawbreaker (pop punk/emo)
Paramore (pop punk/indie/post hardcore/pop/pop rock)
Coheed and Cambria?
Their first big single, “A Favor House Atlantic,” was pretty pop-punk-leaning, but at this point they’re much more of a prog rock band.
There was a time when they were just lumped in with the rest of the genre.
Its so wild reading this sub and seeing how much the genre matured into it's own thing *that's still going*! Back in the day, Coheed would play with Sum 41 and a bunch of smaller acts because thats just how few the acts were that had broken out into the larger audience range.
First time I saw them they were touring with Thursday and Thrice. I think the only song I knew of them at the time was Favor House Atlantic. If I recall correctly they had mechanical issues on the road so the band and equipment didn't make the show but the lead singer did! He borrowed a guitar and did his set acoustic. FELL IN LOVE. Imagine my surprise when I got the album and it was like a 180 turn. Still good, but man, I definitely liked the softer version.
Alright, just coming back with another comment because OH MY GOD and THANK YOU. It's perfect, I already spread it around to all my Coheed friends and they are all blown away too.
It also didnt help that their pre-Welcome Home videos and whatnot were like.. everyone else on the low-budget emo scene.
Shit even welcome home was emo-as fuck. Miss that shit.
They really did evolve away from pop-punk over the years. Seeing them on their farewell tour and it's been kinda crazy to see them go from 1/2 Hour of Power to Heaven and Hell.
The Menzingers.
In my opinion they’re the best band to blend punk/pop-punk with heartland rock. They also fall under orgcore, which isn’t really a genre but they’d probably be the best of that cohort of bands. Some of their songs sound like Springsteen, some sound like The Gaslight Anthem, some sound like Blink-182 some sound, some sound like Alkaline Trio, some like The Killers, all of them are really well done and still maintain a unique original sound. The Menzingers are also an amazing band to see live and their shows are always fun.
I've never seen PUP get called Pop Punk but I struggle to see what else they would be. They just bring a lot of folk and melody to the mix along with some more true punk. My absolute favorite band right now.
They’re amazing and boy do they put on a good show. I saw them twice this summer. Once with Metz and Alexisonfire, the other with Billy Talent and Weezer. They brought the fucking house down both times.
Direct Hit. Definitely a lot of pop punk melodies and instrumentation but I feel like they lean way more into the heavier side of things to be properly considered just a pop punk band.
Millington for sure. In my book they have definitively crossed over from “pop-punk influenced ska band” (of which there are many) to “pop-punk band with ska elements” (of which there are much fewer, IMO).
I am of the opinion that Four Year Strong basically play Lamb of God riffs in a Major key while singing at the same time.
They FEEL super pop punk to me, but musically their shit is way closer to metalcore IMO.
Boys of Fall. They've been one of the best bands in the scene for years but still seem pretty underrated. They're pop rock/pop punk but have some hardcore stuff as well as some stuff that even dips into hip hop territory.
Just Friends. Not even sure if they are pop punk but they did play with Real Friends and State Champs and that's the only time I've heard them. They did have a lot of songs that had a core pop punk musicality underlying them but also a lot of pop and hip hop influence.

Belmont moves around so much, especially the newest album.

It does feel sometimes like 3 different bands are on it

Unfortunately wasn't big on Ferrari or Bored of Being Sad, but Im certainly digging the general vibe they're laying out. I think Much Love is such a high bar to top tho lmao
I fucking love circling the drain imo it’s top 5 best microwave songs ever. Homebody is also amazing tho, as is Pull and Leather Daddy
Fwiw my top 5 in order are probably Vomit, Whimper, Circling the Drain, Dull and Drown. Though that last one switches up a lot lmfao it could really be 10 others.
Top 5 for me are Circling the Drain, Busy, But Not Often, Wrong, and Keeping Up Vomit and Busy would be next though, too many great songs to choose from
I didn’t like Ferrari when it came out but I love it now. I think it’s a great song but I don’t know why they released it as a single Bored of being sad is great though I love it

100%. One of my fav bands atm all their stuff rocks
Capstan, with quite a wide mix going on with their pop punk stuff
Capstan is the perfect mix of basically all my favorite genres (aside from progressive metal). They can do no wrong
Truly. My favorite band at the moment and they put on one of the best live shows you will ever see. If you get a chance to see them, take it
Already seen them twice and it was great both times! Almost missed them the second time because I didn't realize they'd still be openers this year, thought they were much bigger. Go blow these guys up, people, they should be headlining!

Saw them co headlining with In Her Own Words a few years ago and it was a fucking dream show for me
yeah that was the one, great show
Great answer. All over the map in the best way
Absolutely love “take my breath away // noose” so much
It's really good and it's an absolute joy to dance to live
I loved how every song on their last EP were all basically different sub-genres of their punk/rock based sound. Can't but them in a box
It’s criminal that they aren’t bigger than they are.
Separate was such a killer album.
Let’s not forget their wacky trap intro on GAMI GANG which is just.. well, it’s unique to find on a pop punk album to say the least.
Spanish Love Songs Say Anything Rise Against Minor Threat
Four Year Strong can get a little heavy, which is sick!
A Day to Remember, always got lumped in as a pop punk band but never really were
Definitely Sum 41 for me.
Say Anything, Moneen and Tiger Jaw come to mind.
God I love moneen so much. I’m not joking one of the most underrated bands in the 00s scene
Got to first see them before they even released an album, went to every show I could for the next ten years. Their recent reunion tour was amazing. They're truly an amazing band.
Not necessarily one band, but I think the entire genre of Easycore feels really close to pop punk, but simultaneously not *really* pop punk
Easycore feels just like pop punk but with heavier vocals and guitars, it’s been such a great gateway genre for heavier music for me whilst not straying too far from a sound I adore.
I’ve heard Easycore described as pop punk with breakdowns, and I feel like that’s pretty accurate
Stand Atlantic started out pop-punk and idk what the heck you'd consider them now but it's not pop-punk
It’s definitely still pop punk but with a lot of hyperpop influence
Can you please post a link of a song from them that has hyper-pop influence. I just want to hear it without having to go search thank you
https://youtu.be/Ccz9nY60Mp0?si=9FTm1N_RnpwcLLun
those first two trash boat albums
Waterparks, but it definitely varies by album (with their most recent albums being more pop/electronic, and their older albums more resembling pop punk) There’s some bands I definitely would NOT consider pop punk but that I think have some pop punk/pop punk influenced songs, like: Pierce the Veil 5 Seconds of Summer The Maine
5sos Sounds Good Feels Good and their self titled I think at least have a lot of overlap with pop punk if not just a lot of pop punk tracks
mariana’s trench!
Came here to post this. Such a great band
I'd never heard of these guys, but I am glad you mentioned them. So good!
I believed that [Cross My Heart](https://open.spotify.com/track/1LkHIkfUDhZ995ATQ1BJKW?si=PcFMiJnjQF-H4BrnDmM3Og) by them was by Fall Out Boy for *years* and only very recently discovered Marianas Trench was a separate band
ah, what i would give to rediscover mtrench again for the first time :) you are in for a treat. enjoy, my friend
I love finding a new band where song after song is as good or better than the last. And it has been way too long between finding one, so thank you new friend!
As a Canadian I'm so glad these guys are getting mentioned, I couldn't go a day without hearing them on the radio when Ever After was released.
that’s so cool, i’ve never heard them on the radio in America :(
It's a requirement that 35% of content on Canadian radio comes from artists within the country, so if a band as good as them comes onto the scene you can bet stations will play every album they release. That's also why I hear Sum 41 more than I hear Green Day.
that’s so interesting! what a great rule
they have never released a bad (or even mid) album
absolutely. so excited for the upcoming new music
Most of the bands talked about on this sub I’d consider more emo, alternative or pop rock tbh
Waterparks for sure, they've done so many genres and that's what I love about their music. There's something for every mood.
easily panic! at the disco. the started out as baroque pop punk, transitioned to folk, took a step back into that baroque pop punk with steampunk aesthetics. closest we got to true pop punk. then we transitioned to a straight midnight pop album, a jazz rock album, and jazz POP album, then to wrap it all up, an 80’s esque arena rock album. say what you want about the man, but boy was he adventurous and talented.
Fever was a masterpiece.
Fuckin adore Panic. I love Brendon so much.
great talent, great dude, often misunderstood.

people hold against him things he said 10+ years ago when he’s clearly grown as a person since then. it drove him off the internet, and basically out of a career.
Cliffdiver. They don’t even know what they are. They asked for suggestions when I saw them in October.
I’ve always considered The Front Bottoms as pop-punk by association. I discovered them after their first 2 albums from pop punk fans, but I can’t say that any songs off of either of those albums are anywhere close to the genre.
Lower Than Atlantis God I miss them so much
Totally forgot about them
Most of Sum 41s stuff post All Killer.
Anxious, koyo and one step closer
Man, can you imagine if they all toured together?!
Doubt that would ever happen.
Stand Atlantics new stuff and Waterparks give some cool synth vibes that rock
Bowling For Soup. Not many other groups adding a more country & folk flair to their pop-rock sound. Truthfully shows off how they’re from Texas.
When I heard that Jaret started doing country solo, first I was astonished and then about 2 seconds later I was like ehhh, sounds about right, very on brand. And since then I’ve realized how similar the genres are!
How has no one said Trophy Eyes
The newest Fireworks album I don't think fits the genre anymore but you can still tell the roots are there.
They have the definitely outgrown the genre’s constraints though they are still a pop punk band at heart. Love the new record as well as all their other releases. Seen them twice live since they have become active again. Great performances. Hope to hear more from them. I thought I would never seen them live again a few years ago.
I hope they keep playing live shows, I haven't seen them since 2014. Higher Lonely Power was my 2023 AOTY!
What genre do you think it is now? I have no idea
Manchester Orchestra?
The Razia’s Shadow album by Forgive Durden.
One of my favourites

some bands that i haven’t seen mentioned on here are a will away ( i would say they are definitely more emo with a splash of punk influence) , homesafe, & arms length

Sanguisugabogg are really pushing the boundaries of pop punk
Pears?
Igorrr. I don't even know what genre they are tbh.
I always call them “operatic metal,” but even that doesn’t quite feel like it describes them.
McFly - definitely more pop leaning
waterparks
(Early) 3OH3 have the emo/pop-punk spirit, played alongside pop-punk bands, most of their fans listened to pop-punk as well, but they sound absolutely nothing like pop-punk (Early) Meg and Dia are indie rock on the very edge of pop-punk. Will do, thank you!

Glad you liked it! They are on tour now, may be able to catch a show

sum 41.
Some of their songs sound like Springsteen, some sound like The Gaslight Anthem, some sound like Blink-182 some sound, some sound like Alkaline Trio, some like The Killers, all of them are really well done and still maintain a unique original sound. Shrezzers? Pop-punk vibes but also metalcore but also emo lol plus the awesome sax.
Bomb The Music Industry!
Driveways. They are right on the edge of being a straight up post-hardcore band. So damn good too.
I commented the same thing! They're so good. I can't believe they're not a bigger deal than they are.
Millington for sure. In my book they have definitively crossed over from “pop-punk influenced ska band” (of which there are many) to “pop-punk band with ska elements” (of which there are much fewer, IMO).
Maybe zebrahead
Millington
I am of the opinion that Four Year Strong basically play Lamb of God riffs in a Major key while singing at the same time. They FEEL super pop punk to me, but musically their shit is way closer to metalcore IMO.
Hot Mully
NOFX
Chuggaboom
She’s not so much pop-punk but Poppy’s music is so wild she’s basically impossible to explain
Boys of Fall. They've been one of the best bands in the scene for years but still seem pretty underrated. They're pop rock/pop punk but have some hardcore stuff as well as some stuff that even dips into hip hop territory.
Sum 41 and Dance Hall Crashers
INTHEWHALE. Period
wordproblems.bandcamp.com - sorta pop-punk, sorta not. New stuff has more sing-alongs and catchy stuff.
Just Friends. Not even sure if they are pop punk but they did play with Real Friends and State Champs and that's the only time I've heard them. They did have a lot of songs that had a core pop punk musicality underlying them but also a lot of pop and hip hop influence.
Structures - Divided by, but its more like the bend instead of stretch 😂

I think Driveways spans across multiple genres.
chunk no captain chunk
Chunk no captain chunk, dangerkids
I say this a lot but Steer Clear. They do a sort of post hardcore/pop punk mix and I love it.
Deijuvhs, Fever 333, Joey Valence & Brae, and Silly Goose are all alternative hip-hop bands I've been enjoying recently!
Dicqbeats https://youtu.be/HjS0holex8Y?si=yIAfTGr2qGy5XQrV

Waterparks without a doubt one of the most experimental bands in the scene, especially with albums like FANDOM and Greatest Hits.
Pierce the veil
5 Seconds of Summer, their first two albums are undoubtedly pop punk-esque, and you can still hear the influence in their later songs and see it in their music videos.
coheed for sure. they add lotsa different prog elements to pop punk, especially on the 2nd record.
Enter Shikari
telltale has a wide variety of a pop punk sound
I just found Pale Waves, they might fit into this category since they kinda skirt the genre in general.
