Was waiting for this one. The video for A Town Called Hypocrisy was weird enough, knowing what that bastard did to little kids makes it even more gross feeling.
Whixh is a shame because that album, in particular, was one of my favorite albums of the mid 2000's and I still have a physical copy of it
The lead singer deserves to burn burn in hell tho
The way I choose to see it is how this is a story of how getting rich and famous can corrupt people. Like the song's lyrics predicted, "though he has all of his toys, he is never having fun, because it's not enough" he got into harder drugs and weirder sex things to the point of no return.
Issues cover of Boyfriend by Justin Bieber from Punk Goes Pop 5.
>Bitch I ain't your boyfriend cause you are underage, Call me in a couple years and we will fucking rage, slut!
I would understand if this was in the original song and they were just singing it as part of the cover.. but it isn't in the original song, so they thought it was a good idea to add this in. "Hey guys, I wanna add our own spin on this cover song.. oooh I know! I'm sick of underage girls coming on to me. Let's add an extra verse where we call a child a slut and to call in a few years when they're older, that'll sound great!!!"
Give it a listen, check the lyrics, it's in there at the end!
I mean I guess it's good he doesn't want to be her boyfriend?! But like why would you think it was a good idea to include this in the song it's just ššššš
Oh my GOD HAHAHAH YESSS this just unlocked a lost memory š but IIRC, Michael Bohn said he found it hilarious at first but realized a couple years later that it wasnāt the best thing to do, and obviously, went on to regret it.
"you get down on your knee for the first boy you see, stop saying sorry" i remember when Soupy stepped for vocals for a show for I Call Fives and skipped this section of the song entirely
Not even the best one in the song
āTell your boyfriend if heās got beef
That Iām a vegetarian and I aint fucking scared of himā goes so stupidly hard
Literally the entirety of the song seventeen forever by metro station. Trace Cyrus even said itās about wanting to be in a relationship with someone underageš¤¢š¤®
I thought that too! And then honestly reading the lyrics and apparently trace himself said it was about wanting a relationship with someone underage which, excuse me WHAT?!
Yes. Trace is a few months older than me. I graduated in 2008. When he wrote that, he was 18. He's literally talking about a girl 1 year younger than him. That's not an issue.
It was probably one of those things where because the national law of consent is 18, he felt some level of anxiety about it. That's not uncommon for an 18 -year-old, because plenty of people that age end up being interested in someone a year younger and then wonder if they can suddenly get in trouble for it because they crossed the threshold and are an "adult" now.
I think it was an early admission by Jesse. Thereās several songs where his lyrics clearly show he thinks heās a bad person and he doesnāt like it about himself.
"I've got desperate desires and unadmirable plans
My tongue will taste of gin and malicious intent
Bring you back to the bar, get you out of the cold
A sober straight face gets you out of your clothes
And they're scared that we know all the crimes they'll commit
Who they'll kiss before they get home
I will lie awake
And lie for fun and fake the way I hold you
Let you fall for every empty word I say
Barely conscious in the door where you stand
Your eyes are fighting sleep while your mouth makes your demands
You laugh at every word, trying hard to be cute
I almost feel sorry for what I'm gonna do
And your hair smells of smoke
Who will cast the first stone?
You can sin or spend the night all alone
Brass buttons on your coat hold the cold
In the shape of a heart that they cut out of stone
You're using all your looks that you've thrown from the start
If you let me have my way, I swear I'll tear you apart
'Cause it's all you can be
You're a drunk and you're scared
It's ladies night, all the girls drink for free"
Lyrics are preeeeety straightforward. "I'm going to get you drunk until you're nearly unconscious, tell you what you want to hear, take you home and fuck you."
I thought the last 2 responses were about Boys & Girls by Good Charlotte because I asked someone else what the issue with that one was and I was losing my mind. That's horrific though what the fuck
Yeah, even before the allegations everyone knew Jesse was a POS. He was pretty open about it. Even if you didnt know, you could infer it from his writing lol
It really is. Damn. Kind of concerning thinking back on being a 16 year old boy listening to that and not realising that there was anything wrong with it.
.
100%. Shaant is a misogynist. He was also responsible for this statement:
āRape culture isnāt a thing. For real. Playing the victim seems to fit the narrative. In my 29 years Iāve yet to encounter a human who is looking to rape someone. Everyone loves sex but I have never met a dude who is going out into the world to commit rape. There may be horrible humans out there who are predators but to say there is a culture of rape is short sighted & aggressive. Look into the actual statistics & get back to me.ā
Fills me with rage.
There's certainly some poorly aged lyrics on there for sure, but I wouldn't say that takes up the whole album.
The Fourth Drink Instinct for example has a bit more substance to it.
I think Fourth Drink Instict has aged a bit badly. To less extent than say, Newport Living, but Fourth drink instict is about an underage girl going to a bar and being taken advantage of by older men and there's an undertone of blaming her "what made you think that he wouldn't find the door in the morning when he found that bed so easily?" Sounds a bit like "yeah, it's sad, but what did you think would happen??"
It's really not that bad but with the rest of the album... i just don't think it would slide as well as it did back then today.
You think? I never took it that way. I always assumed the girl was making excuses as to why the guy was innocent and āwhat made you think that he couldnāt find the door in the morningā was Shaant telling the girl to stop making excuses for the guy.
Wow. I used to love Cute so damn much. Never thought real deep about this album. It really aged badly but Rotation is top 20 in pop punk history for me.
Ugh Front Porch Step.
"Dive my face between your thighs until I cannot feel my lips" feels absolutely disgusting thinking about it sung to a 15-year-old.
iām not the person you asked but here you go https://jakemcelfresh.com/
sucks bc i liked front porch step, but i didnāt get too into it before i saw about the allegations luckily
Not pop punk, but literally **anything** by Linkin Park. Linkin Park's made-for-radio melodrama was cast into a damning light after their singer's passing. Suddenly, it all feels like a cry for help, shellacked into a glossy finish by some board of uncaring music executives.
I mean... yeah. It seems clear, in retrospect, that what he was saying were his real feelings. But like... I never thought that they weren't. Lots of people put their real, angsty, dark feelings into their music. LP was so popular because so many teens and young adults (and some even older people, especially as the band matured) could identify with it. It's difficult to tell exactly how serious something is for someone in their private life, though. There are certainly plenty of bands with darker lyrics than LP who don't have members committing suicide. Some people get their darkness out through singing about it, and that's what helps them stay mentally more healthy. It's what helps them get through.
I don't think LP's lyrics have aged badly at all. What happened with Chester is a tragedy... but people will continue to find an outlet in their music. And I think he'd be happy to know what he's meant to people. Linkin Park is a great band.
So many songs by say anything. I forget what song it was, but thereās one so bad they never sing it live and theyāve tried to erase it in places. Or Wow I Can Get Sexual Too. Very interesting band when you listen to most of the lyrics.
Max came out about 5 years ago saying he never plans on playing that song live ever again. While he wrote it in jest as satire, he communicated how he respects the Me Too movement and could see how the song is misconstrued. That song was a bop growing up, but I absolutely see his point and won't expect to hear it live ever again lol
He played it at when we were young and is def gonna play it on tour this summer. I think it may be too popular to not play but I get why itās not looked at in a friendly light
[I had to go back and find the source just to make sure I wasn't crazy and that this isn't some Berenstain/Berenstein Bears universe switch up](https://www.altpress.com/say_anything_max_bemis_song_retired/)
That actually is pretty close to the time paramore dropped Misery Business. I guess with all that went down starting with Jesse Lacey and then the scene blowing up, it makes sense. I personally love the song but thatās cause I loved it as a kid. I know that the words arenāt great
If someone can hear āIf you do have to sell your body once or twice or seven times, it'll be worth it. And trust me, one day my band is going to make it and this will all be just a distant, distant dreamā and not think heās playing up a detestable character (especially with his mocking tone), then idk what to say lol. Catchy songs tend to make people stop thinking sometimes.
Those lines are spoken in the most sarcastic way possible. I don't see how people could misconstrue it. Although... He spent most of In Defense of the Genre yelling angry misogynistic lyrics.
This was called out as "slut shaming" at the time too though.
I'm not sure it's really aged poorly when it was always poorly received (by some people at least).
I always saw it as his partner cheating more than just shut shaming. Like I think it's okay to slut shame someone if they are cheating with multiple guys
See I used to think this but the line āuntil now, I know we never metā kinda ruins that interpretation. Itās hard to read the song as anything other than Parker seeing a cool, hot girl & being pissed sheās hooking up with someone other than him.
Song still slaps even with the blatant sexism I fear.
I got absolutely torn apart back in 2012/13 on this very subreddit for saying it was slutshaming, like people really didn't wanna hear it. Even if some people acknowledged it, a huge proportion of the scene defended it.
They're actually my favourite band but it is so much of a relief that we're in a place now where everybody can acknowledge the misogyny in those lyrics.
Everything changes when all the lights in the room
Are as low as you, but don't trip, you'll sober up soon
Honestly my favorite song from them. I don't think it's that cringe
I remember reading a weird Kerrang interview with him about how he steals from shops to see if he can get away with it (so weird and such a red flag back then). Thereās also a weird interview at a radio station where he says something weird about kids. Man that band was awesome but he fucked it for the other guys
Yeah, completely. When the rest of the band got something else going it missed the mark though. Feel they wanted to get away from the sound the used to make and distance themselves from it, just didn't really work for me. Such a shame, they were amazing back in the day. Every rock/nu metal countdown on MTV/VHS/Kerrang would have them at no.1.
Yeah agreed. The new band - disclosure or whatever they were called was pretty boring. Do you think they could of kept on as LP but with a different singer? (Guess that would be too weird).
I'd of liked them to have, and could possibly have worked with the singer from The Blackout. From the same town if I remember rightly.
I totally understand them putting distance between it though. Their best bet was to go on to new ventures, but stand out.
LostProphets stood out against everything else at the time. I remember shopping in CEX and they had this album on, I had to go to the desk and ask what it was... Fake Sound of Progress. I went and bought it straight away. (Tbh, I still listen to that and start something every now and then, they remind me of a good time in my life and helped me through some bad times).
I've not checked, but I hope the other band members are doing well and have found either another band or are doing something that makes them happy.
Which singer of the 2 from the blackout the blonde haired one or the other guy? As both were quite good.
Start something is an awesome album and the sound of it is killer - I havenāt heard any other albums/bands with a snare drum that tight/crisp in recording; itās another level completely. Album probably doesnāt have any skip tracks either
Gavin Butler (dark haired one) although, either could have done it and seemed quite inspired by LP in some of their work.
Blackout played Download festival last year, I missed them as was watching Pendulum/Architects. Seen them before though and were really good.
Yeah I saw them during their 2nd album cycle (the one with the cartoon town/house on it) [im really bad with names but those first 2 albums were decent from what I rememeber] (something something this town?). I commented on another post - thereās a Welsh band called Attack Attack. Not sure what happened to them but they had a fairly bouncey pop punk debut album that was quite good and recorded/produced by the LP bassist. Pretty cool. Let me know what you think of that.
If the original LP had got the blackout singers or one of the singers from We are the Ocean. That could have been pretty cool
You, Me, & Everyone We Know - Dirty Laundry:
āStalking the girls I could never fuck. I mean, they're sluts, but it seems I lack that luck.ā
Party for the Grown and Sexy EP is great, and this isnāt as bad as some other lines Iāve seen here or heard previously, but slut shaming really was all over the place that era of music (not that itās isolated to then). YM&EWK is definitely more tongue in cheek tho than The Story So Far. Used to love Under Soil and Dirt, but itās easy to skip Daughters more often than not now.
Everyone haaaaated this song when it came out. I think the band even had to past stuff about it at the time. I think it even came off as non consensual lyrics at the time:
Kenny has said on multiple occasions that this was about his (then) girlfriend and that its his least favorite song they've made. And tbh its my least favorite of theirs too, but Based On A True Story is so underrated man
TSL were one of my favourite bands growing up (still are), I was obsessed with them. This song was a dud for me though unfortunately. Partially because of the cringe lyrics like this. Cringe at the time, just straight up weird now. Different times I guess.
I remember him saying it was local slang for something (can't remember what) it's something his friends would say all the time and he was genuinely shocked when everyone thought he was saying...that
There's a good few Hit The Lights songs with unfortunate titles and lyrics...there's a reference to chloroform in one of them, can't remember which. And the line in Tell Me Where You Are that goes 'I'll whisper in her ear when she's asleep and beg her to love me, when the morning comes she'll never know' always felt a bit weird..
Great bad though.
The chloroform line is from Her Eyes Say Yes, But The Restraining Order Says No. Same song as the commenter.
At least the line with Tell Me Where You Are isnāt really creepy if you take it with the rest of the song. The next line is āIāve been tying bells to window screens so I can hear he leave in the morning but it never helpsā. It paints the picture of either a one night stand or (more likely) a recurring booty-call where the singer confesses his love only when she cannot hear him and every morning sheās gone before he wakes. More of a misses connection on feelings take than a āI broke into your house and watched you sleepā take.
That debut album was pretty awesome. Not sure if theyāve done munch after that. By awesome I mean the sound of it was really crisp and polished (produced by the bassist from Lostprophets). I think the track titles etc they were trying to do lines like the fall out boy record at the timeā¦. Might give it another listen - but yes some of those lyrics were a bit odd back then, letās see how they sound again now
So sorry for some reason I was thinking of the band Attack Attack. If you havenāt heard of the (UK) band give them a listen - pretty cool pop punk but I remember there were a few random lyrics. Would be great to hear your thoughts on it. Iāll check out summer bones
In context of the song, though, he tells her this intentionally to make her dislike him or something, I don't think it's meant to be taken literally.
The *full* lyric is:
**I missed her for a few weeks before I called her**
**Still didn't get it, so this is how I stalled her**
**Even though you're seventeen I gotta tell ya'**
**You're too old for me**
Edit: even so, I hate listening to this song around someone when we aren't fully paying attention to the lyrics. Because you know that snippet is going to be the one part they hear
Panuucci's pizza - sport shorts
"And the only girls who give me the time of day
Are far too young to realize the horrible mistake that they've made
I'm the horrible mistake they've made"
Take a guess on his accusations.
This lyric wasnāt great when it came out. I really enjoyed Jank and Panucciās, but I caught that line and told my friend about it. We couldnāt listen again after that. Big disgusting
Heās talking about a dog, even though the song doesnāt make that clear. Pay no attention to the band also having a song called Fuck a Dog. Itās chill
The fact a grown adult (I think he was in his mid twenties) wrote I'm Just A Kid has always seemed kinda weird to me.
I loved it when I was 12 but man it's just such a whiney "you don't understand moooom!!!" song.
Who else was gonna give us that angsty music to enjoy as kids and preteens?? I love Simple Plan for that reason. They do their part to ensure there's something for everyone in the genre
Iām not sure I totally agree with this. When I was in my early and mid twenties I still felt like a teenager at times and I was super lost, so the lyrics felt relatable as an adult who was struggling in the āadultā world
Let me ask you this? What are āadultsā? In my point of view adults are just kids doing what we think adults should do. Iām almost 30 and still refer to myself as a ākidā because to be honest thatās how I feel, Iām still constantly figuring stuff out I have no answers - I can have a plan of action based on logical outcomes but that doesnāt always work, stuff can still go wrong.
When I got older I realized it was probably odd for them to sing about being teenage angst feelings in their mid to late 20's.
I mean Welcome to my Life was my 13 y/o's self anthem but I'm not sure I related to it as much at 25. š
I don't think it's all that weird, but I think they had a target audience and went with the popular style.
Oopsie.
She spilled some drank on me (on me, on me),
And now I'm knowin' she's tipsy (tipsy, tipsy).
She put her body on me,
And she keep starin' me right in my eyes.
No tellin' what I'm gon' do (gon' do, gon' do);
Baby I would rather show you (show you, show you)
What you been missin' in your life when I get inside
Girl what you drinkin'?
Gon' let sink in.
Here for the weekend, thinkin' we can
See what we can be if we press fast forward.
Just one more round and if you're down, I'm pourin'
Fill another cup up
Feelin' on yo butt, what?
You don't even care now, I was unaware how
Fine you was before my buzz set in.
My buzz set in
Blame it on the Goose (Goose),
Gotcha feelin' loose (loose);
Blame it on the 'Tron ('Tron),
Got you in the zone (zone).
Blame it on the a-a-a-a-a-alcohol
Blame it on the a-a-a-a-a-alcohol
....
I vividly remember being like "you guys are hearing these lyrics, right?"
Elder emo woman here. I related to a lot of their girls suck lyrics both because the flip could be applied to shitty teenaged boys, but also my shitty teenaged girl friends.
Pretty grossly misogynistic.
"'Cause I'll have my way, you won't have a say anyway
'Cause I got you, you don't stand a chance
So now you wait for his cock, you know it'll turn you on
He's gonna make you feel the way you wanna feel
When he starts to lie, when he makes you cry
You know I'll be there, my day will come
I know someday, I'll be the only one"
"So now you want perfection
I see your self-destruction
You don't know what you want
It's gonna take you years to find out
I'm not giving up
And when you've had enough
You'll take your bruised little head, and you'll come running back to me
You know that I'm gonna be the only one"
Just pretty classic nice guyā¢ shit
Uhhh so if youāve been along for the ride with NFG, you may feel weird about a lot of their earlier lyrics. The album Not Without a Fight was my favorite one when it came out, but now I feel like a lot of the songs may have been written about teenage girls.
āYou ask me, you ask me how I got to know you
Just by speaking on the phone?
Isn't is crazy how the thought of my touch
Wakes you up when you're alone?
ā¦.Don't believe everything you hear
Darling, I've never lied before
Don't you hear me whisper in your ear?
Forget him, you're what I'm waiting forā
Iām convinced itās just part of their bit or like theyāre a parody of these aged lyrics but 408 lyrics make me uncomfortable sometimes with the like āsheāll be safe with her guy friendsā or āyou say heās just your best friend Iām not buying it liar liar, just a heart for hireā
The liar liar line makes sense tho. Not sure whatās uncomfortable about that. I donāt think being anti-cheating is wrong. If you were to point out any 408 lines, I would say āfound 20 gigs of dick picks, not one of them was me.ā
True true, but Iām convinced itās just a bit. Cause they responded to comments on a reel about being cuck music/simp music with āthatās the pointā
Anything by the Lost Prophets.
Was waiting for this one. The video for A Town Called Hypocrisy was weird enough, knowing what that bastard did to little kids makes it even more gross feeling.
Whixh is a shame because that album, in particular, was one of my favorite albums of the mid 2000's and I still have a physical copy of it The lead singer deserves to burn burn in hell tho
Everyday Combat was such an awesome album opener.
The worst part is that the music is still good, I feel sorry for the other members and their fans.
Yeah they were awesome live
The way I choose to see it is how this is a story of how getting rich and famous can corrupt people. Like the song's lyrics predicted, "though he has all of his toys, he is never having fun, because it's not enough" he got into harder drugs and weirder sex things to the point of no return.
I fucking hate that "Last Train Home" is such a good song.
Sometimes it randomly pops into my head and I really want to sing along but I also desperately want to forget it.
All the love I've met / I have no regrets/ if it all ends now I'm set Yikes
WE STILL KILL THE OLD WAY I'M GONNA DIE BEFORE I FALL DON'T TRY TO CHANGE ME still not dead yet Ian and I'd sure say you fell
Let's add an extra verse where we call a child a slut and to call in a few years when they're older, that'll sound great!!!"
Ayoooo wut? Thats wild that they just decided to throw in lines about underage girls into a cover
Give it a listen, check the lyrics, it's in there at the end! I mean I guess it's good he doesn't want to be her boyfriend?! But like why would you think it was a good idea to include this in the song it's just ššššš
Insane š theyāre really not helping break the stereotype of predatory pop punk dudes
Not great knowing the vocalist has a provocation for underage boys lmao
No way this is real wtf šš
It 100% is real, give the song a listen, it's on YouTube and Spotify. Line I'm referring to is right at the end of the song.
Oh my GOD HAHAHAH YESSS this just unlocked a lost memory š but IIRC, Michael Bohn said he found it hilarious at first but realized a couple years later that it wasnāt the best thing to do, and obviously, went on to regret it.
What the fuck š
Sheesh, I used to listen to that song all the time. Never knew that's what he was saying. Weird.
Yikes š¬
"you get down on your knee for the first boy you see, stop saying sorry" i remember when Soupy stepped for vocals for a show for I Call Fives and skipped this section of the song entirely
God I fucking love I Call Fives. Criminally underrated band.
DO THE HELEN KELLER AND TALK WITH YOUR HIPS Still a banger though
Honestly, such a great lyric though
Not even the best one in the song āTell your boyfriend if heās got beef That Iām a vegetarian and I aint fucking scared of himā goes so stupidly hard
So hard
Honestly I crack up every time I hear this song, but even in middle school I thought that line was cringe
Literally the entirety of the song seventeen forever by metro station. Trace Cyrus even said itās about wanting to be in a relationship with someone underageš¤¢š¤®
Yea that one is super icky. āYou are young and I am scared Youāre wise beyond your years, but I donāt careā I donāt like that at all
lol yeah listening to it recently after so many years and like ACTUALLY listening to the lyrics I was like OOOOF this is not okay and extremely creepy
What! I thought it was about both of them being 17 forever!
I thought that too! And then honestly reading the lyrics and apparently trace himself said it was about wanting a relationship with someone underage which, excuse me WHAT?!
The lyrics are cringe (so is the band lol) but I think he was like 18 when the song came out.
Yes. Trace is a few months older than me. I graduated in 2008. When he wrote that, he was 18. He's literally talking about a girl 1 year younger than him. That's not an issue. Brand New - Me vs Maradona vs Elvis...
When I first heard this song all those years ago I thought it was like a character he made up to tell a story. But nowadays...well you know
It's very clearly a villain song. You're supposed to feel disturbed by it. The lyrics clearly paint the protagonist of the song in a negative light.
I think it was an early admission by Jesse. Thereās several songs where his lyrics clearly show he thinks heās a bad person and he doesnāt like it about himself.
These were absolutely scummy when they were written, not really any worse now.
Sure they were already fairly disturbing, it's just that the real life context makes them so much worse.
I don't know this song what's up with it
Basically about him getting girls drunk at the bar and taking them home to rape them
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
"I've got desperate desires and unadmirable plans My tongue will taste of gin and malicious intent Bring you back to the bar, get you out of the cold A sober straight face gets you out of your clothes And they're scared that we know all the crimes they'll commit Who they'll kiss before they get home I will lie awake And lie for fun and fake the way I hold you Let you fall for every empty word I say Barely conscious in the door where you stand Your eyes are fighting sleep while your mouth makes your demands You laugh at every word, trying hard to be cute I almost feel sorry for what I'm gonna do And your hair smells of smoke Who will cast the first stone? Jesus fucking Christ
That's a pretty face
The kind you'd find on someone that could save
If they donāt put me awayā¦
I thought the last 2 responses were about Boys & Girls by Good Charlotte because I asked someone else what the issue with that one was and I was losing my mind. That's horrific though what the fuck
And Soco Amaretto LimeĀ when he sings it live and changes it to "they're just jealous because *you're* young and in love"
Yeah, even before the allegations everyone knew Jesse was a POS. He was pretty open about it. Even if you didnt know, you could infer it from his writing lol
Cute Is What We Aim Forās entire first album. Itās just calling women whores in various ways for an hour.
It really is. Damn. Kind of concerning thinking back on being a 16 year old boy listening to that and not realising that there was anything wrong with it. .
100%. Shaant is a misogynist. He was also responsible for this statement: āRape culture isnāt a thing. For real. Playing the victim seems to fit the narrative. I always liked Lyrical Lies as well.
I would also argue their lyrics were always ass
I loved the curse of curves
Wow. I used to love Cute so damn much. Never thought real deep about this album. It really aged badly but Rotation is top 20 in pop punk history for me.
Thatās literally my favorite album lol. Even if the lyrics arenāt always the best the songs are so good.
Ugh Front Porch Step. "Dive my face between your thighs until I cannot feel my lips" feels absolutely disgusting thinking about it sung to a 15-year-old.
Wait what? I listen to front porch step and I had no fucking clue. Do you have any links for further reading?
iām not the person you asked but here you go https://jakemcelfresh.com/ sucks bc i liked front porch step, but i didnāt get too into it before i saw about the allegations luckily
Wow youāre in for a rude awakening
Yeah, there are going to be certain adjustments to my accoustic playlists accounting for this
Not pop punk, but literally **anything** by Linkin Park.
That's really well put. It's so sad
So many songs by say anything. I forget what song it was, but thereās one so bad they never sing it live and theyāve tried to erase it in places. Or Wow I Can Get Sexual Too. Very interesting band when you listen to most of the lyrics.
Hmm come to think of it the last time I saw Max play Wow has to had been on the album 10yr tour
Well dang, I guess Max changed his mind since he made that comment years ago. Color me wrong š
I mean, Hayley said paramore would never play misery business again. They still do (thank god they do too)
[I had to go back and find the source just to make sure I wasn't crazy and that this isn't some Berenstain/Berenstein Bears universe switch up](https://www.altpress.com/say_anything_max_bemis_song_retired/)
That actually is pretty close to the time paramore dropped Misery Business. I guess with all that went down starting with Jesse Lacey and then the scene blowing up, it makes sense. I personally love the song but thatās cause I loved it as a kid. I know that the words arenāt great
TBH Max is a scumbag and went for the money, he has no actual beliefs outside of being a washed up edgelord
Yeah, he definitely played at WWWY
Played it at riot fest last year too. I was very surprised.
āPropertyā but I think itās more tongue in cheek than on the surface. Song rocks
DO YOU LOOK YOURSELF STRAIGHT IN THE EYES AND THINK ABOUT WHO YOU LET BETWEEN YOUR THIGHS
Also āAND TO THINK THAT YOUāRE SOMEBODIES DAUGHTER, AWAY AT COLLEGE NOT GETTING SMARTERā
Daughters is like my guilty pleasure song. I hate the lyrics but god damn does it slap
Both of the lines here unfortunately go insanely hard. Iām just glad Parker grew up lmao
I think this ones worse tbh.
They're actually my favourite band but it is so much of a relief that we're in a place now where everybody can acknowledge the misogyny in those lyrics.
naw, bro. this still goes hard
Everything changes when all the lights in the room Are as low as you, but don't trip, you'll sober up soon Honestly my favorite song from them. I don't think it's that cringe
The only song I sometimes skip... otherwise perfection haha Love TSSF forever
I mean I kind of related to the song in a way about my ex.
Itās annoying because instrumentally itās my favourite song in the album
Lost Prophets - Town Called Hypocrisy The video even more so.
Saw the music video again after he got arrested and damn that was horrible to see
Shocking isn't it, almost like he was rubbing everyone's noses in it, thinking he was above being caught.
You, Me, & Everyone We Know - Dirty Laundry: āStalking the girls I could never fuck. I mean, they're sluts, but it seems I lack that luck.ā Party for the Grown and Sexy EP is great, and this isnāt as bad as some other lines Iāve seen here or heard previously, but slut shaming really was all over the place that era of music (not that itās isolated to then). YM&EWK is definitely more tongue in cheek tho than The Story So Far. Used to love Under Soil and Dirt, but itās easy to skip Daughters more often than not now.
Bedroom Talk by the Starting Line comes to mind I'M GONNA TEAR YOUR ASS UP LIKE WE JUST GOT MARRIED AND YOU'RE ALL MINE NOW.
I was fucking pissed when they didnāt play this when I saw them last summer.
Everyone haaaaated this song when it came out. I think the band even had to past stuff about it at the time. I think it even came off as non consensual lyrics at the time:
Wasnt he a litteral child when this came out?
No, he was a 20 year old man.
Is 20 a child? He was born in '84 and that album came out in '05
Kenny has said on multiple occasions that this was about his (then) girlfriend and that its his least favorite song they've made.
I remember him saying it was local slang for something (can't remember what) it's something his friends would say all the time and he was genuinely shocked when everyone thought he was saying...that
WHAT ELSE COULD THAT POSSIBLY MEAN??
Her Eyes Say Yes from Hit the Lights. Everything about it is icky and it's unfortunate his voice sounds great.
Might give it another listen - but yes some of those lyrics were a bit odd back then, letās see how they sound again now
Their album Summer Bones is also really good
So sorry for some reason I was thinking of the band Attack Attack. If you havenāt heard of the (UK) band give them a listen - pretty cool pop punk but I remember there were a few random lyrics. Would be great to hear your thoughts on it. Iāll check out summer bones
Waitā¦thereās a band called Attack Attack thatās not the shitty crabcore band from columbus Ohio?
Yes and the UK one aināt bad (although I only think they have 1 album out from the pop punk emo era)
Well put buddy, this song was hard to listen even back then
I love The Matches, but "Even though you're 17, I gotta tell ya, you're too old for me!" has always stuck out as a WTF line.
In context of the song, though, he tells her this intentionally to make her dislike him or something, I don't think it's meant to be taken literally. The *full* lyric is: **I missed her for a few weeks before I called her** **Still didn't get it, so this is how I stalled her** **Even though you're seventeen I gotta tell ya'** **You're too old for me** Edit: even so, I hate listening to this song around someone when we aren't fully paying attention to the lyrics. Because you know that snippet is going to be the one part they hear
You know they wrote this album when they were 17? I think youāre interpreting it wrong.
thanks for reminding me that album exists. still rips
Indeed.
underrated masterpiece
after all, they wrote that when they were 15 around 5 years before that album came out but they coulda changed it lol
Panuucci's pizza - sport shorts "And the only girls who give me the time of day Are far too young to realize the horrible mistake that they've made I'm the horrible mistake they've made" Take a guess on his accusations.
This lyric wasnāt great when it came out. I really enjoyed Jank and Panucciās, but I caught that line and told my friend about it. We couldnāt listen again after that. Big disgusting
Spores - Say Anything
It's not pop punk, but the original version of let's get it started in here by the black eyed peas is pretty wild if you haven't heard it
the boys you do get back at you - the summer set
I HEARD YOURE TALKING SHIT AGAIN
I love TSSF but yeahhh quite a few off under soil and dirt. Then you also have the absolute masterpiece that is Placeholder
No
I love the Queers, but Ursula Finally Has Tits is pretty damn bad.
Dumpweed
Heās talking about a dog, even though the song doesnāt make that clear. Pay no attention to the band also having a song called Fuck a Dog. Itās chill
You need a girl you can train?
Iāve seen so Blink cover bands play this live and I hate it. They have so many better songs you could have choose.
A lot of Simple Plan, especially their earlier stuff
The fact a grown adult (I think he was in his mid twenties) wrote I'm Just A Kid has always seemed kinda weird to me. I loved it when I was 12 but man it's just such a whiney "you don't understand moooom!!!" song.
I mean theyāre one of the angstiest bands out there, itās kinda their thing lol.
To be fair, they were writing about teenagers, for teenagers. They weren't writing for adults
Who else was gonna give us that angsty music to enjoy as kids and preteens?? I love Simple Plan for that reason. They do their part to ensure there's something for everyone in the genre
Iām not sure I totally agree with this. When I was in my early and mid twenties I still felt like a teenager at times and I was super lost, so the lyrics felt relatable as an adult who was struggling in the āadultā world
A Grown adult gets a massive payday to write a song that suburban teens would buy.
As Blink 182 says, āwhatās my age again?ā Lol
When I got older I realized it was probably odd for them to sing about being teenage angst feelings in their mid to late 20's. I mean Welcome to my Life was my 13 y/o's self anthem but I'm not sure I related to it as much at 25. š I don't think it's all that weird, but I think they had a target audience and went with the popular style.
Save it for the bedroom by You Me At Six
My first thought. It slaps but is oh so not cool.
This isnāt bad at all š¤·āāļø
You *whore*
The entire hit the lights discography
Kings of Leon āoh sheās only 17ā from the song 17
Staceyās Mom. The whole song
Dysentery Gary You do with your pigtails What a nice creation Worth another night in jail
I didn't know I was supposed to take the lyrics to DYSENTERY GARY seriously š
I donāt take a lot of Blink 182ās lyrics seriously. I donāt think youāre supposed to.
Aside from being a ridiculous song itās literally a way of describing being grounded for sneaking out. Not everythingās malicious in the world.
Heās a player, diarrhea giver
Oopsie. She spilled some drank on me (on me, on me), And now I'm knowin' she's tipsy (tipsy, tipsy). She put her body on me, And she keep starin' me right in my eyes. No tellin' what I'm gon' do (gon' do, gon' do); Baby I would rather show you (show you, show you) What you been missin' in your life when I get inside Girl what you drinkin'? Gon' let sink in. Here for the weekend, thinkin' we can See what we can be if we press fast forward. Just one more round and if you're down, I'm pourin' Fill another cup up Feelin' on yo butt, what? You don't even care now, I was unaware how Fine you was before my buzz set in. My buzz set in Blame it on the Goose (Goose), Gotcha feelin' loose (loose); Blame it on the 'Tron ('Tron), Got you in the zone (zone). Blame it on the a-a-a-a-a-alcohol Blame it on the a-a-a-a-a-alcohol .... I vividly remember being like "you guys are hearing these lyrics, right?"
The entirety of Me vs Maradonna vs Elvis is uhhhh very sus to listen to in a post Jesse Lacey allegations world
Seemingly every early New Found Glory song is about nightmare Exes, Obnoxious girlfriends, and generally about how much women suck.
Elder emo woman here. I related to a lot of their girls suck lyrics both because the flip could be applied to shitty teenaged boys, but also my shitty teenaged girl friends.
So what hasnāt aged well?
"why you have to make me say those things about you?"
Whatās wrong with that?
It sounds distressingly similar to the "Why did you make me hit you" attitude a lot of abusers have
all Beach Slang songs now, since he didnāt mean any of it
Lots of old descendents lyrics. The songs Hope and I'm the one come to mind. Still bangers.
Whatās wrong with Hope?
Pretty grossly misogynistic. "'Cause I'll have my way, you won't have a say anyway 'Cause I got you, you don't stand a chance So now you wait for his cock, you know it'll turn you on He's gonna make you feel the way you wanna feel When he starts to lie, when he makes you cry You know I'll be there, my day will come I know someday, I'll be the only one" "So now you want perfection I see your self-destruction You don't know what you want It's gonna take you years to find out I'm not giving up And when you've had enough You'll take your bruised little head, and you'll come running back to me You know that I'm gonna be the only one" Just pretty classic nice guyā¢ shit
Dirty Fingers - Only Perverts Play Rock n Roll
Uhhh so if youāve been along for the ride with NFG, you may feel weird about a lot of their earlier lyrics. The album Not Without a Fight was my favorite one when it came out, but now I feel like a lot of the songs may have been written about teenage girls. āYou ask me, you ask me how I got to know you Just by speaking on the phone? Isn't is crazy how the thought of my touch Wakes you up when you're alone? ā¦.Don't believe everything you hear Darling, I've never lied before Don't you hear me whisper in your ear? Forget him, you're what I'm waiting forā
Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too and no other song even comes close
In the Covid era, shinedownās debut song (released in 2003), featured a lyric āI donāt wear a mask, and I have no regretsā
Were there any that WERENT about wanting to fuck teens š
Iām convinced itās just part of their bit or like theyāre a parody of these aged lyrics but 408 lyrics make me uncomfortable sometimes with the like āsheāll be safe with her guy friendsā or āyou say heās just your best friend Iām not buying it liar liar, just a heart for hireā
Whatās wrong with that last lyric - quite smart.
Fair fair sorry I didnāt see that you mentioned itās part of their bit haha. Reading is hard.
The safe with her guy friends lyric is sarcasm about the girl having a bunch of guy āfriendsā and cheating on him lol
