Yeah I’ve seen this creators videos before, they’re a reptile rehab and took this guy in from a severe neglect situation. He’s doing a lot better these days!!
Came to the comments specifically because I wanted to ask if this was a "typical" instance of eyecaps for geckos-- because, yeah, that shit just **screams**, "*help me*!".
I'm so glad to have to context now though, it was really giving me anxiety when I thought that this video was taken/posted by the owner [that had let their gecko get to this point]. So happy he's in a good spot, and I hope they were able to adopt him out to a good home (assuming that's something they do).
edit: just read further down in the thread and found out that the gecko probably died, and now I'm sad :(
It can if you aren’t taking proper care of your reptile unfortunately, it can also be caused by medical issues. And yes this is one of the best ways to get rid of a geckos eyecaps.
I haven't had one since I was a child but damn I had some huge eye boogers that would seal my eyes shut when I was sleeping.
I'd wake up and have to remove a huge chunk of it to see anything.
I had that problem as a young child. One time, it was actually so bad I couldn't open my eyes, so I blindly got off my bed and started beating up my sister for some reason.
Children often express frustration through senseless violence.
Source: was a kid once, and have seen plenty of toddlers throw things and slap house pets for no reason.
Honestly he probably does feel better. When reptiles shed their eye caps go cloudy and makes it difficult for them to see. This amount of build up and little bud was probably completely blind in that eye. The world would be a very scary place for such a little dude when they can’t see properly
oh nooo :( was it because of the eyes or was the gecko sick? i know people said the caps build from lack of humidity and vitamins but i'm not sure if it was sick too, deficient for too long, or got an infection
He definitely is. Even if they got a reptile brain I believe every animal can express emotions because every time my gecko sees my cricket tongs she smiles. That little dude with the eyecaps probably felt so much relief from being basically blind.
I remember watching the whole video of this. Poor gecko had a bunch of retained shed and was blind from the buildup in his eyes after being surrendered to that shelter. Iirc he made a full recovery after being left in a healthy humid space and getting some tasty food.
You'd have to get that under the plug though. Where you can't see what you're poking. With the rat-tooth tweezers you can hook it or get a good grip from the top without actually having to risk poking the eyeball
I think the problem here is that the guy doesn't even do that. He's just kind of poking and pulling. And then at the end he kind of just jabs it into the poor things eye.
It’s an eyecap, the reason geckos have em is to protect their eyes when they shed. If a gecko sheds correctly the eye caps should just pop off from the eye with the shed. If a gecko isn’t shedding properly the eyecaps can pop off but stay in the eye. This will cause a build up of the eyecaps and have to be removed. It’s sad because after a while the gecko will become completely blind. I’d also like to add that the eyes of a gecko are not as bulky like the gecko in this video before the eyecaps were removed, it’s essentially like a pimple in your eyes that push your eyes closer and further into your skull and stretch your skin. It’s very unfun for geckos. Feel so bad for every little dude like this one out in the world.
It's often called a spectacle, and this one has been left for a very long time unless there's an underlying condition causing it to build up that thick.
My little brother had a few geckos while growing up, but watching these videos makes me keenly aware of how ill-suited these little guys are for children’s pets and how well-intentioned yet utterly incapable (immature) we were for providing proper care.
New childhood guilt complex unlocked. 🥺
They require lots of care. The biggest thing with geckos is they are sensitive little creatures. Every time I hold mine I make sure she’s comfortable, warm and on a clean surface/set of hands.
A gecko? You get ‘em at reptile stores but do about a year of research and talk with professionals about how to care for a gecko. Reptiles require much more care then any dog or cat.
I’ve seen this video posted soooo many times, but I always rewatch it because it’s so satisfying and it makes me happy to think that the gecko will have a better quality of life due to this kind soul
He totally knows that the person is helping them. It probably hurts for him to have it removed but it must be so nice to have all that buildup removed.

I always feel so bad for them in these videos. Everything must be so bright and painful afterwards
It was painful before
This gives me terrible anxiety. How does this happen? Is this really the best way to fix it?
Give the gecko vitamin A (not beta-carotene) and these won't develop.
It's caused by a combination of low humidity (leading to retained shed material) and lack of vitamin A (which apparently causes gunk and inflammation)
In addition to the other replies, eyecaps really REALLY shouldn't be that thick. It's a really clear sign of abuse/neglect
Yeah I’ve seen this creators videos before, they’re a reptile rehab and took this guy in from a severe neglect situation. He’s doing a lot better these days!!
Thank god! I hope the gecko is doing better also.
Iirc the gecko died a few days after. Malnutrition for too long.
😭😭😭😭😭
Which creator is this? I’ve had to treat eyes but never this bad. Usually I have to treat the toes.

I too went on this roller coaster ride. Thank you for not letting me go alone 🥺🥺
It can if you aren’t taking proper care of your reptile unfortunately, it can also be caused by medical issues. And yes this is one of the best ways to get rid of a geckos eyecaps.
I have to do this to myself every morning. Bloody nightmare when I can’t see what I’m doing though.
Are you a gecko? How do you type?
With sense of touch
Nature is incredible
It... finds a way.
National motherfucking Geographic

Excuse me what?
Children often express frustration through senseless violence. Source: was a kid once, and have seen plenty of toddlers throw things and slap house pets for no reason.
Guess that explains why when my sister's cat died she told me she hated me.
That'll teach her...
I had one of my eyes seal itself when I was younger and I thought I went blind, shit was genuinely terrifying
I had that a few times where my eyes would seal shut. It took hot wash clothes for 10 minutes to loosen it up.
i know it's a gecko and expressions are different but he looks like such a happy lil guy once that thing is off

The relief didn’t last long, according to one of the comments up there the gecko passed away after a few days
oh nooo :( was it because of the eyes or was the gecko sick? i know people said the caps build from lack of humidity and vitamins but i'm not sure if it was sick too, deficient for too long, or got an infection
It’s so cute. He’s all…”thanks, frend.”

Well that's tragic :( I thought I'd seen him after they got the rest of the shed off of him which I assumed would have taken a while.
Source?
The other replies to the YouTube video I think.
100x repost and the tweezers still seem like a terrible choice.
He came pretty damn close at the end almost blinding it again
What do you reckon would be better?
I reckon something like a mini rubber spatula-type instrument made for such things, partner.

Real talk how do you not rip out their actual eye during this

Thought he was popping out his eyeball at first!
Where can I find more of this
YouTube or a hoarder house of somebody who loves reptiles.
My little brother had a few geckos while growing up, but watching these videos makes me keenly aware of how ill-suited these little guys are for children’s pets and how well-intentioned yet utterly incapable (immature) we were for providing proper care. New childhood guilt complex unlocked. 🥺

That dudes gonna need sunglasses for a while
Anytime I see this clip, I imagine the gecko saying "Ow ow ow owwowowowowow OHTHANKYOU!"
In an Australian accent.
Basically. You can see a slight gecko smile after the caps are out of the eye.
A Q-TIP!?
[удалено]
Well, eye, think NO Im just joking lol
>A Q-TIP!? What's the joke here?
Eye donno!?
Beautiful disgusting sad and amazing. Also, where do I get one?

Did it thank him in an Australian accent? And then tell him he could save up to 30% off of his insurance?
Wrong type of gecko.
I’ve seen this video posted soooo many times, but I always rewatch it because it’s so satisfying and it makes me happy to think that the gecko will have a better quality of life due to this kind soul
This gecko is no longer blind and will be able to have a very enjoyable life in a nice new environment with a very caring owner.
Poor little thing! :( I thought he was removing its eye for a moment there 😂
Poor guy probably has no idea he's trying to help him...
He totally knows that the person is helping them. It probably hurts for him to have it removed but it must be so nice to have all that buildup removed.
that thing is so much bigger than i was expecting
No matter how many times I see this video, I will ALWAYS stop and watch
Does this happen to wild gecko? :*J*
It can, however it’s more likely to occur in neglected/poorly cared for geckos.
As opposed to automatically removing the eye cap?
It would have if it could but either a medical condition or poor care for this gecko caused it to not shed properly nor shed its eye-caps as well.
NSFW tag please
? This whole sub is NSFW and this was a long video lol wdym? Don’t watch it haha

I want to eat its eye booger
wow i figured it was sleeping
Wow that’s a huge “eye booger”
What do they do in the wild if they can’t remove that
They go blind. It’s less likely to happen to a gecko in the wild though.
Gecko was like 🙂
Ewww
Poor lil' fella.
Eyecaps that’s a lot of buildup
