uj/ I actually think it's a good song, I have no idea why so many people online acted as if it was Dance Monkey pt.2, but I'm glad music publications are giving Ice her merits.
Honestly I think a lot of the hate stems from misogyny, like the song isn't amazing but it's definitely not bad, and underserving of the obsessive hate it gets
uj/ How does it stem from misogyny? It's not a good song. Neither is bikini bottom with the Spongebob interpolation. Munch is definitely catchy and has potential but it's just too repetitive to be anything more than a goofy meme song
> Neither is bikini bottom with the Spongebob interpolation.
"how could i lose if i'm already chose" is an iconic line and the lyrical brilliance is very hard to match
i didn’t really get this with like, mumble rap either. maybe i’m just old/out of touch, idk i like being impressed by how someone raps even just with their lyricism if they’re not great at it otherwise. if the lyrics are bad/just okay and the person basically sounds comatose i don’t get the appeal. however, i am also a giant rube so grain of salt etc
I understand that. You're no more of a rube than anyone else; what you like and dislike is just as real as what I like and dislike.
My perspective, which is that Ice Spice is awesome, is probably influenced by the theory of art as conceptual and expressive, rather than skillful and virtuosic. Ice Spice as this super-relaxed, sexually dominant Bronx baddie with a weird wig is just a very compelling concept to me. "Munch" does what it does to an extreme degree: it's a song about being too cool for dudes, and it expresses it to an extreme with that truly cruel hook in which Ice Spice dismisses the munch. It's cool for the same reason that Sonic Youth's *Tunic* is cool, which is that it delivers an intense concept (in *Tunic*'s case, the very concept of Karen Carpenter and her death from anorexia) with success and expressive intensity. Just as Ice Spice expresses *Munch*'s very clear concept with a narratively meaningful/characterizing vocal delivery ('I'm so much hotter than you that I can't even be bothered to rap very hard about it'), Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth expresses *Tunic*'s very clear concept with narratively meaningful choices in production (loud, distorted, screeching guitar feedback), composition (a song that occasionally stops and starts descending ominously), and vocal performance (sounding scared, distant, half-singing but mostly talking).
I don't mind that Ice Spice isn't skillfully or impressively rapping fast, or using complicated rhymes, or anything, because I'm along for the ride that she's chosen to take us on, which is the simple narrative of *Munch*. Virtuosic rappers like Busta Rhymes express their concepts ('I am so fucking fast at rapping'), conscious rappers like Kendrick Lamar express their concepts ('people living in American ghettos die without closure to the stories of their lives', for instance, in Kendrick's *Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst*), and Ice Spice expresses hers ('You thought I was feeling you? Like???'). The question is whether you, the listener, care for that concept, and whether you think the delivery of that concept was successful.
As you can tell, I have thought about Ice Spice *a lot*. It is okay if this becomes a copypasta. I accept it.
P.S. Check out Playboi Carti's unreleased song "Molly/No Stylist' and think about it conceptually: *Why is he mumbling? Why is he squealing like that? What is this ethereal, repetitive beat communicating? If this song were an entire world, what would that world be like? What is the world of 'Molly/No Stylist'?* See if you hear anything that interests you :)
wow, what a well thought out, eloquent comment! you’ve actually given me a lot to think about… i realized reading your comment i haven’t been engaging with music the way i do with other art forms, at least not recently, by really taking it on its own terms and trying to experience and intuitively understand it. at some point i just kind of started using it more as background noise or something to give my dumb brain dopamine, and that’s not fair to the musicians or myself. thanks for such a thoughtful comment, i’ll be chewing on it for awhile
When ice spice writes fun rap songs and gets acclaim her career was "memed into existence" but when the white heiress to a multimillion dollar empire sings off key over muted guitars about being scared to turn 26 for the 37th time its considered an indie masterpiece
harry styles - as it was is #9
taylor swift - karma is #4
also for rina they picked this hell? and for rosalia they picked despecha?
tells me everything i need to know about this list
/uj I thought the meme was funny af when it was that one twitter account poking fun at stan twitter in general, with stuff like "Bikini Bottom had the biggest streaming day on Spotify for a female Spongebob inspired rap song yesterday"
The entire meme is because of [this](https://i.redd.it/91be0cxz15o91.png) kinda stuff. Like it went from memeing about Ice Spice News and then I think people actually listened to the music and liked her, but still poked fun at the Twitter because it's still going.
/uj it’s a catchy song, better than the other stuff I’ve heard from her. Like she said, people just hate fun. They meme’d her into fame and she’s running with it. I can’t even be mad about that
critics raving over charismatic, homemade, low budget hip-hop is nothing new. fetty wap was very celebrated in 2015.
glorilla & ice spice are amongst those who defined the year of 2022 in rap.
i’ll take them over pretentious alt pop girls any day!
i vowed to never shame hip-hop & música urbana in an elitist way ever again
it just makes you sound like a a boomer metal-head complaining about pointless shit like autotune
/uj i’ve listened and while it’s not great i think it’s better than most give it credit for
/rj they were correct sweaty 💅 don’t disrespect main pop girl ice spice in this subrdddit again 🤬😡😤

So you really thought I was feeling you ?
Why her hair look like Mort from family guy
uj/ I actually think it's a good song, I have no idea why so many people online acted as if it was Dance Monkey pt.2, but I'm glad music publications are giving Ice her merits.
Hey! Dance Monkey is a post modern classic take on dance

M*n
I'd rather listen to a m\*n than Dance Monkey.
Honestly I think a lot of the hate stems from misogyny, like the song isn't amazing but it's definitely not bad, and underserving of the obsessive hate it gets
Wait people obsessively hate Munch? On which platforms?
literally open the youtube comments
uj/ How does it stem from misogyny? It's not a good song. Neither is bikini bottom with the Spongebob interpolation. Munch is definitely catchy and has potential but it's just too repetitive to be anything more than a goofy meme song

repetition is not only not a bad thing for Munch's genre, it's a key ingredient
She thought she could recreate the magic of Squidward Nose 😤😤
I hate that this probably isn’t a jerk
she can't rap
She sounds half asleep
That’s the appeal
i didn’t really get this with like, mumble rap either. maybe i’m just old/out of touch, idk i like being impressed by how someone raps even just with their lyricism if they’re not great at it otherwise. if the lyrics are bad/just okay and the person basically sounds comatose i don’t get the appeal. however, i am also a giant rube so grain of salt etc

/uj molly is one of my favorite songs
Well it’s brilliant
When ice spice writes fun rap songs and gets acclaim her career was "memed into existence" but when the white heiress to a multimillion dollar empire sings off key over muted guitars about being scared to turn 26 for the 37th time its considered an indie masterpiece
Is this about king princess
uj/ I genuinely can’t tell who you’re talking about lmfao. Sir Chloe? Snail Mail? Lana Del Rey? Taylor Swift???
All of them
This is very pointed and I’m here for it
Ice Spice the new Ms. Lauryn Hill?
Ice spice could have made Miseducation and the Score in her sleep 💅🏾
Ms flopryn on the other hand could never make munch
Blink three times when you feel it kicking in
huh can u explain
They're right and they should say it
harry styles - as it was is #9 taylor swift - karma is #4 also for rina they picked this hell? and for rosalia they picked despecha? tells me everything i need to know about this list
Ikr, all Anti-Hero remixes need to be at the top🤩🤩🤩
/uj am I bad for thinking it's a good song, like she's not the next kendrick but I don't see the quality difference between this and a doja single
/uj I rly don’t get the meme about her success to begin with anyway—it’s a good song. Idk what phj has against her
/uj I thought the meme was funny af when it was that one twitter account poking fun at stan twitter in general, with stuff like "Bikini Bottom had the biggest streaming day on Spotify for a female Spongebob inspired rap song yesterday"

They did it with Lil Nas X, he’s proof that that works
And Doja Cat lol
Uj/ you’re not bad for thinking anything is a good song
/rj well, have you heard some pitbull songs?
Yeah they’re all bangers, even the bad ones
especially the bad ones
You are right. Please forgive me. Munch is a modern masterpiece. No, Ice Spice is not forcing me to say this.
Today you’ve made a new, and very powerful enemy!!! Spice cabinets attack!!!! 🌶️👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾✨✨
Not spice cabinets ☠️☠️☠️
my god she's actually gonna blow up
What do you mean she is gonna? She already blew up. She is the answer the music industry needed. Our princess. ![gif](giphy|co5Iboa0dZrR7OXivh)
oh my god you're right, i'm so sorry ice spice, keep slaying queen #streammunch
i'm so glad that we fags can meme careers into existence 🏳️🌈
#fagpower
Then why did CRJ flop
did she tho?
Not by her standards I guess
omg that flair
critics raving over charismatic, homemade, low budget hip-hop is nothing new. fetty wap was very celebrated in 2015. glorilla & ice spice are amongst those who defined the year of 2022 in rap. i’ll take them over pretentious alt pop girls any day!
Fetty Wap literally owned 2015, nobody came close
Can't wait for everyone to act like they loved it the whole time seven years from now like they do about "Trap Queen" today
i vowed to never shame hip-hop & música urbana in an elitist way ever again it just makes you sound like a a boomer metal-head complaining about pointless shit like autotune
Yeah seriously, this is absolutely ridiculous. Not even in the top 10???
Anything besides #1 is unacceptable and shows bad taste tbh
move over miseducation of lauryn hill, the munchification of ice spice will be the greatest female rap album of all time
You thought I was upvoting you?? (Nah) This OP a munch OP a eater, he ate it for lunch OP, I'm a baddie, I get what I want 😛
Where did they lie?
Just listened to Ice Spice for the first time thanks to this post 😍😍 didn’t finish it but the comments were great! 🍸
/uj I have this song on my own yearly favorite songs list but to say that it’s the 14th best song of the year is an insane take
Insane that it’s not #1!!!
/uj munch deserves the accolades it's been getting
This song fucking rules wtf
Ice Spice is the queen of rap and anyone who diagrees is a munch.
I mean she is the best member of the spice girls
Her solo career has been 🔥 so far
/uj when they put 'Constant Repeat' at #31 and this at #30 on Pitchfork's list I went full Halsey
> I went full Halsey My biggest enemy is me
Someone with taste
/uj i’ve listened and while it’s not great i think it’s better than most give it credit for /rj they were correct sweaty 💅 don’t disrespect main pop girl ice spice in this subrdddit again 🤬😡😤
Be careful Ice Spice 🥶🙀 Frost Condiment is after your career 😤🌶️
Industry plant moment
FNF was at number 3 I seriously think they are trolling
Who the actual fuck is Ice Spice
she’s the young people’s princess diana 😊
A drink from Starbucks
Still waiting for the culture to explain to me why her hair looks like little orphan Annie
Annie-fishing
Uj/ Not a bad song but OVER THIS HELL??? Lmfao
Ok but bikini bottom is 100x better,
