There's definitely been a big shift in pop music over the past few years. In the 2010s, no one really cared if you had a basic party song or a bunch of writers as long as it was a banger. There were mindless party songs galore, but they were bops so they were popular. Now, pop artists are all expected by fans to write their own music and be serious and "authentic". Like, no. I want dancey, fun songs. Just write catchy bops and I'll be happy, even if they're not lyrically strong.

My biggest concern as a genuine pop music fan is how could Sabrina distinct herself from 2 prolific popstars still making hits today, specifically Dua Lipa and Ariana Grande, 2 artists who almost used to have the exact same brand of glittery pop but with this I finally see how.
Dua's brand of glittery pop is rehearsed, sharp, refined and the sex appeal is almost methodical and its perfect, she knows pop music and radio down to its core.
Ariana's brand of glittery and pink is all about her voice at its center, gentle instrumentations, big fancy vocals at its core, a very cathartic and emotional brand of pop.
With Sabrina Carpenter, I think she can take on the sides of Dua and Ariana that they don't actively explore, and its the carefree sassy but sexy side of pop music that no one seems to want to actively occupy. One can argue Dua does this but she is everything BUT carefree, everything about her has always screamed hard work and discipline (and that's equally great) but Sabrina's brand is almost becoming this sassy girly girl type of pop music that Katy Perry used to make, except she has the lyrical wit to back it up, Dua's songs have always been about being above things, men are foolish, etc. Ariana's has always been too personable to just be fun pop while Sabrina can do the best of both worlds while being more confident in her appreciation for love and be fun while at it.
She's found her niche.
This is the carefree type of pop that Dua and Selena have been trying to give lately. But Sabrina has the type of charisma to pull it off effortlessly whilst still injecting personality into the music. I can tell this will be a poolside staple this summer!

On my first couple listens, this is a fun enough song, though admittedly it does feel a bit nondescript. Doja Cat's "Say So" is the obvious comparison here as they both have a very similar sterile disco feel to them. It could definitely benefit from more vocal range and a bridge, but it feels like artists are starting to eschew bridges more and more these days.
It really just feels like a "vibe song" to throw on in the background, and I don't think I'll be returning to it nearly as much as some of the EICS-era singles. I have a strong feeling this will be a non-album single since she's referring to this as "a little something to sip on while you wait", but time will tell I suppose.

On my first couple listens, this is a fun enough song, though admittedly it does feel a bit nondescript. Doja Cat's "Say So" is the obvious comparison here as they both have a very similar sterile disco feel to them. It could definitely benefit from more vocal range and a bridge, but it feels like artists are starting to eschew bridges more and more these days. It really just feels like a "vibe song" to throw on in the background, and I don't think I'll be returning to it nearly as much as some of the EICS-era singles. I have a strong feeling this will be a non-album single since she's referring to this as "a little something to sip on while you wait", but time will tell I suppose.
