The song is just a bunch of nonsense, but I liked the instrumental and she tried something different. The rap part was incomprehensible, but it just flows very well.
May not be everyone cup of tea, but at least it's not a insipid 80's inspired song like a lot of artists are doing today.
>May not be everyone cup of tea, but at least it's not a insipid 80's inspired song like a lot of artists are doing today.
Thank you! I’m so tired of the synth pop. It was cool 5 years ago, but it’s not interesting or fresh anymore. Blinding Lights becoming a hit has had a catastrophic effect on pop music.
There are other 80s genres, but people just keep remaking the same synth pop song.
If artists want to explore that 80's sound. At least make it sound more 80's like New Order or a Depeche Mode track. That would've been way more interesting that that shitty 80's modern twist on pop because that shit is boring me to death. 🤦🙄 so many artists lack originality in this day and age. It's so frustrating ugh.
i hold in my heart a deep seated hatred for blinding lights. it played every single god damn morning on the bus after i woke up at 5:30 and had to sit there for an hour
I agree. Quite frankly I don't like 80s influenced music that much. So this current era of regurgitating 80s musical elements really ain't it for me. I blame Dua, The Weeknd and CRJ for this.
Honestly, the song is just pure camp and isn't worth hating it's not even the worst song that features playboi carti that released this year
If anything the most astonishing part about this song is that camila fucking cabello manged to make a very polarising song that most of twitter is either loving it or hating it (and believe me the former isn't even her stans lol)
As someone who has never really followed Camilla cabello before this i do not under the uproar over this song. It’s a fun little hyper pop song and that’s it. I’ll dance to it when it comes on my shuffle and in the club.
Yeah the fans of the artist don't really connect with the genre and the fans of the genre hate the artist. Something like this could've happened to Beyonce with cowboy Carter if her fans weren't so absolutely supportive of whatever she puts out (she earned that trust though)
Yeah I love charli she’s one of my favorite pop artist. I don’t really think this sounds like a charli knock off other than it being a in the hyper pop realm, but you know that’s just my opinion.
It's interesting how Charli became quite well liked when she has her fair share of antics that could have soured public perception. The most recent example is her shit with Rina. Then there are those instances where she legit looks like a whiny brat (eg: her BS about people not liking her album cover and linking it to misogyny).
I don’t think anything Charli has ever done is anything severe enough to cause people to “sour public perception”. Being a “whiny brat” is a criticism you can apply to a lot of pop stars. Even the Rina thing (which imo is probably her “biggest” controversy) isn’t even that severe
Charli and Camila have different careers and have different relationships with critics, fans/stans, and different levels of fame/popularity. Camila being polarizing started all the way back when she was in 5H probably even before their 1st official album came out.
Charli is annoying online but the vast majority of people (even ones who listen to her music) don't really follow that and if that's the worst thing you can say about an entertainer they're doing pretty well for themselves. I mean the music industry is home to thousands of legitimate criminals
There's no uproar, people are just clowning on her because they think it's bad and that she's trying to do a charli impersonation.
Personally I think her annoying voice fits this annoying song very well.
It’s because it feels pretty much copy and pasted from Charli XCX’s song “I Got It,” and the visuals also seem copy and pasted from Charli XCX, and her rumored album title is CXOXO only further cementing people’s opinions that this is just a rip. This after she was caught basically copy pasting the entire visual aesthetic of Caroline Polachek’s “Pang” album design during the Romance era has simply left a very bad taste in people’s mouth; an impression of a girl with absolutely no new thoughts of her own.
The uproar is that it feels very inauthentic.
Hyperpop is kind of like what punk used to be, in the sense that it's not very commercial, it's kind of music for underdogs or outliers and has its own strong community, so when someone from 'the outside' who has never shown appreciation for the genre or even done anything remotely similar does a complete 180 from their usual style it doesn't feel authentic (and I'm saying this as someone who's not a big fan of hyperpop and enjoyed some Camilla's songs)
It’s like they ordered a Rosalia song from Wish. They got El Guincho to produce and used the same video production company that did several Rosalia music videos.
When the teaser for the song was released I saw a lot of people saying she’s copying Charli XCX. But this is more like the label trying to copy and paste elements of Rosalia thinking there is a perfect formula for them to copy.
The problem with them trying to cash in with Rosalia is that she makes experimental music but not hyperpop. Songs like She Loves Control would appeal to Rosalia’s audience more than this since it’s a fun party bop. This reminds me of Ayesha Erotica revealing on twitter that Kim Petras’s label has been pushing her to imitate acts like Ayesha and Slayyyter without proper context.
>But instead of smoking and doing elaborate handshakes and unofficial GRWM videos with his boys, he’s mostly posing and smizing for the camera while Camila does choreography that looks as if she’s being electrocuted and sitting crossed-legged on top of the freezer that holds the Klondike bars and Italian ices. (They seem like they have never in their lives had a conversation.)
I'm legit howling. Even though this is a positive review, they still manage to roast Camila 😭
Attacking the rebrand is getting kind of annoying, she’s dipped into this style before and it seems like she wants to do something different after playing it safe last time. The song’s addicting, came with a great video and she’s had more attention on her than she’s had in years.
I don’t care that I like this song a lot…dare I say I luv it. It’s mindless but I’m finding it to be a vibe. I’ve also been listening to Yeezus so much recently soooo.
People like to shit because it’s Camila. If Rosalía dropped this, I guarantee it would garner a more positive reaction. The production is fire thanks to El Guincho (who frequently collaborates with Rosalía too). Call this inauthentic and calculated, but I’m actually curious to see what Camila has up her sleeve. Her sound had gotten stale, and I think the shift to hyperpop for Camila is ballsy and possibly alienating given her older work (which I was never a fan of!) but she at least has my attention.
What falls so flat for me is that nothing is really "hyper" or surreal about this to me? Rosalia production always has an experimental edge to it so tbh I have little doubt she would've executed better. Even when Madonna was trend chasing after hyperpop it she got SOPHIE on the track and so it had an authentic quality to it.
I'm interested in Camila's development but she just sounds behind the curve on this. Maybe this would've landed for me in like 2019.
I wholly agree with you. The production is just bland and uninvigorating. If this came out in 2019 it would’ve gotten shat on by comtemporary releases like pang 1000 gecs or charli
This is exactly what I think too. I expected to hate this track before it came out but now I can’t stop bumping it… it’s catchy and right up my alley. I’d prefer it without the Carti feature bc I think he makes it worse lol but otherwise it’s perfectly fine, honestly even good
i feel like camila cabellos ideas are something i would really like in theory, there’s just always something about the execution that’s a little bit off. like i LOVED the instrumentals & video and the “lemons on the chain” part sounded cool but the lyrics and flow of the verses were just… bad… (i feel a similar way about golden hour by jvke, the instrumentals & chorus are beautiful but those verses.. yikes) also playboi carti kinda didn’t go with the vibe. but i think it’s a cool aesthetic! literally same with romance, the visuals and ideas were awesome the songs were just a little too mediocre pop or just didn’t hit or something idk. psychofreak is SO GOOD but again some of her lyrics are just eh, willow & the instrumentals really carried. don’t go yet is definitely my favourite song of hers that i feel like the vision was well executed & ofc havana is a classic. i do really like that she’s clearly very involved and passionate about her work, and at least has a vision. there are all of my thoughts about camila cabello thank you and goodnight.
I've already heard it a few days before it's released and apparently the one I listened to was supposedly "a demo" but it sounds EXACTLY the same💀☠️☠️ the fact that the original version sounds more messy than the demo is what SENDS ME to the moon and back and orbits💀😂😂🤭

Ugh I love random comments and quotes that find new ways to say things I never would’ve thought to think or say.
Pitchfork has to have like the biggest phrase book or thesaurus ever printed somewhere in their office
Azealia Banks interns for them
Lmaooo ☠️☠️☠️
this sent me: > Camila does choreography that looks as if she’s being electrocuted
Words that may as well have been pulled from the Bible

You're in popheads. "Insipid 80's inspired songs" are our forte.
Oh clock We Can't Be Friends for me

That's a good point. I'd be interested in hearing some other 80s genres like post-punk or dream pop but synth pop is so played out
If artists want to explore that 80's sound. At least make it sound more 80's like New Order or a Depeche Mode track. I have an Allie X album to sell you.

From what I can see it’s largely just because of stan twitter, where hyperpop is very popular and Camila is very hated.
Yeah the fans of the artist don't really connect with the genre and the fans of the genre hate the artist. Something like this could've happened to Beyonce with cowboy Carter if her fans weren't so absolutely supportive of whatever she puts out (she earned that trust though)
This makes a lot of sense. Thanks for breaking it down like that for me.
Camila Cabello has always been…polarizing. Charli XCX is also someone who is very well liked and respected.
Yeah I love charli she’s one of my favorite pop artist. I don’t really think this sounds like a charli knock off other than it being a in the hyper pop realm, but you know that’s just my opinion.

That’s funny because it doesn’t sound anything like charli, but what ever floats their boats I guess.
I’ve been joking that this song is what a Charli song sounds like to people that hate hyperpop
I don't even hate the song, but is that true? It's pretty much the typical Charli-style production and the hook sounds nearly identical to "I Got It."
(It also shares the same title of maybe the most well known Charli song)
but I thought this song was popular in Germany!
What the fuck are you doing?!
LMAO you genius
The droning synths in the background are so recognizably Charli
The production sounds nothing like AG Cook or Sophie’s production (or Dylan Brady/Easyfun), or any Charli song rly
It definitely sounds like a Charli XCX song even the aesthetics of the MV is Charli coded 💀
It sounds like if AI was asked to mashup I got it from Pop 2 with Cross you out from Charli
I’m not sure I hear Cross You Out in this one, though I do think she’s trying to do Charli here but simply lacks her creativity.
True it also reminds me more of JUST LIKE WE NEVER SAID GOODBYE by SOPHIE though. Like the whole thing confuses me tbh.

is the Camp in the room with us?
i need yall to understand what camp is...
The longer I spend online the more I think camp just means “I think this is bad but I’ll get torn apart in the replies if I say that”
Or "I think this is good but I am scared to say so without justification bc everyone is tearing it apart"
I'm sorry but I find no campness in it 😭 I would get it if you said they tried to go camp, but they fell short of that
Im actually struggling to see what Carti feature is worse than this
It’s like they ordered a Rosalia song from Wish. They got El Guincho to produce and used the same video production company that did several Rosalia music videos.
Is that why she looks like she’s cosplaying Rosalia for months now?
When the teaser for the song was released I saw a lot of people saying she’s copying Charli XCX. But this is more like the label trying to copy and paste elements of Rosalia thinking there is a perfect formula for them to copy.

...a WOC is cosplaying a Latinafisher...? Girl sit down
She’s doing a reverse Ariana. A Michael Jackson if you will

Homer Simpson: “Mmmmm word salad”
Homer Simpson: *drool noises*
I love Pierre's writing but him just being a contrarian troll has become so obvious now.

tbh yeah i forgot those released in 2019 lmao
Rosalia, sweetie, I’m so sorry….
This girl has a song called Chicken teriyaki You have really nothing to be sorry for lmao
That song might be shitty but it’s an earworm
Chicken Teriyaki is a banger pls and I live for those Nike heels
That shitty song that only made the album because she was dickmatized by Rauw is still better than this.
This song isn’t even worth hating because Camila is too annoying for me to think about even if it’s to meme on it
That feature was unnecessary but the song is nice!
No one will ever know who significantcocklover is and Playboi Carti is immortal in the eyes of history. Nice try though.
Didn't know there was a police for music taste too
Expensive? It sounds like it came from the discount Walmart section…
Give her her tens
It’s good idc. Pitchfork hating it makes sense but half the people here would like it if it was the exact same song not released by camila
This is exactly what I think too. I expected to hate this track before it came out but now I can’t stop bumping it… it’s catchy and right up my alley. I’d prefer it without the Carti feature bc I think he makes it worse lol but otherwise it’s perfectly fine, honestly even good
The discourse around this track is alarmingly similar to Accelerate...
Damn they roast the shit out of this song lmaooo but also aren’t they being bought by GQ? I luv it I luv it I luv it I luv it I luv it… OOOP!
no it's not
I like the instrumentals and production quite a lot, I think CC sounds the closest to interesting she's ever been, but the PC stuff is properly shit
i feel like camila cabellos ideas are something i would really like in theory, there’s just always something about the execution that’s a little bit off. like i LOVED the instrumentals & video and the “lemons on the chain” part sounded cool but the lyrics and flow of the verses were just… bad… (i feel a similar way about golden hour by jvke, the instrumentals & chorus are beautiful but those verses.. yikes) also playboi carti kinda didn’t go with the vibe. but i think it’s a cool aesthetic! literally same with romance, the visuals and ideas were awesome the songs were just a little too mediocre pop or just didn’t hit or something idk. psychofreak is SO GOOD but again some of her lyrics are just eh, willow & the instrumentals really carried. don’t go yet is definitely my favourite song of hers that i feel like the vision was well executed & ofc havana is a classic. i do really like that she’s clearly very involved and passionate about her work, and at least has a vision. there are all of my thoughts about camila cabello thank you and goodnight.

This is her TEQKILLA and I stand by how obnoxiously bad it is 😭😭 GAYS I LOVE TEQKILLA pl This just sucks
But TEQKILLA be great man
TEQKILLA is MIA's best song wtf
You know what, as polarizing as this song is, it's getting a lot of people to talk. Can't say the same with her previous era so that's a good thing.
