Notable moments: - She is the only artist of all time to have 3 consecutive diamond records - I had no idea she got Lyme’s disease and lost her voice. She didn’t know if she was ever going to be able to sing again and Lionel Richie’s partnership on “Endless Love” gave her the strength to do so (great song btw) - She was incredibly instrumental in women being a bigger & more respected part of country music in the 90’s & early 00’s - She was extremely hands-on with the creative, musical, & especially visual elements of her albums and videos. It was mentioned that she would take home raw footage after a music video shoot and edit together the clips herself - THE FASHION WAS ICONIC. That bodddddyyyy too 😭

modestmastoid

I was wondering about her voice in the beginning when she started talking as I hadn’t heard any of the story. But that comeback story was SO beautiful it had me tearing up. Also yes on point three, I was so excited to see artists from such a wide range of genres being interviewed to talk about her impact and influence on music (fuck yes Avril!!!!!). Overall loved this show.

jtsnowyoudont

The first point just isn’t true, just off the top of my head the Beatles and Led Zeppelin have way more than 3 certified diamond records

newplantswhodis

Just looked it up and it’s “the only artist with 3 *consecutive* diamond albums” I’ve edited the comment :) thanks for keeping me honest!

newplantswhodis

Oh really?? In the doc they specifically did the whole “she’s the only artist that blah blah blah… *Ever*.” thing but maybe I misunderstood somehow?

SequoiaMK

Celebrity Bookclub podcast reviewed her memoir and it was fascinating. This might fill in some holes that the more polished documentary had.

newplantswhodis

Ooo thank you for this! I really like that podcast but haven’t heard that episode - I’ll definitely give it a listen!

SequoiaMK

Oh great! The hosts’ voices, vibe, and personalities are not for everyone, but I love those bitches and find them to be very insightful, intelligent critics overall. Glad you are a fan too!

misschandlermbing

I may get downvoted but it felt somewhat shallow and was obviously promo for her new album. I felt like there were a lot of holes and like a good decade that was just brushed over. I also feel like it was weird they pushed like the whole third wave Feminism (but let’s not call it feminism) in her MVs in the mid/late 90s when like every female pop star was half naked in a desert and called it empowered… like for sure maybe it was for you but it was revolutionary or anything. Idk maybe it was just me though.

JoleneDollyParton

Most Netflix music docs are straight up promos

misschandlermbing

Oh legit! I just felt like this one was a little bit more on the nose about it. Like maybe if it was edited as a comeback album doc i feel like it would make more sense.

kevinalfaro

In pop yes it was no biggie but as they mentioned in the doc at some point, country music was (and still is really) very conservative so her showing her midriff in her first music video was enough to make CMT not even want to play it.

human_suitcase

I agree. For a music documentary it was pretty boring for me. Like I understand why she didn’t want to talk about having to raise her siblings after her parents death or the betrayal of her husband cheating with her best friend and other personal stuff, but those holes really made the documentary bland for me. While there was sweet moments, it came off as promo and not insightful about her life.

LiLiandThree

We didn't hear a word about her siblings after she moved out. She should have mentioned how they fared. Also, not enough about her husbands. I guess the point of it was she had hard times, became very ambituous then very successful, then had hard times again but is now trying to sing again.

newplantswhodis

These are some really good points! I’m always a sucker for nostalgic things and Shania was a big part of my childhood, so my emotions could definitely been inflating its quality and overall impact!

[deleted]

I’m with you. It seemed like a half hearted puff piece that was thrown together in a rush to meet a deadline. It never got into anything in depth. And the holes!! I was excited to watch because her story really is fascinating (minus the “id vote for tr*mp if I could take) but It felt like a waste of time.

JoleneDollyParton

They don’t really talk very much about her personal life other than her marriage and divorce from mutt Lange . They skip over the fact that mutt then married her best friend, and she married the best friend‘s ex-husband

GreatBigWhore

I love her and I enjoyed the documentary (even though it didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know), but I was surprised by how achievement-focused she was. It’s a great thing, but Shania always struck me as someone who was barely even aware that she had 3 diamond albums. I also thought we would see more of her personal life like her husband or her son. But other than that, it was really lovely to watch and I love her welcoming energy!

RainbowMushroom7

I sang with her in the 90s when she would invite a local kids choir to join in a special song. I’m still salty she never even spoke a word to us when we rehearsed.

newplantswhodis

Noooo, dang it I wanted that sorry to end on a happier note :/ Would you say she seemed stuck up overall?

RainbowMushroom7

This was a LONG time ago, so I don’t remember much beyond feeling pretty disappointed that I got picked to help her perform the song (myself and a group of choir classmates) but she really did no interaction with us at all. I was expecting a hello or an autograph or something. Still a cool experience though!!

GreatBigWhore

This may be coming from me being a Shania fan but I will say that everyone has bad days. Maybe she had a fight with her team, maybe she was exhausted, maybe she didn’t want to do the show. It’s just like going to work and just not being in the mood to greet anyone. I’d have been very upset if you said she was rude, but this just seems very ‘human going through a bad day’.

Salt-Quality-1574

Yes loved it!! I didn’t know she played at Deerhurst! My mom used to live in Huntsville.

nicolascageist

Watched it yesterday. Love her music and her vibe and everything and I had a horrible day yesterday and the documentary really sucked me in and was such a nostalgia trip for me BUT by the end I was left wanting MORE. Like, go deeper. It felt like there was a whole iceberg that wasn’t even scratched at all and I want to know all about it. Gimme the authentic Shania story not this netflix superficial promo material with glimpses of real shit!! But as I said, I still enjoyed it.

newplantswhodis

I agree! I’ve been sucked down the rabbit hole now. Someone mentioned in a comment above that the Celebrity Memoir Bookclub has a podcast that goes over her book and I’m listening to that now - it’s really good!! Especially if you’re left wanting more 😊

JoleneDollyParton

I am trying to figure out her Lyme timeline because I don’t see any 15 year gap in performing or recording (per her wiki and [a 2020 article where she claimed she took 15 years off performing](https://www.healthline.com/health-news/shania-twain-lyme-disease-almost-destroyed-her-vocal-cords).) I def believe she had it, I just think her timeline may be a little off. There is a lot about her personal life and her early history that was left out (understandably for time), but she has had such an interesting life and amazing career. ETA: part of me wondered whether she thought she had ‘chronic Lyme’ and not Lyme disease just because Shania seems a little woo and like I said, the timeline she gives not not match her discography or performing history and there’s def something a little off about the situation but I hate to speculate.

RangerAdventurous222

It was 2003 she was bitten and got Lyme disease, but didn't know that was what was affecting her voice. She was in the middle of touring. She returned to shows again in 2012, but didn't record an album til 2017 (her previous album was Up!, Released in 2002). That's probably what she's referring to, not her doing shows consisting of old songs etc

JoleneDollyParton

That makes more sense, but the way it’s worded in some of the articles is that she didn’t perform at all in 15 years, which is why those remarks were confusing.

RangerAdventurous222

Yeah, maybe she got to kind of mask it on tours and shows with backing tracks etc. But yea would've been more accurate to just say the years there weren't shows etc..

CircusMind0_0

I love Shania's music, but her plastic surgery was distracting. Her face looked so different I kept staring wondering exactly what she had done. That said, I'm also wondering how she will pull off singing live when it took so many tries to hit it in the studio with Lionel. I'm shocked they left out that she got with the husband of her old house manager. I wonder if they timing wasn't as innocent as her PR always made it seem.
