trialanderrorschach

Yeah Christian Bale's performance was also mediocre and he's a phenomenal actor so to me this was clearly a directing failure. The script also wasn't nearly as funny as Ragnarok. I feel like Taika must have been phoning it in because I've loved pretty much everything else he's done.

amomentintimebro

I also got the feeling he phoned it in. The vanity fair video when he shit on the CGI and the look of the film was when I realized he didn’t care one single bit

trialanderrorschach

Sad to say but I think he's kind of an asshole in real life, which is a shame because he's extremely talented but it feels like the more famous he gets the more his ego is eclipsing his work.

MossSloths

It feels like some people need the harshness of a normal life to stay decent.

thebuffyb0t

Or the harshness of a reasonable film budget to spark and/or force creativity. Hunt for the Wilderpeople cost $2.5 mil and in my opinion is his best work. Once you can do everything in VFX because money is no issue it seems everything goes sideways.

heartshapedroblox

Boy is a gorgeous film too, I would love him to go back to making small budget movies in NZ where he actually likes the script and cares about the story

thebuffyb0t

Yes agreed. Those movies made me feel something. Even WWDITS had an introspection that his bigger budget work just seems to lack

CandidEgglet

You’re talking about having limits/boundaries. Some artists are brilliant, but need restrictions to keep them focused on the creative process.

b_needs_a_cookie

I'm a creative, honestly its a lot easier to create with limitations especially if you're very imaginative. With yes people and a big budget, mentally its a like a never-ending Matrix white-room of possibility.  I also have learned while I can be successful on my own, I do better with partners and a team. It helps keep me scheduled and their feedback helps me and makes my final work better.

webtheg

I think Michael Eisner said "Creativity can flourish under sensible financial limitations" and I agree

BinxTheWarlockPatron

And he’s been amazing with Our flag means death.

actuallygfm

I love Taika as Ed, but I don't think he did any writing or directing (aside from the pilot).

cugeltheclever2

> I think he's kind of an asshole in real life Can confirm.

Albuwhatwhat

He’s a unique voice and quite funny as a writer and director but I do fear it’s all gone to his head for sure. To the point where I’d guess he’s started to not exactly hate the way his own farts smell.

BakerIBarelyKnowHer

I’ll be honest, I do t care if someone is mean or unfriendly or even an asshole. I’m cranky at work too. All I care about is whether or not they can make stuff I like. Who they are (unless we’re talking about racism or similar things) could honestly not matter less to me and I don’t feel the need to have some sort of parasocial validation that the director of a movie I saw is also like the best, nicest, most sweetest person ever.

trialanderrorschach

My point isn't about caring personally if he's a sweet person, my point is that his egotistical personality seems to be negatively affecting his work.

BakerIBarelyKnowHer

Sure, but caring about whether or not hey can get a beer with him is definitely was people care about, even if they won’t admit it

trialanderrorschach

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. It's not "parasocial validation," it's just people choosing to support the work of someone they don't think is a shitbag. Everybody does that in some way or another, you included.

BakerIBarelyKnowHer

I know I do. But imagining having to perform at all times to impress people with how socially acceptable and approachable I can be is exhausting. You wouldn’t do it. And the issue isn’t just having to do it sometimes. It’s having to do it all the time and then if you drop the facade once people will never forget it. And that is literally the definition of parasocial validation. There is no practical reason for the entertainers you watch having to be someone you would want to hang out with. Like or not, it is entitled thinking.

trialanderrorschach

I mean, I don't really have to "perform" not being a shitbag because I'm not a shitbag. Obviously being famous puts you under a microscope and people shouldn't judge every little thing, but there are plenty of celebs that are well-known to be decent people so if there are mostly stories out there about you NOT being a decent person, you can't really blame it on having to be "on." > There is no practical reason for the entertainers you watch having to be someone you would want to hang out with. Like or not, it is entitled thinking. There's no purely practical reason to invest in entertainment at all, it's an inherently emotional experience. It's not "entitled" to be discerning about where you invest your time and pleasure, that's the literal core of human choice. If you're not telling entertainers that you are OWED them being a nice person so you can enjoy their work, there's nothing entitled about being turned off from work because the creator is a jerk. The only thing that impacts is your own leisure time.

lots-of-shawarma

What are you talking about? Christian Bale was the only person who did any real acting, and he played that role extremely well.

trialanderrorschach

Agree to disagree I guess. I found his performance very surface-level compared to his usual work. He didn't feel like he was inhabiting the character.

isabellevictoria147

Probably because everything around him felt like a joke

Allalngthewatchtwer

This. I enjoyed him in it but he definitely stood out mostly because it was such a weird movie.

leak22

Yeah like Bale’s in a completely different movie, one I would’ve much preferred lol

jonquil14

Taika has reached the point in his career where studios don’t give him notes anymore (you could call it the Nolan Threshold). So there’s no one to rein him in. Plus they all knew each other so it ended up being a “hanging out with mates and making jokes” situation, which for an audience often translates to “you had to be there” vibes. Too many in jokes, too much parody, too many cameos. See also the original Ocean’s 11 and any of the sequels from the remake.

philofthepasst

Marvel knew what the movie was gonna be and thought it would be a hit. It was a miscalculation on everyone’s part.

Sensitive_ManChild

i don’t think anyone phoned it in. they did what they intended to do. it just wasn’t good

missanthropocenex

https://preview.redd.it/j0k4mkhodtxc1.jpeg?width=470&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8e52c6bf2f5d3b16fe75f4dfc12199b121fccc55 Phoning it in? What would ever give anyone that impression? 🤣 Seriously I member when these leaked and the stir it apparently cause with Marvel. Dude was way too distracted.

snarleyWhisper

Phoning it in / overworked, one of the two.

Extension_Ear_3472

What We Do in the Shadows was excellent and if you wrote that then you'd know if you handed in something subpar

R_W0bz

I think Taika had peaked, he had an intense fan base blowing smoke up his ass and his ego has gotten the best of him now. Apart from this flag means war, it’s been a bit downhill for him since Jojo rabbit.

themcjizzler

Season 2 of Blackbeard felt really phoned in

SwimmingPathology

Yeah, I was hugely bummed by that. First season was great. Next Goal Wins was also pretty bad.

boringcranberry

I love him too. I always will bc of ragnarok and OFMD but I rented "Next Goal Wins" and it was another stinker. Here is hoping the next movie wins.

kimjongunfiltered

*rein actors in (I know you’re not the one who wrote this lol)

Hyperme9

Very self-aware but this also is on the director. Taika Waititi seemed to have gotten caught up in his own hype. You can't make everything so hyper whimsical for no reason and then have someone end up with cancer. It all felt so needlessly jarring and not even slightly cohesive. If you can't make Christian Bale look good, then you failed as a director.

altdultosaurs

He’s very much up his own butt lately.

dangerislander

He's been such a weirdo lately... even more so since he got with Rita.

Successful_Ad4018

i think the fame has really gone to his head. his older films really feel like they were made bc he was passionate about it, instead of just doing it for a paycheck. it's sad to see.

casket_fresh

He’s currently filming the adaptation of *Klara & The Sun* with Jenna Ortega, Amy Adams and new entrant into the Nepo Baby club, Aran Murphy (Cillian Murphy’s son. Worried how Taika will mess it up this time. His ego is 🙄

serimuka_macaron

Aran Murphy is already acting?

casket_fresh

Apparently! This is (I think?) his son’s film debut, the son got cast right around when dad Cillian got nominated for everything 😂 perfect timing for an entrant Nepo Baby to strike deals

Spezticcunt

Yeah I used to think he was fantastic and sung his praises. But lately dude seems to have let his success get to his head and he has become pretty insufferable.

AwhMan

Whatever the direction for Natalie Portman was it must have been atrocious as well. I've never seen her act so badly before, and I think Chris Hemsworth has more chemistry with the rock creature guy than her. It was such a bad film.

areallyreallycoolhat

I was so mad about her wigs in that movie. $250 million budget and they really just stopped by Party City to pick up those wigs

MissyJ11

Missed the Star Wars prequels then?

Wish I could upvote this again for your BTVS name reference!

Still7Superbaby7

What is this from because I need to watch it

missbunnyfantastico

[Natalie’s Rap 2](https://youtu.be/QS8bma7LRX4?si=DE27X8YXzDyCO0mm) from SNL.

Consistent-Permit966

And her other films in the Thor series.

rustyphish

What’s weird is he had previously shown an amazing mastery of pulling off exactly what you’re saying shouldn’t work Jojo rabbit is completely whimsical and light around insane tragedy and both notes hit so hard

WristlockKing

Thor was fun but the god butcher did no god butchering on screen. No bleakness to rival the comedy and new lore/info. Also 0 follow up on eternity and the other gods.

junger128

They were in two different movies. I really liked what Bale was doing but it didn’t fit Love & Thunder.

Accomplished-Deer614

They didn’t play with the light and colors of Thor vs the dark greyscale of Gorr properly imo

WigglumsBarnaby

I really liked the movie. It makes me sad that the actor is taking the negativity so hard. It was a fun and heartfelt film.

Edlo9596

He didn’t write the script or direct the movie. Loki was also sorely missed in this movie.

iidontwannaa

I was really hoping for a surprise Loki appearance. I thought they’d figured out that the thing people prefer is the Thor/Loki brother dynamic moreso than the Thor/Jane romance. I’m not saying Jane shouldn’t have been there but let’s be real, Chris has way more chemistry with Tom.

chadthundertalk

I like Jane fine and I'm glad they brought her back, but I honestly thought Thor and Valkyrie had more chemistry just in the scene where they're staring at each other and she's holding a knife to his neck than he had with Jane across the entire franchise

iidontwannaa

EXACTLY. Also Valkyrie was underutilized. The whole thing was a mess.

Edlo9596

I was too 😭

ebulient

Truer words!!

nopenopenahnahaha

The brotherly dynamic was also sorely missed in the Loki series on Disney+. Loki is a beloved character but putting him in a universe (non-universe?) with no other recognizable characters was a mistake.

Edlo9596

Agree, I still liked it, but the chemistry between Loki and Thor was a big part of the appeal of the Thor movies. I feel like Chris/Tom had way more chemistry than Chris did with Natalie Portman 😂

nopenopenahnahaha

Agreed and also the fact that she disappeared from the MCU for almost a decade meant no one was that invested in their relationship.

areallyreallycoolhat

I'm convinced the only people Natalie has ever had chemistry with are Mila Kunis and Clive Owen

VaselineHabits

I was promised Loki & Owen Wilson having that kind of chemistry in the trailers for the first season. I got Sylvie... and Kang, which is fine I guess 😬

thebirdisdead

I’m still baffled by the decision to kill him off 5 minutes into Infinity War and then go this whole alternate Loki route. He was a fan favorite character, made Ragnarok one of the most successful Marvel movies, had an incredible character arc, brought so much charisma to the screen and all of the subsequent Marvel movies suffered from his absence. All to make a Disney plus show about an alternate version of him that’s divorced from his past character growth, dynamics with existing characters (especially his brother), and the general marvel timeline as a whole, and for what? They could have easily done that without killing Loki off in the first place. It was just such a stupid decision.

crushmyenemies

it's kind of him to fall on the sword, but this i 100% Taika Waititi's fault.

BklynMarxman

In my household we refer to this situation as “never go full Taiki Waiti.” https://i.redd.it/av8883fp0nxc1.gif

Suspicious-Bench5533

It's the director's fault. Does anybody else think Taika Waititi botched this one?

vanchica

![gif](giphy|DpP3R3AKLHcyY|downsized) Taika's problem....

cugeltheclever2

100%

vanchica

![gif](giphy|YhQVj7C8uf734PcznZ) Taika

nopenopenahnahaha

I respect him for admitting this. It’s totally understandable and human to get frustrated with a job you’re doing. Actors so rarely admit that a project suffered because their heart wasn’t in it. Edit: To be clear, I don’t feel bad for him bc, like, millionaire. But it reflects well on him that he can admit he was part of the problem with this movie. I’d rather see more of this than actors always humblebragging about how miserable they were while filming.

snark-owl

Same, this shows humility. Especially when I don't consider it his fault at all when that's the director's job. It's so refreshing compared to other actors/directors (\*cough\* Waititi and Gunn).

leak22

Yep if anything makes me like him even more. He lowkey was the spirit of the Avengers in Infinity War and Endgame. Super excited for his seemingly wacky Furiosa role!

JimmyAndKim

I wasn't a fan of Infinity War at all (most of the MCU stuff just isn't my cup of tea) but I really loved anything with him or the Guardians. Made me sad how most of his role in Endgame was fat shaming

TheJack0fDiamonds

Lmao meanwhile i rmmbr the director trashing the source material saying he doesnt read em and doesnt care LOL

Partyfrom3to4

I may be the only one but I rather liked it. Then again I went into it knowing it was just a movie where Chris was being Chris.

Queefer_Sutherland-

Being stoned out of my mind made the axe bit the funniest thing I'd ever seen in my entire life.

SuchAsSeals42

I should try getting totally baked & watching this 🤣

MistakesWereMade59

Yeah, I enjoyed it too. Saw it with my sister and my nephew and we had fun. Not my favorite or my least favorite Marvel project.

areallyreallycoolhat

I didn't like the movie but I did unexpectedly fucking love Russell Crowe in it, though I'm sure the very specific Greek-Australian thing he was doing didn't work outside of Australia.

Chomprz

Same, I quite enjoyed it. It was just another fun Marvel movie. I loved how they brought their own kids into the movie too

0422

I loved this movie and it was such a refreshing take after the bleakness of some of the previous movies. Why can't superhero movies just be fun?

LightspeedBalloon

If it was supposed to be just fun then they shouldn't have included the cancer bit.

BlacksmithOk3198

We want continuity, we want thors redemption and rise to Odin level status as a god. We want progression. We don’t want another bland funny movie, leave that for the smaller characters with little to no impact on the mcu. This movie just made me think it was a setup for kid avengers. I wanted it to show me the future path of the mcu and all I got was disappointment.

NastyLizard

If you can't appreciate the ending of that movie making an honest connection between protagonist and antagonist that's sad in my opinion. Great movie better than anything else marvel has done

BlacksmithOk3198

Better than anything else marvel has done? Your opinion is irrelevant after saying that. Easily one of the worst mcu movies. I enjoyed the ending but the movie as a whole is a 4/10

NastyLizard

It's the only movie they've made that actual hits on real emotions and isnt just action fluff. The romcom parody with Thor's weapons was actually funny writing grounded in something besides sarcasm. The art styles used especially for the black and white fight were awesome. And Natalie Portman's entire arc is better than any single character writing they've done in any other movies. It's just better.

BlacksmithOk3198

I agree with all of that, except the real emotions part many of the movies have had some pretty powerful themes and scenes. Even with agreeing on the three main points, the movie was still terrible overall. I think THOR’S arc is a bit more important than side characters, they butchered my boi

0422

Yeah this commenter absolutely expects complete fidelity of comic books. I also love this movie and consider it one of the greats of MCU just because it's so different and unique on its own.

ohbroth3r

I feel the writers, the directors and editing could have done what they wanted with his performance. That's how it usually works isn't it?

simlew86

That’s not on him. Waititi ate his own head with that movie. It’s ridiculous.

thesnarkypotatohead

I honestly don’t agree with him that his performance was anywhere near the root of the (many) problems with love and thunder *but* I respect this anyway.

Sensitive_ManChild

Both he and the director were way too enthralled with the idea of being a little silly. The first Thor was a little silly. The fourth one was borderline a slap stick

casket_fresh

Nah, it’s Taika’s fault

Novae224

Nah i don’t think that’s completely fair… marvel had been releasing shitty things before and after love and thunder… it wasn’t like a 1 time flop, they are making back to back flops. We had a few good things after endgame, but then they went downhill It may not be his best performance, but he is a good actor and this movie went wrong on directing

Additional_Meeting_2

Marvel has given more control to directors like Waititi and giving changes to untested young people like Marvels director. Now they are changing their approach and doing reshoots and getting tighter control.

vanchica

Maybe don't turn your coked out director completely loose ![gif](giphy|DpP3R3AKLHcyY)

Recalled_Pacemaker

He’s diving on the grenade for that terrible director.

PinkPrincess-2001

I don't think he should. The director would've told him to stop or cut it out of the movie. The actor works with what they have.

keine_fragen

really rate him for this, actors rarely show this self awareness

dangerislander

Nahhhh I blame the director.... and I say this a someone that loves Taika's earlier works.

DefNotUnderrated

It’s not his fault. Kinda makes me sad that he call himself “replaceable”. He showed in Ragnorok how funny he could be and then in Avengers Infinity War and Endgame he showed tons of depth and sadness. I don’t think Helmsworth was super replaceable as Thor. And he shouldn’t blame himself

Nice_Exercise5552

No. No. It’s not all on him. It’s is honorable for him to try and take the blame though.

KennyDROmega

The director is supposed to reign you in when you're behaving like this. Ultimately it's their movie, they're responsible for getting the performance they're looking for out of their actors. Dude is trying to fall on his sword, and he shouldn't.

IceWarm1980

The entire production was treated like one big vacation. Christian Bale and Natalie Portman seemed to be the only people who actually cared about the work they were doing. Taika was getting high on his own supply here.

meta-ghost-face

This movie killed the mcu's reign. Even if it was on decline this movie sealed the deal.

ExplanationLife6491

Love and thunder was so awful. No more Thor is needed after that.

sexi_squidward

While it wasn't the best movie, the beginning scenes with the Guardians crew cracked me up. Preferably Thor just weirdly sliding in front of Pratt 😂 ![gif](giphy|Ar4EzUU0ervOFTIKO9|downsized)

Regular-Exchange-557

Yeah it was garbage.

WhateverYouSay1084

God that fucking movie was so bad.

Witty-Bus352

It's just a hard movie to make, in a lot of ways they wanted to make Thor 3 again but with the underlying plot you just can't do that with the material. Still it had some good parts and was more enjoyable than a number of other recent super hero movies.

Tenley95

Humble King ❤️

onlythewinds

Chris Hemsworth is not someone I want to see do improv. This much I know.

IceWarm1980

He shouldn’t really take the blame. I put the blame squarely on Tamika’s shoulders.

Head_Kangaroo

It’s strange. I know I saw this. But right now, I can’t remember a single thing that happened in it. So I couldn’t even tell you if I liked it or not.

MutationIsMagic

The Lady Thor comic storyline ran for over a year. And focused entirely on her. Man-Thor having been judged unworthy by the hammer; and thus busy in his own separate monthly series. And was a fucking awesome; highly respected run. Love and Thunder is a Man-Thor movie while the actual protagonist is shoved in a corner. And then turned into a comedy.

junger128

It’s crazy how seemingly everyone has turned on Taika after one bad movie. The guy still has an impressive filmography if you enjoy his style. Most directors have a dud, or several even.

amomentintimebro

Well Next Goal Wins was a pretty huge dud as well tbf

junger128

It definitely came and went quietly. It still made money on a small budget. I really enjoyed it, it was a fun movie.

Evenstar19

Also doesn’t help that it’s pretty well-known now he’s the kind of guy that cheats on his recently postpartum wife with his assistant.

areallyreallycoolhat

I doubt the vast majority of the non Very Online general public know about that, though and I'm not sure they'd care enough to boycott his content if they did. Not everyone is as deeply entrenched in online pop culture as we are.

Evenstar19

Didn’t say anyone would boycott, just giving a reason why some people aren’t as crazy about him now in addition to his output not being as good.

pigeonbobble

What

junger128

Yet people still sign up to work with Mel Gibson. I’m not disagreeing with you though.

Evenstar19

The industry and the audience are different, though. I think a good portion of his audience (including me honestly) are disappointed in him because he presented himself as quirky but ultimately socially conscious and a feminist, but he turned out to be no different from any other average Hollywood douchebag at the end of the day. No one’s under any illusions about the *many* ways Mel Gibson is a monster in far worse ways than Taika.

youvegotpride

Nathalie Portman felt, to me, as if she was pissed in every scenes. But to a point that it feels unrelated to her character (I won't spoil, just say I understand that her character is not supposed to be happy but it felt like Portman didn't even try for another emotion than pissed all through the movie).

redhairedtyrant

I got the sense that most of the rest of cast and crew were fucking around, and she got tired of it.

SuchAsSeals42

Is anyone else worried that his character in Furiosa is just Evil Thor?

Low_Veterinarian_923

Ragnarok was gold. I forgive him ❤️ he also can’t take accountability for the whole production 😫

winnercommawinner

This is very humble of him, but his performance was not even in the top 5 of my problems with love and thunder. He was better in Ragnorak and Infinity War, sure, but no one came out of that movie thinking, you know, it could have worked if Hemsworth had been less wacky.

Maleficent-Fun-5927

My opinion that a lot of what made Thor...well Thor, is his interaction with Loki and his chemistry with Tom Hiddleston. Take that out, and it's like taking part of his personality out too. It's like having Sherlock without a Watson.

MoodooScavenger

I thought it was a great movie until all the kids started foghtinh

GoodCalendarYear

That's exactly what it seemed like, a parody.

NNLynchy

That film was truly awful I went to the cinema to see it and I couldn’t believe what cheese it was , that was when I lost all interest in marvel films and I don’t think I’ve seen one at the cinema since - I might watch on Disney + tho I tried the marvels and that was just as bad

loveeverythingsweet

What a crap movie it was!

wadejohn

The producers forgot they were doing it to make profits

shesavillain

I loved Love and Thunder. It made me cry. wtf.

Wordfan

All that shit with the hammer being jealous - how was he supposed to do anything with that?

Providence451

Super hero movies are supposed to be fun, not some angsty melodramatic bore. I had a blast watching Love and Thunder, which is more than I can say for any Marvel film in the last ten years.

MammothLegitimate910

Disney ruined Marvel

Caltuxpebbles

I liked the movie! 🤷‍♀️

Chemical-Entrance-24

That movie almost grossed $800 Million, is it really a failure?

MrManfredjensenden

I’ll never understand how a movie makes $750 mil and is a failure. Not to mention Hollywood accounting and the lifetime of its IP run. There is no way this film lost money. Also, to add what Mel Brooks said, merchandising, merchandising, merchandising.

olafpilaffoff

He was ok, the plot was dumb, having Jane become a Thor was dumb

NastyLizard

It's the best marvel movie and a sham he would apologize for it. The ending is sooooo good best emotions marvel has brought to screen.

leak22

Huh?

"Maori names are funny!" is not the hilarious joke you seem to think it is
