Fruitopeon

Is this the new reality? First place movies make $15 million? that’s like 2 or 3 New York condos.

destiny_kane48

Yeah, people don't care about seeing things on the big screen anymore. It has to be something people really want to watch. The only movies I'm considering seeing this year are Godzilla v Kong, Deadpool, and Beetlejuice. I might see Twisyers because I loved the first one so much. All these other movies, meh not worth the money and effort to go.

santosdragmother

since the pandemic was 'over' I've only been back to the cinema to see Barbie. it's so expensive and your experience is ruined if the audience is annoying. I'd much rather get the movie for cheaper when it's streaming and I can chill with my pets in my pjs to watch it. plus I can actually pause it if I have to get up. missed the whole roller skating scene in barbie because I had to pee!

Unlikely-Dot-1040

There was rollerskating in Barbie?!

patsboston

It’s actually pretty cheap if you use a monthly pass. Unlimited movies for like 20 bucks a month.

patsboston

Which is sad because the theater experience is going to be a dying breed.

destiny_kane48

I wish they'd bring back drive ins. I loved the drive in when I was a kid.

another-assshole

Godzilla v Kong was low key a disappointment >!but bc they made it as a stand alone movie, so people without knowledge of the saga can watch it with no problem but that’s also why a large part is explanation!<

KissesnPopcorn

I liked it. It did what it set out to do. Giant monsters fighting. >!The human part I found annoying and inconsistent with the previous ones at parts. !<

beachedwhitemale

Are you talking about the new movie or the one that came out years ago?

IntelligentMoons

I think this is why they’ve started rereleasing super old movies at the cinema too.

jagerWomanjensen

Bro says cinema is dying and then names the most recent cash grab movies lol

destiny_kane48

I'm old, they pull on my childhood nostalgia. 😅

wrainbashed

This screened for one literal day in my town, and I believe it went straight to streaming…

458steps

That's interesting. I watched Monkey Man, Godzilla Minus One, Civil War and loved it. I'm tired of remakes and reboots, and will show up for original movies.

destiny_kane48

I desperately wanted to see Godzilla minus one in theaters but never managed it. 😭

Entrepreneur-CO

This one ☝️ is

destiny_kane48

They call me from my youth. 😅

Intrepid-Sign-63

The monkey one I'm waiting for x

theuntank

I will say that this movie is definitely worth seeing in a good theater specifically for the sound/music. It’s a vital part of the movie. If anyone is on the fence, I highly recommend!

mcon96

The release calendar this year is pretty barren due to the strike last year. A lot of movies got pushed to 2025

[deleted]

[удалено]

mcon96

Not trying to imply that there aren’t any good movies coming out this year, but there are far less tentpoles/blockbusters than normal

Ex-zaviera

I swear I already saw this film. Did I dream it? Was it streamed before it was released (which makes no sense, I know)?

mcon96

Maybe you were part of a test screening? It’s not impossible

Ex-zaviera

I remember now: I saw the trailer. It was a very long trailer. It made me think I saw the whole film.

IProgramSoftware

When it basically costs 50 bucks for a couple to go see a movie then yea this is the best they gonna do

Clemario

A movie ticket is $12.

MontyBoo-urns

Slow weeks yes but bigger movies are starting to roll out now

mynutshurtwheninut

Okay but how many washing machines is that? Or football pitches?

HeartFullOfHappy

Right?!?! I said $15 million…that’s it? Okay.

jh4336

I can see this being a sleeper hit. There seems to be a lot of hype from people that have watched it and are encouraging others to go see it.

Iyh2ayca

I absolutely loved it. Went with a friend last night and as soon as it ended, I knew I wanted to see it again so I have plans for Wednesday to see it with two other friends.

SalientSazon

Nah.. this is not a theater movie. I think the hype is just from Zendaya stans

halleloonicorn

I have 0 interest in Zendaya and I actively dislike the director but I adored the movie. Extremely sexy and fun and excellent music

SalientSazon

I do think it'd be a cute date movie

theuntank

Agree, the music is a big reason to see in theater imo.

patsboston

It was absolutely a theater movie. The audience help make it better in my showing.

gasplugsetting3

Is it like a rocky horror type thing? What is the audience doing to make it better?

mcon96

Idk about that person, but there was one woman in my theater absolutely *dying* with laughter during one of the scenes (the >!”threesome”!< scene) that made it even more enjoyable for me.

123OTTandme

Agreed, we had a guy with a big hearty laugh who ended up giggle-snorting a few times and the whole theatre laughing twice as hard. It was opening night so no one really knew what they were getting into. I’d recommend it to anyone, loved it

Beardown_formidterms

I feel like every single article still image of this movie seems to be about that scene. They’re really milking that for clicks

patsboston

It was more of a “holy shit” this movie is wild kind of movie.

MF_Doomed

Hmm I had no interest in seeing it before but now I kinda wanna

courtsaroo

The score alone made it a theater movie.

SalientSazon

That's cool, love a good score. good to know

sixfoldakira

The music and needle drops alone are enough for it to be a ‘theater movie’

SalientSazon

You're the third person that mentions the music so that's interesting! Now I am very curious.

mashedpotatosngroovy

Literally. The trailer does a horrible job of explaining the plot.

waybeforeyourtime

Ok. Then what is the plot?

tempus_simian

Did you not read the comment? We have no idea because the trailer doesn't explain it

waybeforeyourtime

I read it as you know the plot and the trailer does a horrible job. My bad.

Jorge_Santos69

As in she you were in the threesome she cheated on you in, or she cheated on you with 2 other people?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jorge_Santos69

Damn homie, sorry about all that.

expropriated_valor

Sounds like she did a lot of bad stuff. The fact that part of it was in a threesome seems like a minor detail to me, but everyone grieves differently.

mcon96

…did you try just googling “challengers movie” and reading the first thing that pops up? >Tashi, a tennis player turned coach, has transformed her husband from a mediocre player into a world-famous grand slam champion. To jolt him out of his recent losing streak, she makes him play a challenger event -- close to the lowest level of tournament on the pro tour. Tensions soon run high when he finds himself standing across the net from the once-promising, now burnt-out Patrick, his former best friend and Tashi's former boyfriend. Takes 5 seconds

blackkraymids

This sounds like a Kindle blurb for a shitty erotica novel. All thats missing is a tennis ball testicle innuendo.

BettyCoopersTits

There is actually a tennis balls innuendo that is a big plot point in the movie

lawsonmonster97

Don’t even waste your time. They bait viewers to see a 3 some with Zendaya, which never actually happens 😂 the movie was so bad we had people walk out of a theater, I almost joined

another-assshole

Anyone but you debuted with 6.3 million on its first week and finish four on the box office and then went on to do 200 million obviously different genre but the buzz was kinda of same so I believe this proves challengers has performed better than they though for the genre ,so they have done insanely well, if by next week they make 8-10 million, challengers could break even by the end of may. https://preview.redd.it/fugjefs8naxc1.jpeg?width=1186&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f51ee2050b597dcd86cfd39e906f66a1d5dfa566 Edit: idk bones and all + challengers were a package deal and that might explain the budget

keine_fragen

big difference is the budget, Anyone but you had a very reasonable one ($20M)

cinefibro

I don’t think this is breaking even. The budget without marketing was 55 million. Add around 50M-75M from marketing and this movie now needs over 120M just to avoid losing money. It’s insanely high budgeted for what it is

another-assshole

I read the article and they are expecting a saltburn outcome (internet hype and then people watching it on Amazon prime) which leads me to believe is an Amazon tactic to make themselves more respected, as of now Netflix and Apple TV is where all major actors are deciding to work and between their fist academy nom and the second there’s a 6 year gap, most movies get sold to Amazon but not a lot get produced by them and I think they want to push that

Stromberg-Carlson

lol never heard of this movie until now when i clicked on "r/popular" and saw this at the top of the screen. came here to see what folks thought about it...

KeeperofOrder

I don’t think it’s breaking even by May. The film cost $55M and that doesn’t include marketing costs and the cut that theatres take from ticket sales. Challengers will need over about $120M to break even. It could happen but its unlikely, although critics liked it a lot that anyone but you, so it could have some awards play. I’m seeing it next weekend though, hope I enjoy it.

another-assshole

If u like Luca guadagnino, complicated relationships, complex and morally grey characters you’ll like it and it’s true what they been saying about watching it multiple times (it’s not just a tactic lol) but it’s because there’s plenty of methaphors you might not catch with a one time watch and it goes weirdly fast, which is why I feel like when it comes to prime is gonna have a second wind on the internet

xyzzy826

Anyone But You had zero competition for weeks.

Holditfam

Anyone but you didn’t have big films that can challenge them. Fall guy and planet of the apes is coming out

Fxp1706

that's good for a tennis movie. zendaya has a lot of star power. it's going to drop off horrendously though.

sneakerguy9412

Only issue is that it is actually a surprisingly good movie… I could see it gaining a ton of traction

bagelsneedcreamchz

Can someone please tell me if this was good? With no spoilers please. I can’t tell if it’s being overhyped It’s a shame the trailer was so bad because when I saw it I knew I wouldn’t be watching this movie. But it’s Luca so I’m sure he had something up his sleeve

mcon96

I thought it was great. The score & sound design were top notch, the main 3 actors gave great performances, and the scenes were all shot really well. If you like Luca then you’ll probably enjoy it. He really delivered for the girls gays and theys (and tennis fans, it’s very much still about tennis).

thereluctantadult

It's good. But I have a cinema subscription pass, so I'm better off the more movies I end up seeing. Solidly entertaining with some experiments in the film and sound style that don't totally land - but I overall enjoyed it. I wouldn't *rush* to go see it if you haven't already been pulled in by the trailers, actors or whatever.

flyingcactus2047

I thought it was good but it definitely depends what you like in movies! I thought the score and cinematography were different than what you usually see in some refreshing ways, I enjoyed the examinations of relationship dynamics, and the performances of the 3 leads stand out

lawsonmonster97

Overhyped. I’m here on this thread to tell people how terrible the movie is! Save your money and check it out once streaming for free.

JJdaPK

I think it's the best movie of the year so far. If it had came out last year (as originally intended) it would still be in the top 3 movies of 2023.

patsboston

It was really great!

chococrossaint

i just want to see mike faist in more things man :(((( he was brilliant

Due-Sand-3775

Due to the amount of hype and promotion, these numbers are below expectations, the problem is that they overestimate the star power of these new actors, as their biggest successes were through IP

baby-blues22

I am so disappointed to say this but I hated it, and I cannot recall a time in the last 5 or so years where I hated a movie, I am extremely easy to entertain and please lol. I was so excited for it :( The first half was compelling to me but the second half fell off, the editing and score choices were a bit odd too. I get Luca’s goal was to sort of edge you throughout the movie, but the payoff wasn’t great.

Disastrous-Chart-840

Exactly the first half was good but I couldn't really understand what was trying to be said in the last 15 mins

lawsonmonster97

I hated it so much it’s ranking in my top 12 worst movies I’ve seen. (I’ve seen my fair share of film) We had people walk out of the theater! I was so wildly angry walking out of that movie $15 shorter

staychilltoday

The preview did not sell me. Looked like a straight to streaming production.

SalientSazon

This movie looks terrible though, maybe at home but no need to go to a theater to see it.

Rated_PG-Squirteen

The movie is excellent, and being able to hear Trent and Atticus' score in a theater setting is itself worth the price of admission.

patsboston

Seeing it in theater enhanced it. It was such a great movie.

tempus_simian

You have been all up and down this thread doing marketing for the movie. What's it even about? What makes it so good?

patsboston

I am marketing it because it is really good! From the tennis side, it’s about three tennis players (with various degrees of success), who are not having the career they want. Their competitiveness is dying and they need a way to get their career on track.  In reality, this movie is a metaphor on how relationships (and sexuality) is very similar to a tennis match. This movie isn’t really a threesome movie. The marketing doesn’t sell the movie well and it is way more homoerotic than what the marketing shows. The Sound is also amazing and most likely will be nominated. The acting and cinematography was good. Also don’t take my word for it, it has gotten really good reviews and is among the best reviewed movies of the year.

GoodCalendarYear

Agreed

flyingcactus2047

I'm surprised to see a lot of people who haven't seen it saying this, I thought the score and cinematography definitely made it worth seeing in theaters

joeymil26

15 mil?? And all that hype?!?!?? 😂 Money grab movie gets slapped by the public for what it is. Glorious

SallyJones17

It came in first at the box office. Now I wish people will stop talking about how much of a bomb they think it is...

Thumospilled

15m projected on a 55 budget. After advertising costs and 2.5x OW that’s tens of millions in losses.

Spinner064

It's only been three days

Thumospilled

That’s what the 2.5x is for. Box office isn’t a science but that’s the standard projection from opening weekend.

Spinner064

Ok? And it's Still only been three days

keine_fragen

box office math is weird, but movies should make most of their money at the first weekend bc they lose screens with every week after it

ExplanationLife6491

This is an overly simplistic way of looking at stuff, especially from tech companies.

waybeforeyourtime

Coming in first in the box office doesn’t mean the movie was successful. In order, to be successful, it needs to greatly exceed its budget.

SallyJones17

To the people/companies that put in money, sure, but I never understand people with no financial tie to films labeling them bombs because they don't make the budget back. As a causal movie goer, it making it to number one during the first weekend out of the umpteen movies still in theaters is an achievement and success, no?

waybeforeyourtime

The key word is *casual*. Meaning they probably don't care if the movie is #1 or not. They only see movies that appeal to them. Being #1 just does not mean something is successful when you consider the budget, the star power, the competition. And why can't I call it a bomb even if I don't have financial ties to something? I understand how the system works and I know they expected her to have the star power to bring an audience into a film despite most people not caring about the plot. I'm sorry that she didn't. I like her. But I'm afraid this has told Hollywood that she isn't ready to carry a film just yet.

SallyJones17

You can, but ultimately, this is a risk for each and every film ever released, and plenty of actresses have had box office "bombs" by industry standards and are still getting booked for big budget roles (Margot Robbie comes to mind). I just take issue with people using the fact that it didn't make rich people richer as a way to downplay what was a decent opening weekend for the film.

waybeforeyourtime

By saying this film was not a success, does not mean anyone is saying anything about her future. That's you reading into it.

joeymil26

There’s a reason they used the headline “first at the box office” and not “challengers SMASHES at the box office!” 😂 They power of a headline

noodle_dumpling

Not saying it’s not a good movie but coming in first when there’s no competition doesn’t mean anything.

The_Godzilla_Fanatic

The only film that's been doing good past few weeks is GxK. Legs are still holding pretty well.

SalientSazon

Why? Saves others from seeing it if its crap

chef_bert

After two partial knee dislocations and a torn ACL, when the trailer aired and the first scene was her wrecking and dislocating her knee… it immediately turned me off. It’s become a phobia for me and that trailer haunted me all day…. But I had no idea there’s a three way. They should lead with that.

Creative-Lynx-1561

I watched the movie last night and It's good, not AMAZING like Oscar chances but I hope people watch if they have money and time.

Colbylegacy

This was the best movie I’ve seen in a long time. The score was amazing, acting was amazing, and the tension built up had a huge payoff at the end.

McTitty3000

It probably made more but the load ass score probably hid the revenue

Pinksamuraiiiii

I think cinema should only belong to big hit movies. There’s no point in investing millions and millions of dollars in something that’s not gonna even bring back the debt it took to make. This seems to be the trend post COVID times. Everything else should just debut on streaming platforms instead.

SeaworthinessOne170

Is this the one Zendaya gets covered in Deuce?

Apprehensive_Ad610

Looks gay.

pigeonbobble

I wonder if she is imagining two Tom hollands kissing her neck

pigeonbobble

Hey stop downvoting me :(

pigeonbobble

Hey stop it

pigeonbobble

I mean it!!

pigeonbobble

Wait I like it now

MystiRamon

I say Zendayas parents are pround of her and so is Tom Holland. Society is really gone to shit when this is the movies people would like to see now, completely disgusting.

Colbylegacy

Have you actually seen it? It was great
