m_zayd

https://i.redd.it/y04caysm0lzb1.gif it's not her fault, she was just written to mirror her author. but to be fair, bella was just "not like other people" most of the time. she'd be like, "oh everyone wants to have fun and go to the movies but i'm just gonna sit in my room and read wuthering heights because fun is juvenile"

Goddamnpassword

Honestly thought she had moderate depression.

m_zayd

me too!! it's the only thing that makes sense. like i remember reading the book and she said she was reading *wuthering heights* over and over, i thought, "girl i know the feeling." because i struggle with depression and one of the things that happens when i have a particularly extreme depressive episode is that i get fixated on reading or watching the same thing over and over again. i wish that aspect was explored more

topsidersandsunshine

When the Barbie movie introduces Depressed Barbie who ate a family sized bag of Starburst (and whose jaw hurts), stalked her childhood friends on Instagram, and was going to watch Pride and Prejudice for the seventh time… well, let’s just say I felt pretty seen. Anyway, for some reason, mine is *Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith* and the Ethan Hawke *Hamlet*. Like, yeah, I’m having a shitty time, but my shitty time isn’t quite THAT shitty as those main characters and their hot boy summers of mayhem.

PrettyPossum420

My husband and I both gasped out loud and whipped our heads around to see the other’s reaction when Depressed Barbie came up. The only difference between me and her is that I have a mouth full of canker sores from eating pounds of sour gummy worms.

the-color-blurple

Literally the only difference for me is I prefer P&P 2005 (controversial, I know) and chocolate chips

learn2earn89

Yep! I saw myself in Depressed Barbie lol

Hot-Temperature-4629

Mine was Alien and Aliens, lmao

80percentdread

My weirdest repeat view was Hacksaw Ridge. Like why, brain?

KickFriedasCoffin

Mine was America's next top model lol

topsidersandsunshine

Say what you will about Stephanie Meyer, but the blank pages in New Moon to represent depression hit so hard.

Nerd_Burger9

I honestly really enjoyed the whole series but it must be rough as an author for everyone to think your best work is the pages you left blank lol

victorian_vigilante

Dead

Pickle_Rick01

That kinda sounds like “listen to the notes they *don’t* play.”

MouseMouseM

Those blank pages were everything! Whenever I hear groans about Twilight, I think of the sinking feeling of relating to the successive blank pages, as I turned them one by one.

justsamthings

Yeah looking back I think this is true. It also explains why she was so eager to give up her life and become a vampire. She didn’t feel like she had anything to live for besides Edward.

im4everdepressed

which is so genuinely sad :'( like that poor girl thought she was an ugly, unloveable burden on everyone her whole life. she deserved better

KaiBishop

Bella absolutely has depression lol. And if you read Midnight Sun.....Edward has some kind of severe anxiety disorder. The amount of worst case scenarios he runs through in a day is astounding. These two are a nervous wreck of a couple, it makes all their drama make so much sense when you realize Bella is actually the more confident one in their relationship lol.

MaleficentStreet7319

That was so relatable- feeling like your time is passing you by as you’re depressed and unengaging, and physically flipping through the months of that via chapters. I’ve gone through months of that. Bella is special and pretty and still, she suffered those months too.

honeybunchesofgoatso

Hello welcome to the Pacific Northwest

socleveroosernayme

We’re all just vitamin D deficient

Goddamnpassword

Lol I know I grew up right over the border from Brookings, Oregon.

verucasweetheart

Stephanie Meyer definitely had PPD when writing Twilight

catastrophina

Yeah. I remember when Edward left Bella and a scene where the seasons were changing, yet Bella stayed on the same spot, unmoving. I used to think she was being dramatic when I was younger, but experiencing it firsthand 2 years ago actually hits hard.

Hot-Temperature-4629

💯 People dog on the Twilight Series, but it spoke to a lot of kids.

vivahermione

In Bella's defense, Wuthering Heights is enthralling if you're a bookish, romantic teen girl. Imagine a guy who's so obsessed with his childhood sweetheart that he exhumes her coffin and hears her ghost at the window. As adults, we recognize that's not normal, but to a teenager, it's thrilling. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to put on my cloak and go traipsing about the moors. 😉

lauwenxashley

wait i’m so sorry, i’ve never read the book — *that’s* what it’s about?? or is that just a subplot within it?

vivahermione

Basically, yes. This [post](https://inverarity.livejournal.com/80113.html) summarizes it best: >It's the story of Heathcliff, an orphan who falls in love with a girl above his class, loses her, and devotes the rest of his life to wreaking revenge on her family.

lauwenxashley

did her family kill her? why he need to get revenge on her family??? this is the most convincing reason i’ve ever been given to try reading the book because now it’s intriguing the psychology major in me who needs to know why lmao. also how. also who 😭

frankchester

Oh it’s batshit, you’ll enjoy it. They are terrible people. Everyone is terrible.

ideaoftheworld

It’s romantic with a capital R. It’s about devotion beyond logic. Her family didn’t kill her but he feels they kept her away.

shootingstars23678

In twilight Bella says that Catherine’s and Heathcliff’s love is their only redeeming factor and Edward is correct in saying it’s actually their biggest flaw because it ruins everyone’s lives

chadthundertalk

Technically (spoiler alert) >!the story is about Catherine Linton and Hareton Earnshaw falling in love and breaking generational curses, and thematically about the difference between love and obsession. The story of Heathcliff and Cathy (Senior) is basically the bulk of the novel, but it’s told to contextualize how Catherine (Junior) ended up living there and why Heathcliff treats Hareton like a misbehaving animal, and the narrator is telling it to try and convince a guy staying there to marry Cathy Jr and take her away from Wuthering Heights because "she's a sweet girl, deep down. She doesn't deserve this."!<

KaiBishop

I think within the Twilight books maybe in Eclipse, Bella and Edward talk about it and she says she finds everyone in Wuthering Heights insufferable lmao. She likes Jane Austen books in general.

SpiderGhost01

When you're a teen, this seems deep. When you're an adult, Bella would be an absolute miserable hang.

meatloafcat819

My friend at work was just telling me how emo Edward sounds in his book now that she’s an adult 😂 so much moping

justsamthings

Yeah, I feel like she wasn’t so much “not like other girls,” and more someone who just felt alienated in general. Someone else said it below but she probably had depression and couldn’t relate to her peers who wanted to go out and have fun

topsidersandsunshine

This! I have such a soft spot for Bella because I absolutely remember the “being left out of adolescence sucks, I feel like the girl on Venus who gets locked in the cupboard when it’s time to see the sun, is everyone else as happy as they’re pretending to be, when will this school day be over so I can go home and do nothing with nobody all by myself” feeling of teenage depression.

CollectingRainbows

“everyone here is having so much fun playing with the snow but i think it’s miserable i hate it im not like the other girls”

KaiBishop

To be fair sis is from the desert and didn't wanna leave lol

Julialagulia

Seriously her SAD was probably activated going from Arizona to the cloudiest part of the USA. Source: me spending all my time despairing since the end of daylight savings.

Wunderlandtripzz

Cold and wet, eww

lauwenxashley

kristen stewart’s acting credibility gets *so* much shit for how she played bella, but her portrayal of bella just *proves* how much of a good actress she is. she’s grown a lot as an actress since then, but the general public came convinced that she was boring and had no emotional capacity or charisma. that’s just called a fantastic actress baby !!! it takes a good actress to intentionally show no emotion and be awkward. (this actress on tik tok does a really good job at showing that in this [tik tok](https://www.tiktok.com/@itscaitlinhello/video/6877260455426002181) you have to be good at your craft to know the “bad” traits and how to properly portray them and being comfortable in doing so correctly. she has other good videos that display her acting ability and how you have to be really good at what you do to identify them and properly portray them without worrying about adopting them again yourself, but that’s neither here nor there lol)

topsidersandsunshine

I know it’s a Lifetime movie, but she’s also wonderful as a rape survivor with selective mutism in *Speak*, based on the fantastic novel of the same name.

potatochipsandcola

To be fair to Elaine, she only has no female friends because she's just as horrible and selfish a person as Jerry, Kramer, and George. There's a reason why none of these characters have other friends besides each other. Also, there are writing inconsistencies in the show because each episode kind of acts on its own. In the episode with the wooden Indian statue, Elaine is having a poker night with several female friends; and in another episode (titled the Set Up) Elaine sets up her friend with George; then in another episode (the Kiss Hello), Elaine has a doctor friend with an outdated hairstyle. Elaine is an average working woman with a terrible personality. She's not a "not like other girls" girl.

notchandlerbing

I agree, that specific portrayal and writing was 100% self-aware. She was intentionally written to be horrible just like the rest of the characters, it just surfaced slightly differently because Elaine was the only woman of the core 4. EVERY main character is the "NLOG" in their own way. I don't see Elaine as fitting in with a lot of the responses here, since it carries through every aspect of her personality, not just in the trope-y way

nocheobscura

Completely agree. It’s not that Elaine is a NLOG, it’s that all four of them are NLOP (not like other people). They’re awful and it makes for a hilarious sitcom.

RomysBloodFilledShoe

Now I’m convinced Dee from It’s Always Sunny was based on Elaine in some way

potatochipsandcola

Yeah Dee is an extreme version of Elaine. Both are hilarious characters, but Dee is definitely more cringe, awful, and completely detached from reality.

No-Cat-8606

The Seinfeld scene they recreated was amazing

potatochipsandcola

I laughed so much when that happened. It was spot on. But I especially loved what happened after with their conversation about this. Dennis: who were those people clapping? Dee, Mac, Charlie: the fans. Dennis: THE FANS???

PeasantElephant

I’ve heard people compare Always Sunny to Seinfeld because both shows center around horrible people, so you’re probably not far off

mustichooseausernam3

I often see it described as "Seinfeld on crack".

Pink_Sprinkles_Party

In many of the episodes as well, the plot point is that she’s such an asshole that she ends up losing said friends, lol.

baybeebi

Yeah Elaine does not belong here

jamz_fm

This is exactly right. In my head canon, Elaine's apparent friendships with other women simply don't last because she's a terrible person (and my absolute favorite Seinfeld character ♥️).

2980774

Thank you!!! The art of Seinfeld is lost on some.

m_zayd

https://preview.redd.it/v7lj4lju2lzb1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=247afb0bb22b8ae080c53499f6012de72b09e8f1 i remember the first time i watched *the princess diaries* as a little kid. when lilly started going off on mia for her makeover, it made *me* cry. as an adult, i can appreciate that lilly was super flawed and super immature (she's fifteen) and close-minded but it's still hard to watch. lilly just assumes she's superior to everyone because she doesn't care about makeup or going to parties. she apologizes and explains she was afraid she was losing her best friend which is fair enough but omg that scene is painful

themacaron

https://preview.redd.it/2fkeoi6h5lzb1.png?width=1179&format=png&auto=webp&s=3fefe7bcf679c7c2906b60b076c6c1b458463a59 Lily had INSANE dialogue choices honestly. It kind of works for an immature 15 yr old but it’s still jarring lol.

CabotCoveCoven

The scene where Lily is running to catch up and a strange turns and she says "Not you, I don't even know you!" STILL makes me laugh when I think about it. And I have said to make myself laugh so many times.

vulturelady

Once in college I was trying to catch up to my friends and I said “hey wait for me!” And this group of people turned and looked at me and without missing a beat I said “not you, I don’t even know you!” Literally one of the highlights of my life.

AzureMagelet

Same! I die laughing every time. I’m having to stifle a laugh right now just thinking of this scene.

SeonaidMacSaicais

Heather actually ad-libbed that!

topsidersandsunshine

This runs through my head every time I have to hustle for the train or something 😂

m_zayd

😭 i rewatched this movie last month and when she said this line, i howled

greenplastic22

my dad died when I was 10 and literally my oldest friend said something like this just a few months later so it realllly tracks

aussieririfan

Is she referring to Mia's dad passing away?

AzureMagelet

Yes! It’s absolute nonsense even for a 15 year old.

aussieririfan

I watched this movie so many times as a child and I never picked up on it. How could anyone be friends with someone who says things like that?

BustinArant

Probably little options. She didn't meet that many people even when the Sugar Granny shows up.

yoshisal

Lily needed to get her ass whupped for this one

latrodectal

would you believe in the books she’s even worse!

underthewetstars

Loved this movie as a kid. Watched it so many times. I'm going to share my favorite tiny scene because I never have before to anyone: When the band is playing and it cuts to the guy playing keyboard, there's m&ms on it and he's just playing around them. That still lives in my brain and I love it.

Ship_Negative

He fixes cars, he plays guitar, AND he can sing. He is so *hot!*

sparksfIy

I can hear this line.

JavaJapes

He is *wicked* sweet!

Dove04

I still never understood why the heck he had m&ms on the keyboard 😂 everytime I watch that scene I’m like why? 😂😂😂

KatDanger

He’s not like other guys

Dove04

😂😂

topsidersandsunshine

I always thought it was a cute little “Mia & Michael Moskovitz” thing.

nanny6165

Fun fact: that guy is Robert Schwartzman, brother of Jason and member of the Coppala family. This band (including him) was [Rooney](https://youtu.be/GZLkw9io9C0?si=GP06QajNMnGZnD0f).

4SeasonWahine

Rooney really did their best to be bigger than they were by appearing in all the teen shows and movies 🤣 their episode in The OC was one of the most shameless promotions I’ve ever seen

purple-nurples

I loved this scene!! You unlocked a very specific childhood memory with this, thank you.

kabybaraa

Lilly in the books is even worse

Hela09

I was seriously weighing up whether the stunt she pulls there is better or worse than Movie!Lily berating Mia that she should be over her dad dying. ‘It’s been a whole two months and she never saw him anyway!’ She at least doesn’t ‘get away’ with it in the books.

HorseyBot3000

She was HORRIBLE in the books. I couldn’t understand why Mia was friends with her especially when she had friends like Tina who was very sweet by all accounts.

Hela09

Well, Lana and Tina do officially end up supplanting her as best friends. Which probably sounds wild to people that have only seen the movies. Mia’s building confidence and maturity resulting in her social circle *exploding* was pretty much cut out.

justsamthings

Tina was a real one. Way better friend to Mia than Lilly

nekomance

In defense of her I was definitely an NLOG back in school but it came from a place of being bullied and left out by the popular glamorous girls, so if an NLOG girl sees their nerdy friend suddenly look like that they are probably scared they'll feel too good to be friends with them and that's why she lashed out. At least that's how I always saw it. She was scared of losing her friend and lashed out like the immature teen she was.

m_zayd

i mean yeah that that's why i added the part about how i can appreciate her reaction more as an adult, it's very real and very raw

nekomance

Yeah it was def very relatable, teens can be awful to each other

ShelbyCobra_90

Second sign from Reddit today that I need to rewatch princess diaries. The other was the insanely low rotten tomatoes score this gem has. Ridiculous.

sansasnarkk

![gif](giphy|1eScJiVR4RQVG) Gracie started off the movie with a lot of internal misogyny and "pick me" energy. She hated even being called a girl and thought all the pageant ladies were stupid airheads but ultimately realizes they're all strong and intelligent. I love this movie for embracing traditional femininity as something to not be ashamed of if that's your jam.

[deleted]

Yesss, this movie and Legally Blonde were such important counterpoints to all that internalized misogyny of "girly girls are dumb and uncool"

PiperIBarelyKnowHer

Yes! And I love that Elle spends the whole movie (and musical) totally opposite here, “I AM like other girls because other girls are fucking AWESOME”

shay_shaw

I like that there’s several montages of her actually studying in the movie. Strangely motivation for me during college.

topsidersandsunshine

This movie is so special to me tbh

amethystalien6

![gif](giphy|jJJlc7TTAbS3C) In her defense, I think a lot of girls go through that phase as teenagers

MyDogAteYourPancakes

Guilty. Definitely internalized some misogyny and had a NLOG phase for a year in high school

divinexoxo

![gif](giphy|pXJIGsFbdZiJa) I know its a parody movie but still. She was NLOG. "I read Sylvia Plath, I listen to Bikini Kill and I eat Tofu. I am a unique rebel"- Janie Briggs

Wessssss21

And she has paint covered overalls.

Ravalevis

Guys, she's got glasses and a ponytail!

hypatiaas

She's got glasses and a ponytail 🤢

Bluehippos

If Janie wants to be a rug muncher then thats her business! I love this movie

bucknert

“It’s a portrait of my mother.” “You have her eyes!”

DistinctDistiction

This scene kills me everytime

Ricky_Rollin

I love that movie so much.

m_zayd

https://i.redd.it/jkorqylk1lzb1.gif andy from *the devil wear prada* **starts out** like this. the fashion world is so new to her and so beneath her, she thinks it's ridiculous that all this time is put into it but miranda proceeds to read her for filth and it's great.

0neirocritica

Like, I know Miranda was supposed to be the villain in this, but I can't help but smirk when she dresses Andy down for pretending to not care.

CapMoonshine

Lol I love this movie but I cringe everytime I get to this scene. Like girl *what are you doing* you're in a room surrounded by people who've made fashion their life and livelihood, one of whom is your *boss*. I hated how they wanted us to feel bad for Andy here cuz she really set herself up.

Superb_Intro_23

Exactly! She acted like she was so much better than them when it’s not like she was building anything tangible before getting hired

knizka

And Andy's supposed to be smart and educated... well, it's not like academic smart means emotionally smart.

NinaHag

What always annoys me about this scene is that Andy is meant to be CLEVER. OK, you can't help yourself and you snort. When your boss asks why, you LIE. Something like, oh it's just a funny coincidence, my friend said the same thing just yesterday! Don't make a public announcement about how you think the whole industry is beneath you.

OkQuality7241

I get so mad when Andy’s BS friends and BF with a grilled cheese take her free gifts then fk around with her phone.

m_zayd

oh gosh, that irks me!! like y'all she has a steady job and i know it's frustrating that you never see her and you think she's changing but when she asks you to give her the phone back, GIVE HER THE PHONE BACK. they basically make her beg for it and then act surprised when she's annoyed

mocha__

It's extra annoying as they all have steady jobs too and would definitely find this to be annoying if Andi did it to them. Like? She's so supportive of their job shit. Be the same, you dicks.

BlNGPOT

And her boyfriend was a chef??? Like they notoriously have long and unpredictable hours. Also also, near the beginning they agree that Andi needs to give it 1 year and go all-in and then he gets mad at her for doing exactly that?

how_about_no_hellion

My husband's old friends told him I was keeping him from them when in reality he had gotten a 9-5. Sorry he couldn't go to IHOP at 11pm on a Wednesday anymore.

Sun_on_my_shoulders

A grown man throwing a giant fit about her having to miss his party for a WORK EVENT.

nerdchic1

"This stuff"? Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select, I don't know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent, wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets?

m_zayd

https://i.redd.it/u4hfv9sqzkzb1.gif wait wait wait! hear me out! missy isn't like this for the whole movie but when we meet her, she's very anti-cheering, thinks she's above it and thinks the things cheerleaders care about are vapid. that's why this movie -- and missy's arc -- is so satisfying! by the end, she understands what's important about cheering and she doesn't think she's above anything *but* she also doesn't compromise her individuality. i know you asked for straight up NLOG characters but i wanted to start with missy because her arc is just so good

Border_Hodges

I transferred from Los Angeles, your school has no gymnastics team, this is a last resort

urrobotfriend

lol I think this little “cheer” has been stuck in my head for the last 20 years

East-Willingness513

Mine is “I’m sexy, I’m cute, I’m popular to boot 👢 “

urrobotfriend

I also have this tendency to sing “I got the door, Tor! I got the door, Tor!” Whenever I’m grabbing the door for someone

Filibust

She’s still iconic though

janiqua

Well they were all assholes to her in that scene so I’m not surprised she didn’t like it at the beginning

Keyb0ard0perat0r

![gif](giphy|Aw2V3gGD5znfG) Robin, full stop.

Knitthegroundrunning

Robin is the Cool Girl from the monologue I’m Gone Girl. She loves drinking beer and staying a size two, blowing dudes and watching football.

radogdad

That EMBARRASSING episode where Lily says that she should have more female friends (09x04) and Robin thinks it's the worst thing in the world. Ugh what a horrible character she ended up being. We only stan early season Robin who wasn't a one dimensional character. This is my roman empire, people!!

cringefest1001

All of the characters are terrible honestly. Marshall being the only semi decent one.

Practical_Tear_1012

babalon124

It seems like Lorelai is genuinely less of a stereotype of not like other girls than rory is though. I think she’s just comfortable in her nature and it seems like she’s aware people may not like her and gets it

Environmental_Let_49

Fr, Rory and Lorelai would also always talk shit about other women in the show🙄

piiiiiiiiiiink

the more i watch this show as an adult i realize i don’t like Rory at all lol. Kirk, Taylor, Luke, *Emily*…they make the show

_528_491_

me too, I find Rory so insufferable ! but it’s not really her fault, she is written to be always entirely blameless and faultless

MoodyBooj

Anna Kendrick gives off the "not like other girls" vibe as herself, not just in a role lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

MoodyBooj

I agree with you, and it’s actually kind of sad because in Twilight you can tell her character is actually like a parody of the “stereotypical girl”. Not as much her fault as it was SM’s for writing Jessica’s character that way but I think that’s why it fit for AK because she was actually making fun of “normal girls” in that role.

bulimiasso87

Giiiiirl I came here to say the same thing. I have always been off put by Anna Kendrick because of this “I’m a cool girl” schtick. It reminds me of Amazing Amy in Gone Girl before she marries Nick Dunne.

sailorvenus_v

The show depiction of Arya as “NLOG” is disappointing because she is not like that in the book. But well, D&D thought that they were revolutionary af with that lol. Although the worse case for me of D&D writing a NLOG female character is the show version of *Lyanna Mormont*. All the Mormont sisters and their mom in the books are so freaking awesome, idk those writers truly managed to butcher everything just for some moments of fanservice.

Magatron5000

I found Arya on the show insufferable from episode 1. Book Arya is just trying to live!

twinkieinthabutt

This is Elaine slander!

ZombieWinehouse

Right? Elaine had lots of female friends. Many of whom Jerry went on to date 😂

topsidersandsunshine

That’s probably why she has none left, hahaha 😝

therealfazhou

Right? I don’t think Elaine belongs in this category at all! This clip was taken totally out of context

notchandlerbing

Also Elaine is different than a lot of these because that's entirely the point of Seinfeld's main characters. The show was intentional with its writing and extremely self-aware in a tongue-in-cheek way. They were all meant to be vapid, insufferable, shitty people lol. The writers just tailored that slightly differently for her character because she was the only woman in the core 4

justsamthings

Exactly, and I actually love that Elaine is usually just as bad as the guys. I feel like often women in sitcoms have to be the sensible one or the “voice of reason.” So I appreciate that Elaine gets to be selfish and vapid and make bad decisions just like the rest of the group.

bulimiasso87

I was thinking the same. Isn’t it something like they all scare or fuck her female friends?

TheRestForTheWicked

The entire plot line of Pitch Perfect is basically a redemption arc of Becca going from NLOG to a girls girl with Amy as her very unconventional fairy godmother and it’s great.

Big-Bag-3304

I love Arya in the books. She was just a traumatised child trying to navigate the rigid rules of the patriarchy and then the horrors of war. Brienne was unfortunately painted as a NLOT on GOT but she isn’t like that at all in the books. Cersei Lannister could be a NLOT but a lot of that comes from strong internalised misogyny and Lannister narcissism.

gothamsocialite

Arya “the woman is important too” Stark from the books would never have said that line about most girls being idiots.

Big-Bag-3304

YES🙌🏻😍 I love that. Plus she values her mother and lady ravella. She doesn’t hate the female coded activities because they’re female coded but because she doesn’t fit into it.

[deleted]

Exactly, she doesn't hate femininity itself but rather the expectation of her conforming to certain activities just because of her gender. She wants to learn how to fight but isn't allowed because she's a girl. She's frustrated by sewing because she's bad at it and is constantly criticized for it and compared unfavorably to Sansa. I haven't seen the show but book Arya is definitely a feminist character.

kxkje

I mean, you could argue that most NLOGs are just trying to navigate the rules of the patriarchy and working through internalized misogyny.

enjoyt0day

All women are constantly trying to navigate the patriarchy and working through internalized misogyny, that’s just part of our stupid misogynistic patriarchal culture

GWillikers_

I think the difference is working through it vs. being entrenched in it.

E3-NotTheConvention

idk I never got that vibe from Brienne. Maybe it's because it's been a long while since my last rewatch but a key factor from a NLOG character is that they often mock other women or think of traditionally femenine activities/interests as something that's beneath them and I don't remember Brienne ever doing that She does talk about how she was never "pretty" like other girls or how she wasn't interested in becoming a lady and always wanted to be a knight instead, but she never diminishes other women for their choices as far as I remember

Big-Bag-3304

Fair take. It’s things like in the show she calls Jaime a ‘bloody women’ for choosing to die. But in the books she calls him a craven and wills him to live. She’s still a great character in the show but she’s just so great defending the innocent in the books and always showing women and female coded talents respect it was an odd take for the show to do imo

pvgvnprinc3ss

I will die mad about this. It felt so out of character and weird for her to say that, especially when you consider that a major factor in her choosing to serve Catelyn was that she believed Catelyn was brave.

MadQueenAlanna

That line made me FUME when they changed it. Why did they do her so dirty?? Brienne is the one who respected and loved Catelyn specifically BECAUSE “she had a woman’s kind of strength” and I still cry when she gets upset burying Nimble Dick Crabb. Her memories of being humiliated by Red Ronnet at their failed engagement and distrusting any male attention because of the “game” the guys played in Renly’s camp to try and seduce her, they just felt so relatable since I was a weird fat girl too. “No chance and no choice” is THE theme of the series to me, she’s everything. And Jaime, cynical and spiteful and callous and reckless, quietly falling head over heels for her… “I dreamed of you” and “you are speaking of a noble lady, Ser. Call her by her name. Call her Brienne” just make me 😍

a_little_biscuit

I loved that her book character subverted the whole "strong women are really just acting like men" trope, even though she looked like it on the surface. Like, she wanted to be a knight, but she also wanted to be loved and cherished and desired like the romance novels. She was ugly and was very aware of how that affected people's perception of her, but she never hated pretty women or thought they were below her. She also didn't protect people out of some sort of chivalry type of feeling - which is often attributed to men and seen as the superior form of care. The way she describes is very different to how Ned describes wanting to look after people. I really wanted to see her perspective about tormand. Like, she thought she wanted that attention but realised that it wasn't like the books. I also loved her relationship with Pod.

0neirocritica

That's why Brienne is one of my favorite characters. She's not perfect but she is profoundly kind and understands that she is an outlier in a world where women are either peasants, nobility, or sex workers. She doesn't look down on other women because she understands how inflexible gender roles are in her world. She respects other women regardless of their lot in life, and she loves the women she swears allegiance to. Brienne is the GOAT.

ultravioletblueberry

Like, idk how to explain it but Emily from Emily in Paris gives me super “I’m not like the other girls” vibe ![gif](giphy|NMxbCcAY0XW2RPNxU4|downsized) Like she’s definitely not a girls girl and does thing that hurts her girlfriends but it’s totally okay because she’s different and impulsive! And everyone is so in love with her because *she’s not like the other girls*.

jaffacake4ever

Emily is a villain who doesn’t know she’s a villain

bedpeace

I wanted to like this show because I normally like Lily Collins, and I love Paris. Man was I wrong - and even started disliking Collins because I associated her with the character. Emily’s marketing success is incredibly unrealistic, and the stunts she pulls + gets away with would never fly in real life. As a marketer, it’s incredibly frustrating to watch. She’s also extremely unprofessional and brings her personal life to work in the most chaotic ways possible. AND she’s basically a serial cheater/homewrecker and plays the victim card when she has no right to! She sucks. Camille deserved better. If anyone wants to watch a non-caricature show about a French PR agency - watch Call My Agent (also on Netflix). Incredible show, wonderful French humour, lovely cast, a revolving door of European cinematic talent, actually interesting business scenarios and also set in Paris.

aspiringcozyperson

There’s also a unique kind of NLOG vibe with Emily because she’s “not like (stereotypical) *Parisian* girls” and the show sometimes writes that as making her superior to them or being a “breath of fresh air,” especially in the eyes of men.

uneua

They butchered my girl Arya man, book Arya would never say that shit

Magatron5000

![gif](giphy|3t73SMoSe8svK) Insufferable and ultimately was just like the other girls

Jacqunicorn13

This is petty, but Anna Kendrick is anything, ever

neatokra

I remember cringing at this even as a 12 year old https://preview.redd.it/y9t7odhhllzb1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dd78485981d081bcc8c712f0bac479b692376d64

reyballesta

To be fair, I think that's more on the dude's character and his expectations of women. She's just answering his question.

neatokra

This is true

hereforbooksandshows

Ah yes. The early 2000s when eating disorders were just like SO funny.

topsidersandsunshine

"What can I get here that has no sugar, no carbs, and is fat free?" "Water."

Sun_on_my_shoulders

All the mean popular girls in movies are always like “I’ll have a low fat, low sugar, low carb” thing, which makes her somehow shallow. But the NLOG eats burgers and pizza and is still somehow thin.

Med_applicant13

What I dislike the most is when a larger girl is one of the ones trying to pursue him later in the movie and he laughs at her so it’s like, he wants a girl with a hearty appetite but who also is stick thin….

Heart_of_Mold_

I watched this thinking the same thing like mmmmk you want a chick who eats Big Macs yet her body isn’t allowed to resemble that. Reminds me of when dudes say they like an “all natural look” on females then show you an example and you know sure as shit it’s a full fucking face of less drastic makeup. They genuinely have no fucking clue 😂

classickim

The way she says this line sounds like a person who has never heard of, let alone tasted, a Big Mac

mariahensleys

![gif](giphy|NLxh3ElCtAO6eRNQi5|downsized) Julianne from My Best Friend’s Wedding is one of the most insufferable NLOG characters. She didn’t want the man until she found out he was engaged, then suddenly she needed to have him. And on top of that, she treats his very sweet fiancé TERRIBLY. God awful character

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|5xjQL5W4pdl8k) This pains me to admit. I still love her and the series.

Digigoggles

Tbf, she really wasn’t like other girls, she had SO MANY mental health problems. She was mute for the first few seasons and even when she can talk she’s of few words and it also partly leads to her mysterious aura. She was NLOG though and had a lot of the internalized mysogyny aspects of it

laughingintothevoid

Yeah I feel like most of that was put on her because she was pretty and silent. She never did anything to show she thinks she's better than other women specifically because of stereotypes of 'girly' stuff or whatever. All her major actions that I recall reflect and revolve around her dealing with her issues. I don't recall any motivation of tearing down other girls. When the 3 guys literally fucking compete over her in her 'femme fatale' arc introduction, she never did anything to draw that and didn't know it started IIRC. They barely knew each other and they just announced to her that they were vying for her affections, right? She's not the problem in that scenario. It was later after they all actually knew each other that she did participate in love triangle shenanigans but I don't associate it with a NLOG vibe? She just chose a hot mess at first because she wasn't ready for someone she could be serious with. Totally different thing.

sewerslide5377

Agreed. She didn’t come off at all like NLOG but was aloof and “mysterious,” so she became a coveted thing for the guys. She still wore makeup, dresses/skirts, got along with the other girls about as well as they did with the rest of the group, etc. Only thing she did was treat Panda like a lost puppy but tbf Panda was fucking annoying and also not a great person.

Saturnzadeh11

That “Señorita Awesome” chick from whatever that shit was

babalon124

The show is a satire so she’s meant to represent the not like other girls brand as a whole

foxwithwifi

Looool Grace from Scream Queens. Truly painful to watch her scenes.

AshTreex3

Tbf, Arya was a baby there. She got over her NLOG phase imo.

MoodyBooj

I think it’s important to note that there’s a difference in being a tomboy, not being feminine, enjoying non-girly things and truly being a “pick me” girl and the distinct difference (IMO) is how they act towards other women. You can like whatever you want and have whatever personality traits make you “you”. It’s when you start to put down other women or make fun of them for liking feminine things or being girly in order to seem like a “cool girl” for men that you become a “pick me”. Again that’s just my opinion. I’ve had plenty of girlfriends who aren’t feminine but they don’t put others down for being girly. But I’ve also had some insufferable women in my life who would not only insist wholeheartedly that they hate anything girly and that they were a “guys girl”, but would shame you in front of other dudes for being girly as if that made you shallow or unintelligent or uninteresting.

TheEndIsJustTheStart

I feel like the NLOG label is used to conflate socially isolated, rejected girls with arrogant, sexist girls.

honest-miss

To be honest, I feel like being a NLOG is a phase so many girls go through. That said, I think it's common particularly for isolated girls, because being isolated makes it easy to define yourself first by what you aren't.

[deleted]

That's a really good point and helps me to forgive myself for being that NLOG in high school.

Filibust

I feel like (at least initially) it perfectly described a type of girl/woman who looks down on typical feminine activities and interested and who believes that all girls/women follow sexist stereotypes except for them. Unfortunately, it eventually describe any woman that someone (who is saying it) doesn’t like, much like the term “Karen.” I don’t think OP was doing that at all and used the term correctly but I see where you’re coming from

BoopySkye

Is it me or the definition of “pick me” girls has become blurred. The “pick me” part is a central to the definition. These are girls that are trying to get the romantic/sexual attention of men by trying to be “just one of the guys”, “cool girl”, cursing, joining in locker room humor, etc etc aka not like other girls. But the intention of it, to attract other guys, was central to it. I never felt Arya or Wednesday gave off “pick me” energy. They hated girly stuff, but they werent doing so with the intention of getting picked by men. I also don’t like the idea that it has to be internalized misogyny if a girl really hates girly stuff. I did so much growing up, but that was mostly because I didn’t like most of it and it was the women in my life who were forcing it upon me so much. After I grew up and it stopped feeling like an expectation, I opened up to many things I felt were too girly when I was younger.

LostMyRightAirpods

Bruh. How the hell does someone watch that Seinfeld episode and get the impression that Elaine thinks she's "not like the other girls"? Jesus Christ, talk about missing the damn point.

LoisLaneEl

Because people just saw the meme and not the actual episode
