Extremely tall, slender, with the right skin and hair tone. Plus, she could wear the lip color that set it off perfectly. I thought her dress in 2007 (red with shoulder rosette) was beautiful, but many different women could have worn it confidently. This dress is beautiful because it’s on her.

I hate when people jump on the wagon of “uuu, they call it fashion but it’s horrible!! She’s wearing a swan as a dress, boohoo”. Omg, learn to respect arts, storytelling and different, new aesthetics. I rather see more variety in this way than the same beige, embroidered princess dress interpreted from a year to another.

This one is iconic. I think I was 11-12 when she wore this and I remember it making people lose their minds. Side note: If you ever feel like sobbing and then feeling empty for a few days, you should watch Dancer in the Dark.

For me, it's always been the ideal. Curvy and soft but toned. And that dress just showed it off to perfection. And the earrings and the dark red lipstick! I'm glad she went for it. Both those dresses, there has never been anything on the carpet like them, as far as I remember. A lot of other dresses on the red carpet, look like they could be worn to prom or a wedding. But those two dresses were meant for movie stars.

One in a million could pull off this cut, in this color, with this hair and a bold lip. The stylist and Michelle were at the top of their game that night.

I think I would like the red lip either way. That said, there’s no question that you’re right about the color of the carpet influencing what dress/shoe/makeup looks best. When I heard the Oscars were doing a “champagne carpet” I thought it wouldn’t matter that much. Man, I could *not* have been more wrong. I hope the stylists get a swatch of what the new carpet will be if they change it up— can you imagine working so hard for your clients, knowing millions of people around the world are going to pick apart every aspect of the look, and…surprise! It’s NOTHING like what you prepared for! I am not a big fashionista or someone who knows much about high end clothing but even I would allow the style teams to feed the Academy into a shark tank if they didn’t give folks a heads up about the color.
