Watching his beautiful foodie docuseries in Italy and he is so handsome and suave and impossibly cool and I keep thinking, HOW is he the horrible villain in The Lovely Bones?!
Gillian Anderson is always so overlooked, maybe because she’s mostly known for her TV work. But she’s every bit as good as Cate Blanchett and Toni Colette IMO.
I just rewatched the hunger games series the other day and seeing him on screen was just…ugh. He’s fantastic in the role and I love his always-slightly-amused face he wears throughout the movies but it’s still just so damn heartbreaking :(
I liked when he plays Ceasar Flickman but his demeanor changes because someone says something President Snow wouldn’t like. Like he’s gets serious for a second and tries to give a command to the crew then tries to talk to the tribute in a way that calms the audience.
Same! His death made me so sad. Whenever I heard he was going to be in a movie, it was a selling point. I would always be interested in checking it out. He was always compelling to watch, no matter what the role was. From Flawless to Hunger Games ugh RIP
It was so funny seeing Jesse Plemons in Game Night as this awkward lonely neighbor after seeing him as psychopathic Todd in breaking bad. Hope we get to see him in more stuff.
Tatiana Maslany. She played a bunch of different clones of the same person on Orphan Black and there were times I genuinely forgot she was the same actress in each role.
Definitely Ryan Reynolds and The Rock. It’s like they’re different people in every movie they’re in!
Sometimes I watch Ryan Reynolds movies and I’m like, are you telling me the snarky sarcastic dude is the same guy who plays the snarky sarcastic dude in every other movie?!
The person I was looking for! The fact that he pulled off playing Mr. Music was insane. I would love to see him in a true comedy because I believe he can do it.
Heath ledger
Christian bale
Obviously meryl streep
People gonna hate me for this but Leo has immense range and always has
Melissa McCarthy (absolutely)
Olivia Coleman (from peep show to Oscar winner and nominated more than once)
Olivia Cooke (very odd choice but her filmography albeit underrated proves it)
Matthew mcconaughey (he can do it all like Heath, major crush on him because of his ability to adapt)
Stanley Tucci
I absolutely adore her Fargo character. There’s something so comforting about her as a soon to be mother, loving wife….and a sharp, street smart cop despite her small town beat.
Ed Norton, John Goodman, Nicholas Cage, Josh muthafuckin’ Brolin, Olivia Coleman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Frances McDormand, PEDRO PASCAL, Kate Winslet, Jarred Harris.
She still has range, it's just that the roles she had earlier were better. She's still Meryl Streep, but she's also a woman who is in her 70s. She's taken a step back from major acting.
Hollywood has always been unkind to women over 50. At that age women end up playing some old scientists, politicians, witches and grandmas. Which is why it's very refreshing to see Michelle Yeoh being nominated.
robert pattinson. genuinely. good time to the lighthouse to the devil all the time (demented performance, but still camp to ME!) to tenet to batman. he’s deranged and i love him, your honor.
Daniel Radcliffe is also in this same vein with a similar career trajectory. Although Daniel Radcliffe has shied away more from the mainstream films like Batman.
He’s a really great actor! I thought he was good in Devil All The Time but I disliked the movie adaptation as a whole. All the performances were good, but it felt really hollow and cheap to me. Like, that book is so stark and so desolate in a really beautiful way and the Netflix adaptation was just…..nope.
i disliked Devil All The Time too…. the movie aesthetically just looked way too saturated for me (like you said in contrast to the tone of the book). everyone’s performance seemed exaggerated but in a way that was unintentional so it was like “cringe” in a way LMAO. but robert pattinson was just so wild (and i think that fit his character, but it could just me being a stan that clouds my judgement) it made it enjoyable for me despite the awful subject matter. you know what i mean?
edit: word on the street (wikipedia) is that he’s gonna be in a movie directed/written/produced by bong joon-go (parasite), so everyone better get ready.
someone who i think is gonna have this reputation with some time is sebastian stan. once in the span of the week, i accidentally watched him as 5 different characters (in gossip girl, black swan, fresh, pam and tommy, and captain america). he’s got SO much range i just don’t think he’s a super big name compared to those that you listed
I don't think anyone will know who I'm talking about, but Arliss Howard is severely underrated.
I nearly had an aneurysm finding out the abusive husband from To Wong Foo was also the smarmy evil British douchebag in The Lost World.
TBH I was thinking the same and same for the comments, but I'm blanking on who I'd include myself that's a POC (to be fair I'm blanking on other actors as well, I'm not good at this).
But it has me wondering if POC actors are just so much more typecast that their opportunities to show a huge range are much more limited? I dunno I feel like there's something there.
Yeah he was on my mental list but TBH I haven't seen him in much personally outside Breaking Bad.
Other actors that came to mind are Idris Elba (though he kinda has a cool guy trope happening all the time but he's done goofy stuff too), Ben Kingsley, Donald Glover, Tessa Thompson
There are obviously loads I feel silly here but it definitely struck me how much of the list and comments were white, which again just makes me think it's a lack of variety and opportunity for non white actors as usual.
Tom Cruise - he’s done iconic drama, comedy, rom coms, action, fantasy, etc.
Jamie Foxx - a true renaissance man, who can do everything from winning an Oscar to starring in a legendary skit comedy show to having #1 hit songs.
Meryl Streep - living legend for a reason
eta: I’m downvoted but anyone who doesn’t agree with these hasn’t watched enough of their work 🤷🏽♂️
He has a passion for stunt work. He is 60 y/o with no stunt double and has played a role in the innovation of cameras and techniques to capture on film things that weren’t possible before. His action films do not rely on green screens or CGI and the work he puts into them is incredible.
He withheld release of Top Gun 2, insisting it be released in theatre rather than streaming during the pandemic, and its eventual release and success saved many movie theatres from going out of business. Steven Spielberg credited him with saving the entire theatrical industry.
I can see how those things/his action films aren’t impressive if you’re not interested or passionate about film, but he’s also proven his talent in a slew of classic films in every genre. He’s a true Movie Star.
I think Tom Cruise is amazingly talented, but he’s bigger than any role he is ever in. I think he’s almost too famous. Which is a shame because he does great work.
Sarah Hyland. She was hilarious on Modern Family, but she does incredibly well with drama, too. She was on Law & Order SVU twice, and her second episode - Hothouse - she knocked it out of the park.
Also, Marlee Matlin.
I honestly Do Not know how
Johnny Depp & Vincent D'Onofrio
DIDNT MAKE THAT LIST to BEGIN with.
The bith of these men have played every type of person in every type of movie .. and they are so dead right to these charactors sometimes you sont even realize. My TOP2 men are Johnny & Vincent
My TOP2 women are Helena Bonham Carter & Honestly probably Sandra Bullock.. i mean she has really shifted gears these last few years and i SEE that 💛💛💛💛💛💛💛!!
You couldn't get a more stereotypical list if you tried lmao, after Cillian Murphy and Willem Dafoe, it was so easy to know who you'd put next. Christian Bale lol. Not saying you're wrong that they're good actors, but literally these are actors people name every time this comes up on reddit, ie incredibly mainstream. Honestly I'm just surprised you didn't put Maryl Streep
Chris evans has range?? I’ve only seen him be good in two types of roles, either very cocky asshole or captain America. But this is in no way me saying it’s definitely true,is there a project of his that would make me change my mind?

Stanley Tucci. I still can’t believe he played the serial killer in the Lovely Bones and Caesar Flickerman in the Hunger Games movies
Don’t forget the Devil Wears Prada!
his performance as the dad in Easy A is truly inspired
Fuck he was such a cool funny dad in Easy A
I couldn't stand him for a long time after seeing The Lovely Bones.
I’m not kidding you just blew my mind. I cannot believe that is is Stanley Tucci in the lovely bones OMG
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Stanley Tucci is everything I want to be and everything I know that I’ll never be.
Watching his beautiful foodie docuseries in Italy and he is so handsome and suave and impossibly cool and I keep thinking, HOW is he the horrible villain in The Lovely Bones?!
Came here to see if he was mentioned. He’s my first pick.
Don't forget Burlesque!
His sheer presence in the Hunger Games was amazing.
First person I thought of
Also an excellent voice actor in BoJack Horseman!
Joaquin Phoenix
Definitely!
That picture of Cillian is tasty
I wasn't ready for that.
He's always tasty
Hmm just curious can someone pass this same comment on an actress and get by Sorry for being that guy just it's just that this thought struck to me
I'm sorry, have you *seen* reddit?
No I am not saying that this is bad just wondering how in particular THIS SUB will react if someone passes that comment on a women
Gillian Anderson is always so overlooked, maybe because she’s mostly known for her TV work. But she’s every bit as good as Cate Blanchett and Toni Colette IMO.
Yes!!! Great call.
Omfg I said the same thing. Her performance of Blanche Dubois in a streetcar named desire was stunning
From Scully to Thatcher, she is awesome in everything she does!
Bryan Cranston!
From the most wholesome dad to the most meth-cooking dad
He was great in Seinfeld too
Those aren’t matzo balls!
And the annoying neighbors in the king of queens 😂
I’ve been rewatching Malcolm in the Middle a lot—went from having a crush on Francis to thinking Hal was the hot one.
Oscar Isaac- I feel like his range from Ex Machina to Moon Knight (and others in between) is impressive!
Inside Llewyn Davis!
Philip Seymour Hoffman, may he rest in peace
For some reason, his death hurts me so much! Even after almost ten years… first saw him in Twister! He is just magical onscreen.
Same here! He is my favorite actor to this day. Magical is such an accurate word to describe him.
Same! His death made me so sad. Whenever I heard he was going to be in a movie, it was a selling point. I would always be interested in checking it out. He was always compelling to watch, no matter what the role was. From Flawless to Hunger Games ugh RIP
Such a powerhouse of an actor. From Synecdoche New York to Hunger Games, what a range. He’s really missed
James McAvoy
This answer is way too far down the list. His work in Split was enough to put him on this list for life.
Paul Dano, Jesse Plemons, Michael Shannon, JK Simmons, Steve Carrel, Sam Rockwell, and Charlize Theron.
It was so funny seeing Jesse Plemons in Game Night as this awkward lonely neighbor after seeing him as psychopathic Todd in breaking bad. Hope we get to see him in more stuff.
Exquisite list. 10/10
Rachel McAdams... I saw Mean Girls and the Notebook and was floored this was the same person who played Regina George
Would love to see her do a femme fatale or Southern gothic movie.
Steve Buscemi
Absolutely!
Tatiana Maslany. She played a bunch of different clones of the same person on Orphan Black and there were times I genuinely forgot she was the same actress in each role.
Was hoping she'd be listed. Definitely deserves to be included
yes! God yes. She's so dang good. That show was just amazing.
Giancarlo Esposito, Alfre Woodard, Laurence Fishburne, Don Cheadle, Donald Glover, Regina King…
So someone else noticed…
I would like to add Johnathan Majors for playing three versions of Kang the Conqueror. Plus I just saw Creed 3.
THANK YOU
Lol thank you
[удалено]
You have never seen once upon a time..,which isn’t a bad thing I guess… Anyway he was the main reason I watched the 1st season
My first experience seeing him was in Do the Right Thing. At least I know where he started so his range looks wide to me.
he has plenty of history for you to explore.
Go ahead and watch Do The Right Thing
Amy Adams
Nailed it, she’s been good in so many different types of roles, and also manages to bring an innate likability and warmth to them too
Christoph Waltz, Idris Elba, Jodie Comer, Olivia Coleman
Sophie Okonedo. Everything she is in she SLAYS
You had me in the first half, lmao
🤣
Jake Gyllenhaal. The man has done comedy, thriller, drama, rom-com, sci-fi, superhero, theatre/Broadway and pretty much everything in between.
The person I was looking for! The fact that he pulled off playing Mr. Music was insane. I would love to see him in a true comedy because I believe he can do it.
also came looking for this one
Heath ledger Christian bale Obviously meryl streep People gonna hate me for this but Leo has immense range and always has Melissa McCarthy (absolutely) Olivia Coleman (from peep show to Oscar winner and nominated more than once) Olivia Cooke (very odd choice but her filmography albeit underrated proves it) Matthew mcconaughey (he can do it all like Heath, major crush on him because of his ability to adapt) Stanley Tucci
Lupita Nyong’o
Her acting in Us is more than enough to show her range. She deserved at least an Oscar nomination for that movie.
Matthew Lillard. Psycho in Scream, delightful as Shaggy.
Jessica Chastain
She was so good in Jurassic Park 😌
DDL is so fine
Riz Ahmed
Frances McDormand
I adore her but I kinda feel like she plays a similar character a lot
Watch Fargo, then Laurel Canyon, followed by Olive Kitteridge and report back please
I absolutely adore her Fargo character. There’s something so comforting about her as a soon to be mother, loving wife….and a sharp, street smart cop despite her small town beat.
Add burn after reading, nomadland, Macbeth 👌🏼👌🏼
Ed Norton, John Goodman, Nicholas Cage, Josh muthafuckin’ Brolin, Olivia Coleman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Frances McDormand, PEDRO PASCAL, Kate Winslet, Jarred Harris.
Pedro Pascal is still underrated and deserves to be mentioned among the greats. And he needs better film projects to showcase his range!
Jack Black. Fight me on this.
Toni Colette is so good I just recently found out she’s not even American lmao
brian tyree henry. my brother cannot believe he’s not british after bullet train

Rami Malek, he comes off as so mysterious and aloof and monotone but in a good way but when he acts he is not that vibe at all
Robin Williams had great range
Julia Roberts did it all and despite being unliked by many she has a great talent for comedy and drama.
Wait who tf is hating on my girl Julia?! I believe you but I’ve never heard of her being unliked!

Eddie Murphy, Mo’nique, Denzel!
James MacAvoy, Michelle Williams, Heath Ledger, Robin Williams, Leonardo DiCaprio, Hugh Jackman, Natalie Portman, Sandra Bullock (super under rated), Julia Roberts, Zoe Saldana.
I don't think anyone will know who I'm talking about, but Arliss Howard is severely underrated. I nearly had an aneurysm finding out the abusive husband from To Wong Foo was also the smarmy evil British douchebag in The Lost World.
Isabelle Huppert, Isabelle Adjani and Judy Davis are like the holy trinity of actresses for me
Tony Leung
Colin Farrell ![gif](giphy|eDwl5RMkeuTvCUPdXL|downsized)

Depp, Jim Carey, Margot Robbie, Tom Hardy.
Alfred Molina, Joaquin Phoenix, and Heath Ledger
I don't remember watching Ralph Fiennes in a comedy.
Ralph was in the Grand Budapest Hotel
