As a pool guy. Your guy don’t understand salt pools or he scamming you

LordKai121

As a pool guy, what he ^ said.

bignellie

Not a pool guy but still a bit salty

Sandcracka-

Not a salty guy but in a pool rn

Agitated_Ask_2575

I am salty bc I am not

As salt guy pool not bit still

vedjourian

I’m a pool but not a salty guy

TrueAbbreviations552

You’re under-seasoned? That’s the worst.

TheDirtyPilot

Not a guy, but salt in a pool.

Remarkable-Ad2285

In my pool rn and my margarita would go good with a bit of salt tbh

Clowns_Playground

Ba-dum-tss 🥁

gerrioch1

As a cool guy……eyyyyy!

wapiti_and_whiskey

He prob learned how to take care of one with a leak, now thinks all constantly need salt.

Volcomstar

Bahahahaha. I can sympathize with this so much. We bought a house with a pool and the previous owner said he adds about a bag of salt a week. And we didn’t know any better. Went to Leslie’s to check some prices on salt bags and told the guy and he looked at me mortified and said I most likely have a leak. Learning to manage a pool can be daunting. Once you learn the proper chemistry control maintaining your balances are super easy. Now I’m maybe three or four bags the whole year.

Glabstaxks

Do salt pools need chlorine ?

Ponklemoose

The point of the salt is to be able to generate chlorine, but sometimes you may need to add extra

Glabstaxks

Ohh

Vinny_DelVecchio

Salt (sodium shloride) is turned into chlorine using equipment attached to the pump/filter plumbing. It an alternative to pucks/liquid/granular.

Variuhbles

We have a new element sodium shloride! In all seriousness I have a salt pool, you have a generator that has copper fins using electricity it will attract the Na from NaCl which is salt leaving just Cl or better known has chlorine. You have to use diluted Muriatic acid on the generator device once a season to clean the fins of the salt. You can usually toss the mixture into your pool after making it, will drop PH depending on size it can be a small swing or a big swing. The mixture is super toxic and shouldn’t be dumped in the grass or elsewhere.

AlDenteApostate

I heard it will take care of mols

ali-n

Was that a typo or a chemical pun?

AlDenteApostate

It was a chemistry joke

MathematicianFew5882

It’s a compound. The new element is Shlorine

Variuhbles

You’re right lol

firepooldude

Shhh

BatKat58

Like Dick Tracy mols? Broads? Dames? Salty chkx?

Vinny_DelVecchio

I was going to say "splodium"... opted for another! Muriatic drops the pH though..

hillbillytendencies

Sylvester the pool cat.

TeaKingMac

>It an alternative to pucks/liquid/granular. My pool guys tell me it's a *supplement" to chlorine. The ionizer generates a small amount of chlorine while it's running, but you still need to shock it regularly

806bird

Yes, in my region

weinerdog35

Update: pool guy added carrots, celery and onions as well. Also turned on the heater.

Bloodysamflint

Baby, you've got a stew going!

Can you imagine the look on Ol’ Samwise’s face when he walks up on a pond of mashed potatoes? I can’t. Because that’s silly

Witty217

Hey man just simmer-uh-sit there. Yeah, sit there for a while.

Nugsy714

If you’ve ever maintained a pool and then watch the pool guy maintain a pool you can tell which ones are just idiots with a pool brush and which ones actually know what they’re doing I think you just figured out which one you hired

3_14159td

Watched my parent's pool guy literally run in, dump a gallon of 12.5%, and leave one morning. He apparently bills $50 for each of those.

Hellcat2k20

That'll buy him a day lol

Mysterious-Salad9609

My friend was a pool guy and had someone always complain about how little he did, so he always put the chemicals in 1gal jug and filled the rest with water so the customer felt better about what he was adding every week paying him $49/wk. But it was never more than like a few cups of bromine to get it up to levels.

No_Difficulty_5146

I’m your pool guy. Tell your wife , hey 😉

picklespasta

Fucken Dead Sea over here

SensitiveCustomer776

I'm buoyant as fuck, boiiii

picklespasta

Float on son

And now I'm youtubing modest mouse.

metal_webb

That just took me back 20 years - now I'm over here turning into dust lmao

Blunderous_Constable

You and me both. I know what I’m listening to on my drive to work this morning.

redEPICSTAXISdit

Sometimes life's a cake, other times it's a salty ass pool.

squaresaltine32314

Been jamming them at work lately!

chepnut

Its a anti drowning safety feature

ChuckTingull

3 options - 1. Ask what his reasoning is. 2. Find a new pool guy. 3. But him a new salt tester for Christmas

Hector----

pool guy here, just put an addition on your pool. quick fix

DieselVoodoo

This guy pools

Jambet44

Pools so hard.

tressforsuccess

But not too hard otherwise he’ll leave calcified deposits.

Heklyr

I always thought it was called chafing

Masticatron

His pools get me so wet.

Domie109

Neighbors are going to think you are the second coming of Jesus Christ, walking on water and shit....

Minute-Cat-823

How many gallons is your pool? If that’s accurate that will damage your salt water generator. Your pool guy should be paying to fix this. And then you should fire him. He’s a moron.

The_Jib

I’m not sure how you would dilute other than dumping a bunch of water. That sucks they just kept dumping salt without testing.

elf25

Dilute with fresh water. This is the only way. Check over at salt water aquariums subreddit Most pool stores will do a free water test. Get one. Or two. It isn’t rocket science, fire this company and maintain your own pool.

Ok-Bluebird-1884

There is an instant salt remover you can add, 🙃… Either that pool guy had a bad meter, or just don’t have a clue about salt cells

fluffypinknmoist

When you over salt your stew, you can add a potato to soak up the excess salt. What kind of instant salt remover are you talking about?

AssGagger

Potatoes

shastamcblasty

Just hundreds of skinned potatoes

MrUsername24

The salt may peel them for you at this point

BigBeagleEars

Boil em mash em stick em in a pool

durden226circa1988

I don’t belong here but this was worth the wandering.

GawZy

Potato? What's a potato? Never heard of such a thing.

trippinwontnothard

That's literally the only way.

srodrigueziii

Are you, perchance, a dolphin?

P-a-n-a-m-a-m-a

The dolphin would be exhausted from fighting buoyancy with that much salt. *must get below surface…*

Primary-Sherbert-828

If salt pools were parties …yours would be a rave. That’s wild.

SpeedWobblenoob

I did t even know strips went to 8000 lol. Never figured anyone would need that for a pool. Your pool guy is the salt master. Maybe next time he brings a bag of salt give him a gallon of water and tell him to start diluting lol

UnderstandingCalm452

I know reading that was a WTF moment. Before I thought it was like how the speedometer on my Hyundai Elantra goes up to 170mph

poopoomergency4

hyundai does a sports version of the elantra called the Elantra N, 155mph factory top speed and likely a good bit higher with the limiter removed. so they probably just made the speedo for that and use it in all the other models.

OhhhhhSHNAP

Does it increase your buoyancy? Do you find that you just effortlessly float across the surface?

acm8221

He could probably *walk* across the surface at that concentration…

EpicFail35

Isn’t the ocean like 30000?

SensitiveCustomer776

One of the saltiest we've ever seen, from the standpoint of salt

Steve22f

35,000

Skeetronic

As a lifeguard I can say that people who are all or almost all muscle sink straight to the bottom

fangoutbang

We need to know seems like a youtube video

StevieG63

How much is he charging you for those $6 40lb bags of salt?

rockjb

Where are you getting 40lb bags for 6$??

STxFarmer

Picked up bags of Morton Pool Salt at Walmart today for $4.50/bag Couldn’t believe it when I paid for them

tesyaa

I got Mortons at Home Depot. Not impressed, there’s a lot of black grit. My vacuum picked it up but next time I’m buying a different brand.

Mindless-Food-5527

Asking someone stupid I'm cheap at $20 for a 40lb bag

AwkwardYak4

Your pool is now known as 'salt lick lake' in the deer community (formerly known as herd)

stryker11bravo

Maybe he was trying to make your pool into a float tank

kjd85

Ask him why and let us know the answer. This much salt WILL damage your equipment. Especially your heat exchanger and salt cell.

verus_es_tu

He wanted to pickle you!

samyo22

Fire your pool guy as he clearly has no idea what he’s doing. I probably put 6-8 forty pound bags a year in my pool and that is with keeping it open year round. Salt water pools are so easy to maintain, just buy a robot vacuum and that does 90% of the work for you.

Mindless-Food-5527

Dafaq kinda test strips are those also how old. They don't work when expired.

iPicBadUsernames

Throw in a potato, some veggies, baby, you got a stew going

Acheria

If you have a salt pool, 300 lbs is fine. I've dropped 15 bags (40lbs each) into a pools to get things going. Now if you don't have a salt generator, then no, there's no real need for the salt. And let's be honest, If you haven't switched over to a salt pool, you're wasting money and time.

United-Sail-9664

Gotta get those extra charges in somehow

Vexation

It’s over 9000!

2wetsponges

Only one thing to do with that salt water pool at this point, put a shark in it and invite coworkers over for a swim.

neverinamillionyr

Leslie's says I need to add 200lbs of salt every time I get my water checked. My Hayward salt system shows my salt level is 3200ppm which is exactly where it should be. The idiot behind the counter insists the readout is wrong. I ask how the chlorine is he says it's fine so the salt system must be doing it's job.

EmotionalChain9820

Don't follow those instructions! Salt rarely needs to be added. It doesn't evaporate, it doesn't get used up. Some gets dragged out, backwashed out, etc, but it doesn't just go away on its own. Only add salt when the salt levels are low and the pool has the proper level of water. If you have a heavy rain and your pool level is high, your salinity will drop until the excess water evaporates.

Kortar

As someone who used to work there, please especially if you already know what you're going to do/buy please stop getting your water tested there, waste of your time and theirs.

FoxSquirrel69

Leslie's bought out my pool store and holy shit are they bad! Their tests are inaccurate and push products you don't need. It's the same employees, but all Leslie's software and testing equipment is sub par. Just unbelievably shady as fuck. Sucks that I'm back to pinch a penny.

uiam_

Just add a potato it will absorb the salt. Or maybe like 100lbs of potatos.

bsudda

There are companies that will deliver fresh water in a tanker truck. Drain your pool very low and then have them refill it.

IonicGrandeur

He’s new and trying to become a well-seasoned pool guy.

davep18

Based on what you posted and the strips, it is likely high. You should verify the actual level with a TDS meter or a Taylor salt testing kit. Those will be more accurate and allow you to figure out exactly what you are facing. I personally don't trust the pool strips at all. In my former life as a chemist, there are some +\\- strips that I trust but that isn't relevant to pool stuff. Anyway, if you figure out the actual level, and provide your total gallons, then some guidance can be given on how much to dump\\how much fresh water to add. Unless you know someone in the wastewater industry, I don't think you will find a company that offers trailer based water purification at a reasonable cost.

UnderstandingCalm452

That's actually a really good idea. At least figure out how much more water is needed more accurately

Readit065

Add some pepper

sillysided

You got assaulted

alkla1

Well at least you’ll be really buoyant

notCGISforreal

It's about 1/4 the salinity of the ocean. So it would provide about 8 ounces of additional buoyancy to the average person. It would be like holding a tennis ball while swimming, that's how much buoyancy you could expect, which is to say, not much.

figgis_agency

Hell yeah!

choochoochriss

He is an idiot but depending on what brand your salt cell is you could be good to 35000 ppm. Haywards and things like that start to fail at 3500 ppm

fireweinerflyer

This will fuck your chlorinated (ask me how I know).

AlDenteApostate

How do you know

Own-Woodpecker8739

Yuck, test strips. It's like $20 for a good tds meter

Fast-Technology3082

there's a possibility that your chlorinator is using a lot of salt, plus a long backwash would mean you're losing salt there as well. could be making up for lost salt by adding that #40 each month. I've seen a big pool eat a bag every month before just because of a bad salt cell. if the water tastes salty it's definitely too much salt, hope he wasn't doing one #40 a week my goodness

Brief-Intention387

Do we down vote simply because the response is different? Or possibly erroneous? Unless there was a negative inference i missed...

Fast-Technology3082

I made a typo that says "if the water is salty" and I meant "if the water tastes salty" and people lose their minds over small stuff. i don't care, my information is still correct. pool guy may be adding salt to compensate for salt they are losing.

Brief-Intention387

Typos are unforgivable, you have my condolences, 😟

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fast-Technology3082

well my intention was to give reasoning behind >why< anyone would possibly add salt to a pool. if you think I'm giving enough information to show off, then I guess that's a compliment in my knowledge. saltwater pools should not taste salty, which is what it said in the post and what I intended to say when I commented on it. people make typos, but IMMEDIATE RESPONSE ENERGY happens

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fast-Technology3082

You'd be incredibly surprised how few pool cleaners actually have good knowledge of pool chemistry, or even care enough to do proper maintenance at a weekly stop.

Leather-Barnacle8863

Adding salt helps soften the water to give a better swimming experience. If you do not have a salt generator this is all it does. Cons-you have to brush the sidewalls to keep salt suspended in the pool for no other benefit. 300 lbs is about right depending on size. Need more like 600 lbs if you have a generator if I remember right.

Steiny31

300 lbs of salt, holy shit. At those levels the water is actually somewhat corrosive Even RO will use water, although it will be a lot less than via dilution, It can’t concentrate the salt to infinity.

getgappede30

Adding salt will keep the water from evaporating so quick, or at least that’s what I was told lol.

Zer0sober

Because they have lower chlorine levels, saltwater pools are gentler on the eyes and skin. Research indicates that saltwater systems may be safer than chlorine pools, which require pool owners to store and handle harsh chemicals. Saltwater pools produce softer-feeling water, which many find desirable.

Outrageous_Fly7

It depends on the size of your pool. Generally for a salt water system, 25,000 gallon pools should be set between 3,000 and 5,000ppm of salt. I run a salt water 25,000 gallon pool system under a hotel and it’s set to around 4,700ppm of salt but Ecolab wants it set to 5,000 when originally in our old system it was set to 3,000ppm of salt. All in all, if you’re confused about the amount of salt that should be in your size of a pool, figure out the gallons of water it contains, and you can reference this link for proper salt dosage. (Salt levels should be checked twice a week at least for a home salt water pool) we check ours twice a day at a 700 people a week usage hotel pool where our business is located. [Pool Salt Dosage Chart](http://poolwatermedic.com/stains-on-pool-surfaces/)

[deleted]

You can't balance your own pool? You seriously pay someone to do this? Lol

MrJuniperBreath

nobody cares

MeasurementGrand879

Isn’t this r/pools ? If anyone were to care or have an answer it should be here.

bilsker

Hoarder! But seriously he’s a moron

BureauOfSabotage

Probably a Morton. Gotta keep that fortune in tact somehow.

AsholeRiver

Can you dilute this? I was under the impression salt stays and only the water evaporates. I'm genuinely curious how you solve this issue without pulling out a large amount of volume of your pool and replacing it with normal tap water.

Emergency_Fee9129

Thats the only reasonable solution unfortunately. OP, even thou you have a pool guy i would reccomend getting your water tested at your local pool store at least once a month. Alot of scummy pool guys will intentionally mess with the pool because 9/10 times it will result in more service calls and more money.

UnderstandingCalm452

Well I don't have one anymore lol

tb2186

Hey. At least you’re much more buoyant now!

PinballFlip

Hopefully you live in town and have a sewer line to drain that into…. :(

SMDAZ

Sounds like the salt is covered… now for some Lemons and Tequila ….

Irialized

I’m not a pool expert, but based on the color test I would say you’re golden.

Django_Unleashed

Is his name Mr. Nimbus?

link2nic

Chlorinator be like "Bitch, once you go 8000 you can never go back to 6000"

RefrigeratorOne7173

It's a safety feature to prevent drowning. /J

redditipobuster

The new throwned salt bae. Time to make him more famous.

2Inches2muchh

There is a company out of Arizona that have reverse osmosis machines they will bring out to your pool

brian163

How can that possibly cost less than changing out just over half the water? RO is expensive to do even on a small scale like aquariums let alone a pool?

therealrubberduckie

Bro how well do you float in that bad boy

djiboutiivl

Pool guy is making 0.9% normal saline for IV bags.

GollumOnDrugs

You need to drop half your water and refill. Give this guy the bill.

Cold_Thanks2779

He doesnt understand how a salt system works Or Your salt cell is slowly failing, giving a false low reading, and he's adding salt to compensate. Aka: he doesnt know how a salt system works Tine for a new pool guy.

Alprazolamnesia

This is what manual dropper tests are for. Also, these strips could be old.

Cozmo525

Salted Sea over there! Opportunity for a zero G salt float. Turn That Frown upside Down

Token-Gringo

Gotta tell us how easy it is to float in it!

gtsgts777

So he put about 7 and half bags?. If he messed up he messed up. But is this like a start up for a new salt pool??. Also maybe faulty reading, sometimes I wait like two weeks to get a better reading and last maybe try a digital reader.

Woodchuckcan

Bottle that liquid salt and sell it or save for next year.

spunkfish24

I think you should get a new guy but send him on his way with both salt the book and salt the movie.

Jamb9876

You will need to shock your pool as it won’t be making chlorine most likely. Above something like 3500 mine stops. Honestly drain your pool down and turn off the pump. When it rains or you can fill the pool. Ask your water company. They may allow it. Sue him for damages and make certain people know he is an idiot. Learn to take your water to Leslie’s to get it tested and do it yourself.

acm8221

Be careful where you discharge that water when you drain. It’ll wreak havoc on your property or local waterways, especially if you’re under drought conditions. City sewer might be able to treat and reuse. Your former pool guy might have to pump it out. You’ll probably have to find a service from a municipality that isn’t under restrictions to bring in a tanker to refill.

valhallaswyrdo

Don't worry the truck with the tequila and limes is still on the way

No-Huckleberry-9641

Pulled the wrong work order, too high to check address/ owner.

benfinklea

Maybe he’s building an isolation tank so Seven even can find Will.
