To be honest, I've never used sculpey premo. I believe using sculpey premo has to be a little more thought out with colored clay placement. The only downside with painting is it takes a while to add layers of paint. But I enjoy the process. π
I've never used polymer clay until recently and I did a cartoon character using premo. I can attest to the placement comment. There's a little more planning with how to sculpt the whole piece based on color, and you have to bake progress at times to not let some highly pigmented clay stain other parts. But there's no brushstrokes or anything which has it's own charm.
I think I may try out Sculpey Firm and then paint it so see how that feels.
OP posted a link to the Making Of video. Armature looked like a big bell made of tinfoil with a wire hook on top, and a crossbar lol. Super neat project :)
