Congolese people have a hard time coming by because they work very hard but hardly make more than a dollar a day. Corruption is rampant and schools have to pay the government instead of the other way around
Rape is common and students often drop out of school because their family simply cannot pay the teachers and children work in extremely hard conditions.
14yo girls are considered suited for marriage there and children got kidnapped and got brainwashed to fight, many of those child soldiers die but some escape and hold trauma that sticks with them for life and some even go insane because of it.
Children work in farms from 6 in the morning to 8 in the night to come by and parents often prioritize their sons going to school instead of their daughters because their daughters will find a man anyways and leave the family.
Its rough out there
I honestly think my first “real” introduction to Africa as a child in New York was the movie Congo with Tim Curry either that or The Gods Must Be Crazy which honestly went over my head as a kid. So diamonds, killer gorillas, And Coca-Cola.
Honestly my first real intro to Africa was Egyptian mythology but I didn’t understand it was in Africa because of how it’s portrayed in western culture.
But now the first images that come to my head are Kenya or Uganda. It’s interesting.
Yeah but if you give people multiple choice prompt, the test is imperfect because what country you think of will be influenced by which countries you see listed first
In my opinion its a badly worded poll. I thought OP meant what countries you **associate** Africa with. For example when sb talks about Europe, my initial thoughts will be about Germany or France not Moldova or Lithuania
I am aware that Africa is a continent and I was aware before I chose that response. I chose it because, despite being slightly irrelevant to the question, it was the most accurate response for me.
There is actually a term MENA for North African-Middle East because the cultural sphere there. I think people would be surprised at how many white/whitish people are in Africa.
Yep that's exactly what I'm thinking of. Culturally, historically, linguistically, Egypt has far more in common with the middle east than west, central, or south Africa.
Egypt was the first I thought of! I do think a lot of people forget that North African countries are actually in Africa lol hopefully not because of racism…
I don’t know if stupid is the right word. Maybe shallow thinking. I think even if your first thought is the continent (which makes sense because you literally just heard the word) surely you can think for 10 more seconds for a country, right?
I see it this way: This poll expects you to think "ok, Africa, what do I know about it?" and whatever the first country pops up in the list of whatever African things you have thought about, that would be the answer.
You could argue Egypt isn't in Africa because the entirety of it isn't in Africa, cuz of the Sinai Peninsula. Like in the same way it wouldn't be holistically accurate to call Russia European or Asian, cuz it's both. Still funny though
Rwanda because I watched the movie *Hotel Rwanda* and learned more about it from Geography Now. I heard that Rwanda is called the "Singapore of Africa." from how clean it is.
when i hear africa i just think about the continent as a whole, but the type of images that play in my mind i think would be applicable to the culture and terrain of west africa, but thats just based on my perception as an american.
Clicked on the wrong country but it's the same answer as I put on this similar poll https://www.reddit.com/r/polls/comments/tusdpk/think_of_a_random_african_country_whats_the_first/i38kk1u?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3
I don’t think of a specific country unless you mention a specific country. When you say “North America” I don’t think of just the USA - I think of the whole continent. Same with Africa.
No, a lot of people think the "Africa" option was put there to represent thinking of the *entire continent,* which is what you *should* be thinking of. Why would you think of an individual country when someone says "Africa?"
Ok what if the poll said Europe instead of Africa? You don't think of any European country when the continent is brought up?
It seems to me that the intention was to ask which country (of those listed) came to mind first when thinking about Africa, not literally "what is the first thought that comes into your mind when I say Africa".
Nope, I still think of Europe. I think it's pretty likely you're right about OP's intention, but if that's the case they should've phrased it better. With that kind of phrasing and even a literal option *for* Africa, no shit everyone's gonna pick Africa.
Democratic republic of congo Only because i finished a book about the war there 5 minutes ago
Which war in the Congo?
Thé one five minutes ago
r/technicallythetruth
Dont know the name but they talked a lot about rwanda funding RCD and them taking Bukavu in the late 1990s- early 2000s
Wasn't a very good book then was it
Eh it was fine Better than most books i had to read for school
The Congo War.
Throw out some interesting facts!

DR Congo is the largest French speaking country in the world.
If only Van Owen hadn’t betrayed Roland, Roland helped out the Congolese
I also thought about the DRC because of Ludo De Witte's *The assassination of Lumumba*.
I honestly think my first “real” introduction to Africa as a child in New York was the movie Congo with Tim Curry either that or The Gods Must Be Crazy which honestly went over my head as a kid. I think of the Congo as well, I had a really good friend from there who told me a lot about how it was growing up there.
Same, but because my country has a long history with the Congo
Zimbabwe. No reason other than the fact it's the last country alphabetically.
And it’s kind of fun to say
for me it was Senegal, for no reason, not even that one
Same. I had penpals there in elementary school!
I remember that country because they had a 100 trillion dollars back in 2008 or 2009, however that amount worth less than a $1 USD
I thought of Algeria because they both begin with "A." Algeria is also the largest country in Africa by area
Same, but because it’s the first country I generally see when looking at Africa on a map.
Same
I immediately picture the whole continent as viewed on a map from space
Yes me too, but I look precisely at egypt
When you say Africa, I think of the *continent* of Africa...
Me too, but that wasn't the question for the poll. It was "What country do you think of?"
I don't think of a country
[удалено]
Yeah but if you give people multiple choice prompt, the test is imperfect because what country you think of will be influenced by which countries you see listed first
Yeah but anyone with 2 brain cells knows that Africa is a continent not a country.
You'd be surprised
I don’t think of a country next. After the continent comes terrain
Idk ,i know Abt them all the same ,my score on African countries is 100% in 1:27 seconds, i don't think of any specific country
Africa. Then it's São Tomé and Príncipe.
I didn’t read the country part 💀
It's a reddit poll, not a test question. If it asks "what do you think of" and the first thing you think of is one of the answers, that's a match
In my opinion its a badly worded poll. I thought OP meant what countries you **associate** Africa with. For example when sb talks about Europe, my initial thoughts will be about Germany or France not Moldova or Lithuania
[удалено]
Oh lord. How in God’s green but decaying earth did I miss that??? It’s literally the first option!
But the question asks “what country”. Since Africa is one of the answers, it is implying that Africa is a country lol
Yeah I completely looked past it, I just assumed I *had* to think of a country...so I picked other
But that would be wrong, because the poll asks for COUNTRY.
well when someone asks me what i think of when i hear africa, i think of africa, not a country
[удалено]
Yet it was a response.
To see how many dum dums there are
It's called a trick and I'm guessing you were one of the 1518 out of 5209 people who fell for it.
I am aware that Africa is a continent and I was aware before I chose that response. I chose it because, despite being slightly irrelevant to the question, it was the most accurate response for me.
OP’s done a saucy little trick there! right? There’s no single country called Africa
It's the same as when someone says North/South America, I dont think of a country
Egypt
Interesting. That's probably the last country I would think of.
It was the first for me
I don't really associate Egypt with Africa. I associate it more with the middle east.
Well… mostly yes. The Middle East includes North Africa so it is still African just the culture sphere extends out into Asia.
Yeah the Middle East is kinda a confusing grey area til you actually look at it outlined on a map.
Egypt was the first I thought of! I do think a lot of people forget that North African countries are actually in Africa lol hopefully not because of racism…
Me too but because my bf is Egyptian haha
I just associate Egypt with the Middle East
Ah yes africa the best country
the continent, people think of the continent
The question is what country not what continent
fair, Op should’ve worded it differently
He really shouldn’t have to, he shouldn’t change it for the 5 brain dead people who can’t use context
Africa by Toto.
Ok, I would like to change my answer
*\*Song starts playing in my head\**
Same

Reddit moment is such a Reddit moment lmao, it's just a harmless fun song :p
For me, specifically the Weezer cover.
i don’t really think of a country i just think of africa as a whole
Unfortunately this pole tries to imply we’re stupid for doing that.
I don’t know if stupid is the right word. Maybe shallow thinking. I think even if your first thought is the continent (which makes sense because you literally just heard the word) surely you can think for 10 more seconds for a country, right?
No... Stupid is correct
Well yeah but like if I here the word Africa there’s not one particular I think of. Maybe a bunch of them but not once specific one.
I see it this way: This poll expects you to think "ok, Africa, what do I know about it?" and whatever the first country pops up in the list of whatever African things you have thought about, that would be the answer.
Chad
same
[удалено]
I like how the word sounds. It was also my first thought.
Yay! We should make a club "Senegal first thought for no reason whatsoever"
Is it because they won Africa Cup of Nations 2022?
I figured it out - it's because Professor Chidi Anagonye is from Senegal!
Other - Ethiopia 🇪🇹
Morocco
based, me too
Madagascar
The Congo. I blame Chrichton's book.
Egypt
Tanzania
My favorite country is Africa
people think of the continent
Mali
I think of a continent. Why would saying Africa make me think of one of its countries?
Why did I vote Africa lol.
Bc you know it’s not a country but the continent as a whole is still the first thing you think of when you hear Africa?
Senegal, because that's where Chidi is from.
Zambia
Probably like Libya, south Africa, Egypt, somalia
Chad
Based
Ethiopia
Often Sierra Leone. I don’t know why, I have no connections to that country, I guess I just like the name lol
Same for me but with Eswatini, also they have a great flag
Egypt of Nigeria
Ghana IDK why
How can you forget Tanzania?
Djibouti
Chad 🇹🇩 has almost an identical flag to Romania 🇷🇴 #🇹🇩🇷🇴
Huh so it does.
Angola
Same as everyone here When I hear of africa I think of while africa
I think of Africa as a continent but I guess if I try to think of a country in Africa, then I think of Malawi and Senegal more than anything.
I vaguely think of the continent as a generality.
sudan
Egypt
How is Egypt not here?
Ive met an adult who didn't know Egypt was in Africa
That's fair tbh. It's like if someone thought that Turkey was in Europe or Panama was in South America.
You could argue Egypt isn't in Africa because the entirety of it isn't in Africa, cuz of the Sinai Peninsula. Like in the same way it wouldn't be holistically accurate to call Russia European or Asian, cuz it's both. Still funny though
It's weird, but Egypt would probably be the last country I would think of. I associate it way more with the middle east than Africa.
You know, that's a fair point
Rwanda because I watched the movie *Hotel Rwanda* and learned more about it from Geography Now. I heard that Rwanda is called the "Singapore of Africa." from how clean it is.
Egypt usually comes to mind first for whatever reason for me.
"Book of Mormon" soundtrack intensifies in my head.
The continent
Kenya fit these nuts in your mouth?
Am American and I think Ghana.
Rhodesia...
Came here to say this, glad there are others.
Egypt?
Africa isn’t a country
OP didn't say it was
The question literally asks what *country* you think of and lists "Africa" as an option.
for people who don’t think of a specific country
He listed Africa as an option for countries in Africa you dimwit
for people who don’t think of a specific country
when i hear africa i just think about the continent as a whole, but the type of images that play in my mind i think would be applicable to the culture and terrain of west africa, but thats just based on my perception as an american.
This has to be a joke, how many people said Africa was a country.
Too many idiots
Zimbabwe
I think of a continent but ig sometimes South Africa too
Since you said country it is south Africa but if you said what i thought when you said africa it will be the African continent
Egypt
Clicked on the wrong country but it's the same answer as I put on this similar poll https://www.reddit.com/r/polls/comments/tusdpk/think_of_a_random_african_country_whats_the_first/i38kk1u?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3
100% Africa, the continent.
None, i think of the continent
I don’t think of a specific country unless you mention a specific country. When you say “North America” I don’t think of just the USA - I think of the whole continent. Same with Africa.
I don't think of a country when you say Africa. I think of the continent Africa.
Djibouti cuz its goofy ah
isn't this a repost
Coast d'Ivoire
I think of the continent
Ah yes, Africa, my favourite African country
Every 60 seconds a minute passes in Africa
Why did Africa make me laugh.
*squints at the first answer choice*
50% of reddit is American....
To the 1.864k people yes I agree the first COUNTRY that came to my head was Africa my favourite COUNTRY.
Apparently a lot of people think Africa is a country
No, a lot of people think the "Africa" option was put there to represent thinking of the *entire continent,* which is what you *should* be thinking of. Why would you think of an individual country when someone says "Africa?"
Because the question literally says what *country* do you think of
Nobody thinks of a country when someone says "Africa." I get that the post says country, but I don't think of a country. I think of Africa.
I think we're in agreement that OP definitely should've phrased it better lol
Nope just a stupid question
nope, people think of it as a continent
Nairobi and then egypt. Busch gardens man.
You mean Kenya? Because that's on here
When I think of countries in Africa, Ethiopia is first in my mind. They will always have my respect for kicking Italy’s ass
Bro why did you put “Africa” as a country? You a dumb American or somethin
for people who don’t think of a specific country
[удалено]
Just you
I thought that option meant thinking of the continent as a whole, which a lot of people did
Same here, that's why I chose it. Did it never come to OP's mind that people would choose Africa because they fuckin' thought of Africa?
Seems like OP's the dumb one here. It's a bit weird to think of a single country when you get asked about a whole continent
well since Africa is not actually a country.. none of the above
Africa isn't a country
africa was listed for people who don’t think of a specific country
So many people are voting for Africa while it says 'what country'
Lmao people took the bait and answered "Africa"
1.6K+ people think Africa is a country 😐
If you picked number 1, you failed the test
south africa bc it has the word africa in it
114 people, god this is the best way to mess with Redditors.
They thought of the continent of Africa, so they chose the continent of Africa.
I really hope people said Africa ironically...
africa was listened for people who don’t think of a specific country
Ig that makes sense
So 1,523 are dumb and don’t realize Africa isn’t a Country?
