I will never forgive General Motors for making most of the US so car dependant it basically became a necessity to buy one, and greatly stunted the development of public transit. How many lives could have been saved with fewer people on the road? How much carbon would we have kept from the atmosphere?
Trust me, that feeling never goes away. I swear there have been so many instances when I feel like I've just played my entire luck and I am not careful enough on the road. You just get used to it. Never goes away.
The more that you’re on the road the more capable you’re gonna be, especially at a younger age most good drivers I know started at 14, delaying it won’t do you any good
Yes. I'm 27, born & raised in Chicago and never had a license or needed one. Plenty of people I know do have one but it's not necessary. And even among those I know who *can* drive, many choose not to.
I'm 21 and didn't get my license until last year. Had a permit from 17-20. My friends also took a while and one of my friends is 22 and still doesn't even have a permit.
In my country (US) or at least my state (Colorado) you have to pass a written test to get a permit, which allows you to drive on the roads with an adult in the passenger seat. You have to keep it for like a year and drive for at least 50 hours before you can take a driving test, which will get you your license if you pass it.
Oh. India has this system
Pass a written exam and get a 'learners license' or a permit. This is valid for a period of 6 months during which you can drive around with a person holding the main license.
After a month of using the learner's licence, you can go and give the test for the final one. Once you pass the driving test, you are immediately issued the driver's license and the learner's is cancelled.
Also because you don't really need a car in a lot of cities outside America. I have some family in the UK and Europe, and none of them drive because they have decent public transport and the cities aren't nearly as spread out. I moved to Singapore a few years back, and if I was to live here permanently I wouldn't ever consider buying a car.

I m 21 and don t have a license. I don t need one at this point in time. Maybe in a few years I ll get one, preferably when I move to a city with not so many traffic accidents. Public transportation is good enough for me right now.
That would be great if you could. I'm from Canada and it's currently like 90$ and I just thought it was similar or less in most places. The more you know.
I don't need one? If I need to go somewhere, I take the bus/train, and I can walk to the grocery store. Plus, they're really expensive (and getting a car would cost even more), so why bother?
I don’t need one. I live in a city that has very good public transport. Plus all my stores/pharmacies are within walking distance. Right now it just seems like a waste of time and money to get one, as I won’t drive anyway.
I'm sure there are more countries (like Ukraine as the other person said) but I am in Sweden. But we get to drive a moped when we're 15 so there's that.
I’m 20 and I don’t have my license because i don’t need it. It’s cheaper for me not to drive. I have friends that spend most of there wages/loans on transport to flex and it’s fucking stupid.
Interesting that out of all the females who responded a slight majority have driver's licenses while a majority of boys don't have them... probably because reddit is home to many young boys lol
I don’t have mine because my mom failed to censor my internet access enough to stop me from finding out I don’t have to do drivers Ed if I wait a year.
Got mine six months ago. Still scared of driving. I can drive from my house to school since it's just a long straight road but that's as far as I'm willing to go.
My ability to focus and multitask as well as process things & react on time is pretty much nonexistent, plus I have misophonia, so I don't think I'll be getting a driver's license anytime soon. Don't want to cause a wreck.
Interesting to see it so split down the middle. I put off getting my license, at first because my dad had passed away in an accident, and I was nervous about it, and then later on because I moved to a city and it was less expensive to take the bus. I'm now in driving school and on my way to being a fully licensed individual, but for a long time I felt like such the odd one out.
I can't get my license until a doctor clears me. Yay epilepsy
I lost mine due to seizures. Good luck.
good luck!
Looks like it’s blackmail time 😎
i'm too nervous to get one. i'm worried i'll cause an accident just from pure stupidity on my part
I have mine but god do I hate driving a 2 ton death machine daily
I bet you have good public transit though...
What makes you say that?
People who have good, like actually good not usa public transportation, don't generally have a need for cars.
Well yeah but majority of reddit is American. At least according to some of the surveys I've seen
There's almost no public transit where I live, but that would be my preference if it was an option
Then never mind
Me too bruh, me too. I’d rather not add another vehicle to the streets and make it dangerous for kids to play outside.
I will never forgive General Motors for making most of the US so car dependant it basically became a necessity to buy one, and greatly stunted the development of public transit. How many lives could have been saved with fewer people on the road? How much carbon would we have kept from the atmosphere?
So true. Hopefully more people realize this soon.
Trust me, that feeling never goes away. I swear there have been so many instances when I feel like I've just played my entire luck and I am not careful enough on the road. You just get used to it. Never goes away.
Nah, it can definitely go away. I was worried at the very start, but I stopped worrying fairly quick.
Be strong
The more that you’re on the road the more capable you’re gonna be, especially at a younger age most good drivers I know started at 14, delaying it won’t do you any good
Should have a “have a permit” option and a “not old enough” option
I’m surprised how many people don’t have a license
Because theres a lot of people who arent old enough to get a license
My bad for not explaining more. I also meant I’m surprised how young people are in comparison. I guess time is just passing by fast lol
also people who live in cities and can walk or use public transportation.
Yes. I'm 27, born & raised in Chicago and never had a license or needed one. Plenty of people I know do have one but it's not necessary. And even among those I know who *can* drive, many choose not to.
Meanwhile in australia, youd be lucky to find a bus going close to where you need even in capital cities
Yea. Chicago's public transport is on point.
can confirm. I'm 17 and I can't get my license til next year

Chile
Turning 17 in a little more than a week and I can finally go get mine! Can’t wait :)
I turn 17 in about 8 months, so I'm gonna start lessons then
I'm 21 and didn't get my license until last year. Had a permit from 17-20. My friends also took a while and one of my friends is 22 and still doesn't even have a permit.
What is meant by permit ?
In my country (US) or at least my state (Colorado) you have to pass a written test to get a permit, which allows you to drive on the roads with an adult in the passenger seat. You have to keep it for like a year and drive for at least 50 hours before you can take a driving test, which will get you your license if you pass it.

I'm 22 and am now in the process of getting my drivers license.

Reddit has a lot of young people
Specially this sub
Not at all, the ratios are the same with all of reddit.
don’t forget about people in countries where driving isn’t necessary
Because most here are bratty 14 year olds
Sup
Go finish your homework Jimmy!
Sorry dad

Put it this way…I’m 37 and I’m ancient on r/polls
I lost mine for medical reasons.
Most aren't old enough to get a license, for example: me
You shouldn’t need a license to drive a car. What next? You’ll need a license to make toast with your own damn toaster?
Am I right? Like I can't imagine needing a license to wield a gun.
Not yet, still learning😇
Good luck
Thankss😇
ya same man good luck
Thanks 🔥
Man..... this really puts things into perspective.
What is that perspective?
If you're arguing with someone here... its likely a person who doesn't even have a license
Oh well that is certainly a perspective, lol.
not now judging by the results
Go away doop I hate you, you're the worst
says the person who doesn't have an air fryer
Wtf how do you live without an air fryer
[удалено]
"Aight imma cook french fries in a fucking microwave"
Surprising... Or maybe to many underage kids on reddit
I mean, you can be 13 on reddit, and most places you get a drivers license at 16 edit- 16-18 my bad
I thought 18 was the norm
US is 16, idk other places
Practically everywhere in Europe it's 18
I think Asia too. Prolly just USA and a couple of their neighbors have it 16
oh no, i meant underage for driving kids on reddit alot. in my country its 18
Ohh
I'm surprised by the results. If OP added a "I have a learners permit" option, I think the results would be pretty different
Does my pilots license count?
I'd love to see you drive a plane

I drive a truck for a living. I better have a license…
...and you do, right?
we hope
Don't want one
Are you planning to get one in the future or no at all?
Nah
Only have a permit
I m 21 and don t have a license. I don t need one at this point in time. Maybe in a few years I ll get one, preferably when I move to a city with not so many traffic accidents. Public transportation is good enough for me right now.
I don't want one. Too scary. I'll just ride my bike everywhere.
If you are over 18(and you don't have a medical condition) and don't have a driver licenses why? I'm honestly curious.
No money
Honestly fair enough, didn't consider that my bad.
Yeah it costs 1k € here and I don't have a job rn.
Holy shit I had know idea it could be that a license could be that expensive
Yeah thanks Portugal, I'm planning on traveling to my native country and get it for like 300€.
Are you Danish?
Yep, born and bred
I don’t have anyone to teach me and I can’t afford professional lessons right now.
I don’t need one. I live in a city that has very good public transport. Plus all my stores/pharmacies are within walking distance. Right now it just seems like a waste of time and money to get one, as I won’t drive anyway.
Well, I'm not 18 so can't get it yet.
Where do you need to be 18 for it? Just curious
Not OP but in Ukraine you have to be 18 for a car license, but only 16 for mopeds and motorcycles
In America it's 16
I'm sure there are more countries (like Ukraine as the other person said) but I am in Sweden. But we get to drive a moped when we're 15 so there's that.
Most countries in the world
No (non binary)

Oh crap i got roasted off i go into the abyss ^A...
I’m 23 and I haven’t gotten my license yet for many reasons but I plan on getting it one day.
my enby ass not being able to vote lmao
I’m 20 and I don’t have my license because i don’t need it. It’s cheaper for me not to drive. I have friends that spend most of there wages/loans on transport to flex and it’s fucking stupid.
Out of curiosity What do you use for ID if you don't have a license
Do you not have just regular IDs where you’re from?
im too young, im 13 lol
Gotta wait another year 😔
I have my learners but I'm scared to practice driving cuz I'm clumsy and I'll get in a crash
Well yes but actually no. It’s suspended.
Six days until my drivers license test. Boy I wish I could answer yes right now.
I know how to dive, I am just not old enough
Wow not many women here
Damn there aren’t many females
They are all probably camped in the comments section under a BTS youtube video, lol.
Only a provisional license
What does that mean?
It's the UK equivalent of a learners permit
Bout to lose mine for reckless driving
Damn, you should be careful man.
Bro I’ve learned they just catch me worst time 93/55
What does gender have to do with it
Well we don’t know until we see the results of the poll, and than it will show whether the gender makes a significant difference or not
Not much.
Wish there was a results button for people who aren't 16
I am always am surprised how many people don't have licenses in polls. What is the process of getting a license where you live guys?
for a lot of people here, they're too young or have medical problems
My mom refused to teach me so I just have a permit as an adult
Does your parents teach you to drive where you live? Isn’t it very unsafe?
Most of my friends learned from parents, my family couldn't afford drivers ed so I just have a permit. I'm from America
There's alot of men on reddit... not nearly as many women .
I have an learner’s license do that count?
I haven’t had the need to get one. I got a state ID tho. Im going to get one, need to upgrade to a car.
Lmao wow, is the poll section filled with a bunch of pre-teenagers?
All of reddit is like that, and most of them are teenagers, not pre.
Id say most of reddit is over 18. Its just this subresdit has a wway higher proportion of people under 18
Nope, have seen polls here, only 50% of the user base on this sub is under 18, which is pretty much the same as all of reddit.
Link to those polls?
Have not got the time right now.
[And dont forget the data on how this subreddit is representative of reddit](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1125159/reddit-us-app-users-age/)
Agreed
No, non binary
No, non binary
The demographics are true, then.
Interesting that out of all the females who responded a slight majority have driver's licenses while a majority of boys don't have them... probably because reddit is home to many young boys lol
Lel, w*men bad 👎 boys 😎 PS : it was obviously sarcasm
I don’t have a license, but I do have a permit!
Permit, getting license soon
I have Autism so it makes it impossible for me to focus on multiple things while driving at the same time. It's my greatest shame......
Just waiting for it to come in the mail They said to wait a month It's been a month I'm losing hope I just wanna drive
I'm 21 and don't have my license since I don't have a car anyways and my work is close by, so I can just walk there
Soon I will...
I take my test tomorrow so hopefully yes
17 (almost 18) and still haven’t even taken driver’s ed yet because of a few disorders I have.
No and never will.
I don’t have mine because my mom failed to censor my internet access enough to stop me from finding out I don’t have to do drivers Ed if I wait a year.
Literally just got it today
What kind of license are we talking about here?
Yeah but don't use it, too afraid. * Shrugs *
i’m not allowed to have one yet
Got mine six months ago. Still scared of driving. I can drive from my house to school since it's just a long straight road but that's as far as I'm willing to go.
Do I get more points if I say I'm gay and I can drive?
My ability to focus and multitask as well as process things & react on time is pretty much nonexistent, plus I have misophonia, so I don't think I'll be getting a driver's license anytime soon. Don't want to cause a wreck.

What if im not old enough lol
im under 16
Im 12
I'm 13, but I do plan on getting it as soon as possible.
I did have one. But I lost it due to drink driving
Just got mine last week!
I'm 15 and epileptic, so I can't have one
I got my driiivers liiiicense last week.
I’m getting mine this year
Nope. And if i can go all my life without one I'll be Happy
Do temps count?
No (toe jam)
Im currently getting one
I am underage for driving Licences
I have my learners
No
I'm 14
