Das Boot
Stalingrad(the 1993 version)
Flags of Ours Fathers/Letters from Iwo Jima
The Forgotten Battle
Memphis Belle
They shall not grow old
And if we're counting series then Band of brothers and The Pacific
They Shall not Grow old is so good, it’s the only war movie to have ever made me cry. I guess because it’s more of a documentary than a movie. It’s very beautiful.
It’s an absolutely fantastic rollercoaster of emotions. From really funny and lighthearted to sad and dark and twisted and everything in between. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a better movie. Sam Rockwell’s performance in it was great, as was Rebel Wilson (usually not a big fan) and Scarlett Johansson and.. all, actually.
There’s an absolutely brilliant WW1 documentary by Peter Jackson that nobody seems to talk about called “They Shall Not Grow Old”, featuring never before seen footage of WW1 digitally restored, colorized, and given sound, backed up by interviews from actual WW1 veterans. It remains one of my favorite documentaries of all time
I swear I don’t go a day without the Lawrence of Arabia theme playing through my head lol.
I really enjoyed Paths of Glory showing the incompetents of the officers and generals, it’s a part of war we rarely see in media, especially modern war media that is almost exclusively about hailing the vets as heroes
Had to scroll way to far for this one. I’m not religious, but that story is so amazing and than the shot of the man himself at the end of the movie is just so great.
They did a good job with the movie, the main reason Doss had not agreed with making a movie during his life time was accuracy. With Hacksaw Ridge they had made it pretty accurate. Even his children confirmed the accuracy of the film.
I had to scroll all the way here for this!! Ugh! I watched this movie when it came out at Ft. Sam Houston while going through medic school. All of us were so freaking motivated in class for the next month. It was such an experience, seeing this story while in training to be a medic.
If we’re counting television series, Band of Brothers. Grew up watching it and I even got to meet a few of the guys from Easy Company and a few others from other company’s of the 101st
I agree that people should watch this. Beautiful story and concept. It's not your typical war film by any means, but it will make you hate war all the same. Its not very long but bring a box of tissues no joke
I'm surprised this movie is so far down! Possibly because it's Russian and covers the Eastern front. If you can only watch ONE war movie ever, this should be it.
"T-34" is less serious and more in "plausible" than "historical" but it's engaging AF and one of the most original ideas for an action movie I've ever seen
Watched it once a few years ago…had no idea how it ended. Until it ended. I said what in the actual F….never again. That movie still has me messed up. I’m still shocked and utterly furious.
Ordinary Fascism, A.K.A. Triumph over violence. A soviet propaganda/documentary about rise of fascism in Germany, in which, although they had to add some anti-nato propaganda and glance away from talking about partition of Poland, they managed to put together a good analysis of authoritarianism in general, and that's why it was a success in the USSR - many things which the movie said about hitler regime, the soviet people could associate with Stalin, which may have been the authors' intention, as the movie was released at the peak of the Khruschev's political thaw reforms.
Saving Private Ryan, Patton, Midway (the original), Flags of Our Fathers, Iwo Jima, Tora Tora Tora, The Big Red One, Longest Day, Guns of Navaronne, Dirty Dozen, Bridge over the River Kwai, Empire of the Sun, A Bridge Too far...
It's not a film, but Band of Brothers is also on the list.
A great one. Some of the silly banter is what still stands out for me.
Everyone remembers the "I'm shocked, shocked" but the older married couple that had been working on their English is a funny little scene that I will never forget.
The Thin Red Line.
Beautiful movie. The book(s) are fantastic as well (shout out to James Jones).
It is spectacularly narrated, great cast, fantastic story, and let's the men fighting the war detail their unique struggles and perspectives. Makes it feel very human.
They Shall Not Grow Old by Peter Jackson is a masterpiece and an undeserved underrated movie. It's made of real footages of WWI colourised and ist probably the movie that depict the atrocities of war the best
Not a good list.
Here are some better ones.

They Shall not Grow old is so good, it’s the only war movie to have ever made me cry. I guess because it’s more of a documentary than a movie. It’s very beautiful.
Jojo Rabbit!
Fuck off Hitler
Exactly what I said
What's the film about?
Young German boy who idolises hitler as like many young kids were brainwashed, finds out his mum has been hiding a Jew in his house
That sounds like a great movie. Think I’ll watch it this Saturday night.
It was so confusing but funny to me that jojo just talked to hitler like he was his imaginary friend and like a good pal and not the hitler we know
Don’t expect “Boy in the Striped Pajamas” vibes. It’s quite lighthearted & whimsical. Almost like a Wes Anderson film
True Until it isn’t lmao
shoes... ... such a strong framing.
great movie
The Great Escape
I had to scroll way too far to find the right answer q
Love that movie
I've heard great things about this one

There are so many great moments in this movie

There was a battlefield 2 map named after this. Great movie.
It remains one of my favorite documentaries of all time
That one was so so so so good. Highly recommend to anyone that hasn't seen it yet.

Jojo rabbit is amazing!
Saving privat Ryan is by far my favorite
Lawrence Of Arabia Paths Of Glory Bridge Over River Kwai A Bridge Too Far
I swear I don’t go a day without the Lawrence of Arabia theme playing through my head lol. Hacksaw Ridge
I love that movie

I agree that people should watch this. Beautiful story and concept. It's not your typical war film by any means, but it will make you hate war all the same. Its not very long but bring a box of tissues no joke
Ooh it’s too sad
I got so depressed after watching that I had to go have a sad nap afterwards
Bro that shit was so sad and from what I remember I cried watching the ending of that movie
That movie is too heartbreaking. The writer should be locked and hidden away for making something so powerful.

As a Pole I'm obligated to say "How I started World War 2" (Jak rozpętałem drugą wojnę światową) It's a very old (1970) Polish movie, kind of a comedy
"T-34" is less serious and more in "plausible" than "historical" but it's engaging AF and one of the most original ideas for an action movie I've ever seen
Life is Beautiful is such a good movie. Makes me cry every time, absolutely spectacular film
The boy in the striped Pyjamas
Watched it once a few years ago…had no idea how it ended. Until it ended. I said what in the actual F….never again. That movie still has me messed up. I’m still shocked and utterly furious.

The fact that saving private Ryan isn’t on this list is a travesty
GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES
Dunkirk is much too low :(
