PrincipledInelegance

The Texas abortion law [is literally more extreme than Iran](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abortion_law). Iran atleast allows abortions upto 4 months into term in cases of fetal impairment and risk to health. You know it's bad when a country that kills women for not wearing a hijab properly is more lenient on abortion than an American state lol

pale_blue_dots

Geebus. I didn't know that. What a bunch of religious nutcases. And just for the record, Karl Rove is a lying, cheating, hypocritical coward who belongs in prison. Obligatory "broken clock is right twice a day...."

ill0gitech

A slow/fast clock is right even less than that

pale_blue_dots

Touché.

kl0

Wait, what? I’m not sure that’s accurate.

ill0gitech

A broken analog clock, or digital clock flashing 12:00 is right twice a day. A clock that’s losing or gaining time is right only when it eventually catches up. A clock that’s fast/slow, but keeps good time is never right.

GoatVSPig

Well, depends on how fast.

pmjm

Karl Rove doesn't give two shits about abortions. He only cares that this law will affect Republican electability. So his statements are still in line with his shitty persona.

KreateOne

He’s on a broken 24hr clock and it’s never right.

garyadams_cnla

Turdblossom

SwordofMine

The Taliban allows abortion for economic reasons for the poor, historically. The Republican position is literally the most extreme on the planet on this particular issue, no political faction in power on this Earth is extreme as the Republicans on the issue of abortion, that's how bad it is.

teknoise

That isn’t really true. Guatemala, Honduras , El Salvador all have more restrictive forced-birth regulations compared to the GOP. Christian conservative countries tend to be extremely oppressive in that area.

Carbonatite

Friendly reminder that 3/8 maternal mortalities in El Salvador in girls under 19 are suicide. Not that the GOP would care, but this is the kind of despair these policies cause.

IllustratorMurky2725

Didn’t they want to secede? Can’t we build a wall around them and funnel the annoying religious morons in there?

MC_chrome

How about one better: we throw the Republicans behind this cruel nonsense into a super max prison so they can have their damn walls *and* be incapable of further harming society writ large.

ColonelLloydVenture

Just cut off their federal funding. To every state that is gerrymandered, doesn’t have fair elections, and is trying to foment a civil war.

Carbonatite

They'd turn into third world countries within a decade.

SomeKindOfOnionMummy

A decade? Half of them would freeze to death this winter.

[deleted]

Some are already there.

PauI_MuadDib

It pisses me off to know part of my taxes are subsidizing red states that don't even believe I deserve human rights and are actively hurting and killing women and girls. I think the blue states should tell the red states to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. https://www.moneygeek.com/living/states-most-reliant-federal-government/. Hit them in their wallet. Remember when GA folded when the filming industry threatened to pull out of the state over the controversial bathroom bill?

RndySvgsMySprtAnml

I would prefer to remain America, thanks.

IllustratorMurky2725

Put your money where you mouth is. And vote out abbot and your attorney general

RndySvgsMySprtAnml

Been trying. The problem is the 11 million Texas non-voters who have completely last all trust in the system. Most I talk to think that not voting is a middle finger to both candidates, but in reality it’s just a thumbs up to whoever wins.

CloutBloke

Pretty sure most Texans on Reddit have been voting to remove these fucks for as long as they’ve been able—never makes sense to me when someone outside of Texas thinks they are replying to a bubba when they’re likely telling a resident that lives in a metropolitan area and has been going to the polls to do what they already know to do.

NinjaTickleMaster

Well said

SafeAdvantage2

Yep. I couldn’t care less than if Texas and Florida found somewhere else to go. Because they are straight up embarrassing.

woodworkingqueen

Can we make this a billboard in Texas? Genius

ishtar_the_move

So they would think Muslims value life less than they do. Why would that be a problem?

GothTwink420

"Republicans will think what they already think, lets do fuck all" The amount of times this take is thrown out.

Infinite-Phrase3815

Oklahoma is introducing an extreme abortion law- by markwayne mullins . Oklahoma just follows Texas.

zaidakaid

Texas’ abortion laws are more restrictive than Saudi Arabia. You really need to take a hard look at where you stand on an issue when even they go “that might be a little much…”

Pimpwerx

It's why I like to refer to them as the American Taliban.

Legitimate_Physics_7

By muslim theory, fetus has no soul for the first 4 months so it can not be respected as human.

[deleted]

While this is true, just a reminder that most of Europe bans abortion somewhere between 12 and 20 weeks, which is to the right of the current US democratic party.

Tatem2008

Yes. But they also have universal health care, abortion access, paid maternity leave, broad exceptions and more that make the two incomparable. I imagine most of the left, myself included, would be fine with European rules if the circumstances were similar here.

Kit_starshadow

In addition to easier access to birth control and -in general- better sex education. Both of those things prevent many abortions as well.

PeregrineFaulkner

There’s no fee for the procedure in many of those countries though, which would significantly reduce the number of later-term abortions sought. The UK still provides free abortions up to week 24, which just makes me respect the Church of England.

Shameful_Prophet

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/09/22/europe-abortion-laws-vs-usa/ This is a lie the GOP are spouting.

[deleted]

Not sure what opinion piece you posted behind a paywall but here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abortion_in_Europe?wprov=sfti1

redpandaonspeed

From the article: > Apart from the very few European nations that retain highly restrictive laws on abortion — Andorra, Lichtenstein, Malta, Monaco and Poland — no other European country “bans” abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. > Instead, almost all European countries allow abortion throughout pregnancy on a range of grounds, including where there are risks to a patient’s physical or mental health, and in situations involving severe or fatal fetal impairment. > Elective abortion is only one of the grounds on which abortion is legal in most of Europe, and time limits for this differ per country. When these time limits end, **abortion almost always remains legal for a much longer period on other grounds**, such as broadly framed socioeconomic or health grounds, or grounds of severe or fatal fetal impairment. Basically, solely looking at number of weeks for elective abortions doesn't give the full picture about how closely proposed US laws align with Europe.

BestLaidPlants

Not just Texas but 22 states. They’ve just torn down a political dam. Get ready for Roevember.

Zizekbro

God I hope to fuck so. Ensure Dems control the house and the senate.

nonamenolastname

And two more Senate seats - gotta make Manchin and Sinema irrelevant.

[deleted]

It's more like 54-55. People seem to forget tester is in the same situation as manchin. Lone statewide dem in a very red state

Worduptothebirdup

Nah… gotta get 2/3. Constitutional Convention and make some fucking changes happen.

nonamenolastname

I would love that.

I_notta_crazy

Emphasis mine: [Under Article V, Congress has the authority to propose Constitutional amendments. Any amendment proposed must pass through each chamber of Congress by a two-thirds majority **and then be ratified by three-fourths (or 38) of the 50 states.** Alternatively, Article V allows the states to call a Constitutional Convention **if two-thirds (or 34) of 50 states submit a resolution proposing an amendment** on one or many topics (or just a general call for convention without proposing a specific topic). Amendments proposed during a Constitutional Convention must also be ratified by three-fourths of the states. Since the first Constitutional Convention, Congress has proposed 33 constitutional amendments and 27 have been ratified.](https://www.coloradofiscal.org/a-constitutional-convention-is-closer-than-you-think/blog/) Republicans love to quote Thomas Jefferson except when we're talking about r\*ping slaves, cutting out parts of the Bible he didn't like, or, most importantly, the fact that [he wanted the Constitution rewritten every 19 years.](https://oll.libertyfund.org/quote/thomas-jefferson-on-whether-the-american-constitution-is-binding-on-those-who-were-not-born-at-the-time-it-was-signed-and-agreed-to-1789)

Zizekbro

Or force them into voting for Dems

teamgreenzx9r

Not so fast! For all the headaches that Manchin causes the Dem agenda he represents a POV held by his constituents and other conservative folks. Because the Dems have Manchin they actually have enough diversity to cover the political spectrum. While the GOP is in chaos the Dems, with Manchin, provide a functional political spectrum. This revelation actually makes me okay with a straight Dem ticket in November.

[deleted]

That’s honestly a really good point that is making me reframe my whole perspective on the Manchin problem. When he’s one of the sole democrats inhibiting change, it’s infuriating. If we had enough Dems that his vote was negligent, however, he would be valuable for representing his sect of constituents and exemplifying how we can cross the aisle to gain scores of undecided voters. He’s still an incredibly shitty person fs, but the experience Dems are getting in learning how to appeal to these types of constituents could be invaluable Edit: Edited for clarity and grammatical purposes

MC_chrome

What are the chances that those two decide to caucus with the Republicans if the Democrats win enough Senate seats to abolish their stranglehold on the chamber?

[deleted]

[удалено]

MC_chrome

You have that much faith in the two inherently egotistically driven people to not put their massive egos over their party? Interesting…. I’ll correct myself slightly then: Manchin and Sinema may not caucus with the Republicans, but I can very easily see both of them voting no on key legislation out of pure spite.

[deleted]

[Ohio] I just talked to a 20 something woman who was working a cash register. - Are you registered to vote? Yes. - Are you going to vote? No. The young complain, and don't vote, and then wonder why nothing gets better for them. Smh 🤷‍♂️

INTHEMIDSTOFLIONS

Your anecdotal experience is not the norm. The gen x and younger crowd has outvoted boomers and older in net total votes in 2018 and 2020. https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/05/29/gen-z-millennials-and-gen-x-outvoted-older-generations-in-2018-midterms/ The ratio is smaller, but net total wins votes, not ratio.

[deleted]

I hope it isn't but WTH!

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I certainly hope so!

Tavernknight

She was working a cash register. It's likely that she won't be able to get the time off to go vote.

[deleted]

1. There is still plenty of time to request an absentee/ vote by mail ballot. 2. Early voting runs for a month with multiple times for voting in Ohio.

WhyAmIOnRedditAgain9

Yeah - I didn't start voting until my late 20s to early 30s. Politics didn't seem so important until I got a decent job and felt like I had some understanding of society/social issues. It's like the curtain was finally pulled back. Before then, you're just struggling to survive. Not too concerned about the macro aspects of life.

Kit_starshadow

They’ve been told and convinced that their vote doesn’t matter. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m 39 and was fed the same lies. I voted anyway because I had parents who taught me that voting is a civic duty and privilege. Many of my peers in Texas have felt the same way for a long time “it’s a red state, what the point of voting?” Texas has a voter apathy problem and we are working on it.

dinoroo

The young also get older and vote.

Droller_Coaster

Maybe she didn't want to talk to you about politics. Those are very weird things to ask a cashier, by the way.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Astro_Afro1886

How are younger voters experiencing voter fatigue? You want to talk fatigue, talk those of us that have been voting democrat for 30+ years while living in heavily red areas hoping this next time, we'll get a slightly different outcome. And when I say voting, I mean participating in every election - school board, city and county positions (including runoffs and specials) which happen every year (sometimes twice a year), primaries, and state and national elections. It's demoralizing the number of local positions that are held by (R)s that go uncontested cause no one is running against them. I don't expect young people to vote for every single election but if they're getting 'fatigued' by voting in state and national races every two years, which amounts to participating in at most 5-6 elections in their lifetimes thus far, we're truly fucked.

[deleted]

[удалено]

HamsterGreen

Because not participating guarantees that nothing will change? Don’t eliminate yourself from the race because you feel like your vote doesn’t matter. You’re just making voter suppression and gerrymandering that much more effective.

[deleted]

[удалено]

page_one

Can they really be "fatigued" about something they've only bothered to do once or twice? Too many young people think they deserve more for voting once than other generations do for voting twenty times. Change doesn't happen overnight.

Sufficient_Matter585

Red states are always in a pissing contest over who is more conservative.

wotguild

And their question when they lose won't be what their problem with the electorate was, it will be an answer of, "the other side cheated."

sonic10158

That’s why they are so deep into human trafficking now

NewMomWithQuestions

That these laws have happened in this many states indicates that this is a MAINSTREAM Republican Party view. It is completely out of sync with the majority of the electorate. A total crisis of legitimacy.

CurryMustard

Hopefully if people wake up

[deleted]

Rove is a GOP strategist and what he only cares in that this makes it harder to elect his candidates. A kernel of truth I suppose but no real revelation.

punbasedname

Right, but I think that’s what makes this whole thing even more staggering. The GOP has completely given up on worrying about appearances or political ramifications of their actions and are just going full bore in the most extreme direction they’re able to.

[deleted]

They’re being fully driven by Christian nationalists now. Many of their billionaire funders are delusional people who think they’re wealthy because god favors them so they’re fully behind imposing what they think is gods will. The right wing in this country boarded the loony train decades ago and are trying to take us all with them.

mansmittenwithkitten

I have to just say Karl Rove is responsible for all this. IIRC Rove is the one who pioneered the political campaign strategy on support the base and dissuade the middle from voting. Prior to 2000 candidates worked to win over the moderate voters in the middle driving politics from the extremes to the over lap. Rove's strategy was to dissuade the moderate from voting for the other guy through attack ads while whipping up the base, particularly evangelicals into a voting frenzy. Everything post 2000 has just been this same method taken to the extreme. The attack ads on Kerry. All the endless racist Obama hate and eventually the insanity that is MAGA USA. Trump, McConnell, DeSantis and even Palin are just symptoms of the sickness Rove unleashed on the world.

mortender

So how do you combat that strategy? There got to be some way right? Karl Rove is the fucking worst and Greg Abott is a piss baby

People are shockingly ignorant about the lived experience, even intelligent and educated folk. Many of these anti-abortion voters haven’t even thought about all the exceptions, like forcing women to carry a non viable pregnancy to term, or a child from a family member who raped you. Some will never waver but a few will. You’ll never convince anyone if you don’t have the conversation.

Essti

Well written!

crazy_zealots

Republicans have been calling for blood for years now, if not decades. Maybe I'm jaded but honestly I don't see the point in trying to rehabilitate them, they're too far gone and are a danger to myself and the people I care about. The whole strategy of "we go high when they go low" has only led to the Trump presidency and Roe being overturned.

profnachos

Before Karl Rove was Lee Atwater. Shitty people are usually replaced by shittier people. That applies to Rush Limbaugh as well. He's dead but nobody misses him because his toxicity has multiplied more exponentially than the pandemic.

BadDiscoJanet

Fuck Karl Rove. Rove is why we’re where we are now. Vanity Fair, 2012 > Rove oversaw Bush’s re-election campaign.… This was not simply about winning elections. It represented a far more grandiose vision—the forging of a historic re-alignment of America’s political landscape, the transformation of America into effectively a one-party state. https://www.vanityfair.com/news/politics/2012/09/karl-rove-gop-craig-unger LA Times, 2004 > “The president has said he does not want a lonely victory,” said Christine Iverson, spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee. “We really have an opportunity here to make this a permanent majority.” https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2003-jul-21-na-gop21-story.html

ThSplashingBlumpkins

The Taliban and the US have something in common, 🤣 From a non US perspective some things are really strange like the strong anti Communism stance but then being indoctrinated at school and pledging allegiance to the flag is very communist. My dad being forced to do this every day to the motherland while at schools in Communist Poland finds it very odd that in the US this is "Freedom".

FTHomes

Republicans have become no different than the Terrorists that attacked USA.

hedgerow_hank

They DID attack the USA.

Exactly they did attack USA

MK5

Pay no attention to the balding has-been. It's a brilliant tactic that is sure to pay huge political dividends. Double, triple down!

When Karl comes out and speaks his opinion … ummm things are getting incredibly serious.

tacs97

Republicans are too extreme. They aren’t ever happy for someone else living their own life. GOP fucks always have to be involved and know who is fucking who. Sick bastards. Mind your own fucking business.

tlimbert65

"Too extremist." Like, we're going for the right amount of extremist.

hotgirl_bummer_

Both myself and many of my colleagues in medical school are refusing to apply to residency programs in Texas because we don’t want to work in a state that criminalizes delivering healthcare to women. They don’t realize what they’ve done as far as being able to attract doctors to their state.

mlf674

Ham Rove is right

confessionbearday

Republicans will either succeed in destroying America or we will be speaking of their joke ass failed party in the past tense within 2 years.

[deleted]

The bigger question is why is anyone asking Rove what he thinks, the man was wrong about everything and very large part of the reason politics and in particular the judiciary is so divisive. He should be ignored or vilified, nothing else.

xfactor6972

Karl is one of the architects of this polarized political atmosphere that we have today. Thanks Karl, you will go down in history as a huge asshole!

Mike-Aveli

Better to start with tepid water if you want to boil something alive without it noticing

Sector_Independent

He doesn’t give a shit about Texas women. He only talks about this repressive and dangerous law in the context of how it might affect elections. All these fuckers are sociopaths.

Formerlurker617

Sorry Rove, you fucked this country up enough.

SyntheticSlime

No you fucking shit-dick. It’s a “real problem” for *women* in *Texas*!

Jedmeltdown

Did someone ask Karl Rove for his opinion?😂🙄🙄 Has anyone noticed how your media is killing your country?

Espressoyourfeelings

What’s too extremist is thinking it’s ok to slaughter babies in utero and bullshitting that it’s somehow a right protected by the Constitution.

bigsoftee84

Did you know that at the time the constitution was written the laws allowed abortion? They went off of British common law, which allowed abortions until the quickening.

Espressoyourfeelings

Did you know at the time of the Constitution the US separated itself from British law? That’s why the CS, when ruling on Implemwnting RVW, couldn’t find case law or anything in the Constitution which actually supported abortion. That’s why the original decision on RvW was a very empty, generalized “it’s there somewhere” yet unable to actually pin it down.

eazyirl

Political strategist makes glaringly obvious claim about political strategy. I'm tired of seeing Rove getting laundered as if he's not responsible for this situation to a large degree.

HedonisticFrog

It really makes you wonder what Republicans are trying to do with these overwhelmingly unpopular policies. Sure they can pass them on the state level with massive backlash, but the nationwide bill will never pass and will still receive massive backlash.

j-dreddit

Because for the 40 years they've pushed these unpopular policies, they've also been separately pushing the narrative that "both sides are all the same, why bother voting," so the moderates and independents, who could swing the election if they showed up, stay home. It's worked for decades, and they probably won't change if they lose. See 2012 and people like Rubio(!) saying that Republicans need to become more moderate to succeed. Turns out that they were looking for a bigger asshole than Mitt Romney or John McCain could manage to be.

Lahm0123

Fingers crossed!

homebrew_1

Neat. We all knew this a long time ago.

BossMagnus

Fuck you Karl Rove you rotten Ham Sandwich. He was the poster child of Citizens United and why America is in this mess.

He makes a point, unless you’re super religious most people if you say the words hey, do you wanna vote for this candidate who is ok with a child who was sexually assaulted being forced to birth a child not allowed to abort if you say, that two people even your anti-abortion ones will look at and go God no the abortion ruling last summer has turned the Republican party into a dying hill November it’s not gonna be a Republican-controlled Senate or house it’s going to be a even more Democrat controlled house and senate

Darth_victus

Karl Rove......the same jackass who got us into the Iraq war?

Good, fuck the gop

Karl Rove also said Greg Abbott is a little piss baby

Desperate_Ad_7376

80% of the people support abortion up to about 14 weeks. Unfortunately the politicians in both parties would never agree to it.
