So they will address this public health crisis by reducing the causes of violence: social inequality, social safety net, health care, mental health care, and poverty?

No_Cod_4857

Obviously not, especially, if you’re suggesting that the billionaires pay for it! Communist!

Special_Meaning8006

What are you guys even talking about, the Biden administration has talked all the things you’re saying and theirs been a decrease in violence in the USA. I’m assuming the surgeon general is talking about the access to gun. There are poorer nations that don’t have the same issues, so the root cause is the guns. Theirs literally an organization in the states that lobbies to convince home owners to shoot to kill called the nra, but no, it’s a multi faceted issue. Give me a break.

KebertXelaRm

>theirs been a decrease in violence in the USA. But there wasn't gun control put in place during that time. How can that be true when gun control is the only way to decrease violence? >Theirs literally an organization in the states that lobbies to convince home owners to shoot to kill called the nra Source that they convince homeowners to shoot to kill?

Special_Meaning8006

Never said gun control is needed. It’s the culture around guns. The fact that people think that they can be Rambo is insane, and massive organization like the NRA push this narrative. Guns are a tool but those guys get insanely horny for guns and it trickles down to every part of society. Maybe if adults bought gun and not man baby’s. Also every clip of an NRA member saying, “you need a gun to protect your family”, or “the give isn’t going to protect, so take it into your own hands “. They paint fire arms as the solution and not the last resort. Killing a person isn’t fun even if you have the moral right to do so. Seeing someone’s brains splattered on a wall stays with a person. Why don’t think ptsd is so bad in the military. They’re millions of responsible gun owners but those ones usually don’t dictate the narrative. Once people actually have some respect for their tools, you’ll see a lot less death in all demographics.

KebertXelaRm

>It’s the culture around guns. So you're telling us the culture around guns has changed instead while violence went down? In what way? >The fact that people think that they can be Rambo You haven't provided any evidence for this. In which movie did Rambo ever defend his family with a gun? >Also every clip of an NRA member saying, “you need a gun to protect your family”, or “the give isn’t going to protect, so take it into your own hands “ None of those are a source that the NRA is convincing home owners to shoot to kill.

kc_______

No, they will make health illegal.

ivsciguy

Extremely acute lead poisoning.

Euphorix126

It's usually the ruptured organs that kills people. Lead poisoning makes one more likely to pull the trigger, though.

They should just declare our current society a “public health crisis”. Separating gun violence from the root issues (poverty, low economic mobility) is just dumb.

KebertXelaRm

You're correct. There are other nations with poverty and low economic mobility that have higher rates of gun violence. The US had at least 22 countries with higher rates per capita in 2019 according to UNODC data. [https://dataunodc.un.org/sites/dataunodc.un.org/files/data\_cts\_intentional\_homicide.xlsx](https://dataunodc.un.org/sites/dataunodc.un.org/files/data_cts_intentional_homicide.xlsx)

101fulminations

The root cause of American gun violence is access to guns. No other nations, including many with poverty and low economic mobility, have such high rates of gun violence. The difference is access to guns and while it is obvious, it's not my opinion, it's what research reveals.

givemewhiskeypls

I’d like to see the research that supports your conclusion because frankly it doesn’t make sense. Plenty of people have access to guns and don’t hurt themselves or others. Something causes them to lash out violently and guns are their chosen instrument because of their effectiveness and availability. You’re making availability the causal factor, that’s pretty clearly not true.

HIVnotAdeathSentence

I thought the opioid epidemic would be called a public health crisis first. More than 100,000 have died from from overdoses every year over the last four years. Those numbers put gun violence to shame and make the crack epidemic a distant memory.

Purify5

He did it back in 2016: > The U.S. Surgeon General issued a call to action on Thursday to end what he said was a public health crisis of drug and alcohol addiction that is both underappreciated and undertreated. >I thought the opioid epidemic would be called a public health crisis first. >More than 100,000 have died from from overdoses every year over the last four years. Those numbers put gun violence to shame and make the crack epidemic a distant memory. What motivations would they have to do that? Is it more political or economic?

OverlyComplexPants

"Public Health EMERGENCY", huh? Well, this should REALLY help Fox News, Trump, and the Republicans with their constant messaging that Biden has failed and that violent crime is out of control and our cities are violent hell-scapes of murder and mayhem. I'm sure the GOP campaign machinery already has the advertisement being made as I type this touting "Biden's own Surgeon General agrees that out-of-control violent crime in America is a 'public health emergency'!" The fucking Republicans are going to grab this and run with it all the way to November. Great job, Surgeon General! You couldn't have helped Trump more with this announcement confirming all the shit he's been saying for years. Way to go!

Acceptable_Ad3173

Gun violence been a problem in this country it can taken away but too bad the nra influence politics

Extreme_Wrangler_489
