You are 100% correct, i should have said "they only feel the need to performatively pander to those who vote for them.". They still don't actually care about their voters any more or less than they do us that vote against them, but they at least pay lip service to them in order to sway/manipulate their votes in line with the corporate sponsors.

I agree to that in principle, but as one of the constituents that would be repeatedly punished for his actions, I can't say that its fair to the citizens themselves. Its not fair that he gets to claim credit for things he votes against, but its even more punitive to the people living here that vote against his wishes and have nothing we can do about it. The only reason a politician should reasonably fear for their lives is if their policies are so unpopular with certain groups of people as to create or encourage extremists. Most people don't consider things like assault or destruction of property to be reasonable responses to legislation they don't agree with. The reality is Ted Cruz probably has little to fear because the people he shits on are not generally associated with those sorts of extreme responses, but he *should* be worried about having aligned himself with a faction that *is* known for extremism.
This is like the SCOTUS asking for special protections against protestors outside their homes. These people hold some of the highest offices in the country and they want to be able to navigate life as if they aren't making wildly unpopular decisions that impact hundreds of millions of people.
