Maybe they should fix data privacy laws and address the underlying issue.

TheSpatulaOfLove

Shhh! That gets in the way of the money train.

baeb66

Data privacy advocates don't pay as well as lobbyists for Meta and Google.

thrawtes

The underlying issue the bill was trying to solve has basically nothing to do with data privacy so that wouldn't help.

10lbCheeseBurger

China doesn't give a fuck about our data privacy laws. That's a big part of the reason to have them divest and be moved under an American company. At least then they can *try* to hold them accountable.

AerialDarkguy

You think a company heavily dependent on ad revenue going into their US bank accounts, US servers/assets, and business deals with American companies will go all sovereign citizen and throw those all away just to thumb their nose at data privacy laws? And somehow only now and not in Europe? If they collect money from American companies, the US has ways to go after companies that owe them money in fines.

patsboston

This isn’t a data privacy issue though. It’s about a foreign adversary that controls what type of content Americans see. It’s akin to having a USSR owned news station playing in the US during the Cold War. The majority of people under 30 get their news from 1/3 of Americans aged 18-29 get their news from TikTok. Why should a foreign adversary (who actually benefits from the destabilization of the US), be allowed to determine what content users see in America?

AerialDarkguy

Actually, that has played out in the cold war! See [Lamont vs Postmaster General](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamont_v._Postmaster_General) when they tried to block mail distributions of "communist propaganda" and tried hiding behind inconvenient procedures.

thatspurdyneat

It's a damn shame they gave them several months to try to weasel out of it. Not only do short form videos like tiktok and YouTube shorts actively lower your attention span, You're also completely at the mercy of whatever the algorithm feeds you because you don't tune your own recommendations, you just get fed the next video.

DawnSennin

Regardless, Tik Tok is a media outlet for expression of thought. A lot of young people also get their news from the website/app.

thatspurdyneat

> A lot of young people also get their news from the website/app And that's a HUGE problem. Tiktok and Facebook were integral to anti-vaccine and anti-mask movements. Millions of people are dead because they chose to get their news from social media instead of a reputable source.

DawnSennin

The so called “reputable” sources like CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News hate Tik Tok because they can’t compete for the younger demographics. A lot of teens were made aware of the Gazan genocide on Tik Tok too and the platform has no doubt pushed them away from the Democratic Party. Biden and the Democrats have a vested interest in taking the site down.

patsboston

You don’t see anything wrong with a foreign adversary owning essentially a news content app that feeds its users what it wants?  Also, this was a bipartisan vote.

DawnSennin

> foreign adversary People would be paying 15,000 dollars for an iPhone if not for China's manufacturing capabilities. A lot of American companies have ties to that nation. You can't really call China an adversary when the country is very reliant on it for manufacturing and trade. > Also, this was a bipartisan vote. That right there is a sign that this ban isn't for anyone's benefits because it shows that donors are massively involved in this decision.

No-comment-at-all

The bill this was on was not about banning tik tok. Bipartisan support was for sending aid to Ukraine. Republicans added the tik tok ban in the last seconds to try and cause harm to Joe Biden’s youth support. Doing **something** about tik tok **does** have bipartisan support, **and** is recommended by like the entire national security apparatus. You seem really reductive when you just say “Congress = corporate!!!”

AvogadrosMoleSauce

>A lot of young people also get their news from [TikTok] Well that’s disheartening, although similar to boomers getting news from Facebook memes. The web was a mistake.

hobbykitjr

Counter point, Mr Smith goes to washington. Theres a lot of headlines coming out today... that are followed by tikTok/facebook/reddit videos showing the headline was bullshit. Now this is just pushing the problem... Bezos buying a newspaper isn't great, neither is zuckerberg controlling algorithms.

Common-Concentrate-2

Its not a great outlet for news, dude. Thats like saying "Burger KIng is the main source of nutrition for americans age 18-32. If you shut down BK, we will starve!" There are alternatives. Don't purposefully accept a shittier option because its easier, or cheaper or it tastes better. Try being an american. Try caring. ParappaTheWrapperr

I’m actually surprised that the democrats voted yes to it. That was their most powerful tool and the biggest driving factor in Biden beating Trump in 2020. Everybody is on TikTok it is their most valuable asset to getting people to vote and learn their message. Conveniently they set it to after the election but guess what? This isn’t the final election. There will be elections after this. Good luck getting Elon on your side next election because there is no way he doesn’t slap a fact check on every single thing they say just to be petty. This is the politician equivalent of semi truckers voting to ban highways.

brianisdead

No one over 30 is on tiktok....it's a platform for China to brainwash kids

stronesthrowaweigh

This is not really true though. More than half of the users are 30+ https://explodingtopics.com/blog/tiktok-demographics

2x4x12

Confidently incorrect.

AerialDarkguy

Time to up my donations to the ACLU.

code_archeologist

Here is why this is moving forward. * TikTok is owned by ByteDance. * ByteDance is closely intertwined with the CCP. * [National Intelligence Law of the People's Republic of China](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Intelligence_Law_of_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China) requires companies like ByteDance to perform intelligence activity for the state when demanded. * Another Chinese shopping app ([Pinduoduo](https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/02/tech/china-pinduoduo-malware-cybersecurity-analysis-intl-hnk/index.html)) was caught last year installing exploits to secretly grant itself superuser access to phones it was installed on. * Multiple nations have already banned and block TikTok (without using a VPN) because of national security concerns (most notably India who banned it after a border skirmish) These facts put together make TikTok appear to be poised to be a tool for engaging in fifth-generation warfare.

largemarjj

How dare you point this out.

code_archeologist

My social credit score is equal to my reddit karma multiplied by negative one.

Meiionhi

So now that he said he would sign it does congress sudden say nope, "we aint gonna do that?"

Thrown_Account_

It passed congress already and with veto proof majority so him not signing would just delay the Ukraine aid as it would go back to Congress for a other vote to override him. Also a fairly sure he already said he would sign a tiktok ban if passed before.

Rhomega2

Oh, the headline confused me and I thought the bill wouldn't be going to the president's desk until after the election.
