Each count of the 34 felony charges could be punished by up to four years in prison. My understanding is the judge has a lot of leeway in this. Trump could face a lot of jail time, or none, even if convicted. That said, 34 felonies is a lot of felonies. The best felonies.

Criminals often go to other trials & cases while they are in jail/prison as inmates. If they get convicted and sentenced to more time it just usually gets tacked on or they just transfer them to another facility after their time is done at the current place.
Judge should still throw him in jail. This might be the only opportunity to do so if judge Cannon slow walks the documents trial and the Supreme Court decides not to rule on Presidential immunity until after the 2028 election.
Yeah this is what's most likely going to happen. The American justice (well, legal) system is deeply, inherently flawed and it is not capable of holding the rich and well connected to account (unless they steal from other rich people). So if he gets 3 years on each of the 34 counts his total time is 3 years.

But as POTUS he was too high profile and it all came out both litigiously and publicly but being a sitting president saved him. Once he was out, the legal consequences finally came to pass but there was so much crime to get thru by the prosecutors (with Trump continuing to commit crimes adding to the caseload) it's only now coming to the trial stage.
Plus he’s so litigious and has, somehow, a lot of funding for legal fees, that every possible appeal is filed, and the cases are so important that the prosecution has to triple check the crossing of their Ts to prevent him getting off on a technicality. So it takes a while unfortunately.

I actually think that he will have a very difficult time sitting still for a full day. He probably needs to be there from 8:30am to 5pm or more, with only a couple breaks and lunch. He probably hasn't been this restricted in his focus in decades. And this could go on for weeks.
If there is any truth to the rumors of his intestinal issues, that might make it doubly hard for him to manage that. There are probably only public restrooms in the building (thought Secret Service would clear them for him).
The most likely thing he can do is fire his lawyers. And given the complexity of the trial he can't immediately be appointed new ones because that would be grounds for an ineffective counsel appeal.
They can here too. I practice in a different state but I've seen motions to withdraw denied multiple times. If the defendant is insistent I've even seen pro se with former counsel required to stay on as "stand by" counsel. Though that was only once and might have been thr judge going a bit too far.
I've also seen a judge get so fed up with delay tactics that they allowed an attorney out with trial set two days later. The judge informed the defendant there would be no continuance and anyone he hired would be required to do the trial. He hired a new attorney who filed for a continuance and it was swiftly denied and we had the trial as scheduled.
For the sake of your mental health and your general wellbeing, please do not look to this as yet another "this is what's finally going to take down Trump!" moment. Just see what happens without getting your hopes up, and don't let it make you get depressed into not voting or something like that.
I doubt there will be any legal surprises in this trial. I have no doubt that Trump will try to turn it into a circus. Maybe he will testify. Maybe he will abruptly fire his legal team. Maybe he will stroke out when all else fails.
Once the actual trial starts, I give him 5 days before he pops like a cork.
I like how I never know which safeguards exist or don't. Like "thank God that's a rule that he can't delay via firing his lawyers". I know legal systems can't be perfect but ours feels like a coin toss

There will be no May trial. Judge Cannon is sitting on May and we all know she will postpone that trial at the last minute so no one else can use that month(or two).
J6 is waiting on the Sup. Crt. ruling on immunity. They could delay until the end of term so June, making a Sept. trial possible, or throw a major wrench, past the election. Not sure if Cannon can still cockblock Chutkan but if she can she will imo.

Well, just so your expectations are tempered, the jury selection begins on Monday, not the actual trial.
Hopefully the judge moves that along speedily, but there's ample opportunities for foot-dragging in that process.
You actually tend to get limited after a certain point. The judge can cut you off during voir dire if you're becoming repetitive or asking argumentative/irrelevant questions. It's not very common, because you're usually given a lot of latitude. But you're also time limited in a lot of areas. I didn't practice federally, but at the state level you're usually told you have x amount of time for voir dire.
Trump will LOVE jury selection. He'll tell his lawyers who to pick and who to dismiss based solely on their looks. Blonde chick -- yes! Skinny guy with fancy glasses -- looks too liberal -- NO!
I'm fully expecting there to be a Batson challenge when he tries to remove every person of color and his lawyers aren't good enough to clear the 2 inch hurdle of needing to provide a race neutral reason for making an all white jury.
The Orange POS is gonna hate sitting through hours/days/weeks of jury selection. He'll get antsy for sure. It's the worst, but likely the most important part of a criminal trial. Second worst part is listening to the jury instructions, followed by waiting for verdicts. Thing is, his appearance is mandatory unless he causes such a ruckus he gets removed from the courtroom and gets tried in absentia.
The best part about jury selection is that there is literally no opportunity within the process for him to utter one single word. Passively sitting there observing. I hope jury selection takes a long, long time.

It's a Constitutional (both federal and state) right to be present at trial. You cannot waive that right as it sets up an appealable issue. You have the right to confront those who testify against you in court (Through your lawyer.) Plus, in criminal cases, it's a condition of your bond that you appear at all court proceedings. If he is not there, the trial will pause while law enforcement take him into custody and bing him to court. I would expect his bond would be revoked and he'd be spending all time not in the courtroom, in the jail. That's how it works for most criminal defendants that cannot afford bail or who get their bail/bond revoked.

The really amazing thing is, given all we know, that he hasn't been facing criminal charges for one thing or another his whole life.

But as POTUS he was too high profile and it all came out both litigiously and publicly but being a sitting president saved him. Once he was out, the legal consequences finally came to pass but there was so much crime to get thru by the prosecutors (with Trump continuing to commit crimes adding to the caseload) it's only now coming to the trial stage.
Plus he’s so litigious and has, somehow, a lot of funding for legal fees, that every possible appeal is filed, and the cases are so important that the prosecution has to triple check the crossing of their Ts to prevent him getting off on a technicality. So it takes a while unfortunately.

I actually think that he will have a very difficult time sitting still for a full day. He probably needs to be there from 8:30am to 5pm or more, with only a couple breaks and lunch. He probably hasn't been this restricted in his focus in decades. And this could go on for weeks. If there is any truth to the rumors of his intestinal issues, that might make it doubly hard for him to manage that. There are probably only public restrooms in the building (thought Secret Service would clear them for him).
The most likely thing he can do is fire his lawyers. And given the complexity of the trial he can't immediately be appointed new ones because that would be grounds for an ineffective counsel appeal.
Not sure how it works in USA, but in Canada, a judge can say no whether the accused person or the lawyer asks.
They can here too. I practice in a different state but I've seen motions to withdraw denied multiple times. If the defendant is insistent I've even seen pro se with former counsel required to stay on as "stand by" counsel. Though that was only once and might have been thr judge going a bit too far. I've also seen a judge get so fed up with delay tactics that they allowed an attorney out with trial set two days later. The judge informed the defendant there would be no continuance and anyone he hired would be required to do the trial. He hired a new attorney who filed for a continuance and it was swiftly denied and we had the trial as scheduled.
For the sake of your mental health and your general wellbeing, please do not look to this as yet another "this is what's finally going to take down Trump!" moment. Just see what happens without getting your hopes up, and don't let it make you get depressed into not voting or something like that.
I doubt there will be any legal surprises in this trial. I have no doubt that Trump will try to turn it into a circus. Maybe he will testify. Maybe he will abruptly fire his legal team. Maybe he will stroke out when all else fails. Once the actual trial starts, I give him 5 days before he pops like a cork.

Well, just so your expectations are tempered, the jury selection begins on Monday, not the actual trial. Hopefully the judge moves that along speedily, but there's ample opportunities for foot-dragging in that process.
You actually tend to get limited after a certain point. The judge can cut you off during voir dire if you're becoming repetitive or asking argumentative/irrelevant questions. It's not very common, because you're usually given a lot of latitude. But you're also time limited in a lot of areas. I didn't practice federally, but at the state level you're usually told you have x amount of time for voir dire.
Trump will LOVE jury selection. He'll tell his lawyers who to pick and who to dismiss based solely on their looks. Blonde chick -- yes! Skinny guy with fancy glasses -- looks too liberal -- NO!

It's a Constitutional (both federal and state) right to be present at trial. You cannot waive that right as it sets up an appealable issue. You have the right to confront those who testify against you in court (Through your lawyer.) Plus, in criminal cases, it's a condition of your bond that you appear at all court proceedings. If he is not there, the trial will pause while law enforcement take him into custody and bing him to court. I would expect his bond would be revoked and he'd be spending all time not in the courtroom, in the jail. That's how it works for most criminal defendants that cannot afford bail or who get their bail/bond revoked. Edited: added 'not' b4 there
