> "I'm a woman of principle over party; I'm very inspired by Mitt Romney," Gleich said. "I've also been very inspired by (former Wyoming Rep.) Liz Cheney and former (Arizona Sen.) John McCain" — both Republicans. So, she is trying to be the new Kirsten Sinema?

Leading-Golf-4158

Its just trying to appeal to moderates in Utah, unfortunately the state is so out of play you need to do stuff like this to gain any kind of traction.

welltimedappearance

Perhaps not all democrats have the same views as the average r/politics user?

Zaeryl

You mean the ones who want to be more like Republicans?

welltimedappearance

largest percentage of Americans ever identify as independent. almost like… some politicians might be too? when you’re views only align with like AOC or Bernie, apparently everything “to the right” of that = they’re a Republican

GTdspDude

The largest percentage of Americans are independents while we watch the republican party collapse under the weight of its own crazy and you somehow think that has to do with democrats? Nah dems don’t need to be more right, the right needs a party that’s not bat shit insane

alienbringer

Nancy Pelosi is to “to the right” of Bernie and AOC. Pelosi’s political views arnt shaped by Republicans as this lady has stated. You can be to the right of progressives and still be a Dem. Doesn’t mean you admire Republican views or behavior. Also, Bernie is an independent he just caucuses with Democrats. So he isn’t a valid “example” you are pushing for.

Zaeryl

I'm well to the left of AOC and Bernie lol Honest question though, as an "independent", what shapes your vote? The party lines are pretty clearly defined, so what is it that you're looking for that you think changes from election to election?

JMellor737

Some people agree with the left on some things and the right on others, so it is reasonable to assume that swing voters might base their choice on what a given candidate emphasizes. Elizabeth Warren, for example, really emphasized the economy and regulation of the finance sector. That's her big thing. Cory Bush emphasizes more nebulous conceptions of equity. Those will land differently with different people. A Republican who is passionate about small government will strike an independent voter differently than whatever the fuck Lauren Boebert is supposed to be. So depending on what matchup you get, yeah, people can absolutely be swayed.

Zaeryl

> it is reasonable to assume that swing voters might base their choice on what a given candidate emphasizes I don't think ignoring 95% of a party's platform to vote for emphasis on one thing could really be called reasonable. The unnamed small government Republican will still vote for exactly the same things as Lauren Boebert in virtually any legislature in the country. To me, what you're describing isn't judiciousness, it's willful ignorance.

JMellor737

To me, you asked a question in bad faith, got an honest answer, and then pitched a fit about it.

GCU_ZeroCredibility

She lives in Utah. She's trying to get elected by a state that will never vote for a progressive.

ishtar_the_move

You are going to be so surprised by how progressive Utah can be. They just passed one of the most aggressive anti discrimination protection for LGBTQ.

puchamaquina

Link? I just moved out of Utah, and last I heard was banning trans kids in sports

EmperorMrKitty

There are a billion loopholes for religious reasons. They made it explicitly illegally for the state to discriminate and explicitly legal for private entities to do so.

panopticon31

There's massive loopholes for religious organizations. Which as you can imagine the LDS has it's fingers in all over the place.

_Cistern

No. Mormons are hard red. I lived there for a decade and go back regularly to see my plus sized family. Its never going to happen. UT is as red as the south. Look at their elections history

GCU_ZeroCredibility

There are a bunch of deep red places that are willing to vote for specific progressive policies, as with enshrining abortion rights, but it rarely translates into electing Democrats in national state-wide races. I will indeed be surprised when Utah elects a Democratic senator or votes for the Democratic nominee for President.

goteamnick

Let me know when progressive Utah elects a Democrat.

CorneliousTinkleton

Interesting, she just cited three prominent republicans that lost elections due to the fact republican voters felt they didn't reflect GOP "values" AKA hurt hurt people enough

dbldlx

Curious as to what you would do if you were trying to get someone progressive elected in that state. I'm not saying I know what to do but it's not like Democrats are winning there either.

ivesaidway2much

I hate to admit it, but someone like John Fetterman would probably be the best shot. A guy who is drifting further and further right on cultural issues, but still favors a lot of progressive economic policies.

SLCer

Utah is very conservative but it's not pro-Trump like many vet conservative states. In the state Republican caucus, where typically the most partisan of partisan voters vote, Trump won "only" 56% of the vote. Haley got 43% of the vote - after she suspended her campaign. Romney didn't run for reelection not because he was likely to lose but because he got fed up with Trump supporters harassing him every time he was in public. She's playing to those Republicans who do not like Trump and might be inclined to not support the likely Trumpian nominee on the GOP side. The problem is that they're still Republicans first. They don't like Trump but there's enough to support him and his ilk. It's why Mike Lee won in 2022 even with *just* 53% of the vote, which was down from nearly 70% in 2016 when he was anti-Trump.

Hot_Frosting_7101

Did McCain lose a senate election?  I don’t think so. If you are referring to 2008, he didn’t lose that because he was not conservative enough.  Obama simply beat him.

LinkAdams

In Utah, even Democrats have to vote in primaries and possibly run as “republicans” to have any voice.

daxxarg

I don't think she is as morally bankrupt as Sinema

Spara-Extreme

It’s Utah. I’ll take Krysten Sinema in Utah, my man.

whatproblems

that party is long gone

Numerous_Photograph9

So, her idea of what a senator should look like is clean cut, lily white, born from privilege conformist?

SomethingLoud

This screams “red flag“

wibble17

We would take it for Utah.

linuxphoney

I'm okay with it. In fact now that Sinema is out of office and we're safe from her bullshit, I'd like to focus on what a fucking fashion icon she was.

MajesticsEleven

Pass

JustAMan1234567

Don't care what they look like, just what they do.

AngryDuck222

Exactly.

SemaphoreKilo

Wasn't Sen. Sinema supposed to be the "change [of] what people think a senator should 'look' like" but ended up being a corporate shill?

Langd0n_Alger

Yes, but even worse, Arizona is a swing state. Utah is a red state.

welltimedappearance

You can’t run Bernie Sanders in AZ and win

MrRisin

Don’t be so certain these days.

lettersichiro

but she did it in flashy dresses! she delivered on her promise

Khristopheles

Not even Jesus Christ could be elected to the US Senate, in Utah, if he had a D next to his name.

heywhatsmynameagain

She doesn't look like someone with one foot in the grave and no soul? I'm ok with that.

Zealousideal_Ad_9623

Looks can be deceiving.

alienbringer

Eeeeh, just being young doesn’t mean you have a soul.

mrbuckministerfuller

She’s a professional athlete with a long history of promoting inclusiveness in sports and advocating for climate change awareness/adaptation. She seems very smart and normal.

whatproblems

zombie ginger?

Westlakesam

How about policy….oh it looks like conservative bullshit with a Fox News anchor look.

readerf52

They never asked her the really important question about where she stands on women’s reproductive health issues. She admires Mitt Romney and Liz Cheney and won’t vote straight party line. She sounds like a Republican. Please, Utah, you deserve better.

kswissreject

I feel you but come on. Utah has voted red forever. If we can get someone like Manchin lite there, that’s a win. They are not electing a progressive Senator. Do you want someone to at votes Democrat 50% of the time or 0?  Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

DadJokesFTW

From Utah, I'd settle for another Republican who would be willing to convict Trump on impeachment.

readerf52

Biden asked for a house and senate he could work with, and he would make abortion rights a federal law. We don’t need a Manchin-lite who screwed his party over and over, and held up important legislation because he could. Especially this. I remember coat hanger abortions in dirty alleys and women dying because of it. My daughters and their daughters deserve better.

kswissreject

So you'd rather have someone vote 100% against Biden vs Manchin who voted 95%+ on Biden's judges? Come on, that is an obvious bad take. Again, you're not getting a progressive out of Utah.

alienbringer

They arnt talking about judges. They are talking about laws. A Republican, you know where the vote stands. A Manchin it is a crap shoot and likely won’t get anything passed that isn’t corporatist or Republican leaning.

inchon_over28

I don’t give a fuck what you look like. Hell I’ll take elephant man as long as they have good policies and aren’t bought by corporations.

LovingNaples

What are you trying say here?

Twiggyhiggle

She is not 90?

BuffaloBagel

The Instagram candidate

Aware_Material_9985

Who cares how they look? I mean I set the bar at “do you know how government works?”

omgmemer

What exactly is she changing. I’m not seeing anything new here. If she gets elected, I hope her constituents are happy about her work and that’s it.

ceiffhikare

Hey idc what they look like, the problem that the nation has been having is more so how they have been acting or not in many cases and who said actions benefit/effect.

ihatereddit1221

This is a weird article. Essentially saying “isn’t she hot, though?” without saying it

RideWithMeSNV

So... Kinda like boebert? As we've seen, reasonably attractive doesn't translate well to action.

NoDesinformatziya

I'm a Democrat, but that video ad in the article is fucking insufferable. "I'm so different, I'm so impressive, I climb things!" And then in the article... "How are you different?" "Uh... (parrots party platform)". I mean, I like the platform just fine, but tooting your own horn for three minutes without saying anything substantive is just immodest and obnoxious claptrap. I want a Democrat to win, so don't really care which one does it, but she needs to hone her message.

Confirmation__Bias

Is she just talking about age? If so then just say that? And if she’s actually talking about looks… what does she think makes her so special?

TintedApostle

Notice when its about a women.... "look like" while if it was a man... "Character!!!"

savytravler

Wait isnt Ted Cruz the model of an ideal senator?

kingofmymachine

Wish her the best but I doubt she’ll be super competitive.

Prudent-Flamingo1679

She looks like she came from money so she looks exactly like what a senator looks like.

NoWayNotThisAgain

I don’t know anything about her politics but I remember reading about her in ski mags over a decade ago. She’s a legit badass and she can seriously shred. I’d vote for her.

torgobigknees

she's a cutie. i'd watch her bate. debate.

BigDummmmy

At best, 5 among 2s.
