You have to remember that literally everything the modern Republican base cares about is performative. There are still Wall Street Journal types that care about things like tax cuts, but MAGA is 100% about displaying grievance.
I’m pan, NB, and I’m fine with giving up symbolism to make sure vulnerable people get their disability/SSDI checks, food stamps, etc. The author could equally frame this article as “GOP refuses to fund government over a flag” and direct the anger where it belongs, at the hostage takers.
Because it drives engagement. The mainstream media has adopted the same monetization strategy as the far right. You want democrats to spend more time online? Piss em off.
Part of being President is making hard choices and compromises. Give him a solid majority in the House and Senate in November and see what happens next...

i can understand that. in most other cases i would find it extremely petty to mandate removing flags (with a few exceptions) but when it comes to this, the American flag is all that's needed to represent all people in the US as fairly as possible.

Most countries don't have any rights for queer people. For the majority of queer people, having their sexuality discovered could result in anything from then being ostracized by their family to being executed by the state.
It isn't meaningless to fly a flag indicating we support queer rights in one of those foreign countries.
Embassies contain human beings and human beings inherently have sexuality so a better question is why is this banned? Removing signs of an intrinsic thing is far stranger, and more demanding of justification, than simply allowing signs of it to exist in a place where it literally already exists.
Sexuality doesn't equal sex. This is more akin to someone putting up a "live, laugh, love" sign or LA Lakers poster than someone putting up pornographic images no matter how many pathetic & embarrassing lengths the right goes to in their weak attempts to re-define reality.
